- [Becca] It was another rainy day.

Mother said it had been
raining for two weeks.

It felt like a year to me.

Every once in a while the rain would stop,

but only for about a minute.

Brewster and I were getting really bored.

For that matter, so were
all the other animals.

They couldn't play outside in the sun

all day the way they liked to.

The only thing any of us could do

was wait for it to stop raining.

And it was anyone's guess
as to when that would be,

but I was hoping it would be real soon.

- I'm sure it's not gonna stop today.

- Oh yes it will, Fritz,
I just know it will.

- Sure it will.

- I guess rainy days are
no fun at all, eh, Fritz?

- I didn't think it was possible

for it to just rain all the time.

- How about a rainy day game?

- What do you have in mind?

- Chess, how about that?

- No.

I think I'd just rather sit here
if it's all the same to you.

- All right, have it your way.

- Hey, Brewster, where you goin' boy?

- Ooh.

- [Jack] Where do you
think he's goin', Becca?

- Maybe he's hidden a bone.

- Fritz, would you mind coming
along with me to the garden?

- [Fritz] You wanna go today?

- I need to pick the
squash before they go bad,

even though this crop is a bit small.

- Why don't you go, Fritz?

Some work would cheer you up.

- I bet you're right, dad.

- I wanna go.

Take me with you.

- No, Becca, you can't come.

- I'm coming with you.

I wanna go.

You hear me?
(laughing)

- [Fritz] The whole forest can hear you.

- [Anna] Well, it's let up a little bit,

but we won't stay long children.

- [Becca] Okay.
- [Fritz] Yes, mother.

- I got one.

(groans)

It's a little on the small side, huh?

- Hardly worth taking it, Becca.

- I don't understand it.

They seem to be getting enough water.

- Yes, but they're not
getting any sun, mother.

- If vegetables could talk
these would ask for umbrellas,

or maybe they'd wanna go on vacation.

How about this one?

- I guess we'd better take it.

- [Becca] Back home
they'd be 10 times as big.

- [Anna] Not much to show
for working in the rain.

- Uh oh, it's getting worse again.

(groans) This is really unbelievable.

You wouldn't think the clouds would

be able to hold this much water.

- [Anna] All right, children, let's go!

It's time to go home now!

- [Fritz] That's for sure, mother.

- [Becca] You wanna play
chess when we get home, Fritz?

- [Fritz] Maybe after I dry off.

(laughing)

- Where does this go, dad?

- [Ernest] On the corner square.

That's right.

Jack, I have to go outside
and draw some water.

You wait here for me.

- [Jack] Alright, daddy.

- I'll be back with some fresh water.

- Bye.

(feet slapping and heavy breathing)

(groan)

The well's polluted with muddy water.

I'll have to dig a
drainage ditch right here.

(grunting and raining)

Pretty good ditch digging for a doctor.

That oughta work for a while.

- Oh hey, Mercedes, you put that down!

Oh, that's it.

You can't play with me anymore, Mercedes.

(drip)

- Hey, Jack, sorry it took me so long,

but the well's polluted
so don't drink any water

unless it's been boiled first.

- Look, dad, there's holes in the roof.

It just keeps on dripping.

- [Ernest] Well, now I've got
something else to keep me busy.

Better take care of this first.

Give me a hand over here will you, Jack?

- [Jack] Sure, dad.

- Put this under one
of the drips, will you?

- [Jack] Yes, sir.

(ping)
Gotcha.

(dripping and pinging)

We'll get them all, right, dad?

- [Ernest] You bet, son.

You're doing a great job.

- [Fritz] Hey, it stopped raining.

- [Becca] Yipee!

Maybe it won't rain again all day.

- That would be wonderful,
but I wouldn't count on it.

- [Fritz] Holy smoke, the
stream's really swollen.

- [Becca] Look, the water's so high

it's running over the bridge.

- We'll have to be very
careful crossing it.

- Becca, let me carry that.

- I can manage.

- Well, be careful.

Follow me.

- (laughing)

- Hey, mom, here I go.

(screams)

- [Fritz] Hey!

It's all right now.

(sigh)

(gasping)

- What's the matter, Becca?

(screaming)

- Listen, what's the matter with you?

- (screams) I dropped my bucket!

- Hey, there it is right over there.

- [Becca] Where?

- Right over there by the rocks.

Let's go get it, Becca.

Come on.

- Look, Brewster's got it.

Bring it here, Brewster.

That's a good boy.

Oh, thank you, Brewster.

What a good boy.

(whimper)

Huh?

- Why, thank you, Brewster.

He's been acting so strange
lately, don't you think?

- [Fritz] You can say that again, mom.

He disappears all the time.

And when you least expect
it, he turns up again.

- That's right.

He went for a walk in the rain today, mom.

- But he still comes
home at meal time, dear.

(sheep bleating)

- Oh look, father's up there on the roof.

- [Anna] Yes, I wonder why.

- Father, what are you doing?

- Well, it's good to have you all back.

I'm just patching a bunch
of leaks in the roof.

- Leaks, oh my goodness.

Do you think you can fix them?

- [Ernest] Of course.

I'm pretty good at this
sort of thing you know,

but I could use a hand, Fritz.

- Okay, here I come.

(pouring rain)

(ominous music and pinging)

- I guess I'm not as good at
roof repairs as I thought.

I'm sorry, dear.

- You did a great job, darling.

At least the beds are dry.

- Yes, we were able to
fix this part of the roof.

- Good work, no fun sleeping standing up.

- I don't know, horses don't mind it.

Dad, what are we going to
do if it keeps raining?

This house just can't take it.

- Hmmm.

- Yes, dear, and it
seems impossible for you

to rebuild it until this
wet weather clears up.

- Right, and the main
supports are rotting.

Is there any place else we can go?

- There's no alternative now, son.

- Hey, how about we go live in a cave?

- What, are you kidding?

- No.

Daddy, isn't it true that
ancient man lived in caves?

- So, you're not an ancient man.

- Come on, Fritz.

I think it's a really good idea.

- It's a great idea, Becca,

but I don't see how we can
start digging a cave right now.

- But, dad...

- It'd be as hard to dig a shelter

as it would be to fix this one
in the pouring rain, Becca.

I'm sure of that.

- [Becca] But...

- Of course, if we had the tools

we could dig into the side of the cliff,

but that's just wishful thinking.

- Daddy, we don't have to dig a cave.

There already is one.

I found it.

- Hmmm?

- Becca, when did that happen?

- When I got lost in the woods.

I told you I got lost,

but I forgot to mention the cave.

- Becca, are you making this up?

- No, daddy, I mean it.

- Then can you remember where it was?

- Huh?

- Just let me think about it.

Um, hmm.

I can't remember where it is, daddy.

- Why not, you found it once.

You should be able to find it again.

- I know.

It was the day I got caught
in the really bad downpour,

so I was running home.

It was hard to see and
I was in such a hurry

that I stumbled into this cave.

I was able to catch my breath

and get out of the rain for a while,

but I started to feel kinda creepy

all alone in that great big cave.

(thunder)

Then it thundered so loud

that it scared the wits out of me,

and I ran away as fast as I could.

(crying)

I got away from there so
fast I don't really know

if I could ever find the place again.

- But, Becca, you could lead me back

to the area it was in, couldn't you?

- I think so, dad.

You found me right after I
came around Breezy Point,

so the cave shouldn't
be too far from there.

I guess we should start at
Breezy Point, right, dad?

- Sounds like a good place to start.

Fritz, you wanna go with us?

- Sure.

- [Ernest] Fritz, we're going to

have to bring a lit torch with us.

- [Fritz] How come?

- If we find the cave, it'll be dark.

- Why don't we light it when we get there?

- [Ernest] You forget we have no matches.

- Oh, you're right.

- [Ernest] Take a stick from the fire.

- Hey, Brewster's taken off again.

I wonder where he goes?

- -[Becca] So it was
that father, Fritz, and I

hiked all the way to Breezy
Point to find the cave.

It had stopped raining so it was

especially fun being out there again.

I called it Breezy Point because it looked

just like the mountain lake in Switzerland

where we spent our vacations,

only there were no
guest houses, no stores,

no people except for us.

It was as if we were explorers discovering

Breezy Point for the very first time.

- Well, Becca, this is
where I found you, remember?

- Yes, dad.

I think I came from over there.

- [Fritz] Are you sure,
or are you just guessing?

- [Becca] I'm sure.

I think.

- [Fritz] Great.

- Hmmm.

Uh, well, I think I'm completely lost.

- Come on, Becca.

Try to remember.

- I am trying, but I can't find it.

Every path looks exactly the same.

- [Ernest] You're right,
pumpkin, but don't get upset.

It would be easy to get
lost in this jungle.

- [Becca] That day we searched
and searched for the cave,

but after what felt like many hours,

we hadn't seen anything like a cave,

and I was more confused than ever.

- Becca, do you see anything at
all here that looks familiar?

- [Becca] I really don't think so, dad.

It all looks the same.

- Did you stop someplace besides the cave?

- No, what's that?

Men, follow me.

(laughing)

Ah ha, I seem to remember this rock.

- A very memorable rock I must say.

- I recognize it.

It's the rock I leaned
against after I left the cave.

I was really scared and wet at the time,

so I can't be 100 percent
positive about it,

but I think this is the one all right.

This is surely the rock.

- All right, do you know
where you came from?

- Uh huh, from over there, see?

- Well, let's take a look.

(ominous music)

- You're starting to
look lost again, Becca.

- It's just gotta be
around here somewhere.

I can feel it.

Yes, I think it's maybe just a

little ways beyond those bushes.

- Let's continue to search then.

(ominous music)

- (gasps) Daddy, Fritz,
I found it, I found it!

- [Ernest] Becca, where are you?

Did you really find it?

Becca?

- [Becca] Never mind, I made a mistake.

- Look, just what we needed, huh, dad?

- Fritz, don't let the torch go out.

- Becca, come here!

- [Becca] Here I come!

I bet people in the desert

would love to have this rain.

- Oh, it's getting wet.

Oh no, I'm sorry, dad.

- It's not your fault, Fritz.

Just as well, we should quit for today.

- Oh, come on.

I was just getting warm.

I know we can find that cave.

- Becca, you were dreaming, right?

The cave doesn't exist.

- It isn't a dream.

It's the real thing.

If you're too lazy to help me,

I'll go look for it myself.

- Your brother's helped a lot, Becca.

Nobody's being lazy, but it
is time to call it a day.

- [Becca] I didn't feel
like quitting at all,

but what else could I do?

We walked on home in the rain.

None of us knew that Brewster
was up to his old tricks again.

He knew some secret,

but he wasn't telling
any of us what it was.

- I'm hungry.

It's hard work searching all day,

especially when what you're
searching for is only a dream.

- It's not a dream.

It really exists.

Oh, look, it's Brewster.

- [Fritz] Here, Brewster.

Come here, boy.

- Come, Brewster, heel.

- Bad dog, you come right now.

- Come on, you hear me?

- Here boy.

It's all right, Brewster.

That's a good dog.

Thata boy.

We're going home for dinner now.

(slow music and raining)

- [Anna] Soup's ready, Brewster.

Here boy.

(whimper)

There you go, boy.

Enjoy it.

Well, Brewster's having his dinner.

That dog is acting so strange.

I don't understand it.

All he does is come home for
his meals and go out again.

- [Ernest] He has been
acting strange lately.

- I wonder where he runs off to?

- We ran into him way deep
in the jungle this afternoon.

- [Becca] That's right, mom.

- Maybe he's not so strange.

No dog likes to stay cooped
up in the house all day.

- I understand that, but every animal has

the intelligence to stay out of the rain.

- [Ernest] Maybe there's
something out there

that satisfies his canine curiosity.

- Hey, Brewster, Brewster.

Oh, boy, did you go out again?

He's out there somewhere.

(drips)

- [Becca] That night it rained really hard

and the leaks were worse than ever.

We slept through it peacefully though,

until the leaks followed
us right into our beds.

There was really only one thing to do.

Fritz and I decied to move
down to the dry lower bunks.

Fritz slept with dad and
I slept with mom and Jack.

It was morning again before we knew it,

and sure enough, big old
Brewster came trudging home.

Only this time he had brought a

truly amazing surprise for us,

a surprise that was to change
our life on the island.

Oh my, Brewster's back home.

- Sure he is.

He wants his breakfast.

- Don't worry, I'll get it.

It's good, isn't it boy?

You must be hungry after being out

in the rain all night long.

Huh, it's a broken tea cup.

Where'd this come from?

Brewster, did you bring
this home with you?

(barks)

Really, but where did you get it?

(whines)

I wish I understood.

Brewster, can you
remember where you got it?

Somebody must have thrown
it out cuz they broke it.

Who must have thrown it out?

There's nobody here but us on this island.

Brewster, this is a significant discovery.

You'll have to show me where you found it.

Maybe there are other people living here.

Brewster, wait.

Let's bring everybody.

Hey, Brewster!

Oh boy.

I can't miss out on this opportunity.

Here I come.

I probably shouldn't have
done it, but I had to.

I followed Brewster way
out into the jungle.

It was like being on a treasure hunt

only I had no idea what I might find.

Would there be just things,

or people where Brewster was taking me?

And if there were people,
would they be friendly?

Oh well, one problem at a time I thought.

Hey, Brewster.

Wait up will ya?

Wait up, Brewster, wait up.

Hey, this looks like the same area

we searched just yesterday.

Where's Brewster?

Hey, Brewster!

This place, it sure looks familiar to me.

I wonder where Brewster ran off to now?

Brewster, Brewster!

Brewster, where are you?

Hey, Brewster, don't leave
me alone here like this.

Oh no.

He's disappeared into thin air.

Hey, oh boy, this is great.

Brewster, Brewster!

Oh!

(barking)

There you are.

Hey, Brewster, wait up for me.

Here I come.

I'm right behind you.

(gasps) This is it, I'm sure.

My cave.

I knew it wasn't a dream.

Brewster, did you know
it was here all the time?

Did you, boy?

Brewster, come on out of there.

Bad, Brewster.

Hey, Brewster boy.

Thanks a lot.

Hurry up.

Come on.

Will you please go faster?

Come on, hurry up!

- The cave's been there
for several thousand years.

I'm sure it can wait a few minutes.

- Yes, but I can't wait.

(giggling)

It's right over here.

It's right over here, see?

I told you.

It's no dream, Fritz, you see?

- [Fritz] You were right, I'm sorry.

- [Ernest] Good girl, Becca.

I'm proud of you.

- [Anna] This cave is frightening.

I wouldn't want to live in here.

- [Ernest] It won't be so bad, Anna,

once we get it cleaned up a little bit.

- Brewster led me here, dad.

- Hey, where's Brewster gone to now?

- He must be down in the cave.

Brewster!

Brewster!

(bats squeaking)

(gasp)

- [Ernest] Come here, Becca.

Here, hold the torch.
