Since then, Marlee has become
a household name

in both television and film,

and uses her platform
to advocate

for the many unsung heroes.

only been a best friend

and confidant to Marlee
for over 30 years...

that I've admired for so long.

ASL teacher,

she's been both
an inspiration to Marlee...

And she loves
to have people come over.

But I wanna be able
to have us move outside.

[Jonathan] ...and to many
in the deaf community.

to what will be
an incredible space.

She's won Emmys,

Do you remember what movie
she won the Oscar for?

It was her very first movie.

Children of a Lesser God?

Somebody knows
their movie trivia.

But also she's had epic roles,

Seinfeld, Law & Order.

Everything about
her career is impressive.

[Jonathan]
If I'm not mistaken,

when Marlee
won her Academy Award,

she was not only
the youngest person

ever to win Best Actress,

but she also was the first
deaf person to win an Oscar.

[Drew] Yeah.

You know,
she's such a huge advocate

for the deaf community

and trying
to bring opportunity

to deaf actors as well

that she's worked with
over the years.

But Lisa,
the two of them are thick

as thieves,
and Lisa is the same.

She's like
the hub of her community

and doing everything she can

as an advocate
for the deaf community.

[Jonathan] Lisa has a backyard

that's a little
underutilized.

If this is gonna be the hub
where she can have

all of her friends around her,

I know how important that is

'cause we love being able
to just surround ourselves

at home
with family and friends.

[Drew] Well,
I think there's a lot

we can learn
from Marlee about design

specifically
for the deaf community.

[Jonathan]
Oh, she just texted me.

She is in the backyard
at Lisa's place.

[Jonathan] Lisa is out
of town but her daughters

have given Marlee
access to the house.

Marlee has brought along
her interpreter, Jack.

They bought speak
American Sign Language

and they've been working
together for over 30 years.

-So excited to be here.

[Drew] Jack will help
all of us communicate

with each other
so that we can keep this

big surprise
for Lisa on track.

So, this is so exciting.

We've been wanting
to meet you for years.

I mean,
aside from everything you do

as an amazing actress,
we also just love

how you build community
and support community.

-It's really amazing.
-[Jack] I'm glad to be here

to be able to represent
our community,

the deaf community

and to do this
for our friend, Lisa.

I guess, before we jump in,

tell us a little bit
about Lisa and why you think

this backyard space
would be so great for her.

[Jack] Well, Lisa is somebody

that I've admired for so long.

Lisa, for one
is an incredible mom

to two lovely girls,
and she's always working.

She continually works
to make ends meet.

[Jack speaking]

We've met in 1985.

When we first met her,
I think it was here

in Los Angeles,
there was the Deaf Olympics.

And I was
visiting here from...

I think it was Chicago,
where I'm from.

When I moved to Los Angeles
and we met again

on many occasions
and we had lots of parties...

She had lots of parties.

We have a lot
of mutual friends.

And then
fast forward 30 years,

what an incredible journey
that seems like

the universe keeps
bringing you back together.

[Jack] And every time
I see her,

I'm always excited.

She always makes me happy.

But not only that,
she loves people.

And she loves to connect,
she loves to give,

and she's very passionate

for our language,

American Sign Language.

And she is a teacher
of American Sign Language

at a community
college nearby.

And so I want to be able
to give back

for being so generous,
for just being Lisa.

[Drew] All right. Well,
we can make this happen.

What is it you're sort
of picturing for the space?

[Jack] Well,
for Lisa, for one,

loves to have
people come over,

because all are girlfriends
and all of us are deaf,

we typically gather inside
the house in the kitchen.

It's not only for the food
but because the lighting

is usually
best in the kitchen.

-It's brighter lights...
-[Drew] Oh, okay.

more than
any part of the house.

But I wanna be able
to have us move outside...

[Jack speaking]

But every time we come here
and we go to the backyard,

I look at the backyard
and say, "It's a nice space."

But, yeah, she doesn't
take advantage of it.

So something
needs to be done for her

to entertain us all
not only in the house.

And she loves water.

Would you wanna have
like a spa for her?

Does... Would she use that?

[Jack] I would think
that would be great. Please.

Oh, yeah. There is more than
enough room

for a hot tub back here.

[Jack speaking]

[Jonathan] There's so much
potential here.

This is the blank canvas
to what will be

an incredible space.

everything is beautiful
but also functional.

while she's preparing

So like a grill
with breakfast bar seating.

[Jack] And then being aware
of the space,

it's important for us,

we're all signing,

so we need room,

perhaps more than you might
be accustomed to,

to be able to sign.

-We call it deaf-friendly.
-Okay.

That's good to know.

This is really great
'cause usually we're learning

about a homeowner's
design aesthetic and function

for them
how they live in the home.

But this is one extra layer
what we need to learn

to make sure
this is deaf-friendly design.

-Yeah.
-[Jack] Absolutely,

because we don't want anything

that would obstruct
our line of sight.

We all have to be able
to see each other.

So I'd like to be able
to have the opportunity

to make it easy for everybody
to talk to each other...

-Yeah.
-in terms of design.

Or even for a seating area,
how much grass

would she wanna have versus,
like, building a structure,

having a pergola sitting area?

Well, I mean,
I think the center area

-would be great for grass.
-Yeah.

And I think maybe
have some kind of seating,

like you just said
pergolas here.

Yeah. Okay.

Maybe something
like that here.

Did you say pergolas plural?

-Oh.
-I think it will be nice.

Two. Two or three.

-Or nine or ten, twelve.

Here's a question, though.

So you said that you like
to have a spa

as well as breakfast
bar seating

and a couple of pergolas.

So to me, that almost sounds
that there's,

like, four areas
for congregating.

I mean, we have
enough space for it.

She loves to grow new plants.

We have to figure out
a place to put these plants.

the one thing that's nice

is you can create somewhere
where she can actually

work to, you know,
pot plants and do all that.

or maybe against the wall
of the house.

-[Drew] Yeah.
-[Jack] Listen, I don't know.

I'm not really expert
when it comes to plants

and whether
they need sun or a shade.

[Jonathan] This backyard
has so much potential

and there's a lot
to think about.

How do we bring
these zones together

and make this
a deaf-friendly space?

So before we design anything,
we need to do some research.

And so,
does Lisa have any clue

that you're doing this at all?

Is she... Where is Lisa,
by the way?

[Jack] So Lisa is right now

away for a month in Detroit.

But her two daughters are here

and they're the ones
who let me in

and we had a discussion

about what we're planning
to do

and what we thought,
and the ideas and--

Oh, so the daughters
are gonna be our, like,

inside people
to get us extra details?

-[Jack] Wink, wink.

Uh-huh. All right.

She is gonna love
this yard when it's done.

which is not a lot of time.

So we're prepping the yard

for when the permits
come in so that it's go time.

we need to do everything
we can to get a head start.

of our month-long reno.

And although Marlee
has done a great job

with the jackhammering,
this is a huge project

and we have
a tight timeline to keep.

All the utilities we need,
gas, water, electricity,

they all get run
from the house

but we can't start
any of that

until this concrete is gone.

We're starting
from scratch back here

including upgrades
like an irrigation system.

And because
this is California,

we're planting
drought-tolerant grass.

Creating
a deaf-friendly space

is the most
important job for us.

I just need
Marlee's stamp of approval

on the plans before
we actually build anything.

It's like
a picnic of design stuff.

-Where is the food?

You don't
wanna chew on this stuff

because it'll break
your teeth.

how Lisa might use the space,

how you think this
would work well for her?

[Jack] No, you've done

because it's open

and when you come out
of the house right here,

you'll be able
to see it all in one view,

you can see where
your friends are located,

you can see if whether
they're sitting in the spa

or they're in the pergola here

or the pergola there talking,

eating in the kitchen,
outdoor kitchen there.

People will wave to each other

to get each other's attention.

Actually,
you know what would be great,

why don't you mark up
anything that you think

is no good,
how would you change it.

[Jack] Okay. So for sure here
rounded like that.

[Jonathan] Okay.

That we can do.

[Jack] These should swivel.

And in this area here,

again, curved area.

And as far as the spa area,
this is nice here

because they're able
to look at each other.

[Jonathan] Right.

But overall,
would you say the layout

of these zones you like
because it does leave

a nice big grassy area
in the middle?

Yeah, grass here.

[Jonathan] I love it.

So, let's talk actual
materials for the deck.

We have these options for all
of the wood around the spa.

-[Marlee] Right.
-[Jonathan] Yeah?

[Marlee] Ooh.

[Jonathan] What realm
do you think

you would wanna go
and what color?

-No.
-[Jack] No to that one.

[Jonathan] Too light.

[Jack] This one's too orange.

So, a little more modern?
This will be really beautiful

and it'll modernize the space.

So what we might
wanna consider

is then what material
do we go with here

because the base of this

is all done
in like a white stucco

and then we've got stainless
steel drawers and storage.

Do you wanna do
a lighter stone,

a medium stone,
or a dark stone?

-What would Lisa like?
-[Jack] Not to that.

I think I'm a little bit
undecided about these two,

the contrast
to the white stucco,

you said it was white stucco?

Yeah.

[Jack] I like that.

[Jonathan] You like the dark?

[Jack speaking]

So, the nice thing
is because we're going

a little darker here
with the stone,

it actually pulls
from the darker tone

of the decking around the spa.

So I feel like this
is gonna create a really nice

dynamic when it comes
to the overall palette.

Now that I have approval
on my plan,

we can get started.

Lisa loves her greenery
so with the old hardscape

and grass cleared out,
we can get working

on this outdoor oasis
that will double

as an entertaining hotspot.

We'll start by dividing
the yard into featured zones.

Zones one and two
will both be defined

by pergolas that will be
home to seating areas

that offer unobstructed
sightlines for guests.

As Marlee suggested,
under one,

a round table for dining
that allows everyone

to be a part
of the conversation.

And under the other,
a sleep lounge vibe

will offer a chic spot
for evening cocktails

or relaxing respite
for Lisa after a long day.

Zone three
will feature a massive

hot tub with functional
integrated lighting

tucked into a custom-built
U-shaped seating area,

boasting flower boxes
and all centered

around a posh fire pit

that will make Lisa's party
the talk of the town.

Finally, zone four,
a new concrete patio

with pathway lighting
will be the perfect

foundation for Lisa's
five-star outdoor kitchen.

Portside counters
and a massive grill

will offer the chef and Lisa
everything she needs

to hang out with family
or host friends.

[Jack] A wow-factor for sure

like you don't wanna leave
the house.

Yeah, exactly.

She may never go back
in the house,

we can probably
just close off this door,

she only needs that here.

-Amazing.
-I'll take the house.

[Jack] And I'll take

This is gonna be incredible.

It's the end of week one

and now that the utilities
have been roughed in

below the dirt,
we're ready for concrete.

Yeah, we're pouring
concrete in four areas

and all of them
have a rebar base

just for increased strength
against cracking

and of course one section

has to support
a large hot tub

that when filled can weigh
as much as two tons.

Well, the foundation
for the kitchen patio

and the footings
for the pergolas don't need

to be as strong but we are
thinking longevity here,

this backyard
will be built to last.

Getting this job done
on schedule is critical

because we need 48 hours
for this concrete

to cure and harden
before work can continue.

So, while we wait
for things to dry,

this is the perfect time
for me

to go and find
Lisa's dream hot tub.

This is the kind of shopping
that just makes life fun

Yeah, just some of the perks

What's the difference between

[Max] Well, this company's
been innovative

with the technology,
these are patented jetpacks,

they're removal,
you can switch them around.

so you can choose?

So, like if this is
my preferred seat

but I like that jetpack,

you know, how it hits my back,

is we're both tall guys

you know, situation,

And with supplies arriving
every few hours,

to stay on schedule,

we're not only
gonna finish up the pergolas,

but Marlee's back to help us

install a stabilizer system
for our gravel.

And I'm a huge fan
of this material

especially near a source
of water like this.

[Jonathan] Yeah,
no rotting wood overtime

and also
there won't be any need

for future sanding
or painting.

Lisa could easily get
30 years out of this.

[Drew] The outdoor kitchen
has also arrived,

and unlike an indoor kitchen,
this is almost
entirely assembled

because it has
a seamless plaster finish

to help keep it
weather-tight.

[Jonathan] Countertops
will also help with that

and they're coming soon,
so Marlee's back

to help us prep for them.

this is a stone

that is much more durable

[Jonathan] I have to say,
designing in the round

is really creating
some stunning curves

throughout the backyard
and sightlines.

And once the final phase
of the irrigation system

and the new lighting
are finally in place,

we'll be able
to lay down the grass,

and that will transform
everything.

But it is so busy back here

that we're moving
to the front yard

to build the plant stand

for all of Lisa's beloved
potted plants.

and the last big impact
we can make

is repainting the house.

and relaxing,

the backyard has almost
become an extension

of Lisa's home.

The only thing better

Before, you could have a whole
bunch of people back here

and there was space for it,

lounging areas
that were comfortable.

It would've just been
lawn chairs.

And I told them how important
plants were to you.

So we really made an effort
to preserve

at the same time, clean, trim.

how beautifully manicured

everything is now.

And so low maintenance

with all the irrigation
built in.

Even the stone,

you have a stabilizer
product under the stone.

So you can feel
that it doesn't feel as loose

as regular gravel.

We want it to be beautiful,
but also functional.

That deaf-friendly design
like you said,

having circular or wrap-around
areas for seating,

same with the tub.

[Jack] I did have
an opportunity

to explain how it works,

being able to see each other,

and making sure that
there were no obstructions.

I love it.

I know my daughter
they're gonna love this.

I can't wait
until I can spend time

with my whole family
back here,

and friends that we have.

It's gonna be amazing.

I am so excited. I can't wait.

The one huge thing

that Marlee said
over and over again

aside from the hot tub

was that you really wanted
an outdoor kitchen

and you would use it,
like, every week.
