I was five when Mai went nuts
about changing the world.

During summer holiday, dad took her
to the Greenpeace office each day.

I figured all kids imagined
they have to save the whole world.

I took direct action

because I want to stand up to
the things that I find important.

I think it would be plain madness
not to act.

Mai got deeper and deeper into activism.

I just wanted to be a normal,
party-loving teen.

When the activists' videos showed me how
farm animals are treated, I was shocked.

I decided to take part
in the secret filming trips.

My whole circle of friends changed.

All those around me
believed in something

and were willing to do
insane things for the cause.

It felt revolutionary.

None of the truths I had
previously learned mattered anymore.

I haven't been able to leave it behind.

I must've tried dozens of times

to just forget about it all
and ignore those issues.

I can't do it,
but at the same time

I'm not sure if an activist
who runs around filming at night

and whatever...

Was it really me?
Or was I just copying you?

We had a deficit
of 2,000 euros on our account.

We couldn't afford to print a new issue
for the magazine let alone mail it.

After the photos were published,

Justice for Animals
managed to raise 20,000 euros

in just a few days.

I've been involved
with this organisation since 1996,

and these two campaigns,
along with others like them,

have lifted the animal rights movement
to a whole new level.

It's been a lot of hard work.

People have filmed hundreds of farms.

Out of all these people,
two have been brave enough

to have gone public.

Karry and Saila have been prosecuted

for revealing the true nature
of pig farming in Finland.

You said you were afraid
of the consequences.

Were you afraid of entering the farms?
- Sure.

Could you tell us a bit about it?

When you entered a pig farm
for the fist time,

how did that make you feel?

What was it like?

When filming it,
I had to block my thoughts

so it all came to me
only after weeks.

I started realising that they were
all real, individual animals

and we just left them there.

I've had dreams
where the animals ask me why I left

and shut the door behind them.

Play that beautiful music again,
it's so soothing.

12 pig farmers are demanding
180,000 euros as compensations from you.

The prosecution claims
you're guilty of defamation,

In the case of Prosecutor versus
Saila Kivelä and Karry Hedberg,

the court finds Hedberg guilty of
one count of criminal trespassing,

sentencing him
to 20 days of probation.

In the case of the defamation charges,
the court finds

that the filming was an appropriate,
albeit acrimonious, form of criticism.

The accused Kivelä is found not guilty.

What we criticise is that the animals
live in small enclosures for six months

until they are killed.

That is not a good life,

and the reason they're killed
isn't good either.

false allegations thrown at you either.

One farmer even committed suicide
after the last attack.

It's no small matter
to publicly claim

that people are
mistreating their animals.

The scandal only affected the farmers.

It's grotesque how the meat industry,
politicians and officials blame them

and do nothing themselves.

I wasn't really involved in it.

After the elections in 2015,

I worked at an animal welfare
organisation for four years.

The new government didn't mention
animal welfare in their programme at all.

We launched an appeal

for which we got
over 100,000 names.

We also did some lobbying.

We met with various politicians

and wrote a book called
New Animal Welfare Act

which we then sent to every MP.

5,5 million people live in Finland.

Over 85 million terrestrial animals are
killed each year by the animal industry.

How does Mai still believe
she can change the system?

I'm so nervous.

I'm scared that you'll get elected

and have to make some stupid decisions.

When you said you wanted to
stand as an MP, my first thought was

''Why would you want to
give up your activist spirit?''

but it's also very empowering.

when I was an activist at Greenpeace

and then started working
there as an employee.

that I couldn't take part in
the activism and international projects.
