...Patricia loves to shine it on superstars in her own life.

I love Liz so much. She's one of the most incredible people.

[Drew] Liz has not only been a friend to Patricia

and her family for almost 30 years,

but after Patricia's mom passed away,

Liz became like a mother to her.

She's just a really incredible woman.

[Drew] Liz has a zest for life.

And even now in her 80s,

Liz loves her home and her independence.

[Patricia] She loves plants, she loves flowers,

and she's an incredible cook.

She wants to do her own thing, not be a burden on anyone.

[Drew] But her kitchen and laundry room

aren't set up to give her that freedom.

Do you think that Liz could ever get anything out of

-a lot of these cabinets? -[Patricia] No!

I feel like in our culture we don't really celebrate our elders.

We don't make safe spaces for them.

[yells]

[Drew] So Patricia's going all in...

[Drew] Nice!

...to create a Liz-inspired...

If we can create something that gives her a bit of an homage

to Venezuela and what she loves...

...age-in-place suite...

The counters are almost two inches lower to make it more convenient for her.

...to honor an amazing woman...

[Liz] Oh, my God, Patricia.

She is definitely an icon.

I love the range of what she can do.

She can play the darkest of characters.

Like something really scary.

Like True Romance.

And then she can be this fun-loving comedic character.

[Drew] She's won 53 awards and been nominated 78 times.

An Oscar, Emmys, Golden Globes.

I don't think she's won a Grammy.

-You know? -Give her time.

-Give her some time. -Exactly, what can't she do?

[Jonathan] Yup. We'll be there soon.

[Jonathan] She said just come right in the front.

-[Patricia] Hey. -Hey!

-What's happening? -I'm so stoked!

-How you doing? -Oh, my God, I'm so thrilled.

-Oh, they're here. -Hey, wait! What are you doing?

-You doing the dishes? -You know what? I never stop working.

You're probably the busiest actor in Hollywood.

Nonstop! Go, go, go!

And when you're not working, you're helping other people clean their dishes.

But you are helping so many people, and I love Liz so much.

I'm so grateful that you're doing this.

She's one of the most incredible people.

My mom and Liz were good friends.

And then when my mom was passing away from cancer,

I was living at my mom's house to take care of her.

And Liz would come by every day and check on me and check on my mom

and we'd sit in the garden and talk.

And then, when my mom passed away,

and I got pregnant with my daughter,

she really stepped in and became like

a surrogate grandmother to my daughter.

And that was so beautiful

because I was really missing my mom

and missing that

grandparent-type of wisdom and love that they give.

My daughter calls her Abuela Liz.

Liz lived in South America and she started a school.

And she helped all these children

and all of these single moms

that she's helped raise their kids

and helped teach kids with special needs.

I think there's many, many, many kids that call her Abuela Liz.

It's really such a treasure to have someone in your life

that can share with you their wisdom

when you're having difficult moments in your life,

when you're at a crossroads.

She's just a really incredible woman and so independent.

She loves to create beautiful meals for people around

and deliver them to people when they're sick.

It's very much a part of who she is

as a person, as a nurturer.

And it's really a dream come true

to be able to give back to her

and honor her wishes of how she wants to live her life.

To make it as easy and beautiful for her as possible.

This is such a beautiful thing.

I can't wait to meet her.

She sounds like the most amazing person

and she's given everything to everyone else,

and I feel like she's someone

who would never ask for any of this for herself.

So for you to come in here and do this for her is pretty amazing.

She's just a treasure of a human being, and I love her so much.

Liz is fiercely independent.

She wants to do her own thing.

Not be a burden on anyone.

You've got to respect that to give her this space

and have it much more accessible for her

so she can be in her own home, in her own power.

That's such a beautiful thing to be a part of.

I'm just so grateful you guys are doing this for her.

I feel like you're already wearing the pants.

So tell us about Liz and what you're thinking.

[Patricia] Liz loves to cook, and she's an incredible cook.

And at the end of this, we got to come back

and have her cook an incredible Indian dinner.

Yes, please.

So the functionality, maybe this is a little,

you know, high for her.

Having a space designed for somebody with mobility issues

or somebody who's getting a little older in age,

there are very different solutions.

Think about this.

Do you think that Liz could ever get anything out of a lot of

-a lot of these cabinets? -No!

[Patricia] She's not the tallest person on earth.

To get into those cabinets is impossible.

This washer and drier in this area over here.

To have laundry that's easy for her to pull out,

to put her hamper up so she doesn't have to stoop over.

She likes to do all these things for herself.

Yikes.

There's a illegal, illegal electrical work done here.

You can't have a panel set up like that.

-We want to check that out, too. -All right.

Yeah. I mean, obviously,

we want everything to look nice,

but we want everything to be safe as well.

Does she not use a dishwasher?

She doesn't have a dishwasher, yeah.

-I don't know what happened-- -[Drew] Yeah, we can...

I mean, that's the thing. Whatever she needs for function, we can add it.

-That's so great. -[Jonathan] Is this what you're feeling then?

The main focus for her would be kitchen,

this eating area and laundry?

[Patricia] That would be great, yeah.

Like these drawers are just kind of falling off.

And these things are sagging.

You mentioned countertop height.

-Yeah-- -We can actually install the counters lower.

[Patricia] Yeah, it would be great.

[Jonathan] Everything here could be redone

so that it works better for someone

who doesn't quite have the mobility they may have had years ago.

We want to give her a kitchen that actually works for her.

We could even have some pull down shelves

from the upper shelves so that she can actually

bring them down to a height she can reach.

[Patricia sighs] That'd be incredible.

I think it'll be nice to give Liz a little bit of her freedom back.

The house right now is fighting her.

And it shouldn't.

She wants to be independent.

You know, she's like,

"You know, baby.

"No, no. I don't want everyone taking care of me."

You know? She's a matriarch.

And even thinking of our parents too,

I know they like to be in their space.

[Drew] Well, if you've been a strong, independent person your whole life,

nothing is worse than being told,

no, you now have to move into a home

or somewhere where you're taken care of

by somebody else and not feel independent.

And I feel like in our culture,

we don't really celebrate our elders.

We don't make safe spaces for them.

This is, I think, just a more beautiful way

to provide her with some ease.

There are a couple of dead zones over here,

some of it naturally, I think, could be storage.

-[Patricia] Mm-hmm. -But she's got a dining table.

Would she need the eating kitchen,

or what would you say she would choose?

I think it would be nice if she could...

She loves plants,

she loves flowers, she loves growing things.

If there would be some kind of way to incorporate that

and also a place where she could watch the news.

She's very political.

She's very invested in the world and community and what's happening.

There's definitely a way to do that.

[Drew] And I'm sure you probably know some of Liz's style.

We want to make sure it's her style.

Does she like color, or does she love certain materials?

[Patricia] She loves her decor and she's very organized.

And also, she loves art.

You know, she's an artistic person.

She's chic.

I think if we consider shelling this, take it all out,

put in some beautiful stone,

put in brand new appliances, even though it's small,

we could make this the chicest kitchen ever.

[Patricia] That'll be great.

[Jonathan] A space that celebrates Liz's love

of cooking and color is what we want.

So we'll start down low

with beautiful honed marble flooring,

elegant to the eye, but durable.

Then we'll create age-in-place accessibility throughout,

starting with reduced-height cabinets for easier reach,

a counter-mounted pot filler at the range

and custom pull-out spice jar racks.

Style will add to function with sophisticated quartz countertops

and matching backsplash.

We'll span an entire wall with custom pantry cabinets and open shelves

to display collectibles from Liz's travels,

as well as a mounted TV,

so she can stay informed and entertained

as she dines at her cozy new breakfast table

that will feature a chic indoor garden for her beloved plants.

Finally, we'll make the laundry room brighter with custom cabinets

and the laundry chore easier

with a handy-height frontload washer and dryer,

and custom pull-outs for Liz's laundry baskets.

How long do you think Liz will have to be out of here?

Probably about a month.

-What? How long? -A month?

Okay, so here's the problem.

She's staying with friends and family for three weeks.

-Okay. -Oh, she's out of town?

Yeah, and she doesn't know.

This is, you know, doable.

-Yeah, I think... It's a small kitchen. -Three weeks.

We're not really moving plumbing.

Let's just kick it up a notch.

Unless we come across, like, crazy structural or like the electrical,

-there's definitely-- -Ye of little faith. Come on!

-All right. -Are you strong?

Stronger than a bull.

[laughs]

-Oh, whoa! -Oh, man!

-She actually beat him there! -[laughing]

[vocalizes upbeat music]

Let's move all of that might and strength into demolishing this kitchen.

-Let's do it. -So we'll clear everything out

and then we can come back maybe tomorrow

and start to rip this apart.

-Yeah, I can't wait. -This is gonna be so good.

-[Jonathan] Exciting. -Whoo-hoo!

She's gonna love it and it's gonna feel like her

and she'll be in her space, and it will change her life.

[upbeat music playing]

[Patricia] You guys have belts. I don't have anything.

-You want the belt? -I do. I mean--

-All right. -[Patricia] I need my props.

-Yep. -Okay, here we go.

[Jonathan] Now you look like a real pro.

It's like on the very last rung.

I don't know what that says about me.

I guess I am, like, 100 pounds more than she is.

-Hey, get away! -Watch your fingers.

-I'm gonna back up. -Mazel tov!

-[Drew] Oh, wow. -[Jonathan] One more.

-Amazing. -Yeah!

-Kick it. -[Patricia] I love demo.

I have done some demo before.

[Jonathan] Nice!

And I think it's a really great way to get out aggression.

Well done. I don't think we're needed here, Jonathan.

Why don't you boys go have a iced tea?

I'm gonna hit this thing.

-Oh, my gosh. -My gosh.

You don't waste any time.

I love transformation.

Taking something apart that no longer works...

and building something that will work better in your life

is so powerful.

We're making quite short work of this.

Oh! The kid's got it.

Why is it literally everything you're hitting is a one hit? I don't get it.

I'm a one-hit wonder, baby. What can I say?

[Drew] I'm pretty sure you're more than a one-hit wonder.

-Good job. -[Drew and Jonathan] Nice.

Okay. And then, here we go.

[Patricia] Wow, guys!

[Drew] I love that Patricia just pulls

whatever inspiration from whatever characters

and she basically, like, one-kicks and one-hammers this kitchen.

It's crumbling under our death grips.

-What is happening here? -Sorry.

What did I ever do to you?

-[Jonathan] Hey. Hey, you guys. -[Drew] Yo.

We have craziness here.

This was not done by a professional.

I'm literally just touching the circuit,

-that's short circuiting. -That's scary.

In this house, the meter is up above the panel,

and you can see exposed wires coming down to the panel.

Totally illegal.

It actually looks like, I don't know what's preventing it,

but it looks like the panel door could be electrified

-because it's-- -Oh, my God!

The actual wire has ruptured through.

So if Liz came by here at some point

and just touched or even came close to this,

it could zap her.

Oh, my God, that's really scary.

Uh, aside from the electrical, another issue,

there are ants all over here,

so there's definitely an infestation.

I bet you it's inside, underneath.

Yeah. I bet you they're living within the cabinet.

[Drew] Yeah. Look at that.

[Patricia] Whoa! I didn't even know they could live in the grout.

-Yeah. Yeah. -What do you do?

If we bring in an exterminator we can use natural products.

So we're not using chemicals.

I mean, we need to fix this.

That's why sometimes it's better to just tear it all out.

[Drew] Yeah, we'll take care of this.

The electrical system is dangerous.

The ants, it's not healthy, it's not safe for her.

So it'll be really nice for her

to just have this very clean, beautiful, safe space.

-[Drew] Nice. -[Patricia] Yeah.

Yeah!

[upbeat music playing]

[Drew] Before we could rip this place down to the studs,

I called in a few favors

and had exterminators in and out of here in one day.

So with no more unwanted guests,

we're picking up the pace to get this space cleared

and get the schedule back on track.

[Jonathan] Make no mistake. This is a small place,

but this is no easy task to get it done in three weeks,

since there are so many issues to address.

There's a ton of lath and plaster we need to rip out.

The floors need to be leveled.

Basically, we are maximizing every square foot of space in here

to make sure it's accessible for Liz to age in place.

But the electrical panel is a bit of a problem,

and we need to figure that out

to see if there's a major issue that could delay us.

So while our electrician figures out

exactly what we need to do

with the panel and the wiring...

Okay...

...Patricia and I are retreating to Liz's garden.

-I feel like we're having a little picnic back here. -Whoo-hoo!

Instead of lemonade and the sandwiches

I brought tile samples, palettes.

Ooh, yeah. Let's see what you got.

Even more enjoyable.

[Patricia] Ooh, I like this palette already.

You have mentioned several times

how worldly a traveler Liz is,

and that she also is like a very elegant woman.

I feel like the kitchen has to represent that.

-I agree. -Nothing boring, something with color.

No. She grew up wearing these beautiful saris of different colors,

you know, bringing her culture on her body.

Liz is not a cookie-cutter person.

She doesn't, like, fit into that mold.

And she's not swayed by what's popular right now

or what's trendy or anything.

This kind of palette, of these kind of warm, earthy colors,

I think really feels very Liz to me.

Oh, nice. So you lean into this a little more

-than, you know, something that's a bit too bright? -Yeah.

-Would you want to have wood tones incorporated-- -Definitely.

Because there's something very earthy about Liz and very natural.

I think also, in a space,

I think you can really bring out somebody's personality.

Imagine the cabinets in this burgundy color range,

and then you can see if we--

That's really sexy and gorgeous.

What would you think about stone with that?

You know, usually kitchens from, like the '20s and the '30s,

they had these ledges on either side of the range.

You can see, actually, here, I did kind of a drawing.

-Mm-hmm. -We could kind of, like, mimic that.

I like that you're bringing that historical back in.

There's those beautiful touches that people used to take,

and she's like that.

Liz comes from an era where there was way more attention to detail,

like handcrafted mill work and natural stone.

So using these materials also respects the age of her 1920s home.

Would you want to then lighten it up

or keep it a little bit dark and moody?

There's something nice about the light stone.

I think I would lean this way as well

-'cause it isn't a huge space. -Yeah.

So allowing the light to bounce around a little bit more would be good.

You can start to see our palette kind of come together here.

[Patricia] This paint that's very natural,

not super shiny, not super modern

for someone who is an original like Liz,

it's much more in keeping.

[Jonathan] I think we can introduce some pattern on the floor.

I was thinking of maybe doing limestone

with a little bit of a marble detail

and then sort of alternating it.

So here's my concern about this.

This feels very hard, and I'm feeling like

if she loses any of her balance or anything,

I'm really worried about her falling and breaking bones

-or hitting her head or... -Okay.

As we get older, balance becomes an issue sometimes.

So let's just kind of try to problem solve for things in the future.

And even actually, if you drop, you know,

a jar or something like that,

-if you drop right onto solid tile, it will shatter. -Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Whereas if you drop onto hardwood

or, like, a luxury vinyl or something like that,

usually it won't shatter.

We want something that's durable,

so we're gonna try and source something

that has the same beautiful aesthetic,

but something that's maybe a little softer.

When it comes to some of our fabrics and stuff, too,

I think once we kind of pull things together,

we can decide what direction we want to go.

We could do something that's just like a really nice creamy neutral.

[Patricia] It feels like earth, almost, like, in earth palettes.

Many of these things, in the wood.

-Is this too dark? -No.

But I was really happy about the kind of texture that he came to the table with

that I felt like he really understood and was honoring Liz.

-I feel like you've really captured Liz here. -Amazing.

[upbeat music playing]

[Drew] Time is tight,

so our team isn't wasting a single second.

Plumbing lines are being updated for the new sink and laundry room,

while the framers have sealed off all the points of entry for pests.

But more importantly, our electrician said he has great news.

We can relocate and upgrade the panel

and pass inspection within our extremely tight three-week schedule.

So with the new panel in place,

the electricians are busy outside

relocating the service from the city to the house.

Back inside, the insulation and drywall can get started.

And since we have to maximize efficiency with our tight timeline...

Okay, that should be good.

-Have you ever done routering before? -No, I never have.

...Patricia and I are doing a little mill work out back

to add a little bit of chic character to the space.

Go forward, yeah.

We have this beautiful cladding detail.

It's custom that we're doing up on the wall,

and Patricia is full hands-on getting this done.

The magic.

You got it.

[Patricia] I love to make things myself.

I love the history of craftsmanship,

and that adds some of the old-school quality

where, obviously, it's easier

to just go and buy stuff off the shelf.

But those little touches, I think,

make things so much more personal.

Perfect.

When Liz is in that kitchen,

she'll feel those personal little touches.

[blows air]

Any sort of wood cladding,

something low profile like this,

it's just adding a little bit more depth to the wall.

We'll also paint this out to match the cabinets

with that bold burgundy that you said she would love.

And by the way, over behind the range,

we're gonna have a slab backsplash with a little detail,

and then we'll have this up above that, too.

So will it be treated with something

so that if spaghetti sauce or oil splatters...

Absolutely. We'll have a sealant on it.

So any kind of splatter, you can wipe it off.

And that's also why we have the stone that comes up

the majority of the way behind.

Okay, great.

[Patricia] And I'm so grateful to be able to be a part

of making this happen for her.

This beautiful surprise.

When I go in there and we have tea,

I'll be able to look at that and say,

"Ooh, I was able to help with that."

-There we go. -Look at this.

-This is amazing. -In a matter of no time,

this kitchen is gonna have so much style.

Yeah.

[upbeat music playing]

[Drew] It's the beginning of week two already,

and with no room to slow down,

the flooring team was in at the crack of dawn

to get the hardwood installed

before the rest of the build team arrives.

Patricia made a great point

that tile would likely be too hard for Liz,

especially if she ever lost her balance.

So we chose a flooring with a little bit of give.

Engineered hardwood. It's the perfect solution.

Not only is it durable,

but it adds more of that earthy tone warmth

that Patricia says Liz will love.

And with the floors down,

you and I are tagging in to install some of our custom cabinets.

Ready for another cabinet?

Yeah, right. Let me just get this door on.

[Jonathan] As you get older,

your needs in a kitchen change.

-Is this in the middle? -Yeah.

And I think her needs are accessibility.

So we're gonna install a pot pillar right next to the range.

Definitely for somebody who's aging in place, we want to make sure that

they don't have to carry a heavy pot over to fill it up.

The accessibility for Liz in this kitchen is so much better.

Let's slide this in and see if it works with that guy.

Should we get all the way over here,

and then this is the one that do you line whole thing with.

[Drew exclaims]

Put a little filler between each cabinet.

It's so tricky, like, trying to get

as much storage as possible.

But I didn't want to have a real leg banger over here.

I think that's nice, though, because you still get...

Yeah, 33 inches of clearance.

-Yeah, it's good. -I think that's fine.

[groans] Okay, some drawers here.

-This will be the right one. -All right.

-See if we can slide it in. -So...

This is the...

[exclaims softly]

Oh, my gosh, I love that.

That's great.

I like that on the front, it's gonna look like multiple drawers,

like everything else, but it operates as one.

This is so much more functional.

This is what we have in our kitchen, too,

for spices or even for utensils.

And we won't paint that. We'll keep that the natural wood.

-And then we'll paint everything else. -Yeah.

You have more surprises.

Another one. This is for all the kitchen tools.

-We're cramming a lot into a small kitchen. -Yeah.

This is gonna have the right amount of storage. It's just her.

She wants it to be comfortable.

She wants to make life easy.

I like that this is as custom as it gets.

[grunts]

Everything was able to be just a little bit lower

more comfortable, which makes sense.

We've dropped the height of the counters down

so it's easier for Liz to access everything.

Normally, tall guys

wouldn't want to have

low counters like this.

-No. -But just that

couple of inch difference is gonna make life easier.

We're not lowering the cabinets to something

-that's unfunctional for anyone else. -Yeah, just that much.

There's a range where you can have your countertops.

We're just bringing it down two inches.

But I love the cutting board.

You pull here, you tuck it away.

Use the drawer. Oh, no, you need to cut something?

Let's get the cutting board out.

It's gonna blow Liz's mind.

And also, I know that Liz doesn't want to have a modern design.

She likes something that feels a little bit...

you know, there's a little bit of an old world to it.

There's something that has a little bit of an eclectic feel.

The color of the cabinets is key to achieving

that eclectic old world feel that we're after.

[Drew] Now, Patricia loved the idea of painting the cabinets burgundy,

but how dark we go with that burgundy is the real question mark.

-[Patricia] Hello! -Hey.

So I need her to sign off on what she thinks Liz will love best.

How are you? Wow, look at the vibrant color, and I love the shirt.

That's right.

This reminds me of where she loves textiles, her bright colors.

I love it. Well, we can get right into it.

So the big thing is the color for these cabinets.

We have three options in that burgundy feel.

A darker option, a mid tone,

and then here we have something a little bit lighter.

I like this mid tone, I think.

-I feel like the darker one would be too dark. -That?

I was feeling the same way.

I think that mid tone is really nice,

and it still brings out vibrance and fun that we know Liz would love.

I've seen a lot of pieces that she's collected.

You know, she lived in Venezuela and India and all over,

like some of the old rugs that she has

has that kind of tone in it,

of that mid range and I really like that.

Okay. This is a pretty bold color in the kitchen,

but the countertops, it'll actually tone it down a little bit

and just make it feel custom to her and beautiful.

And then we can find... we have floating shelves

that are wood floating shelves.

We can find a few other pieces to pop on the shelves.

Oh, that'd be great. I love floating shelves

and, you know, she loves pottery and she loves,

you know, different kinds of artisan things.

Okay, here's a question, since she doesn't travel as much anymore,

where would you say is one of her

absolute favorite places she's ever been?

Well, she talks a lot about her time in Venezuela

as a very happy time.

Maybe I can find someone who does pottery

and I can find some pieces

that feel like they're authentic to Venezuela.

Oh, that would be so great.

She would love that.

Like, supporting local artists

and their expression of life and love,

I think feels so much like Liz to me.

So yeah. What would you like for the pottery?

Any kind of a look?

You know she really loves her garden

and she loves gardening and flowers

and things like that,

so that could be really beautiful, I think.

Sure, yeah. We'll find a way to incorporate that.

If we can make these pieces look completely artisanal

and something that really speaks to her love of Venezuela,

I think she would love it.

I'm so, so, so excited. I want to see it!

[Jonathan] We're at the end of the second week

and thankfully, everything is right on track.

There were a few bumps along the way, like the electrical,

even the extermination, and that could have delayed us,

but we were able to sort those out quickly

and stay on schedule.

[Drew] The kitchen cabinets are installed.

We're just adding some final mill work details,

including this beadboard Patricia and I made by hand.

To be totally honest, Patricia pretty much did the whole thing.

I didn't really do much of it.

Are you even needed here anymore?

That's the thing. I don't know if I am.

[Jonathan] All right.

All right. A little to the right here.

[Jonathan] This will be the perfect nook for her TV

as well as a ton of storage.

And I think it's these little details

that are making the most out of Liz's tight space.

[Drew] And while our team is busy prepping the cabinets for paint,

we've got to finish up some work in that dark laundry room.

[Jonathan] Yeah.

What a difference not having all that safety hazard right here.

Almost half of the circuits in here were not wired properly.

This will all be gone. It's temporary.

Our new panel's right here.

Changing out the electrical panel,

getting rid of all of those issues,

this is going to be a house that's safe,

and she's not going to have all those flickering circuits anymore.

Knowing that Liz has cataracts,

you want as much light as possible,

so having all the natural light pouring in here,

it'll make it easier for her to function.

Oh, did I tell you that we've got the shelves for the upper cabinets?

They come all the way down.

Yes. Perfect. I know you were talking about that.

We also raised the washer-dryer up.

So they're gonna be right at her height.

Easy. She doesn't have to bend over at all.

So everything in here

is going to be clean and bright and easy.

Over the years, we've had to adapt our parents' home

just to make it safer and more functional for them.

So it was very important for us to make Liz's home not only beautiful,

but practical and extremely accessible.

[Drew] This is a tight squeeze.

[Jonathan] And these solutions will work for anybody

with mobility issues, young or old.

Or anyone who just wants to make

a small space like this work more efficiently.

This is called cabineting yourself into a corner.

All right, so Liz can't bend all the way down for a washer-dryer.

So this gives her nice height.

So this... This is my favorite part.

Just a drawer that comes out.

It's just a surface to put her basket on.

[Drew] I absolutely love this.

How cool is that?

From that platform surface to where the door swings out

is just enough room for a hamper.

-Okay. Perfect. -So that makes everything so easy.

Two drawers, twice the storage, two shelves.

This is a small spot.

So we wanna make sure it stays nice and light.

-Just white cabinets here are gonna be great. -Yeah.

[Drew] Painting these cabinets in place is gonna give them a seamless finish,

making them feel more like furniture

and really enhance the old world charm.

[Jonathan] In order to get the color Patricia chose perfect,

it's gonna take a coat of primer

and at least two coats of paint.

[Drew] And while we give that paint some time to dry,

I'm gonna go on a little field trip to find those artistic additions

that we know will make this space even more special for Liz.

Liz is this amazing, worldly traveler,

and she's always supported local artists no matter where she is.

And Patricia and I agree that some artwork for Liz

will personalize this space even more.

So I contacted a local artist here in LA.

-Hey. -Hey, you made it.

[Drew] How's it going?

Elizabeth is incredibly skilled with clay,

so I'd love her to craft something

that celebrates Liz and her new kitchen.

Patricia says that Liz absolutely loves Venezuela.

She lived there for 11 years,

and if we can create something

that gives her a bit of an homage to Venezuela and what she loves...

-[Elizabeth] Beautiful. -Yeah.

I did a little research

and discovered that Venezuela's national flower

is actually an orchid.

-Mm-hmm. -So we can figure out a way

of kind of intertwining these orchids into the plates.

Patricia literally just told me that Liz loves orchids,

so having some sort of floral as a part of the design would be really nice.

Originally, I was thinking maybe we could do like

eight plates or something like that.

So she has a bunch.

I don't know if she actually needs eight plates

because it is a small kitchen.

Why don't we do four plates

and we can do teacups and saucers.

And that would be really great for Liz in the morning.

Oh, my gosh, yeah, that would be great.

[Elizabeth] Grab that pansy one.

-[Drew] This one? -[Elizabeth] Exactly.

[Drew] Oh, that's adorable.

And they'll all kind of, like, line and stack together.

[Drew] Yeah.

And then this way she'll have,

whatever we decide, she'll have a full set,

a dinner plate, a saucer, and a cup.

At the end of the day, I want these to be functional plates that she can use.

And I actually really like the idea of creating a couple of tea sets.

-Can we do... I really like this. -Okay.

I think that there's a nice finish to this that she would love,

sort of the muted color tones.

But there's something, I don't know.

It just speaks to her heritage.

-I think she would love that. -I think so, too.

But can we do it in this size?

-Yeah, I'm gonna do a full dinner plate. -So let's do that.

We don't have a lot of time.

But Elizabeth has agreed

to create these plates and cups for us in only a few days

so that we'll have this displayed proudly in the new kitchen

when Liz walks in the door.

Yeah, so it has the orchids.

The floral has those pops of colors.

-And then four complementing tea cups. -Cup and saucer.

I think that'll be great.

I actually think that that's such a great idea.

I didn't even think about tea time.

[Elizabeth] Yeah, she'll love it.

[Drew] Everyone loves tea time.

I know she's antsy to get back home,

so I'm excited to get her back in there.

[Jonathan] Patricia went bold,

and I think it's gonna pay off here.

[Patricia] Hey, Liz. Are you ready?

I am-- [gasps]

Oh, my God, Patricia.

[upbeat music playing]

[Drew] We have three days left,

which means there is absolutely no downtime

if we're gonna get this renovation completed

before Liz returns home.

Nothing is more challenging

than having a room full of crew

and then trying to squeeze in a countertop install.

But that's what we have to do

just to get these gorgeous slabs in place.

[Jonathan] Liz is an incredible cook.

Her Indian meals are legendary,

so she needs a countertop that will work as hard as she does.

[Drew] This space has to function for Liz,

but we're also leaning into the home's history

with a nod to the golden age of Hollywood

by adding details like this gorgeous backsplash

that curves elegantly toward the vent hood.

And while the kitchen is bursting at the seams,

we have one final feature to paint.

This is beautiful.

-It's stunning. -Yeah, gorgeous.

A house like this. It's an older home.

You wanna make sure that it's got a classic feel

that's paying an homage to the era of the home.

This color is going to make it feel like that old Hollywood glam.

This is going to be a bold kitchen.

And I think with some of those elegant old-school features

like the hardware, the light fixtures,

that's gonna really make this look amazing.

[Patricia] Here, let me give this to you.

And these beautiful... Look.

Hey, didn't it turn out great?

They're incredible.

We have the cups, we have the tea saucers

and we have the full plates.

She's gonna love these colors and these flowers.

[Drew] Yeah, remind her of Venezuela.

[Patricia] It's all custom, and I think that's how Liz is.

This nod to Venezuela and orchids,

which again, are another thing that that Liz loves so much.

-[Drew] It's a cool spot. I mean, she has her TV. -And this is a TV.

-This is so great. -Isn't that cool?

She's gonna love it.

Honestly, the space just blew my mind.

To do this over three weeks, it's kind of mind boggling.

Herbs, she's gonna love it. She can cook with them.

For all of us who are really fiercely independent people,

it means a lot to us to be able to stay at home for as long as we can.

These changes will really help Liz

stay home for as long as she wants to stay home.

The counters are almost two inches lower

to make it more convenient for her.

If you end up in a wheelchair at a certain point,

then you can roll in.

-Yeah. -You know, you can reach things better.

It's so exciting 'cause, you know, I owe so much to Liz.

She was there when my mom died.

And now to give her this, to have this accessibility.

It's sort of like this is also a gift for my mom.

My mom didn't get to be Liz's age, you know,

and if she had,

I would want her life to be as easy as it could be.

How does it feel to have been so involved

in something that you had never done before?

Like this is... you were very hands on.

Thank you. [chuckles]

-It's true! From breaking-- -I know, look. Look at this.

-This is cool. Yeah. -Look at this.

These grooves. The grooviest of grooves.

You have put all of these little touches in there for her

because you love her

-and she's done so much for you. -Yeah.

And you also deserve some credit as well.

We wouldn't be here.

None of this would be happening if it wasn't for you.

To honor this woman who's done so much for so many people

is very meaningful to me.

I don't think she ever thought

somebody would do something like this for her.

So listen, I think tomorrow I'll meet her outside.

Maybe we shouldn't have all the cameras because--

-She might notice them? -Exactly.

I know she's antsy to get back home,

so I'm excited to get her back in there.

She's gonna be blown away. Completely.

Sort of like Christmas morning

when you know you've got someone a really great present,

that kind of an excitement,

where you just want to watch them open it.

You can scrape your chopped vegetables right out of there.

[Liz] This is the best.

Do you know that I cook a lot?

-Oh, she told us. -[Patricia] Yes, and look.

It's the first time I could wipe the peel

of the things into the garbage.

That's excellent.

I want to show you something. You're going to love this.

It literally does it all.

[Liz] That is so amazing.

[Patricia chuckles]

[Patricia] And then look over here.

The spices I could never reach.

And look, you can fill your pots of water here.

I can't believe that.

[Patricia] You don't have to schlep back and forth.

[Liz] That is wonderful.

[Drew] Make yourself at home. This is your dishwasher.

It's a drawer style,

so you can just have it opened and you can load everything in here.

You have the two levels.

That is wonderful.

[Drew] Your fridge.

-[Patricia] That's right. -This is the thing that I can't believe.

Patricia, did you choose this color?

-I did. Yes, it was-- -Do you like it?

I love it.

[Patricia] It was one of the beautiful things that we thought,

looking at all your art and all the textiles.

I love my cabinets.

I think it's a incredible color.

You're coming straight to the laundry.

[Patricia] That's right.

[Drew] We tried to add a lot of function in your laundry space here.

So for your washer dryer, you actually have this shelf,

so if you have a laundry basket,

you can bring it over and you can just place it here,

unload all your washer-dryer contents and move it over.

[Liz] Oh, that's wonderful.

You can also look up here to the upper cabinets.

And you just pull here and this comes down to your height.

To have something so functional like this,

you get to live the quality of life you want to live.

It's going to help me a great deal.

[Patricia] You can have your laundry soap

or whatever you might need up there.

[Patricia] Somebody invented these incredible things,

and now to implement them is so great.

It's unbelievable.

Finally, tall cabinets are not just for tall guys.

[Patricia] That's right. I love this thing.

Did you notice that your light would flicker all the time?

I did.

-Yeah. -I noticed.

We fixed the flicker.

-You did? -Yeah.

So we fixed all of it to make sure that it's totally safe.

We wanted to make sure you didn't have anything else that would stress you out.

That is the best thing you could have done for me.

[Patricia] Look how gorgeous the sink is.

I love the quartzite and the wood.

The way that it curves like that

has that 1920s flair that's really beautiful.

[Drew] Patricia said, it would be great for you to have a space

where you can work on your plants,

you can do whatever activities you like.

This is your zone.

I like my plants.

She knows that.

I like it very, very, very, very much.

Smell this. You're going to love it.

That's mint.

Yes, and you can make fresh tea.

[Liz] I have fresh basil and fresh oregano

and that's very important to me.

-And look. -And one thing that you might not have even noticed.

It looks like there's some beautiful art on the wall,

but that's actually a TV, so you can watch whatever you want.

-I love it. -This.

I can watch my football games.

-[laughing] -Kansas City.

And look up here, see this beautiful plates?

I think that is the most beautiful thing.

[Jonathan] Custom made just for you.

And Patricia, she had so many incredible ideas

for not only the colors that you would love

and the finishes you would love,

but also what would make life easier.

So there are no trip hazards.

The counters are at a height that's convenient.

The storage is where you need it.

How does that feel to know that you have somebody

who's watching over you like that?

I can't. I mean...

I can't tell you.

Really, I can't.

I can do a great deal more with this kitchen

than I could have done otherwise.

We wanted to honor you,

and we wanted you to have a beautiful time in your home.

I love you, Liz.
