Just as in still photography, an important
principle for composition

is paying attention to tonal contrast
within your frames.

The human eye naturally gravitate
towards the highlights of an image,

so it is important to include
areas of light and dark.

This causes the viewer

to take in the highlight
and then explore the rest of the image.

Taking in the detail, it sets up
the visual dynamism between dark and light

tones.

Contrast is the difference
between the bright and dark

sections of an image
when an image is flat or lacking contrast.

The subject does not have
any visual weight.

Another way to create
compelling imagery and focus the viewer's

attention is through the use
of complementary color pairings.

This can be done through a combination

of background selection
and set design or costuming.

Let's take a look at a quick example.

In this example, we can see

how the color palette of the scene
dictates the focal point.

Blue, green and violet are considered
cool colors.

Color colors convey
feelings of tranquility and detachment.

Warmer colors like red, yellow and orange

are more stimulating
and aggressive colors.

They will tend to pop out in a frame
where cooler

colors recede into the image.

As you conceptualize your project,
you should consider the color

palette of the project and of each scene.

By doing so, you can create a sense of continuity and cohesiveness in your project.
