to secure enough protein.

just get by on a few fish

when it's a group of nine.

you really should be covering

your feet and your
hands in mud and stuff.

conflicting strategies

are creating tension

Ryan: The group that
has been here the longest

are not the best hunters.

So I set snares

where I felt something
big was gonna come down.

It's not gonna get
through this one.

Jake: It seems as
though one of the nyala

has gotten caught up in
one of Ryan's foot snares.

However, his tie-off
point was way too weak.

I mean, they're strong.

That's the thing is, like,
we need bases of trees.

Yeah, it's got to
be wrapped around

like a 3-inch-thick green tree.

-Yeah.
-Yeah.

Well, working with what I got.

I took it upon myself to utilize
the material that we have.

You know, it wasn't a
failure. It snared the animal.

Yeah, it got away, but it's not
gonna get away a second time.

I got like six, seven more
snares I'm gonna put up there.

Just got to tie them off to
something heavier next time.

When I was a kid, an
old-timer took me out

and taught me
snaring, like, hardcore.

I mean, for a couple years,

I killed hundreds and
hundreds of animal,

like, up to deer size.

I also always, like, put brush
up against my neck snares

so they think that they're
pushing through brush.

[ Sighs ] I'm
gonna go rinse off.

It's a lot easier doing
this by myself yesterday.

Steven: If you don't, you
know, set up the snare right,

it's not gonna work.

It's a big loss. I mean,
that was a lot of meat,

and it really -- it would have
done a lot for everybody.

So we can't make
that mistake again.

[ Fire crackling ]

Super-windy night.

The fire is throwing
coals and little embers

into our hair and
body and burning us.

And it's just kind of not the
funnest in the whole world,

so we're not really
able to fall asleep.

The wind is whipping.

Sparks flying everywhere.

Luckily there's no rain.

[ Thunder rumbling ]

Woman: Not gonna be a fun night.

It's early morning on
day 23, and it's miserable.

I'm really hungry right now,

which does not help these
kind of situations at all.

[ Insects buzzing ]

Last night was a little
rough, to say the least.

We had a pretty steady
rain for most of the night.

You kind of have
to grin and bear it.

Hopefully have a
productive rest of the day

and get a little food and,
um, keep pushing through.

After that nyala got
snared yesterday,

that had to freaking [bleep]

Like, "oh, my god, I got
to get something now."

-So sick of setting snares.

It's gonna pay off

'cause I put a lot of time
and effort into what I do.

I don't know.

I mean, I feel
like at this point,

it's almost worth finding
a different hunting ground

that's completely clean
of smells and [bleep]

Darrin: Yeah, like, I
really want to go back

and try hunting
back at Alpha camp.

I see more animals over
there in the first two hours of day

than I've seen the
whole time I've been here.

Steven: It's like a
freaking zoo over there.

Yeah.

I want to go back to my old camp

just because there's so
much more game there.

100 animals a day come down
to drink there instead of 20 here.

It would be 10 times more
effective over there, I think.

Earlier we can get
big game, the better.

I want the best hunter
in the best location

to secure food for us.

It's a risk, but at this point,
we really don't have any food,

so something's got to be done.

Ryan: Well, how long
you plan on going?

I'd say two days.

If nothing's caught by day 25,
are you both gonna come back?

No matter what, on day 25,
both of us are gonna be back here.

Yeah.

I'm one of those
people that likes

being able to take
care of somebody,

you know, have
people to take care of.

I grew up hunting.
That's what I love to do.

One of my main goals was
to kill an animal with my atlatl.

It's the most primitive
weapon on the planet.

This is my
opportunity right now.

Darrin: We only
have two arrows left.

Just got to get some
bone points ready

if we're gonna go
on a hunting trip.

Kim has a bow, but I have
the best success in this group

with that bow to get an animal.

I have indigenous living skills.

When I was a small child,

I learned to hunt and live off
the land with primitive tools,

to make my own
tools to hunt with.

When you're notching those hot,

you might end up
snapping the whole thing.

Jake: There's a lot
of lions in the den now

as far as skill sets.

Darrin has the most to offer,
as we've been reminded...A lot.

Darrin: Saw two
grooves, not just one.

And never twist your knife

'cause if you get a
crack going down that,

you hit a bone like a rib bone,
instead of it going through,

it'll crack your shaft
back and split it.

Our journey from point "a" to
point "b" is always treacherous.

This is one of the few
places on the planet

where half the
animals can kill you.

There's sign -- lions, leopards.

The threats are real,

and it puts you in your place

On day 2, like, right near my
blind, we saw two male lions.

hunt during the day, too.

tanks are emptying,

everybody's still
trying their hardest

to really make this group

We decided that today we
could go and get some cattails

and hopefully harvest enough
to use sort of like a potato.

And we think that
having some starch

will be long-lasting sugar
to keep our energy levels up.

These are cattail tubers.

They're the roots
of the cattail.

Looks, like, just so disgusting.

But all of us are starving.

They're gonna be so good.

I think we're good.

Ryan: While Darrin and
Steven are over there,

I think my energy
is best spent here.

I'm just gonna inundate
this entire hillside

in the best spots
with foot snares.

You know, it is just
me, one out of nine,

that really thinks that
these things are gonna work.

I'm determined,
and I'm not giving up.

There's a nyala right there.

It's freaking nuts.

Just showed up to
Darrin and Kim's camp.

Had some of the most
animal activity I've seen yet.

All the animals
come down to water.

You can see where the mud is
all churned up from their hooves.

So they all come from two paths.

They either come from over here

or they come from right here.

My game plan is for me to
take the blind that is enclosed,

where I can shoot a bow from,

and on the other
side of our lake,

there's an open area
with some tall grass

where Steven can duck
down, 'cause he's got an atlatl.

An atlatl takes
more space to throw.

That'd be perfect. I
can even stand up.

I'm gonna go build
up my blind a little bit.

Cool.

When you're in a blind, you
got to position it in the right area

so you're close
enough to a game trail

but not too close that
it's gonna spook anything.

Right in here, I
got my little blind.

When I sit down, basically,
just my eyes are over the top.

I can move around enough to
where I don't make any noise.

I can see Darrin's blind
right across from my spot.

[Bleep] [ Groans ]

Primitive hunting requires
the utmost Patience.

The slightest twitch in a
blind will scare the animals.

Here, no matter where they are,

there is something
trying to kill them,

and they're so on guard.

[ Arrow clatters ]

I can get an atlatl
shot off at an impala.

I couldn't stand up.

I had to do it sitting down,

and I clipped a tree branch,
broke the tip of my atlatl.

It's, like, a huge bummer.

Ryan: These are
wildebeest horns that I found,

and I knew I wanted
to do something with it,

so utilizing a little
bit of the snare wire,

I'm working on making
myself a nice, little headdress.

I've got some high
hopes that my snares

are gonna be
extremely effective today.

Can't wait to watch one of
these nyala get snagged up

and snared for us to have
an abundance of protein.

They're coming down.

Woman: I feel like they're
way more cautious now.

Yeah, maybe because
they already snared one once

and they're super wary now.

There's one coming
down right there.

Ryan: There's two or
three nyala right now

within 10 feet of
two of my snares,

and they know something's up.

Oh, there's one coming
around to the other snare.

Two feet in front of it --

two feet in front of
that deer is a snare.

Right there -- head down to
the snare, smelling the snare.

All he's got to do is take two
steps forward and he's snagged.

They're leaving.

I don't know how they
know, but they know.

Stacey: Today we had
another failed attempt

on our snares across the lake.

Had quite a few nyala
come down, sniff out,

and completely go around
some of the snares, so that sucks.

I can't believe that [bleep]

I hope Darrin and Steve
are successful today.

Steven: Today's hunt
is absolutely crazy.

I've seen over 100 animals,
but they're all out of range.

Burned a bunch of calories today

just sitting out
there in the sun.

It's a bummer, man.

atlatl dart with a bone point,

listen to my instruction.

gonna provide for the group.

if he's threatened,

but to make me feel
that I'm not good enough,

it really upsets me.

It is what it is, and I'm

because there is at least two
lions moving around our camp.

what my body looks like.

I can see it, and I look gaunt.

that you can come
face-to-face with.

could actually kill you.

to get, like, rocks.

we would come back over

that sometimes you
need to pass the torch

and think more about the
group than just yourself.

since we've gone from being
successful to getting skunked.

for figs and dates and nuts

and the new opportunities
for fishing holes.

bet at this point

is gonna be to try to harvest
Darrin and Kim's old camp.

to get as many fish

and as many turtles out of
there in the next couple days.

for staying over there,
refusing to come back,

and refusing to bring
back the bow and arrow,

which is a group item
and a group weapon --

our success out here.

Steven kind of worried me.
We had a little argument.

At the end of the day, he,
like, got frustrated with his atlatl

and literally, like,
started chasing a nyala

with a rock in his hand.

Like, that's how desperate
he is to make a kill.

Someone making
decisions like that

jeopardizing all
of our safeties.

Kim: We depend on each other,

and when we make a plan that
someone's gonna come back

in a survival
situation, it's pretty big.

And then he says everyone
over here's just lazy

and waiting to survive.

Phaedra: Seriously?
He said that?

But he really said,
"everybody over there's lazy"?

Yeah. Everyone's --

you know, he was like,
"we're just waiting it out."

I'm like, "no, I don't see
anyone over here being lazy."

Jake: Well, if he's
calling us lazy,

might have to talk a
little sense into Steven.

It sounds like that's gonna
be more challenging, then.

Well, I definitely want him
to air his side of the story, too.

just jump the gun.

and he had mentioned you guys
had a bit of a heated argument.

The plan was to come
back with the bow and arrow,

and I think it rubbed
some people the wrong way

as far as, I guess,
you mentioned

that the group's been
kind of lazy and...

I never said anybody
was being lazy.

Yeah.

You know, it is what it is,

and I think we just
have to take a step back,

think about the group.

I mean, as of right now,

they asked if I could
take the bow and arrow.

Jake came all
this way, you know,

just to basically take
the bow out of my hands.

I'm pretty pissed off right now.

Oh, yeah.

All right.

I'm just trying to put meat
on the table for everybody,

and now I'm the [bleep] bad guy.

Hurts my feelings, man.

I think some words
got turned around,

and we need to nip
this in the bud, I think.

I made an executive
decision yesterday

to kind of stay and hunt.

I never had a chance
to use the bow.

I was really hoping
to get the opportunity

to put food on the table.

I mean, I feel
like I'm a provider.

And that's what I do at home,

and that's what
I try to do here.

But that's not what we
agreed to as a group,

and that's why I left.

When you make a plan, you
stick to the plan no matter what

in these situations. Yeah.

got into it yesterday.

He -- he twisted a
lot of words around.

He said that I called you all
lazy and a few other things.

You did say some
remarks to those lines.

You put words in my mouth.

You said, like, you know,

"everyone's laying around when
they should be doing something."

No, I never said that, Darrin.

And like I said, I'm not gonna
do this back-and-forth thing.

I'm sorry you guys got
the wrong impression,

but I feel like I kind
of got ganged up on

and I couldn't defend myself.

I know that I never
said anything derogatory

or down-putting.

But you can take
with it what you want.

I would hope that you all's
impression of me by now

would be that I'm looking
for the benefit of the group.

He said that we
are lazy over here.

When I asked at
least three times

and you repeated,
"yes, that's what he said,"

and you're saying,
"absolutely not.

-I didn't say that."
-He did make comments about --

not comments. I
said, "did he say that?"

I absolutely did not say that.

And you said, "yes." And so --

I know that came
out in a conversation

about everyone laying around
over there, not doing anything.

That's not true, either, Darrin.

If I'm being honest,

I feel like I just don't
know what the true story is.

Trust is a big deal out here.

We need to trust each other
because that's all we have.

We only have
each other out here.

Someone betrays my trust
after I give it to them 100%,

it's gone 100%.

They won't ever get it back.
