a killer in horror movies.

And if you dispute that, I'll kill you.

One of the things I've
always been curious about

is what happens to us when we die.

What's on the other side?

Does our spirit or our
energy go elsewhere?

Are some of us trapped here?

Why are some locations so haunted

and other ones you never
hear anything about?

These are questions that I've been hunting

for the answers to for 13 years.

That's what got me
interested in the paranormal

in the first place, and
that's what brought me here.

(eerie music)

- Balsam only has a population of 49.

The school is now used
as a community center.

The train depot's long gone.

The Grand Old Lady is
still here in Balsam.

It's 112 years old.

I think she's a giant, stoic structure,

originally built almost
as a slap in the face.

I think that as beautiful as it is,

and as grand as it is,
and as popular as it was,

I think that, honestly, from
day one of this structure,

I mean, you've gotta
think this land was taken

from the Native Americans.

Rutherford Trace came 200 yards
in front of this building,

and then not only are we
gonna take your property,

but we're gonna build this
giant, grand structure

right in the center of it, you know,

it's almost like a
direct slap in the face.

So I think that originally

it may not have had

the best energy to begin with.

This place has several layers of activity.

It's so tangible that you can
almost literally separate it

into layers as to what
was on the land before,

what came from the original structure,

what's military related,
Native American related,

guest related, staff
related, the residual,

just kind of hanging out
railroad type of stuff going on.

There's a lot of activity here

and there's a lot of energy flow here,

it seems like there's not anywhere

in the building where you aren't passing

through some sort of energy.

- Well, I was told from
the beginning when I,

in the process of purchasing,

but I kind of thought that
it was a hidden agenda

that nobody wanted me to be
here and purchase this property.

However, when I closed the deal
and moved into the property,

being the skeptic, denied
the presence of them,

and they introduced
themselves to me very quickly.

- [Woman] Okay, so if it did
move, it should move again,

'cause it's moved quite a bit.

Twice that I've seen.

- [Amanda] Yeah, so if it's
real, it should continue

to do it.
- Right, so it shouldn't

just stop because we're watching it.

- [Woman] Okay, so I saw something under,

oh, I'm shaking right now.

(woman gasps)

It's opening up.
- The door just shut, okay.

No, no, no, they're both moving.

And so is that curtain,
there has to be a breeze.

It has to be a breeze,
see how that's moving.

- [Woman] But I saw the
other door first underneath.

- [Woman] They move at the same time.

It's like one opens and one closes.

- [Woman] We seriously
gotta get some door latches.

Like, this is absolutely crazy.

- [Woman] Okay, so, if
this isn't just a breeze,

can you tell,

can you talk to us through the Ovilus?

- [Woman] It said famous, palace, Alice?

- [Woman] That door just opened
and the other one did not.

I kind of feel like maybe you can.

Natural position of these doors is,

especially this one, it wants to close.

It's a closed position.

This one is propped, just a touch,

is the natural position of these doors.

So when this one closes
fully there's resistance,

it's wanting to open, and
when this one is open,

there's resistance, it's wanting to close.

So these that, you know, it's
one thing, in my opinion,

it's one thing to catch
them opening and closing,

and moving, and kind of breathing,

but to open and hold itself open

for a considerable amount
of time is something

that I've personally never seen before.

- I'd have to go, I want to go look

after we're done.
- Sure!

- Absolutely, and just
see the natural position.

And you'll see that this
here, especially this door,

this is not the natural position.

- 'Cause the, you know,
the first impression

is it has to be a breeze.
- Sure, yeah.

- Because especially when
one closes and one opens.

- Yeah, if they're moving in sync.

- Yeah, it seems like
that's a breeze coming from

one side or the other.
- Yeah.

Yeah, for sure.

I also want to bring it
to your attention as well

that we had a lot of movement here.

We had a lot of action in this 15 minutes.

And when we shut this down
and we all were going to bed,

we put a steel camera on
these doors, just to see.

- For how long?
- Just a stationary camera.

Overnight.

- What I'd like to do is, first of all,

go see these doors, of course.

And then given that,

I think this place has been
here 112 years or something.

I've been into a lot of
places to investigate,

but this has the coolest
feel, as far as, you know,

the age of the building.

You know, I've been to all the other ones,

Waverly's and stuff,

but when it's a residential
place, for some reason,

it interests me more.

And I'd like to see
those doors and maybe do,

can we do a walkthrough--

- Absolutely!
- The property?

- Let's do it, yeah!
- Okay, good!

- The science of this is
that this device is preloaded

with hundreds of thousands of words,

each linked to a different
electromagnetic frequency.

And it is alleged that a
spirit can then trigger

certain electronic frequencies

and trigger words to communicate with us.

So that's how scientifically
the device works.

(grunts)

- [Kane] Anyone here

Has to be a lot of history.

Oh, are those the doors?
- Mm-hmm.

- [Man] Yeah, see, these
things are super light!

- Are we in the kitchen?
- Yeah.

Well, and if you'll notice
these doors are not light doors,

they're not fiberglass
doors or aluminum doors.

- And there was enough
air, while we were in here,

that it was moving the
curtains just a little bit.

But like I said, it was just too.

- [Kane] Anybody in this kitchen with me?

- [Woman] We lost him.

- Anybody?

Just thought I'd take a quick walk around

and see if it's anything.

- Is there anybody in here

who would like to communicate with us?

- How are you feeling?

Are you picking up on anything right now?

- I mean, I'm picking up on the,

a lot of the residual stuff.

I think that what we have
coming is coming later.

- Yeah.
- Mm-hmm.

Like the calm before the storm?

- You know?

The crucifix has been put
in here for protection,

and I don't know exactly
what has happened in here

for them to do that,

but I know that somebody would
have to be pretty afraid.

- Fairly recently put up there?

- I'm not sure when it's been put up.

- I've noticed that in the corners

of this place, they'll crucifix.

Like, up the second
floor, over in the corner,

there's a cross put up there.

So there's been definitely
some not putting--

- Yeah, there's been rituals here

of all different sorts over the years,

but the recent rituals are
lots of protections spells,

and binding spells,

and that sort of thing
have been done here.

I can sense that all over.

- A lot of workers were
having experiences and stuff.

- [Woman] I think that she
has a little bit of trouble

keeping staff.

- Really?!
- Yeah.

Now these two pieces of furniture

also came with the building.

So, not real sure exactly
how old they are, but,

they're original pieces.

- [Woman] That light was flickering.

- Yeah, I know.
- Did you see that?

- Yeah.
- What?

- [Man] Those lights just flickered.

- And this used to be a pretty
high dollar place to come,

when the train was really moving,

and Balsam was really a happening--

- [Kane] Are the tracks close?

- The tracks are right there.

And they're actually built on,

like a thoroughfare this
whole land, this whole,

everything that this was built
on used to be tribal land,

this whole thing.

And when they founded
Waynesville in Haywood County,

they actually put bounties
on tribal families

that wouldn't leave and they
would burn their homes down.

They would just murder entire families

in order to make the surrounding town

of Silva, and Waynesville,
and those places.

But this whole entire area

was driven out during the
Trail of Tears and all that.

And the history before
this place was here,

is super rich with Native American legends

and that kind of thing.

And then they built this

kind of big monstrosity

and right in the middle of everything.

And so it's still kind
of, the reservation's,

it's super close to us right now.

So there's no telling what kind of stuff

we can pick up on here.
- Yeah.

- [Woman] And some places you go,

and it talks constantly,
and some places you go,

and you don't ever hear anything.

- Going up to the second floor.

Anyone on this second floor

that wants to make their
presence known by this device?

Anyone in this room like to say something?

- Putting a crucifix in
the corner of buildings

is to keep the barriers
from one side to the next,

a safer and less demonic spot.

I don't think this place
is demonic whatsoever,

but I think people are afraid of ghosts.

And so they, you know,
they've seen spirits.

- That's really not in a corner.

- That's a corner--
- Of this hallway.

- Yeah, but it's still in the corner.

And each corner, because it
opens up the entire room to it.

And it's just a way of them feeling safer.

- I would love to see something
come through this device

regarding this crucifix.
- Ask it, talk it.

- Is there any reason that

- Is there anyone here
who wants to take credit

for scaring somebody to
the point that they felt

like they needed to hang
a cross in this hall?

- Pretty interesting place,

I guess it's supposed to
protect the entire hallway, huh?

- Yeah, I think every hallway has one.

- You have to look at it,

it's like Where's Waldo, but crosses.

When you walk in here, you'll find them.

- Well, throughout the building,

you're going to see these welcome signs

on some rooms and not others.

And what those are is

where previous activity has happened.

They're almost markers.

So these are the rooms that people

who have been here in
the past have experienced

or caught relevant evidence
would be in these rooms

with the welcome signs.

- Tell me your name through this device.

Whoever feels that this
room is personal to them.

- Of course.
- For sure.

and see if your feeling changes.

I just want to test my
theory that nothing happens

when I'm around, typically.

- Can I see that?

My experience from the past,

that things always happen to
people I'm with when I leave.

I feel like I'm open to things happening

and it never does unless I leave.

Waverly, all these places I've been to,

soon as I leave, now watch,
when they come out of there.

I'll bet you, they say
something happened more

than when I was in there.

I hope not because I'd
rather not that be the case.

Could have been just coincidental but,

it's interesting to find
out, I like to test this.

that Kane's not as scary as he seems.

- Wow, and after we were discussing,

wondering what synn is, then the next word

that just came up is guess.

And then rocket.

That's odd.

I think lip is the coolest
one I've seen so far.

- [Man] Why does lip
mean something to you?

- Because of my tattoo

in my lip.
- Yeah.

- Which says kill, as most people know.

- Which is literally a sin.

- And to a lot of
people, tattoos are sins.

- Yeah.

- Lip, why did you say the word lip?

Is it because of my tattoo?

I know it's not the best word

to have tattooed on your body, but.

It's what it is.

Kinda what I'm known for,
so I just embrace it.

- There's energy in there.

- I wish I could say I feel
uncomfortable somewhere,

but I really don't, not yet, anyway.

I mean, no, I feel very comfortable
in this entire building.

You guys feel the same, Mark?

- I felt that way until

about two o'clock in
the morning last night.

I woke up

and I felt

like there was a presence,
but nothing evil.

Just something that I feel, I can,

I felt like it's, this sounds weird,

and I know it's because we're
preparing for the thing,

but it was like,

I had this feeling that they
were sprucing up for us,

getting ready for us,
so it's a weird feeling,

but it definitely felt like something,

I don't want to say foreboding,

but something upcoming that,

and I'm sure it's me
excited about doing this,

but that's the only
thing I really picked up,

and I did feel it was some type of energy,

and I hope that's what it is.

And not just me, you know,

dreaming it up because this place

definitely has an energy to it.

I'd like it to be a
lot stronger right now.

- Yeah, I slept really well last night.

- I slept really well.
- No problems.

- I woke up like at two o'clock,

and like bolted up and you know,

and I had that feeling.

And then I went and went
right back to sleep.

- I feel like every time
it gets handed to you,

it says something.
- I know!

Every time it's handed back to me.

one by one, his whole crew quit.

- Because of incidents?
- Because of activity

that happened to them.

Terrified.

that tends to amp it up.

As soon as it's handed
back to me, it talks again.

- Yeah, it can be very, very confusing

because you do have,

you've got to think of
these as like passageways.

And there, I don't even
know where to start.

There's so many layers to what is here.

There's things that were
attached to the land

long before anything was built here.

You've got the native American stuff.

You've got the soldiers
that came through here.

Many who were injured, brought
here and even died here.

And then you've got staff over the years.

You've got visitors who loved this place.

And then on top of that,
you have timestamps.

You have residual energy that
just constantly is moving

and they don't see you,
they don't know you're here.

They walk right through you.

They just keep doing their thing.

And when you get in
these high traffic areas,

you often get more than
one entity fighting

for the chance to talk,

frightened, to say what they want to say,

and it can get incredibly confusing.

- If all this is true,

for any kind of entity
or spirit to come up

and actually say anything or touch it,

it takes a lot of energy to do that.

- It does, it does.

- Do you think it's like,

all they can muster
sometimes is like, Doug?

- I would say sometimes, yeah.

Yeah, depending on the situation.

You know, and it depends on what kind

of conduit you have around.

If you're having a thunderstorm,

if you're sitting on a limestone slab,

if there's running water nearby,

the snow with the static electricity,

those things will certainly amp it up.

But yeah, yeah.

I mean, they have to
pull from what they can

to do as little as they can.

- But also they don't know what this is.

And so they don't know what frequency

is attached to what words,

so what we're picking up
may be completely random,

but it could be practicing.

It could be like, "Okay,
maybe if I do this,"

maybe it's learning with us.

- You know, it'd be a trip

if like some of these
words we're picking up

that it's translating
into English is Cherokee.

You know, if we are picking it up,

and that's the only way the
machine could pick it up

because, you know, we don't
know, how to speak Cherokee.

- Just said little.

- Oh, then that's not fair.

- [Man] That's the nursery.

- The nursery right here.

- [Kane] This used to be the nursery?

- Uh-huh, It was like a playroom
where they kept the kids.

So the parents could do whenever
it was they wanted to do.

- [Kane] Very cool that it said little.

I just, you know, what I worry about

with a lot of this kind
of stuff is trying to

make things fit and
make things meaningful.

And that, you know, I don't know.

I just, I always try to
avoid doing that myself

or making it, "Wait a
minute, that could mean."

- And there's never a moment
where we're going to say,

"This is definitively what it means,"

but the benefit to, sometimes,

trying to interpret what's going on,

the only real benefit is hoping

that you can get a response.

If you're getting it right,
you'll get a response.

If you're getting it wrong,
maybe you'll get that response.

But that's really the only benefit

to trying to interpret
in the moment, you know?

The goal and the hope

is that it'll all come together for us,

that they'll give us enough information

and they'll give us enough
of that communication,

so that we don't have to tell
their story, they tell it.

- I meant to ask, maybe I can ask later,

Candy, downstairs, said she was shoved

in a storage room or something?

Do you know where that is?
- I do.

- [Man] I think that storage room was--

- [Woman] It's to the left,

Only place in the whole
building that I was afraid

was up here.

- I like it!

- [Kane] Why is this Henry's hallway?

- It's believed that Henry

is the malicious entity that is here.

And he was trapped in here.

- [Kane] I'm seeing if it says anything.

- But he was the malicious
energy that was here.

They gave him this name, I
don't know if they found it

in documents or what,
but they named him this.

And they bound him to this area here.

And you'll see the black tourmaline.

- [Kane] What is that?

- This is black tourmaline here.

- What is that, rock?
- It is, it's a stone,

and what is used for is
to absorb negative energy.

And then you have these selenite pieces,

and the selenite pieces
are used for protection.

There's several uses,

it can turn off psychic ability,

it shuts down activity.

Selenite is known to--
- Why specifically here?

Is this a real active room or something?

- They've had several rituals done.

The last time we were here,

this door was completely bound,

and I noticed that it is not this time,

but it had been bound multiple times.

almost as like a barrier that, you know,

this entity's trapped in here,

you cannot cross this barrier.

If you're going to be here,

and we don't know how to get rid of you,

you're going to stay right here.

We're at least going to
have you centralized.

- Can we go in here tonight?

- [Man] We're negotiating that.

That requires an individual
waiver to the hotel.

- Can we take down the
safety stones if we do?

Or even just when we come here tonight?

- She doesn't even want

to let us in there.

- Well, that's intriguing,

and that just makes us
want to go in there.

- [Man] She said two people got hurt

in their own paranormal investigations.

I mean, I'm not trying to blow it up,

I'm just telling me what she tells me.

- And that's the owner

Every time I've ever done an investigation

and used that Ovilus,

I've been called a witch.

- Yeah, and I felt it, I knew it, yeah.

- Kane, walk up to the
door and ask it a question.

- Whatever.

- I'd like to enter this room.

- [Man] Damn crystals.

- Just sorta an experiment,

I'm going to take those crystals down.

And, Kane, you approach it again.

- [Woman] She's getting goosebumps again.

- So I'm right at the door.

How would you feel about that?

Not trying to antagonize,

They did not like me doing that.

- I think it said threat,

- That was a big one.

- I would like to personally say creepy.

The guy that has been burned grabs the--

- Okay, so, basically what we do

with the Estes Method is we're going to,

I will, essentially, be putting on a set

of noise canceling headphones,

and blindfolding myself.

And those headphones are then
attached to the spirit box,

which is the device
that runs off of Hertz,

which are radio waves.

And as I'm getting sounds,

my roommate for years

So I was trying to see
if I could, you know,

if it, in fact, was referring
to somebody in my life,

this experiment in the ballroom.

We've got the SLS camera again,
it makes the humanoid forms.

And we were told that if you play

music from particular eras,
that there's more activity,

lights will flicker, things will move,

the curtains will sway,
that sort of thing.

So we decided to put the
music on with a speaker,

turn it up, kind of recreate
that natural environment

of what would happen in that ballroom

and just see if we could
catch something on SLS.

And the reason we did this was because

the odds of seeing it with
the naked eye, slim to none,

you know, we can take still shots.

We are not likely to catch anything.

A regular video camera is
not going to catch anything,

but with this SLS camera,

it gives us this
opportunity because it will,

and it's job is to try and
catch these humanoid forms.

So it was a good opportunity

to see if we could catch
somebody reacting to the music.

And this residual stuff
that's happening here,

it could trigger that to start up.

And so we go in and turn the music on.

Mark asks Maeve to dance.

And so, they go out on the dance floor,

and they're slow dancing,
and to the right of them,

a humanoid shape forms.

And it literally bounces
it shoulders to the beat.

It's swaying and dancing with
them, it's moving its leg.

They would go to the left,
it would go with them.

Really, one of the coolest things

I have personally seen as
a paranormal investigator.

I've been doing investigations
for, you know, geez.

I don't even know how
many years, a long time.

And as I said, all over the place,

and even when I go somewhere

to shoot a film,

if I know of a place that supposedly

has some paranormal history,

I'll try and go over there by myself,

not even telling anyone
that I was doing it.

And not necessarily with equipment,

but just to see if I
could experience anything.

So I really never have.

I would have to say that this location

is for me, personally,

the most

activity, I guess you could say,

that I've witnessed.

and going into that,

you know, room that nobody wants to go in,

where I was by myself last night,

I almost never feel uncomfortable.

I just feel like, maybe,

uncomfortable because of the
temperature or something,

but last night in that room,

when you go in a room, and of course,

the stories you've heard
about it play into that.

When the woman that
works the front desk here

says she was thrown in that room.

And when you ask her about it,

you know,

you can tell, she's
not making the shit up.

So when somebody looks
right into your face

and says, "I was thrown,"

that's pretty hard to just blow off as,

"Ah, come on," it couldn't have happened.

Because she hit the ground
for some reason, so.

You hear stories like that,

and that sets the tone
for you going in there.

And most people don't want to
go in that room by themselves.

So that's why I like to do that.

I'm

of the opinion that you
can never really, truly

be uncomfortable in an investigation

until you go to the
worst place by yourself

and with no lights on.

I just had an IR camera, a body cam,

no light in there at all.

And I was in there for 32 minutes.

I have to say

that was the least comfortable

I've ever been in a location, ever.

Because most of the time I
just sit there, and like,

"Okay, well, this is the
same old thing again.

"It's dark, it's quiet, okay."

But something about that
room was different for me.

I guess maybe it sounds
weird, but I enjoyed it.
