Creating
an understanding the depth of your frame

is essential to create dynamic composition

and draw the viewer into the world
you are creating.

If used successfully,
it can make a huge difference

in taking your production
to that next cinematic level.

Through that, you are able to create that
three dimensional image on a two

dimensional surface and avoid the cramped
feeling of a flat frame.

One of the best ways to accomplish
this is by including a foreground,

middle ground
and background in each of your frames.

Obviously many shots.

One use these where there is a close up
or detail shot to focus your attention.

But in general this is a good rule
of thumb when adding layers of depth.

It is important to consider
that the motion in the background

is just as important
as the action in the foreground.

When attempting
to establish a specific mode,

if you are filming a chaotic war
scene, for example, you could overwhelm

the audience with visual information
on every depth level

to force the viewer
to experience the cows of the battlefield.

If the background is completely flat
and static, the viewer may experience

a disconnect
and be pulled out of the moment.

Another thing to consider
is that by working with depth,

you can create suspense
or tension within a sequence.

Here we see

a young woman out of breath
running through a forest.

She is clearly terrified
and being chased by someone

or something.

Let's take a look at what we did here

by using a deep shot
at a shallow depth of field.

We created the sense of suspense
as the viewer can see the approach

and figure before the woman can

in certain situations.

You may not want to include
a great level of depth and flat

image can create the sense of a stage
or a diorama that you just might see

in a film adaptation or a theatrical play,
or a Wes Anderson film

that intentionally transforms real world
locations into a serious offsets.
