At times like these, the
beginning of a school year,

it's appropriate to give
a speech of welcome. Oh,

My name is Philip Tenhouse,
and this is my wife Margaret.

And on behalf of both of us and the
staff, we wanna welcome you to Harrad.

I'm very happy to see that you've
all, most of you, at any rate,

have met your roommate, and I hope
that in the short time that you've had,

that you've found to be people
that you'd like to know better.

The question that is written on some of
your foreheads and is palpable in the

room right now is how were these
selections of roommates made? Well,

the answer for the time being, at
any rate, is going to have to be,

they were made very carefully,

and you're gonna have to trust
us in this matter. This year.

We're all of us gonna be embarked
on an adventure into the unknown?

In technical language,

it would be called a
controlled group experiment in

pre-marital relations,

but in real language, simple language.

It's that we're going to be
exploring ourselves through

others. Now, during this year,

you're going to be expected,
not really expected.

You're gonna be encouraged
to have sexual intimacy as a

necessary and good element
in the art of loving,

which we feel is not only
physical, but spiritual.

We're gonna be asking some
very difficult questions,

and hopefully we'll get some answers.
Questions like the words, adultery,

fidelity to one partner,
exclusivity in marriage.

Are these words operative
in today's society,

or are they inoperative?
Is love with a stranger,

satisfactory or unsatisfactory?

Can a free society remain
truly free without a constant

renewal of its values? Now,

we don't claim any originality
in this quest. I mean,

it's been going on for centuries.
Socrates said, by all means, get married.

You get a good wife, you become
happy. If you get a bad wife,

you become a philosopher. .

This year we hope to find that it's
possible to have both those elements,

the intellectual as well as
the physical. In one marriage.

You will, of course, during
the course of the year,

have the option of
changing your roommates,

but that's gonna be
limited to once a month,

and it's gonna be an inflexible
rule, no exceptions made,

because we feel very strongly that
one month is the minimum amount of

time necessary to get to know
another human being. Well,

that's about all I have to say,
except good luck to all of us.

The word for marriage means to
try in the English language.

The word for marriage is wedlock. Now,

civilized societies have taken on a
one-to-one relationship of wedlock as the

proper arrangement between man and
woman. Now, this may be proper,

but it's also inflexible. And as a result,

people in wedlock tend to depend upon
each other for all of their emotional

needs,

as if one person could satisfy all the
needs of another in or out of marriage.

But don't you think that's a possibility?

The two people can completely
fulfill each other? Well, Sheila,

that's society's ideal. And certainly
this relationship can exist.

But more often,

rather than sharing and
meeting the needs of another

marriage means two people sharing
only their loneliness together. Hmm.

Well, and in many cases, this
has worked control of families,

of children, of responsibility,
but it's also a legal contract.

What's wrong with the legal contract?
Well, the contract can imply ownership.

Ownership implies something
to be jealously regarded.

A jealousy under these rules is
sometimes regarded as being good.

It means you care.

And so a destructive emotion like
jealousy becomes a feeling worthy of

expression. Now, in reality,

we know that jealousy is
repression and frustration.

Unfortunately,

these feelings are sometimes idealized
by young people under the notion that

these are signs of romantic love,

assuming that marriage is
based on these strange ideas.

What is the proper approach? Alright,

should the approach be a string
of affairs, conventional marriage,

group marriage? I think before we decide,

we have to root out some
archaic attitudes. Uh.

attitudes. What do you mean by that?

Oh, hate, jealousy, possessiveness,

feelings of inadequacy.
Some forms of guilt,

destructive attitudes that we have
come to accept as being normal.

I think we all agree with that and
have gone beyond it to some extent.

We wouldn't be here, do

I think we're a pretty well liberated
group. Do you all agree with that? Sure.

That's great. That means we can
move a little faster in this thing.

We're gonna the using a device in
these classes from time to time,

called the improvisational technique.

we're gonna deal with one of the
facets of the word love. Well,

most powerful influences in all our
lives. Now, this one's gonna be simple.

It's kind of a tuneup. It's going
to be a pretend situation. And,

but I want you to function in that
situation as honestly as you can,

that's available to us.

Use that I think you've come to know
each other at least reasonably well. Now,

the pretend situation is that all
four of you're gonna go to a dance.

Now. When the dance gets started, I

Now, when I call an end to the
exercise, I want you to ignore me.

You understand that? I want you to go

The reason for that is you're going to
pretend that she's turned you on during

the course of the exercise,

and you are going to pretend
that he's done the same to you.

So when I call an end to it,
don't pay any attention to me.

Just use terms of endearment to each
other. You'll hold each other close,

but ignore me. Okay? Right.

This is after you say, stop.
