What happened is, he became obsessed with his work,

and it drove him mad.

And eventually, it killed him.

Let me tell you a story.

There once was a lonely painter,

shunned by his family and left without friends.

He dedicated his life to finding

the one thing he yearned for.

The thing that would let him express all of his pain,

all of his passion.

He searched and searched, but still he couldn't find it.

Until one day...

Welcome to the deleted scenes

from the Legend of the Muse.

We'll explore some of the moments

that didn't make it into the final cut of the film.

We had quite a few shots like this of Adam,

as he made his way around the arts district of Downtown LA,

searching for inspiration.

The idea was that Adam had talent,

but he didn't quite have the passion to create

the great work that he had the potential to create.

He needed to find the inspiration

that soon enough will be provided by the muse character,

the Leannan Si that he will encounter.

Originally, the film was going to start with an opening shot

of the two henchmen driving,

and these shoes hanging from the trees,

to sort of establish the space,

so that we would recognize it when Valerie and Adam

return to it in the final scene.

We really liked the visuals of it, but,

we couldn't get the flat tire scene to look like

an actual blowout, so we decided to cut from that to

just having our guys, Donnie and Gus, arguing.

And here we have another shot of Adam driving around.

You can see a couple of the producers

in the background of that shot, which is why I like it.

Just meant to show Adam's goal and how far he is from it.

So that, by the end of the film,

we see that he's literally gone from being an outsider

to an insider in the art community.

This is a shot of Adam in his apartment

before the muse has come into his life.

He's sort of uninspired and the idea was that there was

a call being made to him, she was calling for him,

because she's lost her last lover and she needs a new one,

and even inside his apartment, he could hear it,

as if she were in the room with him.

But he didn't quite know how to get to her yet.

So the path has yet to be laid out to him,

but he does have the sense that there's

something else out there, ready to inspire him,

if he just opens his heart to it.

I do love a lot of these scenes, especially these moments

where Phil as Lance was such a jerk to Adam.

I think

Phil is just hilariously

dirty and sleazy.

A lot of these scenes from the beginning of the movie

got cut because we wanted to get

our muse character onto the screen.

Elle was just so electric and captivating that

the movie really took off when she was there.

So we had to sort of streamline the first 20 minutes,

to get her involved and this was another

scene that we had to pair down a little bit.

This is Adam as he's just returned from

being out in the middle of nowhere with Hector,

and he saw the muse that he needed in his life,

but he had to leave her behind, so he essentially has

this fever dream in which he relives the experience and

goes back into the middle of the wilderness and finds her

and brings her back and when we watched this in

post-production, we realized that it actually made more

sense that he almost conjured her with his artwork,

rather than having to physically retrieve her.

So, we recut this and I think the end result in the film

is actually much more effective, but there are some cool

shots in here, so I thought we'd show them to you guys.

The next scene is from the end of the film, after

our Maria character has witnessed the death

of her ex-boyfriend, Jason.

We had a couple of these quiet moments with Maria,

which I love because Kate just knocked it out of the park

with her performance.

Again, it was an issue of sort of streamlining the ending.

We sort of feel like the momentum is leading us towards

the big showdown here, so we couldn't spend too much time

with her, but I love the looks that she gives.

I love that there's my college sweater

over there on her couch, which I thought was kinda cool.

And she's sort of recovering from trauma,

and she has this dirty laundry everywhere

'cause she hasn't gotten out of the house in weeks,

and so it sort of establishes what she's doing,

when the muse character later appears in her apartment,

which she's finally trying to clean up her place,

and getting her life back in order after the trauma

of her last relationship and the trauma of seeing him

disposed of so violently.

And she's worried about Adam.

And here we are, back in the final scene.

You can see the shoes that were not established,

because we cut the scene in the first act,

so we cut them in the final scene as well.

And one more moment here of sort of

Adam with Valerie, grieving.

This is in the film,

but the continuation of this scene was cut,

because we went straight out into the forest with him,

but I thought you guys might like to see

what the original scene actually involved which was

showing how sort of shocking it was to see this powerful

muse creature incapacitated by Adam potentially choosing

something else over her and how losing her lover can

truly end her life,

if he were to continue through with that choice.

And we have one more deleted scene.

This was a post-credits sequence,

that took place months after Adam disappeared

into the forest with his muse,

and as Valerie says,

through his life into his work until his life was no more.

So much like the emaciated man at the beginning who is

wasting away with a harmonica in his hand,

Adam is gone and his muse needs a new lover

in order to continue and lo and behold,

a writer hears the call and goes into the middle

of the forest and the cycle continues.
