feeling of safety in numbers.

people can be beneficial.

whether or not I'm
gonna make it at this rate,

because it's just so
extreme here in every way.

Yeah, there's definitely a
feeling of safety in numbers.

How has your place been?

Kim: I haven't really
eaten since day 7, so...

We have a lot of trees
surrounding the area

where the animals come
to drink, so you could hide.

You guys got big -- lots
of animals over there, too,

like big game?

Jake: Yeah. Yeah, a fair amount.

It's nice. I mean,
it's a beautiful spot.

Oh, we have a fishing net, too.

Oh, nice.

I haven't even actually
seen a fish in our lake.

Jake: Kim and Darrin seem like
they have had a really tough go

the last couple weeks.

Hopefully, we can get
them in an environment

where the possibilities
for food are lot greater

than where they were,

and we're gonna have some
great success as a team together.

You guys got more
people over there,

or it's just you guys now?

It's not -- it's not
a bad trek at all.

We're just on the
other side of that Ridge.

The water's beautiful,
really lush around it.

So, I mean, yeah,

Darrin: My concerns and worries

for the second half
of this challenge

is just finding enough
food for everyone,

especially, you know, the
whole group wants to move,

and I just don't know what
the food resources are.

if we get to a place where
we don't have a lot of food.

Stacey: Anytime you're
eating something out here,

and that upset me.

With just me and Ryan,

you know, there's not gonna
be a middle man anymore.

I think angel definitely had
in purpose being in our group.

military in him and stuff,

but I feel like he needs to tell
people what to do all the time.

It's just gonna build
up and build up,

and then before you know
it, it's gonna be a disaster.

here with just me and Steven,

I have feeling
it's it gonna suck.

there's the sun.

a bigger group

to take care of each other.

Jake: As the groups expand,

the thing is, yes, there's
more helping hands,

but there's also a need
for more resources.

I mean, it's a bit of a gamble,

but to me, it's the only option.

Stacey: I think it's coming.

[ Vomiting ]

Well, that lovely wild cucumber

was either, like, too
strong or too acidic or...

Just one roll of the dice

ate because I was famished...

Tawny: The
bitterness of the fruit

to somebody who has a
completely empty stomach,

So it's absolutely
taught us a lesson.

in the perimeter.

tell the rest of the gang

My first feeling was wow,
like, this place is way greener,

so much more vegetation.

hard time the past two days,

be an adventure.

So, you know, now
that angel's gone,

we were doing one on, two off,

in the marine corps,

I'm very familiar
with fire watch.

It's not just watching the fire.

It's also making sure

that those dangers that are
lurking out around our camp,

don't come in and snatch
us in the middle of the night.

And I just don't know how
much I trust Steven's ability

to, um, stay up for
two hours at a time.

Something could easily come
in and grab one of us by the foot.

A hyena or a big cat
or something like that,

and drag us out like
that, and we'd be gone.

[ Animal howls ]

Woman: I heard something growl.

We are right in the kill zone.

Darrin: Just got to be
super careful down here.

[ Animals bellowing ]

Just kind of sit
here at the door

with a spear pointed outward.

[ Exhales deeply ]

I didn't sleep last night.

Yeah.

That was brutal last night.

Kim: Did you guys
hear the hyenas?

Is that what that
weird noise was?

That weird laugh?

Yeah. Yeah.

I'd say the hyena was
maybe 30, 40 yards last night.

Just feel really
nauseous right now.

All my lymph glands are
really swollen across my neck,

and I just have the shivers.

Throughout the night, I
started feeling way sicker,

and this morning I've
been feeling really sick.

Just the feeling nauseous part

makes it difficult to be
able to get up and help.

Darrin: Half the people in this
camp have tick fever, it seems l

you know, it's like
Russian roulette out here.

Like, eventually, you're
gonna catch the bullet.

Narrator: The South
African bont tick

numbers in the tens of thousands

and Burrows under the skin

of any warm-blooded
animal that brushes past it.

As it sucks blood
from below the skin,

it passes infectious
enzymes into the bloodstream.

Phaedra: Well, the
body aches and stuff,

and tightness in my neck.

You'll -- you'll feel

Jake: A little scary,
to say the least.

It seems like it's working
its way through our group.

This morning alone, I
found more embedded in me.

Three on my penis...
One on my eye.

This feeling like
it's a matter of time.

I haven't gotten tick fever
yet. Ah, I hope I don't.

Narrator: Without
food to strengthen

the unpredictable infection

can linger for days
or even weeks.

Ryan: I'm feeling the effects

of the lack of sleep
from last night.

Woke up a few times

contemplating whether
or not, you know,

can I trust this
person beside me?

And out here, with the
amount of dangers out here,

that's just not good.

So, that mountaintop
right over there

is where I'm headed.

Trying to get a good
view of the north,

see if I can see campfire,

and I'm looking for a sign of
other people camping out here.

I'm wanting more people
for him to connect with

and for me to connect with
so it's not just the two us...

And what do I see?

Something I've been
looking for since day 2.

That's aloe.

The heat out here and the
sun is absolutely excruciating.

So that's gonna feel
so good on my skin.

Narrator: In addition to
soothing burns and cuts,

and helpful enzymes to the body.

So I finally crest the top,

and I'm coming over to
see uncharted territory.

Damn, it's so lush and green
on this side of the mountain.

We've been living
in poverty over there.

And I see camp smoke
from another group right there.

This is one happy
guy right here.

We are making
our trek out of here.

-This is the mountain we're on.

So I went up to here
and looked down.

From the top of here
looking down, right by --

looks like a water
source here --

I could see camp smoke.

Smoke? Okay, cool.

So there's a group.

This is a serious journey.

This is like kind
of a valley area

all the way down this
side of the mountain, right?

So, we're moving.

I get really frustrated
when I feel sick.

Phaedra: As a mother
with a 6-year-old son,

I'm nurturing individual.

So, I don't enjoy
getting help from others.

My last challenge in India,

being sick was probably
the hardest thing to overcome.

-What are you feeling?
-I'm so nauseous.

I just feel sick. It's okay.

I have just so much more
to offer than what I've shown.

I am so much stronger.

And it's not fair

for Jake to have to do
everything all the time.

Jake: Super low energy day.

I'm starting to black
out every time I stand up.

'Cause he's like the

He's the one that gets up

and if fire needs
to be put on the fire,

gets all the water.

He's the one that does
everything, and it's not fair.

Jake: There's definitely

maybe a little bit of
extra pressure today.

Kim and Darrin, they
need some nourishment,

something to fuel their bodies
to be able to hunt and fish.

So it'd be really nice to be
able to give them a meal or two.

Phaedra: It's awesome
having more numbers,

but more numbers mean, you
know, you have to bring in more food,

you have to pull your weight.

At least Kim and Darrin

which makes me

where there might be lions.

Every plant has a Thorn

Pain is weakness
leaving the body.

I can feel it on my

living of off this camp,

We're all sitting by the fire,

and there are so many testicles
flying around in our shelter.

It is our first night
together as a tribe,

so I'm pretty excited.

adjust the shelter today.

thorns, too, you know?

We are getting ready to do
some renovations to our shelter.

We're gonna blow
out this back wall.

It's a nice-sized space,

but we're really
getting cramped.

It would be nice for everybody
to have an equal-sized spot,

sleep equally well.

So we're busting out the wall.

Alyssa: I think
in a bigger group,

one leader is really gonna help.

Jake is our lion pride leader,

and he's got so much experience.

He takes care of everyone.

If you have a y-stick,
you can go for it.

As far as leadership roles go,

I know to me, it's
not that important.

To me, it's more about
success and how we get there.

But there's a lot of
lions in the den now.

I'm about to get a bunch of
real leafy foliage branches

just to kind of put on top.

trying to figure out

what they should be doing,

because there's so
many more people here

and so many more
people, like, working.

And so, there's way
many too many chiefs

and not enough Indians.

this into the shelter

so it's out of the way.

Ryan: In such a large group --
we've got nine people out here.

But out here, when you're
sharing these water sources

with dozens of animals,
elephants and warthogs,

and, you know, their
feces are in there,

and they're bathing in there,

and there's ticks
and mosquitoes,

we're gonna have to a have
a constant cycle of water --

literally have a pot of
boiling water on all the time.

If it's not boiling,

it's off the fire
and it's cooling.

[ Belches ]

[Bleep]

That's not funny.

You drank from that one?

Jake: Oh, my god.
Are you serious?

Phaedra: There is
bacteria in that water

that just could
make you super sick.

The animals, they're
peeing and pooping in there.

[Bleep]

I just drank like a ton of it.

Tawny: Phaedra accidently
drank some water that was uncured,

and it's, you know,
obviously really dangerous.

A medical tap-out
would be devastating.

-I'd go throw up.
-I would throw it up, yeah.

Ryan: Oh, I feel so bad.

I was talking, and didn't even
realize what she was doing.

She's already
had tick-bite fever.

She's already...
Steven: Yeah. Poor girl.

[ Vomiting ]

[ Phaedra vomiting ]

So, phaedra just drank,

um, a bunch of water that
had not been boiled yet.

[ Coughs ]

Alyssa: There's just
a ton of bacteria in it,

so it's potentially
very dangerous.

We got to come up
with a new system.

Woman: "Do not drink,"
like some kind of signal.

Put a stick on it

or tie a piece of grass
around the top maybe.

You know? Something
simple like that.

Darrin: Those lids
played musical lids.

Phaedra: It's not my fault.

Like, that's not how we've
been doing water here.

Every time we get
done boiling water,

we put it on the side, and
that's just how you know.

It's never dirty water
mixed with good water.

And it's being done differently

because, you know, we
have new people in the group.

Yeah, I told, like, every
person when I left here --

I think everybody but
her -- don't touch that.

If I'm sick tonight,
if I've got diarrhea,

then, like, that's -- like,
that's my fate in this.

I hope that she
got it all up, at least.

Ryan: Apparently,
this is one of the spots

where mostly big
game comes down.

I think snaring opportunity's
gonna be much bigger down here

than they were
at my last location.

Being in a big group,
there's so many people.

We need to be able to harvest
that big game and that red meat

or it's not gonna work
out, and people will tap out.

All these, you know, hoof prints

coming down to drink
in this one location.

They're coming down
right through here.

In such a large group,
people can get complacent.

I don't think everyone,

you know, has the
internal drive that I have

and the will of my spirit.

But, I don't know,
sometimes all it takes

is one person to sort of
step up and start moving,

and then other people
will follow the lead.

Jake: Yeah, no. That
placement's perfect.

Alyssa had mentioned

that she had already had
some plans for snaring,

so the two of us are
gonna work together

to set some snares up.

Narrator: To set
the foot snares,

Jake and Alyssa use
paracord and 50-Gauge wire,

two of the group's collective
personal survival items.

It doesn't have
to be super tight.

So, right now, we're
twisting the wire

so that it makes
it a lot stronger.

Instead of just
having one wire here,

when it catches, it
will have two wires.

That just doubles the strength.

And so, I'll just braid it.

They'll walk
through it and be like,

"oh, you know,
this is just so strong

I'm gonna walk through it."

"Just put my little antlers
right through here...

And then panic."

[ Laughter ]

Hey, Jake.

Setting that snare
and blind up there now?

Yeah, we're gonna do a couple.

You should really --
just a piece of advice --

you really should be covering
your feet and your hands

in mud and stuff.

I mean, the snares and the blind

are just gonna have
your scent all over it.

Jake: I'm definitely a
little bit unsure about Ryan.

Right now, with the
way our group works,

I don't feel like it necessarily
needs somebody screaming,

"I'm a leader."

You don't always need one
person telling everybody what to do,

and, yes, he's probably
threatened a little bit by me.

I mean... Ryan:
Everything you touch

is just gonna have
your scent on it.

At least, like, dunk
it all in the water or --

the rope's in mud
-- kind of muddy.

I mean, just saying.
That's what I would do.

Jake: Bitch, please. That
looks pretty [bleep] good.

Darrin: I don't really have a
personal connection to anyone.

But at the same time,

everyone knows I have
the most hunting experience

and the most primitive
survival experience.

So, I definitely feel pressure

to get some food
for these people.

And the animals here are wary.

I mean, there's
lions and leopards

hunting them
nonstop, day and night,

and they know that
they're on the menu here,

and they don't take chances.

There's so many people
here, the game's moving away.

He smelled me.

Ah.

I don't know what they
were gonna do with this.

Set up a whole
nother snare with that

for a nyala or impala.

The group that has
been here the longest

are not the best hunters,

so I took it upon
myself and I set snares

where I felt something
big was gonna come down.

That's like the perfect spot,
the perfect step-down spot.

You got to get
your scent off of it.

Need a couple bigger y's.

It's not gonna get
through this one.

He wants to be the leader.

I know, and that worries me.

Alyssa: I think that
in this group situation,

you can already tell that

And we're all wet and we stink.

So now, I'm laying
in wet, damp hay,

and I was such good sleep.

Every one's wide awake,
trying to stay warm by the fire.

It's hard to sleep when it's
constantly pouring on you.

Um... It's not fun.

Try to keep the fire going,

and that's about all you can do.

This rain storm's really
bringing this challenge

to a whole nother
level of misery.

I just don't know what to do.

and just shiver.

It's a big day.

I mean, 21 days out here.

To know how far we've come
and how far we have to go still,

I feel like all my aches
and stuff are still there,

starting to feel better.

getting over it.

The lack of energy coming in,

there's no plant life.

We're in a severe drought.

All the trees that should've

watching the nyalas.

There's a bunch of
them by our snares.

They're within 5 feet
of our snares right now,

walking on the paths
directly next to it.

And I really hope
that we get one.
