I mean, the chemo got us some great positive results.

If you get worse, you may not be strong enough to take more chemo.

not to mention across country.

about how Karen's role in this whole thing has been.

Okay, guys, let's get down to our news reporter Daician Derrico.

How's weather down there, Daician?

[Daician] Yes, Dallas. Everybody definitely make sure

you guys move out of... [indistinct]

...because there's a long and a strong hurricane here, you guys.

-As you guys can see, all the dust... -[kid 1] La-la-la-la-la!

[Daician] I'm Daician Derrico, reporting back to you, Dallas.

So, I'm closing this door

'cause I do not want a spin off

of what happened the other day.

[sighs] But, I know you're not right with me,

and I'm for sure not right with you.

But at the same time,

we're moving into a bigger house.

This is a blessing, this something we both wanted.

So to be here,

-that doesn't make sense. -No, it doesn't at all.

[Deon] But of course, you're the one that walked out.

Karen and I recently got into a huge blowup argument

over Darian going to college in New York.

I mean, we have enough stress right now

moving a family of 16 people into a new home,

because I have a new tenant moving into this house next month.

And it's a lot of extra pressure.

So, for the sake of the children and Darian,

Karen and I really need to get this thing worked out.

I feel a certain way, you feel a certain way.

We definitely need to talk to Darian,

but we still need to be right, you and I.

We can't look like refuting in front of her.

This is serious.

We just should be on the same page at all times.

Karen has always been a hands on, great mother,

but I think that Karen is pushing Darian

to go to the East Coast,

because it's what Karen would have wanted for herself.

-You done? -I'm done for now.

All of the programs that they have been a part of, right?

I found them.

When it came back to me like, "You're pushing her into this,"

I was only going off of what I was being told like,

"Ooh, I love to write. Ooh, I love to do this."

That's how these programs was found.

I didn't feel a need to come and talk to you.

It was just a simple fact, Derrico, that I've been handling this all along.

I know Derrico has his opinions of it,

but I understand the importance of what an higher education is.

So, yeah, I want her to go.

Especially knowing that it wasn't always easy for women, in general,

to be able to attend college, let alone a Black woman.

[Deon] I'm more taken aback by the fact that

you just decided this and I know none of it.

I mean, her college?

This is a pivotal point in her life,

and I've actually spoken with Darian.

She's told me point blank that she felt pressured.

And I get it.

You know, what child wants to think that

they're letting their parent down?

If she gets accepted in,

she gotta take this, at least try it!

I want things to be easier for her.

-Hey, baby... -[Karen] I want things to be better for her.

-You don't want things to be for her like it was for you. -And I also feel like...

-Right, and I also feel like... -Got it.

...this is the one time I feel like she just needs that push.

We just have to respect our children's

decision upon their own lives.

And when she tell you that she doesn't wanna go, you're going to accept that.

I'm gonna really encourage her to go.

Doing something new is, it's always scary.

And most children, they wanna take the safe route.

So you know, I'm happy for the both of us to talk to Darian

so I can find out if she's really feeling pushed.

But it's a part of our jobs as parents to make sure that,

you know, our children don't sleep on opportunities.

I'm gonna still really encourage her.

I'm not pushing her, I'm really encouraging her.

A few weeks ago, I decided to stop taking my chemo

and focus on natural healing.

Although I sometimes have moments of pain,

overall, my quality of life seems to be improving.

Good job!

And I'm so thankful to God that I'm still here

so that I can enjoy these moments with my grandbabies.

-Yeah, boy, these babies growing up. -Mmm-hmm.

But this baby growing up, too.

-Ah. -How did your audition go?

It went very, very well.

-Did it? -[Darian] It did. Yeah, it did.

Even though I applied for NYU's singing program,

I really don't know what I would wanna do if I get accepted.

I hate the idea of being so far from my family,

especially with GG fighting cancer.

I'm just... I have so many worries.

If you get in, are you gonna go?

GG, I don't know, to be honest.

Like, you already know what I wanna do.

I mean, yeah, I wanna pursue music.

-[GG] Yeah. -But I just don't know where I wanna do it.

Okay.

Well, I think it would be a good experience.

But, I mean, one of the first things of becoming an adult

is when you make your decisions,

just know why you're makin' 'em...

-Mmm-hmm. -...and be comfortable with doing so.

You know, in regards to Derrick and Karen,

I don't want nobody to think that I'm trying to

interfere with their decision for their children.

But with Darian, college, I think would teach her

more about how to get along in life on her own.

And the grandbabies are watching her,

so it would be setting the pace for the rest of 'em.

And that's what I believe.

That thing actually has been around for centuries,

and it's primarily done in historically Black universities.

To be a stepper, you have to have rhythm.

I was a part of a step team when I was in high school,

and I love how we made music and rhythm

with the sound of our feet.

It kind of made me feel like church, a little bit,

because of how in sync we were.

It's a lot going on with the move and all,

but if I found y'all a class, would y'all wanna do it?

-[both laugh] I do. -Oh, look like everybody want to take some classes, okay.

The new house is a clean slate for me and my family of 16,

but it is very easy for a family our size

to collect a large amount of junk.

And I don't wanna bring anything other than what's needed.

So, the family went through items for things to donate.

The beauty of having a house full of preteens and teenagers

is I get to funnel all that energy into a project like this.

And when I was a teenager, my mother kept my butt busy

-Is she okay? -I'm sure she good.

GG recently stopped doing her chemo,

so I don't know what to think.

But it was definitely a sound

-of a person in distress. -[phone dialing]

[answering machine playing] Hi, you've reached G,

-leave a message at the sound of the tone. Thank you. -Oh, my God.

I call her, and I keep calling her, and she doesn't answer.

It's totally not like GG to not answer my call, and that scares me.

I'm just envisioning what must be going on

for her to have abruptly hung up on me like she did.

Ma, Ma, what's going on?

-[GG] What? -Ma, you scared the mess out of me, out of us.

-I kept calling your phone. Where's your phone? -Oh.

In the bedroom. I just, I had a moment.

Ma, you have no idea,

-the fear that you sent over to me, over us. -[GG] Oh, I'm sorry.

I'm dumbfounded.

While I'm on the phone with her,

she let out this distressed cry.

Obviously, I'm grateful that she's okay.

But my adrenaline is still up to here,

so it's taking a minute for me to come down from that.

I am thankful to God that you're okay.

my baby.

I'm sorry.

-You okay? -Yeah.

I'm sorry to see my child worried and upset about me,

and to see him break down like that,

oh, that's heart-wrenchin' for me.

I don't like to see that.

Which is why some things,

I don't even wanna tell him.

So, what was it?

I just had a pain.

And the pain was so excruciatin',

I couldn't talk no more.

But you know, luckily, the longer I'm off the chemo, the less it happens.

I really think it's time that we tell the children

that you're weaning yourself off of chemo.

You're probably right, but I know

that's gonna be a hard conversation.

I think that the way you tell them

to keep them from "losing it," so to speak...

-Right. -...that you've decided to wean yourself off of chemo...

-Yeah. -...and it seems to be doing pretty good,

but it is a process.

Yeah, and I need to let them know that, um,

just because I'm stopping the chemo,

I am by no means givin' up.

[emphatically] Cancer will not take me out.

Amen.

I have struggled with GG's decision to stop chemo,

but it's also very important that we show transparency

amongst us as family,

so the children know that when GG has pain

not to be scared, it's a part of the process.

But we just don't know how they're going to react.

One teardrop,

it's over.

No, because I'm thinking of... [sniffles]

...the fear as a little kid for me.

[Deon] Yeah.

Mmm-hmm.

[GG sniffling]

And it tears me up.

I know Derrick is right. We've gotta tell the kids.

I just hope and I pray there won't be no tears,

'cause them tears, they break my heart.

I don't want the kids worrying about me.

[Deon] So, you think you'll be able to talk to them soon?

We have a new house and we need to furnish it.

We only have a month left before we have to be at our current house.

So, between renovations at the new house,

paint up and down stairs,

I just don't know how we're gonna do it.

Oh, yeah, there's furniture all up here.

We really need to replace a lot of the children's furniture,

you know, most are built-ins,

and the other half they've outgrown.

But my goal is to find furniture that is inexpensive, you know?

So, my contractor quoted me a price of $2,500

to do built-in desks,

but I'm still waiting for the prices to come in for the built-in bunk beds.

I am determined to do what makes the best financial sense.

That would be here at this furniture store.

I haven't been sharing all the budget information with Karen,

because I simply don't wanna stress her out any more than she already is.

But we can't buy the first item she lays her eyes on

without making sure it's the best economical option for us.

I know we are both stressed out,

but there are so many items on our checklist,

So now we're slowly moving boxes into the new house

and checking out the progress that has been made.

[Karen] Next time we do this, we need a trolley.

with our prospective tenant.

We just keep getting further and further behind.

I already had to move the new tenants back an entire month.

But now it looks like I'm gonna have to delay

their moving date again.

And I doubt they'll stick around at this point.

That means I'm gonna be stuck paying two mortgages even longer,

which is really gonna drain my budget.

Is it a crew or just one person?

It's just one person, my main guy.

I love his quality.

And I get the best prices from him

because he's worked with me for so many years.

By your own words,

he got a whole lot of stuff to do,

and he's already behind on that.

And then now you want him to make bunk beds.

And desk.

You have no idea what his reason for being delayed is.

We could have that same problem with the furniture store.

If they call you and say, "Oh, we're sorry, we thought that was in.

That won't be until another month."

The difference is we can go to another furniture store.

[Deon] Most couples have issues.

No matter how strong their relationship is, they still have issues.

And Karen and I have had, you know, challenges before,

you know, and it was trying on us,

but we dealt with it. So having said that,

where we are right now, I-I hate it.

I don't like this bickering because it doesn't get us anywhere.

...let's just call a truce with each other.

We already got some other things

that we gotta sort through that got us stressed,

you know, with Darian, college.

We owe it to ourselves, and more than anything,

we owe it to our children to...

be on the same page.

You know, being married for 18 years

and having all of our children,

we've been through a lot, but this seems like it's just extra challenging.

Because it's so many different things

that we just haven't been able to agree on lately.

of going to college.

the cancer diagnosis.

At one point, it did make the tumor and GG shrink,

but it just makes me feel horrible.

My objective is to be here and feel good.

to stop doing my chemotherapy.

I decided to stop doing my chemotherapy.

And doing that,

sometimes I run into a little pain,

and that's what y'all experienced

when y'all heard me the other day.

the natural regimen that I'm on

is really making me feel better.

So I just wanted to let y'all know

don't get scared.

That's just the process,

in order to heal.
