we stay on this island

I keep thinking that if we
ever get back to civilization

and fill it with our own homemade items.

always laughs and says

that though we do a good
job, the things we make

aren't quite delicate enough to sell.

I still think it's a good idea.

Anyway, it's time for our island family

to begin another fun-filled day.

(grunting) (twig snapping)

(chirping birds)

- Huh?

Well, good morning, father.

- Good morning.

- What's this thing? One
of those curtain rods

mom's been wanting you to make?

- No, Fritz, that was going to be a bow,

but they're a lot harder to make

than I thought they would be.

- But why are you trying
to make such a big bow?

Becca and Jack'll never
be able to play with it.

- Well, I'm not trying
to make a toy, Fritz.

This is a bow to use for hunting.

- For hunting? But what about the guns?

- The problem isn't with the guns.

It's with the ammunition.

We used up a lot of our bullets

trying to signal that ship.

Now, I haven't told your mother this,

but we're down to our
last thirteen cartridges.

And then we're out.

So I think it's best that we save them

in case of an emergency.

You never know when we
may see another ship.

Don't worry. I bet with
a little archery practice

we won't even miss our guns.

Besides, it'll make hunting
more of a challenge.

I love our treehouse,

I would always rather go out with dad,

because there's always
the chance for adventure.

I feel sad that mom
had to stay home today.

I bet it's very lonely.

likes to stay home sometimes,

because she gets a lot more
done when we're not all around.

I still think she misses us, though.

Hopefully, mom's foot will get better soon

so she'll be able to go
on our next excursion.

(snapping)

(barking)

- Mom. Mom!

Mom, guess what?!

We found rubber!

We found it when I noticed

something sticky coming out of a tree

after I shot it with an arrow.

- Let me try explaining it
so it'll make some sense.

Mom, we came across some rubber trees.

- Did you find a lot of them?

- Mm-hmm. A forest.

- At first, I didn't know what it was,

but it looked important,
so I showed it to dad.

He knew right away that
it was a rubber tree.

You see?

- I think I understand.

And I bet you were the first one

to discover the rubber tree, right, Becca?

- [Becca] How did you know, mom?

- Becca! Oh.

And we might even be able to make shoes

- I still hope that dad
will make some toys next.

- I've got to learn how to shoot that bow.

We have to finish these candles.

There's enough candles here for us

to play chess all night, Fritz.

- [Fritz] We won't need them if I beat you

as quickly as usual.

making shoes right away.

The first thing we had to
do was make a clay mold

of everyone's foot.

and see if it's the right size.

- Looks fine.

- Hmm. This looks like a match.

Yes, now let's dip it in the rubber.

Well, here we go.

Our first homemade shoe.

- Dad, I'm all finished making my shoe.

- Yes, that looks like a good job.

Now, when you're finished, Becca

you should dry your shoe over the fire.

- I think it's fun to make shoes, dad.

We should do this everyday.

- Don't stand too close, Becca.

(crackling)

I can't wait until our shoes are finished.

and take out the stick.

make sure your hands are clean.

And now, ladies and gentlemen,

it's time for the final
and most crucial step

in our shoe experiment.

There. Our first pair of homemade shoes.

on and see if they fit.

I know they're not the
latest style, but...

- Go on, mom.

(grunting)

In fact, these shoes
are so easy to walk in,
