Conclude the section.

I just want to spend a couple of lessons on some changes and updates that we can do with our Power BI

desktop, just to help you with some of the formatting and some of the things that you can do.

So far I've spoken throughout the course to say that you can actually change the theme and you can change

the default colors that you're working with.

Now.

I've been using the sort of default colors because hopefully on the training course most people would

have access to those.

But let's have a look and see if you wanted to change your theme, how you'd go about that.

So we're back in the Power BI desktop and what we're going to do is we're going to go to our view and

you'll see there's an option called themes.

And what you'll see is this is very much like a sort of Microsoft Office type of option.

When you come into it, you pick a style and the style then gets applied according to that.

So you can see at the moment that you've got your current theme that's been used, the default theme.

However, if you go to your Power BI, you will see that there's different themes that you can use as

defaults and you can experiment with these.

You can try the different colors, see if there's any that actually you like and that you could use

in your report.

There's a few interesting options that you could use.

So basically I'm just clicking and you can just see just trying different options.

And as you can see, the reports getting updated with that theme option.

So you can experiment with the different colors and the different themes that are the defaults for the

power beer.

However, we do have other options that we can do as well.

And one of the things that we can do is we can go to something called a theme gallery.

So what's happened over time is that certain people have put together their own themes and then they've

been published on the theme gallery on Microsoft Power BI.

So we're going to visit that.

It's actually on the Internet.

So I'm going to click on Theme Gallery and we're going to see our browser open.

So you can see now that the browser is opened and we now looking at the theme gallery because it's part

of the Microsoft Power BI community.

So you can change this and you can look at the recently posted or the featured ones.

If you wanted to look at featured options and see the different featured options that are available,

the ones that receive the top kudos.

Also.

So go back to recently posted so you can go through this and you can have a look at different styles

and then decide which ones you quite like.

So say for example, you are kind of liking this executive report, say as an option.

So if we click on that.

It will then open this up and it will show you what it looks like in your power pie.

So it gives you an example of the different styles that can be used.

As you can see.

This is a different style that you've got.

And if you get down from this, you will then see that there is a theme JSON file.

Now the JSON file is the key file.

So if you downloaded this themed JSON file, basically select the download.

If we go back into our power BI, I'm going to bring up our Power BI desktop.

So I'm back in the Power BI desktop now and all you would do is then you would browse for the theme

and basic you would select that saved theme as a file and you would upload that JSON code.

And that's basically what the theme is doing, is saving the theme as a JSON code.

So at any time you can actually just produce your own JSON code, you could actually produce that and

actually bring that into PA, it would work.

So there's one option you can do is you can go out there, you can see other people's work, you can

download their JSON files and then upload them.

The other option that you've got though, is you can actually customize your current theme.

So I'm just going to go back to my default and let's go back to customize current theme.

So when you select this, it will now give you a ability to come into this and then to be able to change

your different theme options.

And the first part is you need to give this a name.

So let's say I'm going to call this my theme one and you get your names and colors.

So let's say I don't really like this blue color.

Maybe I want that to be a little bit lighter to begin with.

Let's say with color two, I actually want a greenish color.

Let's say I want a dark ish green.

And we go that color, say color three.

I want a more reddish color.

Maybe move that over to so orange, I get to use a red color there and you get the idea you go through

now with your different colors.

And when I click on the apply, you will see now that the color scheme has changed.

Now to use those colors so you can see the light blues.

They're the greens, they're the reds that I've just used.

So those colors would then be used.

There's quite a lot to this.

So if we go back to customize current theme, the first one in here is obviously you can change the

default colors that are used, but also then you could decide in your sentiment colors.

Also using diverging colors, you can set those as defaults.

Now, there are quite a lot of options here, so I'm just going to run through them quickly.

Just to get an idea in, you advanced as well.

You can see that.

What's your colors for your different elements in your visual like access grid lines, text fonts,

And in this case you'll see that you're not really using a true black.

So I would definitely suggest that going and trying to set this as a true black, there we go.

000 said that as a true black and said that as my first level.

And if you wanted to use second level elements as well, you could come and maybe make those just a

little bit darker if you wanted to.

So as you can see, they've got a bit of a gray scale here, but I definitely suggest on your first

level elements, you would want that to be a true black.

The same with your text.

Actually, your once we go into text here, you got your general text, you can see you can change your

font family, the font size in this case as well your font color.

I would drag this down and make it a true black in terms of being able to see that.

And you can see with your title as well.

And again, I would use a true black for that cards and KPIs which are default.

You might remember that I was using more like around the size 27 for this in terms of points and then

again our true black.

So I think you're getting the idea and we can set all of these options here in your visuals as well.

You can have different default background colors if you wanted.

What is your border you could ever set to default beyond?

Remember, I was kind of using more of a dark gray for my border so I could set that as my my border

there.

And also I used my 15 pixels as the radius in the headers as well, which your background colors, your

transparencies, your tooltips as well.

What's the default that you would want to use for this?

And then we have our pages as well.

If you're using a specific page background, like for instance, you may want to use like a little bit

of a gray background, for example, and maybe not have any transparency.

You're full to pain as well.

So the filter pane, we've already seen that our filters over here, how you would want that to be.

So as you can see, there's a number of different options that you can come through and customize here.

Aren't you happy with it?

You click apply and you can see now that it's now updated the report to to show that now, because my

board is on, do you see that it's actually now applied the border to my heading and maybe in certain

situations I might not want it to actually do certain things.

So just turn that back off again.

But you get the idea you would come through this and you may need to make some changes.

But you can see now that the background color for the page has changed.

And basically all that's happened now is that it's now saying in this report that the current theme

is the my theme one.

Now, if I wanted to use this for other reports, what I can do is to save the current theme, save

it as a file, and then go into other reports, upload that theme, and then apply it.

So it can be very powerful for for being able to do that.

So hopefully this has given you a bit of an idea around themes.

I've just shown you a bit of a basic overview here, but it's definitely something to experiment with

and if you're using your lot, you will find that this will save you a lot of time in terms of setting

a default that really works for you, and then you can just apply it to other reports.
