that hormonal stage of feeling themselves and liking girls.

[Karen] Now, our younger children, they get the dancing bug

So, what we decided to do was sign 'em up for tap class later on this week.

So we have all these growing children

in one small house.

Yes, we've been in this small house for over five years now,

and it's causing more and more tension between Karen and I.

But I'm sitting on a huge surprise

that will absolutely solve all of our problems.

Let's just say it will make her very happy,

unless it ain't handled right.

We have a couple of little challenges.

It's too small. The babies are getting bigger.

[Deon] And we don't have the house that we want yet,

Last year I was adopted into the family.

I would never imagine it was gonna be so emotional for me...

So, I love being a big brother to all of the children.

We have our health.

We're all in one room.

Our baby girl is about to go away to college locally.

Darian, the oldest one.

Do you realize she's the first person in my family,

to go to college.

I think it's very important for Darian to go to college.

She will be the first person in our immediate family to get a degree.

And I think it's very important that black women

seek a higher education for purposes of being at those men tables.

And I think it's also great for our younger children to witness that.

Right, Darian? You're trying to go to college locally, right?

I mean, I'm looking at some.

We have two nice colleges here.

I mean, really nice.

-Um... -[Deon] Okay, so is it California?

And you're looking at California?

That would still be an adjustment for me, to be honest.

[Karen] I tend to look at this differently.

[Deon] You want her to go off?

Yeah, because I know what it was like for me

becoming a flight attendant.

And I was away.

It was everything for me.

The diversity, the learning different cultures.

All of that did something for me.

I admire you

for being the kind of mother and parent

that you could support her going away.

That's just not me. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

But technically, it really is up to you.

You don't have to listen to Mommy or Papi.

[Deon] Someone's not gonna be satisfied.

I know that.

I just started thinking about going to college,

and I liked the idea of going out of state.

But I also feel pulled to stay local.

This is all I've ever known, and I would miss my family way too much.

GG lives about 15 minutes, give or take from where I live.

And I've always been active in my mother's life.

But now in, you know, her more mature years.

I've taken on an even bigger responsibility,

[Deon] It's been two years since GG started chemo battling the lung cancer.

And treatment has gone well. Thank God.

So today, I'm taking her to her follow up appointment

just to see how this last round of chemo went.

[Deon] No, we're just talking about Darian going to the local college.

-What? -[Deon] Just talking. Um...

She's already chosen then?

Well, just... I know it's gonna be local.

But I thought maybe it was her decision.

I hope nobody is trying to pressure her,

'cause if somebody tries to get in her way,

they better watch out.

-I'll tai-chi 'em. -[Karen] Exactly.

-[chuckles] -Darian wants to please her parents,

but those two, both have their own thoughts

on what she should be doing.

So, Darian needs to channel her ener-GG,

and make her own decisions.

-[Deon] All right, you ready? -[GG] I'm ready.

GG had a CAT scan done a couple of days ago,

so we're here to get the results

and discuss her future treatment options.

How you've been doing?

I've been doing really good.

[Dr. Parikh] Okay, been feeling better?

[GG] I have.

You have this little break from chemo

-for like a month and a half. -Yes.

So what am I looking like?

You had a picture done for me a couple days ago.

-I did? -Yeah.

So that picture looked better.

Nothing new, nothing grew and it's smaller.

-[Deon] That's a win. -[gasps and laughs]

[GG] Thank you, Jesus. [exhales]

-[Deon] That's a win. -Oh, I receive it.

Oh, wow, the relief that I feel.

Nothing grew, nothing new and it's shrunk...

That's good news. Right?

-Yes. -Yeah, it's not gone.

So decisions now going forward is,

do we modify the treatment

to lower doses more weeks apart,

Is it worth what it's buying you in terms of time

versus the quality of life, right?

That's the decision we have to make, right?

So that's your decision, right?

GG always struggles with chemo treatments

because of the way it makes her feel.

And Dr. Parikh is very aware of this

so he's offered her less treatment.

Which is less dosage and we get chance

to keep battling this damn cancer.

So what if I still choose to just go natural

and then I'm given a scan and hypothetically,

things maybe did not get better.

We'd keep watching it.

-Yeah. -Okay. Yep, that is an option.

The flip side. If you get worse,

if it spreads somewhere else and you get weaker,

you may not be strong enough to take more chemo.

Oh.

[Dr. Parikh] Chemo works better when people are healthier

You're probably in the best shape I've seen you in

in two years, alright?

so you have a difficult choice coming up

in what you want to do.

Dr. Parikh is basically saying

that if my mother does not continue with chemo

and she stops, there's a possibility

that she may hit a wall of a point of no return.

That's been one of my greatest fears.

I still want to try my natural.

-I just still... -Okay, that's fair.

I want to try it and I want to stop the treatment.

Are you okay with what she just said?

[Deon] I am not okay with it.

-I would not stop anything that got us here. -Yeah.

That would be my recommendation.

It's hard right now for me to see her side of things.

I just don't see it.

But I'm not winning this argument

and I do want to respect her decision and her choices

for her life.

However, if things change health-wise,

that's a whole other ballgame.

There's some talk.

[Dr. Parikh] Remember, it's her choice.

I don't know how much longer I can maintain this secret.

trying the chemo in conjunction with your natural?

[GG] Derrick is such a wonderful son.

I really don't know what I would have done without him.

But what I need for my family right now

is positivity and understanding.

And I don't want him to worry.

Derrick, the chemo has gotten me to this point.

But now I'm ready to try something else.

If it's stopped, then I think of something else.

Maybe it'll be the chemo again.

But, Ma, what if it's too late?

-I think that's my bigger issue. -Well, hey.

If it's too late, it wasn't meant for me.

Ma, that's not even fair.

It's fair to me.

The way the chemo makes you feel

is a short-term thing for the overall goal.

Here's the deal.

What's short-term for you is an eternity for me.

That is what I don't really think you understand.

And during those times,

I actually feel like I'm gonna die.

I trust in what I'm doing.

I really do.

[Deon] Yeah, I don't understand it.

And it's a hard position for me

because I just want to feel like I've exhausted

every single thing, no matter which way you go.

Well, consider yourself exhausted.

Because at the end of the day, this is my life.

It's my health.

It's my journey.

I don't like it, but the way you put that,

I think we need to keep fighting this

my job is making sure we have enough of everything

for 18 people. That's a lot of people.

First of all, aliens are real.

I want to think that I'm ready.

This is a part of our moving.

Our journey to find a new house has been an uphill battle.

It's like I've gotten my hopes up so many times

to only just be let down.

I've been trying to secure this one particular house for us for some time now,

I want that house to look like it's brand spanking new.

because Lord only knows how she's gonna react.

So, while Derrico is hoarding doomsday products

for the upcoming alien invasion,

he did not get anything practical for the kitchen.

So today, we all are gonna go to the grocery store

so I can teach him how to stay focused on the grocery list.

With a family of 16,

it is important that we have a buddy system.

-[Karen] Mm-hmm. -So, we have our older children

responsible for taking care of the younger ones,

and that no child gets left behind.

[Karen] How many shopping carts do I think we're gonna need?

-Forty. -[Karen] Me and the girls will take two,

you and the boys, take two.

The difference between the average family and my family

going grocery shopping is the budget is a lot bigger.

[Deon] We go through an excessive amount of product daily.

So what do we need? A big bag of rice...

[Denver] We're out of noodles.

We're buying in bulk all the time.

[employee] How many kids do you have?

We have to buy things in multiples.

[Deon] You know, they're addicted to the noodles. Really?

Yeah, y'all don't have any room for real food.

A lot of people, they're like, "Oh, you're having a birthday party?"

We're like, "No, this right here is dinner."

You would think that as your children get older,

things that you do becomes easier.

Not with our family's size.

[Karen] We've only recently started taking the triplets to the store

now that they're walking all about and stuff,

and their little selves got the nerve to have desires and wants.

And when they say, "Oh, I want that,"

you can't just look at them and say, "Oh, no, we got that at home."

No, we don't.

[Deon] Man, they're stocking up on goodies.

[Eric] Yeah, we're gonna starve, or get diabetes.

-We went to grocery store. -Yeah, that was fun. There was so many grocery.

Of our eight boys,

five of them are either starting puberty

They have so many questions,

-How do you sleep at night knowing you charging this? -[laughing]

Yeah, our children burned off energy

while also burning off our money.

My God, this is a lot of groceries. Watch where you're going.

[Karen] Oh, it better last us for a month, with all of them.

[Deon] Girl, a month?

-We'd be lucky if we get by a week. -[Karen snickers]

Just looking at colleges.

Oh, what you wanna take is what?

Music what, which is like vocal performance or film and television.

I did a summer program at NYU for dramatic writing in television and film,

and it was amazing being on my own

and getting a taste of what adulthood would be like.

I loved it.

And they have a vocal performance program that looks incredible,

but if I apply, it would mean going to New York and auditioning.

So, I'm just kinda looking at their curriculums and just weighing my options.

I just go back and forth a lot.

Like, do I wanna stay here, or do I wanna go far.

Does Papi know you're looking at schools on East Coast?

No, I know how Papi is about, you know, being close to your family.

It's gonna probably be hard for him.

I understand how Papi feels,

but I also get Mommy's point, too.

Because this is a chance to really explore who is Darian

when she's not around her family.

It's just a lot that I have to think about.

Just because you're 18,

that don't mean you have all the answers.

-Mm-hmm. -[GG] You know, I didn't have the opportunity

to go to college.

I didn't even finish high school.

But I would love, love to be able to relive my life

and be faced with some of these opportunities you're faced with.

-Mm-hmm. -[GG] Oh, yeah.

Back when I was growing up, black women didn't have a lot of opportunities.

But if I had have had the opportunity at 18,

I would have told my 18-year-old self,

"You better seize the moment, baby."

I would have did more with my life.

I know Deon doesn't want his little girl to go away

if it's not what she really wants.

But if it's what she really wants,

they need to step aside and let her do her thing.

Darian, you would be the first one in this family to get a college degree.

That is just wonderful.

But ultimately, I want for you what you want for you.

[Darian] I feel pressured to make the right decision

when it comes to college.

I don't wanna disappoint anyone,

but at the same time, I have to do what's right for me.

And right now, I don't even know what that is.

You guys are really good at this dance stuff.

I think that the children are having an amazing time.

There's a couple of them,

[Karen] Can you believe that you were once all of their ages?

And now you're out here looking at different colleges.

[chuckles]

Because Darian was our only child for four-and-a-half years,

we have that bond.

I've been her biggest cheerleader since the day she was born.

So now that she's grown, I want her to go out

and have her own adventures, just like I did.

I'm for going away.

I just don't really see you being around here in Vegas.

It's like, why can't I just multiply myself

and do everything that Darian wants to do?

Like, why can't one Darien stay here,

and then one Darian going to New York,

and then one Darien explore the world,

then one Darien and do this and that and that.

That's... that's part of growing up, making a decision.

because I know what it did for me.

I was from a small town,

I had never been around so many different cultures,

and I wasn't just living in this bubble.

When I moved away from home, I was 18 as well.

I became a flight attendant,

and I wouldn't be where I am right now without that.

It really and truly opens up your mind.

So I really want her to have that experience.

The fact that you know what you wanna do,

you know you want to say, that's a big, huge step.

You know, so you just... you just go for it.

Go to a school that gives you the talent and experience to help you explore that.

So just go ahead and apply.

There's no harm in you exploring all of your options.

Yeah, I guess so.

And I'm constantly wondering what else is going to go wrong.

I mean, you know, it's not the end of the world.

I know Karen is super frustrated with this situation.

But this house is a disaster zone.

It's just not ready for her to see it.

I just need her to hang on a little longer.

I just feel as though anything that I ask for, nothing is done now.

I'm tired of waiting.

but the difference is I didn't have 14 children

it just feels like the walls are, like, closing in.

I definitely feel like I'm suffocating.

To see my wife go through this, it is time up.

You can't do it any more at this house.

The house is too small.

You know, it's a gut punch because I have a solution.

I just can't tell her I have a house.

it's almost like I'm presenting her with another problem.

I don't like feeling like I'm defeated.

I feel like things that I've been working toward,

that it'd definitely be in a bigger house.

It's the fact that it's happening back to back,

I'm just mentally drained.

Life keeps going on. The children are growing up,

and yet, I feel stuck. You know, like stuck in this same small house

year after year.

I don't wanna feel hopeless, but I can't help it.

God, I've been through too much to have to keep waiting.

That's how I feel.

I'm just tired of it.

I have kept this house a secret

because it's just not finished.

But talking to her right now, she's clearly distraught,

and my fear is am I doing more harm

than good by allowing her to go down

this emotional roller coaster without an end in sight.

That's the biggest problem.

Just seeing you, watching you express yourself like this...

but I also know when a person is where she is...

they have to be given a lifeline.

I feel like the lifeline right now is to tell her about this house

and change her whole mental perspective.

She needs that glimmer of hope,

and she needs it right now.

We'll just pretend like this was our first date.

-and didn't know where we were going anyway. [laughs] -[Deon] Yeah.

This is a gamble.

because there's quite a bit of work that needs to be done.

we need carpeting. The list goes on and on.

So it could definitely add a great deal of stress.

And I don't want to put her in a situation

where she's even more stressed out than she is right now.

Karen, I need you to cover your eyes.

I have already sunk a lot of time and money

into this house without her knowing.

So I'm hoping that Karen will be able

to see beyond the mess, see beyond the construction, and see the potential.
