IN THE FIRST DAYS OF THE 1989 ROMANIAN REVOLUTION,
THE ATTEMPTS TO STOP THE PROTESTS BY ARMY, POLICE AND SECRET POLICE GET OUT OF HAND.
IN THAT CHAOS, UNDER THE THREAT OF AN INVISIBLE ENEMY,
EVERYONE MIGHT BE LABELED AS TERRORIST.
BASED ON REAL EVENTS
- You forgot these. - To hell with them.
Take care.
- Don't play the hero. - Yeah, yeah.
Officers and soldiers, think of your mothers!
What's up, Nelu?
Trying to calm the crowd, but the megaphone's broken.
Hurry up!
Take this!
"No violence!" So they fucking get it.
- Sir. - Cheers.
- Take it up to the conference room. - Yes, sir.
- Where's the chief? - With the Army unit.
Trying to move us all there, but in this mess...
They poured fuel on the car and lit it up.
They burned things all night.
My wife would faint if she knew.
She told me to leave the car at home.
What's Silivaș doing at the Army unit?
Whatever.
Endless trouble.
Damn bastards.
We are securing the premises, Comrade General.
Comrades Silivaș, Petrache, and Rotescu
from the Police and Secret Service.
To both of the warehouses.
Motherfuckers.
- It makes no sense. - What, Aurică?
We can't use weapons. What do I make of this?
On the 17th, they said we're at risk of civil war. And now?
It's the same.
"Use only your bayonets and boots, no firearms."
Against those punks!
How did the two in the square die?
Someone shot from some attic.
- Who? - Foreign agents, like Ceaușescu said.
They want us to handle the hot potato for them.
Right. What do we do today?
They'll attack again.
A spot of brandy, anyone?
Yes.
Someone has to stay here!
If we all leave, they'll swarm in like ants.
Let them see there are no prisoners.
They won't find anyone detained here.
- They're all in prison. - They're all in prison.
Except for the Gypsy and two others.
Hello.
The bastards can come see for themselves.
No way!
Are you coming back here?
Alright.
Okay.
- It was Silivaș. - And?
He's a fucker.
He and the other bosses are in the Army building,
safe and comfy,
while we deal with those buggers.
Freedom!
Send someone down to let them in,
so they see we have no prisoners here.
Ceaușescu, don't be a cur Learn a thing from Honecker!
One unit on the corner of Ștefan cel Mare, one at the clinic.
And two tanks.
- Commander, let's not be... - Look at the Police headquarters!
Who will pay for the damages? The people!
Aren't the people in power?
Let them foot the bill.
Yes!
I thought we could bring all Police and Secret Service people here.
Our building is a deathtrap.
They won't dare attack us here, there's strength in numbers.
Think we'll spend Christmas together?
- I don't know. - There's a lot of misinformation.
These guys are asking for it, Nicu.
They'll be locked up by Christmas.
They want freedom, but wouldn't know what to do with it.
They'll quiet down before long.
Do you know something we don't?
Hello!
Officers and soldiers, think of your mothers!
The Army is on our side!
Dear comrades!
Stop calling us comrades!
Dear citizens of Sibiu!
Keep it down, please! So we can talk!
You are free to protest, but do it quietly!
The Army...
The Army supports the people!
The Army is with us!
The Army will not shoot at citizens, I spoke with General Milea!
You can go see! No prisoners in the Police building!
You are free to protest peacefully!
Don't vandalize military buildings, the Army protects the people!
- Who shot yesterday? - Who shot?
The Army has never shot at civilians!
Those shots in the square, it was the Army shooting!
Down with the Secret Police!
Appoint a delegation!
We will let three people in!
Quiet!
Stop pushing from the back!
They're letting us in to look for our families!
Ask about Dogaru Ion! He's my son!
- Let us in! - You've killed our children!
Freedom!
No answer.
Gicu, this is bad news.
...against Romania's sovereignty,
and, upon being found out, committed suicide.
All the rumours and lies have been orchestrated,
in collaboration with traitors and imperialists,
by the traitor Milea.
Bullshit!
Guys, it's time to retreat. They'll crush us.
Boss says we should come over to him to the Army building.
We can't, we didn't get the okay.
- We have to protect Police headquarters. - And if they shoot?
- Do we shoot back? - Orders are clear.
- We defend headquarters. - So we shoot them?
Where the hell is that gunfire coming from?
- Someone panicked. Can't be our guys. - The Secret Police?
Civilians broke into the armory!
- What? - They broke into the armory!
Stop shooting!
Mara, listen to me.
Tell Flavia I'm fine.
There's gunfire here. Tell her not to worry.
Don't go outside.
Can you hear me?
Who's shooting?
Nicu!
Get down!
The Army is shooting at us! Take cover!
Move it!
The Army is shooting at us!
Comrade Major!
Who the fuck is it?
- Doctor! In here! - Where does it hut?
How the hell do we get out of here?
Protesters took guns and ammo and they're angry as hell.
This is civil war. They'll kill us all.
Everyone to the passport department!
Someone's shooting from above!
- Now what? - They're breaking in!
If civilians get in, we're dead.
- Get rid of the uniforms. - Hurry!
Put this on, you poor sod. You'll get shot like cattle.
Leave your weapons, we're going to the switchboard room.
I forgot mine upstairs!
Leave it on the shelf.
Puia, call 167.
- Tell them to stop! - You think I'm crazy?
No one from Police fired any shots!
Send your soldiers to get us out, they'll kill us for nothing!
Pass him to me.
Aurică, it's me, Luci.
I swear, we're all in the switchboard room.
They're unarmed!
Send a tank, no one's shooting!
We can't get out without you.
What?
He keeps saying someone is shooting from this building.
- Fuck! I'll try. - Romică.
Go up to third floor, check for shooters.
Comrade President ran with a helicopter.
It's a Revolution!
Dincă, do you copy?
It's over.
- Don't shoot, brothers! - They kill us!
Don't shoot! They'll kill us!
What the hell are our higher-ups doing?
The protesters are on a rampage, bashing heads in!
Let's get out of here.
I'm off!
Let's get to Dragoman, he'll take us in.
How? It's murder down there!
The door by the stairs!
Cover us with warning shots!
Cizek, stop! They'll kill us!
Only warning shots in the air!
Fucking Commies!
Voicu!
There he is!
Here's another one!
Don't shoot!
Are you hurt?
Stop shooting!
Move!
Get in the car.
- Where are you going? - Party Headquarters.
- May I come? - Hop in.
- Can we come? - Get in.
- Are you alright? - I'm bleeding.
Shouldn't you go to a hospital?
Do I drop you there?
- Alright. - And you?
- Why are you out with a child? - I'm looking for my husband.
- Is he in the Revolution? - Yes, with all the others.
Those Secret Police scum have been shooting.
You'd better wait for him at home.
If something's happened, you can't bring him back.
Better look after the little one.
Burn that shit, try harder!
Even the fire won't eat him.
In the name of the people, surrender to the Army.
- Are you insane? - In the name of the people!
Cuff him, search him!
- Come film this. Let him film! - Who are you?
He's French.
Look here! Kent smokes! Whiskey, too!
Brandy!
- Look here! - This bag is full of soap bars!
Wow, Havana Club!
Kent!
- Coffee! - Assos!
Scented tissues!
Fancy shitheads!
Aramis cologne!
Bribes, all of it. Nylon pantyhose, instant coffee...
They've starved the people! Kept us piss poor!
My child was starving while they were stuffing their faces!
- Guard these. - Iuliana is on it.
No one will touch it!
If our brothers need anything, hand it out, but keep track.
- Yes. - Okay, I will.
I told you, that's what I did!
Understood.
Comr...
Yes, Comrade General!
I don't know how it happened.
Bring some bandages!
Yes, sir.
Yes, sir!
Fucking shit.
They tell me to surrender to the Secret Police.
All are crazy.
We have just heard from Sibiu.
- There is still gunfire... - Like hell there is!
We call on these murderers to stop the bloodshed!
Enough Romanian blood has been spilled!
For the last time,
military commanders, wake up!
This is our last call! A worker has the word.
Civilians stay here, under my command!
- Military troops, report to superiors! - Lock the doors!
Don't do anything stupid!
You and that priest terrorized the town!
Who put you in charge?
You'd drown the town in blood!
- What did I do? - Shut up!
You're all insane and incompetent!
Incompetent!
You sent them to loot safe boxes!
- What safe boxes? - On the ground!
Give me the pistol!
- Give me Hortopan at 149! - Okay!
Were you a Secret Police agent?
You just have to say it.
Don't rough her up.
What do we do with him, Doctor? He's losing blood.
Mari, come help me!
Comrade General,
we are under strong fire from the Police and Secret Service.
They're shooting at the comm training building and the helis.
Mari, help me!
We are defending ourselves.
Take them in.
How can I take them in? We're under fire!
Stănculescu said to stop.
Our boys were attacked.
Who?
Take them in.
That's tomorrow. Today I lead the fight!
Go fuck yourself.
You're Romanian, aren't you?
What do you think you're doing?
You pigs, you dare shoot at the Army?
- It wasn't us, Commander. - I know your lot!
Reporting! Firing continues.
Do we go root the terrorists out of the building?
- Go already! - Yes, sir.
Will you wait until they're here?
All the weapons down! Here!
Down!
No anarchy! Keep order!
The Army reports there are terrorists in tunnels.
Sons of bitches. How do we find the tunnels?
The Tourism Office has maps of the whole town.
Go get them, we'll catch those Secret Police!
- Let me go! - Shut up!
Get me specialists! Doctors, teachers!
- And him? - We caught him.
- Suddenly you call the shots? Who are you? - It's a mistake. Doina Cornea sent me.
Popping up like rats.
- Who has a car? - Me!
- What's your name? - Leahu.
Take them to Comrade Dragoman at the barracks.
- Give us some written proof. - Get moving!
- What about him? - The bastard!
He managed Ceaușescu's son's villa with all the luxury food and drinks!
Getting fat while we starved!
People, I was just a caretaker, guarding the house, keeping it warm.
- I took nothing, Comrade. - I'm not your comrade!
- I'm no comrade of thieves! - Thief!
Take him away!
Colonel Radu, come here!
Weapons down, everyone!
Stop shoving, son.
Where do we take them?
- The car is around the corner. - Don't shoot us, brothers!
We only wanted to help!
I'm Doina Cornea's nephew, I served in the Paratroopers!
- I'm begging you... - Get down!
Don't shoot! Please!
Not a boss anymore, are you?
- Get up! - I'm innocent!
- Be a man! - Wait, son.
- What will they do? - Shoot us from behind.
You'd deserve it, fuckers.
- We won't kill them, right? - Shut up!
Get to the square!
- Let's go! - Move it!
- They were hiding around the corner. - Get them in!
The policeman in the coat isn't dead!
I'm Colonel Popa, head of local police!
- Don't shoot, we came to surrender! - Check him.
We came to surrender!
Shoot me, but spare them!
Go to the officers and surrender!
Anyone still alive, get up!
Anyone armed?
Hands up!
Please don't let me die.
Shut up, they'll shoot us.
Strip!
Why did you jump over the fence?
We got orders to retreat here.
Orders, huh?
Forward, crawl!
Brothers!
Stop shooting!
Please, don't shoot me.
Stay down!
- I didn't hurt anyone. - Hands up!
I'm unarmed, I didn't shoot. Please!
He's from Traffic Police. I'll take him to the checkpoint.
Do it.
Anyone still moving?
This terrorist is playing dead.
- Don't shoot, soldier. - Shut it!
- Take the injured to the infirmary. - Move it!
Faster!
Make the Secret Police stop shooting at the military.
I spoke on the phone with my people over there.
People in military uniforms are shooting at real military.
Listen!
They've poisoned the water.
- Poisoned my ass! - Children, seniors,
people of Sibiu, don't drink the water.
Find wells or boil it, I'm no expert.
But beware, there is still bloodshed there.
We here are freed from this murderer...
I am attacked from all sides!
Defend yourself!
Defend? One guy threatens me, another tells me to surrender!
Defend yourself. I take responsibility. Stop shooting the civilians.
Yes.
Understood.
I'll do that.
Stop listening all the fools!
Sir.
The dictator's son has been apprehended.
We hope that this good news will be confirmed.
Now, will speak...
Aren't you glad I'm not dead, Doctor?
I'm dancing with joy.
Well, Doc,
I think this is it.
The end of Communism.
If only.
It looks more like the end of the world.
When it will end?
I've been bandaging like in war time.
This is a war.
I called the Secret Police boss, he was all wishy-washy.
I say, "Comrade, are we friends or not?"
"What did we agree on earlier in my office?"
"Order your men to stop shooting."
He says "It's not my men shooting" and hangs up.
Listen.
Was it really our guys who burned the Secret Police building?
No idea who it was.
Still, good job.
Fucking bastards.
They've killed Mițiți, one of my best students.
He was so young, poor sod!
Clueless.
Didn't know the right end of a gun.
To prepare for the free elections.
Yes.
Careful, don't trust them.
I have information about police agents dressed as priests.
Check everyone, detain suspects!
Sit there.
Let the bastards stay there!
Until I say they can leave!
He's a forensic. Fractured skull.
Don't hit us! Please!
Don't hit us! Stop!
Stop!
Don't hit us! Please!
Please, boys!
- Where are the microphones? - What?
Shut up!
Move it!
Look alive!
Hurry!
We're confiscating everything!
That's it!
Don't move, you stinking old terrorist!
- Hurry the fuck up! - Move!
Are you asleep?
It's payback time!
- You wanted to occupy us? - You killed our mates!
Hands behind your head!
Elbows up!
- I said up! - Up!
Your feet stink. Spent too long in those attics?
Down!
- Move it! - Down!
What are you doing here?
- I need to use the toilet. - Fuck off!
Elbows up!
Continue.
Too many survivors.
So, comrades?
How do you like it now?
Who's Rusu?
Rusu, get up!
It's me.
- Hurry up. - Make a list. Full name, place of birth.
Tell them to give our clothes back. I have a lung disease.
- You can't do this. - Good, you'll die faster.
If anyone gets out, tell our families.
Comrade Major, what the hell? Are we prisoners?
- What did we do? - Acting fucking innocent?
You're arrested as counter-revolutionaries.
You've killed innocents.
Find a single bullet casing we shot and I'll eat it!
- I'll put you in your place. You two! - Comrade Major!
People, call a doctor! Soldier!
- I need a bandage! - Shut up!
You'll all end up like this pig!
Get the fuck back!
- That's one of my men. - Get back!
Kid, do you hear me?
Stay there, bastard!
Hands up!
If you don't let us use the loo, you won't like it in here.
- Water! - Really, you want water?
After your lot poisoned it?
Who sabotaged the dam?
- Shut it or we shoot you all! - Water!
Stay alert!
- On the floor! - Move!
Hurry up!
Doctor!
Thank you, Doc. God bless you.
It will be alright.
Got a smoke?
- I'll send some clothes. - Thank you.
Doctor, tell Dragoman his neighbor is here.
Name's Nicorici!
Get me something for my lungs, they stripped me naked.
If Ceaușescu's gone, why the hell is there gunfire?
We'll see tomorrow if he's really gone.
That fucker Army boss changed sides in a blink.
- What did they want from you? - They mistook me for someone.
They say terrorists will attack this place to release us.
Let's hope so.
The scumbags move through the sewers.
They trained with the Arabs.
One of them can off a whole squad.
- What Arabs? - Shut up!
We're done for.
We're under attack! Follow me!
Face down!
- Status? - We have no more capacity for prisoners.
How about a hotel?
What do I know?
We're awaiting orders.
Fucking pieces of shit!
How do you think this will end?
It's up to fate.
Aurică.
Should we have someone weld the manholes shut?
Just in case.
- Evacuate the prisoners! - Move it!
Stand up!
Faster!
Milan!
What is this circus?
I'm sorry, Nicu, we're on different sides now.
- Move it! - Faster!
Attention!
Stop shooting at the helicopters! I called them here!
Move!
To the right!
Move!
Keep moving!
Move it!
- Go! - Move it!
- Don't sit down! - Move, scum!
Faster!
Get in line!
- Everyone, line up! - Faster!
Fucking fat-asses!
- Move! - Get down already!
Hurry it!
Assume guard formation!
Don't sit on the carpet! Up!
No one will find you here.
Get the hell down, you fat pig!
Move it!
Look alive!
Get a doctor!
- Hurry up! - You too, old bastard!
Soldier, help!
- Move! - Come here!
What are you looking at? Move it!
Move it!
- Get down there! - Move it, asshole!
I thought you were dead.
Let's find our guys.
Now you don't recognize me?
Move it!
Move it!
I can't take it anymore! Please!
You're not looking good.
Shouldn't you go to the infirmary?
He asked them yesterday. Not happening.
- Why did you come back? - To defend the Police unit.
- Can you believe him? - Sir, I need to get back to my family.
- You think we want to stay here? - My son gets christened on the 7th.
Attention!
Attention!
Get up!
What is this, a hotel?
Get up or I'll come down there!
Attention!
At ease.
You are here
because you are terrorists and murderers!
You've killed innocent people!
You've shot at the people and the people's Army!
Pupil Mițiți died in my arms,
from a bullet fired from your headquarters!
- It wasn't us shooting! - Silence!
You poisoned the water!
- Shut up! - It's not true!
You sent your packs of bandits to attack us!
You besieged us!
Still, the people have won,
and the military is always with the people.
Comrade Colonel! Aurică!
It's not just your men who died. You shot some of ours!
We can't shoot at each other! We agreed...
- Shut up! - You can't abuse officers like this!
Keep your mouth shut!
Now you're telling me what to do?
You are traitors and you will be tried for high treason!
No one gets out of here until you confess to shooting at the people!
What?
Forget about seeing your families!
I'll be damned if any of you gets out of here alive!
This is the will of the people!
I was appointed by the new Government
to destroy all the terrorist nests in Sibiu!
- And I'll do it. - Guards, by the ladders!
Form two rows! Right flank, face the pool!
Fall in!
Soldiers!
For how you've done your duty so far,
for defending your country, I command you!
We serve the country!
As you were.
If any of these scumbags move,
shoot without warning!
- Kill them on the spot! - Shut up!
Sentinels on guard!
Come on, move it!
Just this, for so many of us?
Give me some too!
Me too!
Get us some blankets!
There, stuff yourselves!
Soldier!
- Give us some! - Bring more bread!
- I'm drinking, I don't care. - Viorel!
Fuck them, we'll die anyway.
- Don't, it's poisoned! - Says who?
You heard that guy!
Drink, it's good.
Let me check you.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
Turn around.
That's enough.
Get them some water.
You're burning up.
Not much to do.
Put this on, it's cold here.
All I have is Ampicillin.
Get him some water!
Take one.
Look, poor bastard!
Son.
Soldier. I'm sick.
I have a fever.
My mate is coughing blood.
Please, bring a doctor.
My bandage needs to come off.
I'll take it off. And your hand with it.
Get lost!
Line up!
You're going to the loo.
Hurry up!
- Two by two, you hear me? - We're hungry.
Keep it down, tonight we get rid of you all.
Call Dragoman here!
I want out! You put me here for no reason!
- Shut up! - We'll turn on the water to clean you out.
Two by two!
Look, it's Chief!
You can't recognize me in my fresh new looks?
Got anything on you? Hands up!
This piece of shit smokes the good stuff!
Piss off! You won't be needing this.
Fucker.
Good to see you alive, Chief.
Who's shooting now?
Want to bet it's still us?
Let me look at you.
Why are they still shooting?
They say terrorists will come for us.
Stănese!
Get up!
Why swim against the stream, Viorel?
Our Colonel Aurică bet on the right horse.
Stop talking, it's done now.
Strugaru from the barracks here.
Where's that ambulance?
His fever is still high.
Paracetamol won't help, he has an infection.
- What did you use to take? - Rifampin.
Yes, Rifampin.
- Can I have water? - I'll distill some.
Can't trust tap water.
They should be here!
Can your wife bring you the pills?
Do I call her?
They took my pills, said I wanted to poison the water.
Like hell you did.
Tell his wife to bring some.
- The light is out! - Fucking hell.
This time it's not Ceaușescu.
- Maybe it's the terrorists. - Are you daft?
Go look for that ambulance, they're dying here.
VICTORY
Is it true, what the Army says?
Did you shoot?
Mari, have you lost it?
No one shot.
- Colonel Dragoman opened fire on us. - He said you fired first.
That you shot at the national flag.
Do you believe him or me?
- Hurry up! - Hold this!
I need some bandages!
Not that one. He's a terrorist!
Please, make some room!
- It hurts! - Bring the bandages!
Wait here for the nurse.
Move it!
Try to sneak out once you get treated.
They won't notice in this chaos.
Gina, he's the guy.
You're treating terrorists and letting us die?
- Mind your business, let us do our job! - You have no shame!
It's your job to coddle Secret Police bastards?
- Is he family? - Leave the lady alone.
- Our job is to treat people. - People? They're murderers!
The only free beds are in Ob-Gyn. I don't want trouble.
Thanks.
Isn't he one of yours? Oprea from Stakeouts?
Yes, he's been like that since they brought him in.
They didn't even looked at him.
They really worked him over.
Why, though?
They found him hiding in the infirmary.
Beat him to a pulp.
Tie them up and send them back!
I went to talk to Dragoman and they started shooting, just like that!
That's Capt. Toboșaru.
Acts like he rules the hospital.
A lunatic.
Cizek, why did they tie you up?
So I don't escape.
Guess they had their suspicions.
I get you treated and you signal the shooters overnight from the window?
Who are you, piece of shit?
Who did it?
Put that pistol down! What is this madness?
Everyone, out!
This is a hospital, not a battlefield!
You can kill them once I cure them!
In here, I call the shots!
Wrong, I call the shots.
Order no. 1 of today, 25th of December,
makes me military commander during this state of emergency!
You treat murderous terrorists!
I made an oath. I treat people, not terrorists.
From now on, I decide who gets treated, discharged or arrested!
Who flashed a torch out the window last night?
- Was it you? - No, Comrade Captain!
Was it you?
- I'll kill you. - I'm with the Revolution!
I got shot on the 21st fighting outside the Police headquarters.
No one was at the window!
Maybe it was next door.
In ten minutes, I want free beds for my men.
I'll discharge them by noon.
But don't kill them in here!
- Are you alright? - Yes, Doctor.
I'm out of gauze and bandages.
I have no Rifampin for you.
Tell your family to get some or it's in God's hands.
Back again?
- Any new ones? - No.
Come on.
Let's go.
- Victory! - Freedom!
Man, the Revolution is awesome!
Will you teach me to shoot?
- You didn't do your military service? - No, I went to night school.
So will you?
Forget it, pipsqueak.
Why not, Moldovan?
The kids are braver than us.
They were the first out in the streets.
If he wasn't with us, he'd be in the morgue.
Long live free Romania!
Freedom!
We are free!
Enough!
- You're born in the wrong times! - I said stop it!
Careful!
Don't shoot us out of joy.
Where do we get some schnapps? We're freezing.
I have some brandy from my dad. I live close by.
Let's go!
Enough playing.
What are you doing here?
Hands up!
- Hands up! - We're on your side.
- And the guns? - From the armory.
I saw terrorists shooting out of this car!
Stop!
- Damn terrorists! - We're with the Revolution too!
What are you carrying?
What's this?
A lighter pistol!
Show me your ID!
Here.
What's this?
It's not mine! I don't have a driving license!
I saw people shooting out of this car!
Not true!
Piece of shit, what's with the marks by military objectives?
You wanted to blow them up?
I'll kill you!
It's my map, I'm a taxi driver!
A taxi driver, huh?
Murderers!
Speak, fucking scum! Who pays you?
Where are we going, guys?
Stop!
What the hell?
Stop or I shoot!
Fucking hell.
My boy!
You killed my boy! Murderers!
Why didn't you stop?
My boy!
Murderers!
Stay out!
I'm looking for Police Officer Munteanu in the Public Order division!
- Please, let me in! - You can't!
I'm turning myself in as an Internal Affairs employee.
Take her to Costea.
- Come with me. - Please!
So you've just turned yourself in?
Yes. Handing in my weapon.
The girl?
I couldn't leave her, my husband is probably here too.
You brought her to rake in some pity.
You'd better not be up to anything.
I'm not.
I know your kind.
We worked together.
You tell me, how could this be?
Our brothers, attacking and killing us!
- Killed anyone with this gun? - No.
And I'm done talking.
Are you?
You know what?
Draw me that tunnel from your headquarters to Conti hotel.
Don't act innocent!
The one where you keep prisoners.
- I'll crack your head open. - Behave, child.
The nerve on you!
Get the girl out. You stay!
Go to Lili's, dear.
Gicu, take her to the "lab."
Get her inside, she's a terrorist.
Get a look at her!
- Who are you? - Speak!
She was arrested at 1606.
They say she carried ammo for terrorists.
Where do you work?
Speak!
At the clinic.
- Are you married? - Who would marry her?
Shame on you, soldier!
Get them out of here!
Both of them!
Since they're suddenly such good friends.
You know each other, don't you?
They arrested me as I was waiting to cash in a cheque.
Why?
I was taking out my wallet
when someone yelled "She's a terrorist!"
- Us, terrorists! - Child killers!
- Unbelievable. - They gave you no explanation?
None. Maybe because I had my badge with me.
They made me untie my bun, said it could hide a transmitter.
Nothing surprises me anymore.
What's with their lot?
They brought them yesterday.
All the homeless wretches in town, here to keep us company.
- When did they bring you in, Emilia? - The 25th.
It was terrible.
Anything on your husband?
I asked the major's wife.
They say he's in the pool across the street.
- And your husband? - I haven't heard a thing.
- Maybe he's there too. - Who knows?
Before he left home a week ago he said,
"Take care of yourself and our daughter."
He must be having an affair.
Are you alright, girl?
Want a smoke?
Get yourself together.
It will be alright.
- Put in some meat, don't be stingy. - Sod off. Next!
No need to be like that.
Enjoy.
Got your meat?
Happy now?
Why did you beat me up, huh?
Why?
Let him go!
You beat up innocent people!
Break it off! What happened?
That Police pig arrested us in the square. He said he'd shoot us!
He bashed our heads against the wall!
He said he'd feed us human meat sausage!
Stop it! Enough!
Stop it!
The law was different before December 22nd.
Did you expect a pat on the back for protesting in the streets?
What was that?
Don't push us! We need to go to the toilet!
I got my monthlies!
- We need to go to the loo. - Fine, you're driving me crazy.
It's no use arguing with them.
- Out! - If you lot are terrorists, I'm a nun!
No more shooting!
- Push that kerchief aside. - What?
Push that kerchief aside.
Raise his head.
- What's your business? - Going to the loo.
There's no loo here.
- What's wrong? - This guy was trying to escape.
This won't do, Mr. Stănese. I thought you were sick.
I am.
- My wife is all alone. - Not my business.
- Did they execute them? - Yes, finished.
You know I'm no terrorist. I've been in the Police all my life.
Catching thieves, cleaning up,
like you clean up after patients.
I've never killed a soul, not even on missions.
- Sure, I beat people. - Keep me out of this.
It couldn't be helped, someone had to do it.
- I didn't beat anti-Communists. - What do you want?
Let me go.
Love, I don't care either way.
But you won't make it past the first floor, you've seen them.
I see.
At least call my wife, tell her I'm alright.
What's the number?
HAPPY HOLIDAYS! ROMANIA IS FREE!
Get dressed! You have five minutes.
Up!
Hands behind your back!
Tie him to that. Down!
If the terrorists shoot, you're our meat shield!
Ready?
Hold him!
Go!
Move it!
- Faster! - Hurry up!
- Look at us. - It's like we're in the schoolyard.
Judicial Police.
Economic Crimes.
Special Enforcement.
And the Secret Police, on the sides as usual.
Eat!
Boy, don't be stubborn or you'll starve.
You're impossible. You'll faint!
I won't.
Didn't they teach you in school? You don't eat, you faint.
You pigheaded brat!
I don't want you to die too!
Mister, I'm no terrorist.
I want to go home!
- I'll go on strike. - What?
I'm on strike! I want to go home!
Like you know what a strike means.
Fucking bastard.
No sitting on the carpets!
What's wrong with that?
- Only three pots? - We queued for three hours.
Huge line at the loo, I almost shat myself.
The food gets cold.
- Let's go on strike. - Nonsense.
Look at those idiots.
They're no idiots, Doru. They keep us here for a reason.
- We're the idiots. - They want to make us into terrorists.
I know their methods.
Maybe they're terrorists too. Shots were fired.
It wasn't us, it wasn't them. But somebody did it.
- Sutăreanu said they might let us go. - What's the hurry?
- My son gets baptized on January 7th. - Dream on, Viorel!
- We just did our duty. - They say you're terrorists, Chief.
If I'm a terrorist, you're king of all Gypsies.
Know your place, brownie!
- Leave him alone. - Why?
- What are you staring at? - I'm not staring, Chief.
Nicu, did you know anything?
Dragoman insisted we run to his Army building, "to safety."
Some safety!
We thought you deserted us.
Why do you think colonel Rotescu isn't here?
- Where is he? - You tell me.
Maybe they detained him.
I bet he's at home, preparing for the New Year's party.
When I heard shots, I knew it wasn't us.
I had a bad feeling.
The late Comrade Voicu warned us we'd be scapegoats.
He was right.
Look, it's Șoni!
- They got him too! - Move, boy!
Who's that?
He could've poisoned the water.
Viorel, when was the first gunshot?
I heard the first at 11:30,
right after we put up the sign with "We Support the Revolution."
We heard that too. Did you get a location?
- I think the cadre buildings. - No, it was your place!
- Where from? - The Police building, second floor.
- It's not true! - It is!
That wasn't the same shots.
Those ones came later.
Yes, around 12. I asked Giura if shots came from the detention centre.
Who are you anyway, Comrade?
I'm just a guy who saw the first shot came from the Police building.
And that's not all I saw.
I saw the Secret Police shooting too.
Yes, wasn't it him?
I wasn't in the same building. You're contradicting yourself.
You're all the same!
We have our doubts too.
- What do you mean? - I don't get this.
That fucking Rotescu, who left us to die,
said on the 21st we should fire to defend headquarters.
We agreed: warning shots first, then aim for the legs.
- You were planning how to shoot us? - And they did, on the 21st!
Of course!
No one shot at you!
It was just a plan in case of attack.
- I think so. - Doru, what is this?
This isn't the place to discuss this.
Anyone have a marker? Some chalk?
Ask around.
We need something to write with.
- What are you trying to say? - That fires weren't shot from our place.
And even if they were, Comrade, it doesn't mean it was my men.
Everyone and their dog was there. It could have been you!
Now they're saying I shot them!
Here, chalk.
- Let the Comrade draw his attack plan. - Give it here.
One house here, one here, workshops...
This is us,
this is them.
Right.
- What do they call you? - Leahu.
- When did you get to the intersection? - Around 9:30, maybe 10:00.
- To do what? - Am I under interrogation?
- No, Comrade. - Stop saying "Comrade."
Force of habit.
I reported to the Minister we had the premises under control.
Then Rotescu blew a fuse.
And you told Colonel Niță to only use warning shots.
- Of course. - So why weren't they shooting in the air?
- Who said it was my people? - That's not my point.
I gave that order.
If we had orders to shoot in the air, how did people get shot dead?
People are dead!
Innocent people were killed!
You bastards!
You're covering for each other!
- We're in this together. - No, we're not!
You're the haves, we're the have-nots!
We had to queue for a piece of meat!
You were smoking Kents!
That's enough! Stop!
Viorel, where did you hear the shots from?
- Here. - Can't be, that was us.
- Any shots must have come from the clinic. - You're wrong.
Direction-wise. I saw a guy on the building.
Yes, wearing a black coat.
Let's see who was wearing black.
The workers in Technical have black coats.
- Those are blue. - Some have black overalls.
Bollocks. The only black coats are at the Army's Tanks unit.
I did my military service there.
Look, he's one of yours. What the fuck is he wearing?
Where did you get the coat?
From Technical, when I surrendered.
- And isn't he a terrorist? - Nonsense!
You really think Judiciary or Economic Crimes
took rifles to the roof?
Did you actually see someone there?
I'll put it another way: Viorel, did you shoot?
So what the fuck is this about? Everyone's passing the buck.
Now we're the terrorists?
About two weeks ago,
I saw cars on the road to the airport with Russian license plates.
They were asking for directions to Săliște.
Yes, Russian terrorists!
Sure, Russian spies driving around with their own license plates.
I met some Russians with a flat tire. I got them to the Aciliu cabin.
They all spoke Romanian.
On the 22nd, when civilians tried to enter the Police building,
I saw Vanya, their driver, agitating the crowd.
Tourists?
I've seen Russian cars in town. Outside the hotel, too.
There, it's clear!
- It's clear you poisoned the water! - Us?
- Then who did? - Goldilocks!
Have you all lost your minds?
I'm not a terrorist!
Let me go!
Anybody know him?
Murderers!
- Calm down! - They called me a terrorist!
- Calm down or they'll kill us. - Why am I a terrorist?
- They killed my child! - Calm down!
- Please, calm down. - Murderers!
Murderers!
What's up, Chief?
Let's have a word.
- What? - Now listen.
No point in denying. You know I saw you on the street.
- I don't know what you mean. - I won't take your nonsense.
I'll shut up if you put in a word for that boy, Șoaită.
- The strike kid? - Yes.
- How can I help him? - Lots.
Have your Police comrades release him one of these days.
But don't forget. Or I start talking.
But how...
Cover the windows.
Use blankets and mattresses!
- Up! - Come on!
Everyone down!
They're shooting at us, damn dogs.
Shut it!
Attention!
Everyone on your feet!
What's wrong with you?
Please, that way.
I have...
succeeded in annihilating the counter-revolutionary terrorists.
The situation is under control.
As you can see, their conditions are more than humane.
In Sibiu, the fighting continues.
We have captured over 500 terrorists, but there are more.
- I will capture them. - You're the criminal!
We want freedom!
Freedom!
They've filmed enough. Get them out!
- Get them out! - Murderers!
I saw you myself, you shot civilians!
- Murderer! - Get them out!
Murderers!
- You killed my child! - Calm down!
That's enough!
Tie him up already.
- Murderers! - Tie him up!
They needed a scapegoat and it's us.
- On what grounds? - Like they need grounds.
- They'll fabricate any evidence. - That's true.
Moga, what do they have on you?
I knew someone at the grocery store, so I could buy oranges.
I admit it.
I got chicken livers.
- Me too. - Didn't everyone do the same?
This isn't funny.
They'll search our asses.
It was stupid, leaving the weapons there.
If someone took them and those bullets are found in bodies,
guess what happens.
Well, they don't need a trial to lynch us.
Let's escape.
- How? - We think of something.
Are you daft? They're too many.
They'll shoot us in a blink.
How did you even get in the force?
I'm not the dimmest bulb here.
I'm not running. That would mean I'm guilty.
I haven't done anything wrong.
- What's that about escaping? - Nothing.
I need to get to the mountains, keep the villa warm.
Sure, man, go.
You go.
Last time I saw him, he was with us, at the fence.
- Maybe he's at the hospital. - Look at him.
They won't believe me.
I told them the truth.
Don't cry. You'll be out before long.
Have some bread.
Attention!
- Everyone up! - Up!
As you were.
Listen up!
Listen here!
Police and Secret Service, come forward.
I'm Colonel Suceavă from Bucharest, some of you know me.
I'm on a mission to rebuild the Police after you lot stained its honour!
Getting angry, are we?
Fuck you, everyone who shot!
I'll get you 20 years behind bars, bastards.
You're compromised!
Ioan, my men didn't shoot!
We're being detained illegally, kept like animals!
This is against human rights!
- Think of our wives! - I'll send someone to fuck them.
Did you think of them when you shot innocent people?
We've killed Ceaușescu, no one will protect you now.
We've put you on 20-day detainment,
General Chițac will sign on the rest.
Colonel Socaciu here is a prosecutor.
He'll make you spit it all out.
Pay attention.
There will be investigations.
You will appear before the Military Court of the National Salvation Front.
Collaborate and confess.
Socaciu, are you out of your mind?
You'd better tell the truth.
This guy interrogated the strikers at the strike in Brașov two years ago!
You shameless Communist!
Shut up, you filthy terrorist!
- I served my country, scum! - By kissing Ceaușescu's ass?
Watch it!
I advise you to tell everything.
Who is worth sacrificing for?
Collaborators will be shown mercy.
- Who is he? - The one who decides who lives.
I'll kill you!
You'll get out of here when I please to check on you!
- Move! - Don't hit me!
Otto!
- How are you? - And you?
- I turned myself in. Nuța's at home. - Where is Nuța?
- That's enough! - What did they do to you?
Ask him what he did! He shot innocent people!
- Move it! - Otto, why did you leave me?
Stop it, you mad woman!
Get back!
Stay there!
- Otto! - Take your hand of me!
We've been waiting for two hours!
We need to piss!
Get in line!
Two by two!
Silence!
- You and your strike. - I'm innocent.
We're all innocent.
- Not exactly. - I mean our group.
Stay there.
Next!
Hey. Want to hear something?
- You're hungry? - No.
See that guy there?
Look!
Grey-haired, droopy-eyed.
- Looking this way. - What?
He's Secret Police, he beat me up years ago
for writing to Free Europe radio.
- Oh, come on. - I mean it.
Are you sure it's him?
Dead sure.
Why'd you write to Free Europe?
The top of their music chart was "Walk Like an Egyptian."
It's a shit song.
- What was the name? -"Walk Like"...
No, his name!
Cizek.
Or Sizek, something like that.
Wait.
Are you Cizek?
Hey! Are you Cizek?
- Say what? - Is it you?
- Why? - Answering a question with a question?
Are you Cizek or not?
No.
This boy here says you're Secret Police
and you beat him for writing to Free Europe.
I don't know him.
It's you, you can't fool me.
Just admit it, a lot can happen in that pool.
Fuck off, I'll call the soldiers.
I'll bash your head in!
He's escaped!
Calm down!
Everybody down!
Down!
On the floor!
- Who fired? - Come outside!
- Who shot? - What is it?
Get the doctor.
What the hell?
He's the administrator of Ceaușescu's villa.
You think I don't know him?
- Well, you asked. - Fucking hell!
Where will it end?
- What do we do with him? - Take him to the infirmary.
Do it quick.
Working hard or hardly working?
- Did they take him away? - Yes.
- How could it happen? - What?
He got hit by our worst shot, that first-year, Codrea.
- I keep thinking, Aurică... - Don't think.
We can't help it.
Maybe.
If we don't set an example, they'll all try to escape at the loo.
- What does the top brass say? -"Keep up the good work," what else?
They don't have to do the dirty work.
I should have up and left.
Over and out.
Then we'd be in that pool.
Smart, aren't you?
I can't feel my feet. My socks are like mud.
Who knows when we get to go home.
I'll treat you to some brandy.
No one's allowed at the loo.
I told them we'll stink up the place.
- I've been holding it for two hours. - Me too.
Chief.
I need to be at my son's christening on the 7th.
That again?
I have my divorce hearing on the 15th.
I've already missed one.
I'm serious. I have to get out.
Easy there, Rambo.
They'll kill you like they killed that poor sod earlier.
Man, that guy could cook!
On the 17th or 18th, he prepared a dinner
at Ceaușescu's villa after a hunt.
Pheasant, sausage...
Change the subject, I'm drooling.
What if someone took my pistol?
I left it on the rack at headquarters.
Why did you?
I don't know, several of us did.
I left mine too.
But you had a pistol with you.
The one Secret Police gave us to defend ourselves on the way out.
It's not registered in my name.
I fired warning shots in the air when we left the building.
Come get warm.
You're so ignorant, this is good for your back.
Better than medicine.
Think we'll live to see daylight?
How so?
What if they pump in water?
Come on!
You think they picked this place randomly?
Quick death, not too painful either.
Who thought Ceaușescu would keep us warm?
How come?
These carpets were made for him at the factory here.
- For the House of the People. - Cheers to him.
Cheers.
Have a smoke.
- Don't move! - Pass that weapon!
Easy.
Soldier, please call my wife, tell her I'm alright.
Thanks.
I thought we had a deal.
How the hell did you get here?
I found a flare gun discarded by the Police building.
I put in a bullet, fired and...
Here I am!
A terrorist.
A public menace.
And you?
Also a terrorist?
Who did you shoot?
I didn't do anything wrong.
What about the 21st?
I was out in the street when you guys fired at us.
- We're free. - Finally, it's over.
- Take care, Steluța. - You too, madam.
Don't cry over it. Men always chase skirts.
- Life goes on. - And we can manage without them!
Bye.
Silivaș and Petrache, come here!
Silivaș and Petrache, now!
Call my wife if you can.
Good luck.
Get him something to eat.
Here, eat.
That's my boy!
That's my boy, you murderers!
My boy!
Murderers!
- Look at fatty! - Go, Stuparu, go!
Get him down!
Șoaită!
Get over here.
- It's my time. - I'm coming with you.
- I'll help him... - Stay put! Only the young guy.
Cool it, man, I'm not running anywhere.
You'll be fine, you'll see.
Get moving!
If he doesn't come back, he's free.
He just has to rat us out.
You think he's a snitch like you, Stuparu?
- I'll mess you up! - Let's see you.
I'll beat you at any sport, Captain Ass!
- Acting all high and mighty! - Come on!
You act so tough!
Let's see how tough you are!
You almost pissed your pants when I caught you at the County Office.
He was begging me for mercy.
Ask him what he did before the 22nd!
You were an informer!
- How do you know? - From them!
They caught him selling chewing gum!
Buying it for one leu, selling it for three!
Acting all Rocky Balboa at the boxing club!
When actually he turned informer!
Really?
- Crâșmaru. - Here.
- Burdujea. - Here.
- Moga. - Here.
- Cizek. - Here.
- Stănese. - Here.
- Porime. - Here.
- Manea. - Here.
Contraband goodies!
Look at him! Ready to party!
What's up there? What did they ask you?
Who shot, where the Secret Police has its safe houses...
How the fuck do I know?
Anyway, these Secret Police guys came out on top.
All those attentions to the top brass didn't help us at all.
All the heaps of flowers and apples I gave Prosecutor Socaciu.
Viorel, they're in power now. I'll end up in Aiud Prison.
Who wants to go to the loo?
- Don't rush in! - Quiet!
I can't do it!
Goal!
Good job!
That doesn't count, it's a foul!
Play ball!
I'm open!
Pass!
It's not fair!
Alright!
Bring a VCR player too!
How about a colour TV?
Bring a VCR player too!
Bring a VCR player!
Eight, seven, six,
five, four, three, two, one...
Happy New Year, man.
Cheers!
Freedom!
Check that ass!
You'll find work somewhere.
There'll always be a demand for someone to chase thieves.
I'll take my son and be off.
I considered it too. Working in Germany.
I'm a Communist Party member to boot.
What are they going to do, lock me up?
Leahu!
Yes?
Come.
Take care.
How long are we going to wait?
- Shut it. - Call Dragoman here!
Shut up! Move it!
- Told you. - I don't care.
You should, it's your future at stake.
Informers get out, you stay in. Is that fair?
Give me some bread.
One, two, three...
Listen up!
Next are Ignat...
Here.
Stănese...
Here.
Hașegan.
Hașegan!
Some instant coffee?
Get us an instant coffee.
Thanks.
Got these from foreign aid.
One's yours if you're reasonable.
I'm fine.
I swear, Viorel.
Your file doesn't look good at all.
Relax, man! This isn't a Communist detective film.
- We know each other. - That's what I thought.
You thought right.
How's the mood in the pool?
Scared, how else?
Now you see that if you behave you get out.
Doesn't feel that way, when you're held at gunpoint.
Well, did you have to shoot civilians?
- I didn't. - You were found armed!
- It wasn't mine. - Oh?
It was from Secret Police. And I didn't shoot it.
Who did, then?
Voicu.
Your captain Voicu?
Yes.
How come the pistol was on you?
He shot, then he got shot, he fell, I fell on top of him,
and picked it up for defense.
Then they hit me and I lost consciousness.
That's all I know.
- So you're innocent. - I am.
And Voicu's a terrorist.
No. I don't know.
But I didn't shoot.
Voicu probably shot in self-defense, it's not like he enjoyed it.
- The guys say they saw you shoot. - Can't be.
Right.
That one's cleared up.
What's with those plans with the tunnels under Sibiu?
- What tunnels, Comrade Colonel? - Drop the "Comrade."
I don't know anything about tunnels.
- Pity. - Why?
If you had told us about the plans,
you'd have got to your son's christening.
It's coming up. Congratulations!
Maybe you know about the Secret Police's secret armories?
Your mates.
- Comrade Colonel... - Hey!
- Colonel, I mean. - Better.
If I knew, I'd tell you.
If I made it up, that would make me a terrorist.
And I'm not!
You're not?
Aren't you guys supermen?
With a super-spray that turns you invisible?
That's a bit much.
That's Judicial Police for you.
Here.
Some Economic Crimes prick was rattling
about how he knows secret plans and tunnels.
Of course I knew he was lying.
I told him to draw them and he started crying.
Now he's in Aiud Prison, with Silivaș and his mate Petrache.
Just enough to scare them, fucking bastards.
No need to worry, they'll get out.
They're already making waves, talking to the right people.
Right.
And now,
let's see what we do about that pistol of yours.
Write this:
"I, the undersigned Viorel..."
NOT DRINKABLE
Here, I don't need them anymore.
It's fine, I won't be here long.
School's starting.
Take them for now, you're shaking.
I don't want them.
Suit yourself.
- Can I have them? - Get a job.
- Where will I find a job, Chief? - You'll find one before I do.
You have your stashes!
See you outside.
Citizens!
Across town, the Army has the situation under control!
The joy of victory is very near!
It is in everyone's interest for peace to reign in our town
and for those guilty of crimes against the people
to be brought to justice.
The Ad-Hoc Military Court will judge them with all severity.
Truth shall prevail!
Justice will be served!
All our work was in vain!
CEAUȘESCU IN THE GRAVE FOR THE VICTIMS IN SIBIU
- We don't want ex-Commies in charge! - That Stratulat guy has to go!
He had his cushy job!
Out with Ceaușescu's henchmen!
THE DEMANDS OF THE ROMANIAN PEOPLE
Then we're as bad as him!
Only those who actually did harm.
No!
- Hello. - Hello.
I'm Viorel Stănese. I was sent by your son Luci.
He gave me the address.
Come in.
- Hello. - Hello.
- What do you want? - We were in the pool together.
Invite the gentleman in. Please, come in.
- How is our boy? - He's alright.
- How do we get him out? - He'll be released soon.
- He's innocent. - You bet.
- How did you get out? - They just let me go.
- I don't know why. - Why did they release you before him?
- Poor child! - What happened with those terrorists?
- There are no terrorists, madam. - Really?
Why was he put in with those Secret Police murderers?
The ones who gave us hell all these years,
kissing Ceaușescu's ass?
What did you do before?
- Let him tell us more about Luci. - What's there to tell?
I just came to tell you he's fine.
He's fine?
You got out and my boy, who's innocent, is still there!
What was your job?
- I'm with the Judicial Police. - Basically Secret Police.
The ones who shot at the people!
- Why? - I didn't shoot!
Bastards!
- Bastards! - Stop it!
Bastards!
- Stop! - Damn you!
TERRORIST SECRET POLICE
Just a minute!
Our lovely guest tonight
has recorded a song inspired by the bloody days of the Revolution.
Like all of us, she has supported those who fought for freedom.
So, before we meet her, let us have a moment of silence
for those who sacrificed themselves for a better world.
Freedom
My soul called to you without a voice
Yesterday, oppressed by heavy chains
Freedom
Today, I, too, sing with you
Yesterday I could only
Catch a glimpse of you
What eternal mystery are you?
We stand in awe of you
You have the power
To turn a thought into strength
IN DECEMBER 1989, 2,000,000 BULLETS, 500 CANNON SHOTS,
AND 650 HELICOPTER MISSILES WERE FIRED IN SIBIU.
NINETY-NINE PEOPLE DIED, ANOTHER 272 WERE INJURED.
FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-TWO PEOPLE WERE ILLEGALLY DETAINED IN THE LOCAL POOL.
THE LAST OF THEM WERE RELEASED ON FEBRUARY 1st, 1990.
Now we all understand
You are something
To fight and to die for
