- [Becca] Boy, we haven't had much fun

around here in the last week.

First Jack got sick.

Father said it was
something called Malaria

and that the only thing
that could help him

was the bark from a certain tree.

So he and Fritz went out to look for it.

Then, while they were gone,

mother came down with the same thing.

It sure was scary having mother

and Jack sick at the same time.

Finally, father and Fritz
returned with the bark.

They boiled it to make this awful tea

that we all had to drink.

Well, at least it helped
mother and Jack to feel better.

- Mercedes, you settle down right now.

Settle down Mercedes!

Ow! Mercedes stop...

- (crosstalk) Don't let
Mercedes get up on the table.

Breakfast is ready.

- Mother said to stop, you stop, ahh!

- Oh, Mercedes.

- Now you did it.

- You go play while we have breakfast.

Now go on.

- What do you think, father?

It looks to me like that medicine

you got from the bark worked.

- Yes, they don't seem
to have anymore fever.

- Mm-hm. I think you're both correct.

- Did you say something?

And why are all of you staring at us?

- Well, Anna, we were
just appreciating the fact

that the both of you feel so much better.

- I'm glad too,

but there's something
I'd like to talk about.

- All right.

- [Anna] Shall we sit?

- [Becca] Good breakfast mother.

- [Anna] Thank you, Becca.

- Well, Anna, you said there was something

you wanted to discuss?

- Yes, Ernest. It's this
terrible bout with Malaria.

I'm really very frightened.

I mean, I'm quite
grateful for our recovery,

but Jack was so sick and
I was completely helpless.

Do you understand?

- Mm-hm.

- We don't have any hospitals here.

There aren't any other doctors

to discuss strange new symptoms with.

Who knows what undiscovered

diseases might be on this island.

- Yes. We are very vulnerable here.

- Mm-hm. We were able to find
the right medicine this time,

but will we be able to find the right

plant for the next sickness?

Ernest, you're an excellent doctor.

I'm not questioning your abilities,

but how effective can you be
without the proper medicine?

- Well, it's possible that we might find

ourselves up against an
illness that we cannot treat.

- So then, maybe we should
try putting our effort

into finding a way to leave this island?

- What? Mother, what about being patient

and waiting for another ship
to pass by and rescue us?

- And wonder who's going
to be the next one ill?

No. I want to build a ship.

- Well, I think we should
at least give it a try.

What do you think, father?

- Well, as you both know,

I've been thinking along the
same lines for some time,

and I've come up with a number of

different designs for a ship,

but all of them are beyond our abilities.

I'm afraid a dug out canoe is

the most we can hope to accomplish.

With that in mind, I
think we should consider

the possibility of more than one canoe,

perhaps lashing them
together side by side.

- How about making them larger

so that maybe three
people could fit in one?

You see, that way we wouldn't have to

construct as many canoe's.

- [Ernest] Good idea Fritz,

but we'll have to start with larger trees.

- [Fritz] I know we can find them father.

- Well, when should we start?

- How about right now?

- Yes, let's start right away.

- Yeah, we're going to build a boat!

- (crosstalk) Yay!

- [Becca] So father and Fritz went off

to look for just the right trees.

I'm sure I could have helped them

but mother said I had to
stay at the tree house

and watch Jack.

I made the mistake of asking
what I was supposed to do

while everyone was gone.

I got the usual response. School work.

Seven eighths multiplied
by three fourths is...

I may not know what the answer is

but I do know I'm bored with school work.

- Why don't you come down, play with me?

I'm not bored with any of my school work.

- No thanks.

Well, so much for math.
I'd better start spelling.

- (mother humming)

- Huh? Oh. Hm.

Nobody will miss me if I go for a walk.

I'd better not take Jack along.
He'll make too much noise.

(grunts)

Shh.

- And you stay right there Mr. Block.

(upbeat music)

- (Becca laughing)

- [Fritz] Father, come over
here and look at this one.

I think it's big enough, don't you?

- Yes. This one'll do nicely.

- Oh. This is the wrong
place to take a walk.

(Becca panting)

I'm sure they would have
made me study some more.

I wasn't sure which direction I had run

but I was glad I discovered this

beautiful meadow of flowers.

Ah. All done. (giggling)

Boy, I'm going to have to bring mother

back to this wonderful meadow.

(gentle music)

Ah. The water's cold.
Good morning fishies.

I have to tell dad about this stream.

I don't remember him ever mentioning it.

I wonder if this stream is
coming out of a big lake.

Maybe. (giggling)

- Huh? Jack, what are you doing down here?

I thought I told you and Becca
to stay in the tree house

until I called you for lunch.

- I know mother,

but Becca left me in the
tree house all alone.

- What? Becca left you?

- Hey. The stream widens
out into a little pond.

I can go swimming. Yip-yahoo!

(Becca laughing)

- Why, hello mother.

- Well I certainly am
impressed. What a tree!

- It is large, but we'll
need to use trees this big

to carry all five of us.

- How many trees of this size do you

think you're going to need?

- [Ernest] Depending on
the length, three or four.

- Excuse me you two. Stand back.

I'll show you how it's done.

- (laughing) Be my guest.

Nice, even strokes.

- [Fritz] Don't worry, I've got it.

(sawing)

- Did you need something else, Anna?

- Well, you haven't seen
Becca by any chance, have you?

- Where is she? She's not up
in the tree house with Jack?

- No.

- (gasp)

(splash)

Going for a swim beats sitting
around the house any time,

especially if you've just discovered

a new place to do it in.

Just think, I may be the first person

in the whole world to swim in this pond.

Back home in Switzerland,

somebody had always gotten

to where you were going before you.

But here on the island I get there first.

(sneeze)

It's time to go back.

(shivering)

Oh, I'm freezing.

Ah, that's much warmer.

Now I'm ready to walk home.

Hey. Mercedes? Is that you? Mercedes?

(squeak)

Well, it is you. What are you doing here?

Come here. Come here Mercedes.

What's the matter with you?

It's just me, Becca.

(grunts)

Mercedes. Come back here!

Oh, come on now. You stop it.

Quit running away. Stay there.

Good. Ah-ha!

Oh, you're making me mad Mercedes.

I'm not playing any more.

Mercedes, where are you? Mercedes!

It's Becca.

Oh, why don't you come out

and we'll both go back to the tree house?

(squeak)

Huh? So, there you are.

Wait a minute.

Mercedes, I've been
looking all over for you

and I'm mad because you kept running away!

(squeak)

Huh? You're not even paying attention.

We're going to go back home and, hey!

Not in the tree.

Mercedes, come out of there.

(growl)

(upbeat music)

(Becca screaming)

- Help, get away from me!

(screaming)

(upbeat music)

(grunt)

I forgot Mercedes has a lot
of relatives on this island

and I obviously just ran into some

of the less friendly ones.

That was close! (laughs)

(panting)

I must have missed a turn.

(gasping)

I don't know where I am.

This isn't the right way either.

I've never been in this
part of the forest before.

I'll go back to the stream.

(panting)

Well, I don't see the stream anywhere.

Oh. Hm. Oh no.

I can't even hear the waterfall.

If I can't hear the waterfall
I won't find the stream,

if I don't find the stream, (crying)

I won't find my way back home!

(crying)

I've got to get a hold of myself.

There's no time for panicking.

All I have to do is think of
some way to retrace my steps.

(animal chatter)

(crying)

(Fritz panting)

- Well I checked over by the garden.

- Did you check lookout point, Fritz?

- Yes. The point and the beach below.

I couldn't find her anywhere.

- [Ernest] Hm.

- Well, sit down and have lunch.

You can look again after you've eaten.

- Brewster, did you see where Becca went?

(dog whines)

That is, boy. Go find Becca.

Go f... Oh.

I guess he didn't see where she went.

- Well, she's not been gone long.

Don't worry. I'm sure that we'll find her.

- Yeah. She probably went for a walk.

- One thing for sure is that I'm going to

have a few words to say to Becca.

Leaving Jack like that was not right.

- Well I've really done it this time.

I couldn't find anything
that I recognized.

I was probably going around in circles

without even knowing it.

One thing I did know was
that I was feeling very alone

and scared.

(crying)

(panting)

(crying)

I'm lost. Nobody will ever find me here.

It's hopeless.

(crying)

(screams)

A big snake! Go away!

(crying)

(screaming)

Help!

After I escaped from the snake

I ran for a long time through the forest,

but I still didn't see anything
that reminded me of home.

I knew that I'd miss lunch,

but if I didn't find my way back soon,

I was going to miss dinner as well.

(whimpering)

I'm so hungry. There must
be some food around here.

What's this?

Hm. (gulp)

Oh, I've never seen it before
but it looks delicious.

(yelling out)

(spitting)

(coughing)

I don't know what kind of plant that was

but it sure wasn't anything eatable.

Now I was lost, scared,
hungry and my eyes hurt.

(dog barking)

- That's not like Brewster.

I wonder what he saw or heard.

- Brewster. Brewster, what is it boy?

(dog whimpers)

Well, he hasn't acted like
this since Becca ran away.

- Hey, Brewster, come back here!

Brewster!

- I think we ought to follow him.

- Right.

I've never seen him this way before.

Have you father?

- No I haven't.

- This meadow sure is pretty.

- Yes it is. Becca would think so too.

- [Fritz] Maybe Brewster was just thirsty.

- [Ernest] No, he's
definitely tracking something.

I just hope we find it soon.

(dog whimpers)

This is a stream we haven't traced yet.

I wonder what its source
is, spring or lake.

- Father, don't you think
Brewster seems a little confused?

- Hm? He seems to have lost
the scent we were following.

It's really very easy to lose
a track through the water.

I think that's what he's done.

- Whatever we're following is long gone.

Probably went down stream.

Come on Brewster, it's time to go home.

But let me tell you something,

this better be the last
wild goose chase we go on.

(dog whimpers)

What did you find, Brewster?

Oh, father. Come look at this.

- [Ernest] What is it Fritz?

- [Fritz] It's some kind of flower wreath.

- Let me see that.

- Becca makes these, doesn't she?

- Yes. She must have
dropped it in the stream.

- [Fritz] So she went up river.

- I'm afraid our Becca has become lost.

Let's go find her.

- (grunting) I hope these
at least taste good.

(grunting)

I'll just eat this part.

(gulp)

This is horrible! Blah!

(moaning)

(crying)

Mother!

As bad as the day was turning out for me,

I had no idea how it was affecting others.

(Anna sighs)

- [Fritz] Father, father!

- What is it Fritz?

- Brewster's headed
that way. He's tracking.

Good boy, Brewster. Take us to Becca.

(dog sniffing)

- As if being lost wasn't enough.

(crying) I'll make it to that cave.

(gasping)

(panting)

This cave has a funny smell.

I wonder if anything lives here.

A whole pack of jackals could
fit in a cave this size.

Oh.

Anybody there? Anybody in the cave?

(thunder rolling)

(Becca screams)

Mama! (crying)

It was getting dark and all
I wanted was to be home.

(upbeat music)

- Father, why has he stopped?

- The rain has washed
away some of the scent.

I hope we can find her before dark.

- Oh.

- (screaming)

(crying)

- [Ernest] Brewster has lost
the scent completely it seems.

- Do you think we should
split up now, father?

- That's a good idea Fritz.

You take Brewster and search over there

and I'll look over in this direction.

- Be careful.

- I will and you do the same, Fritz.

Remember, there are
jackals about. Good luck.

- Let's go Brewster.

Becca.

- Becca! Becca, where are you?

No moon. I've got to find her fast. Becca.

(gun shot)

- Huh?

- Oh.

- Oh dear.

(gun shot)

- Becca. Becca, can you hear me?

Becca! Becca!

- Huh?

Father!

Father!

- Hm?

Becca!

Becca!

Becca, can you hear me? Becca!

- Help father! Down here! Down here!

- Becca! Becca, answer me! Becca!

- [Becca] Father, I'm
(crosstalk) right here! Help me!

Help!

- Becca?

Oh, Becca.

- Oh.

Oh, father, I've been so scared, father.

Forgive me. I disobeyed,
I'm sorry. (crying)

- Hold on Becca, I'm
coming to take you home.

(Becca crying)

All right, here we go.

- [Ernest] Anna? Look who
I found in the forest.

- Oh, Ernest, wherever did you find her?

Is she all right?

- She's fine now, dear, although
she was quite frightened.

- Well she seems to be
resting comfortably after all.

- Yes.

- Getting lost was sure a
hard way to learn a lesson.

I mean, all I wanted to
do was to go for a walk

and I ended up scaring
myself half to death

and worrying my family.

Next time I'll tell
someone where I'm going

or I'll take Brewster along or maybe both.

Better yet, next time I'll
study like I was told to do.

But for now, I'm happy
just to be home in bed

and back with my family.
