- I got you a piece of cheese.

- Oh, good.

- Oh, say, guess who I ran
into down at the market.

- Who?

- You remember Mrs. Bradford?

- Mrs. Bradford?

- Yes, they used to live down
the street about 10 years ago.

Remember, she's
president of the PTA?

- Oh, yeah, she's
a very nice lady

who used to make
those burnt brownies.

[audience laughing]

How is she?

- Oh, she's just fine.

They're living back in town now.

She has her niece visiting
her for the weekend.

Well, that's very nice,
but what about it?

- Nothing.

We were just talking about
how she doesn't know anybody

in town, her niece that is,
and might be nice to get

her a date for tonight.

- Well, thank you very much,
but I already have a date.

[audience laughing]

- Not you, old boy.

I thought Rick might
like to take her out.

Well, you'd better
ask him first.

- Well, it's a little
late for that, I think.

- You mean you already
made the date for him?

- Well, in a way, yes.

- Wait a minute, in what way?

- Well, in a rather
definite way.

[audience laughing]

- Harriet, you shouldn't
have done a thing like that.

- You're probably right, but it
was just one of those things.

There wasn't anything
else I could do.

Besides, I'm sure
she's a very nice girl.

- Oh, hi, Rick.

Say, you remember Mrs.
Bradford, the lady

who used to live down at the
corner about 10 years ago?

- You mean the one that always
used to shout at us when

we ran across her lawn?

- No, no, Mrs. Bradford.

She lived on the other
side of the street.

You know, the one who used
to make the burnt brownies.

[audience laughing]

- Oh, yeah, she was the one who
had that skinny niece visiting

her all the time.

- She wasn't so skinny.

- Harriet, why don't
you just tell him?

- Tell me what?

- Well...

Oh, there are those
records you wanted.

Oh, here they are--

Harriet, why don't you tell
him exactly what happened?

- What are you talking about?

- Well, when your mother
was downtown this afternoon,

she happened to run
into Mrs. Bradford

and made a date for
you for tonight.

- With Mrs. Bradford?

[audience laughing]

- No, no, with her skinny niece.

It's Mary Jane
Wheeler, her name is.

- You mean you stuck
me with a blind date?

Well, I wouldn't say stuck.

She's probably a very nice girl,
and you'll have a lot of fun.

Of course, if you
don't want to go,

I could phone up
and call it off.

- Yeah, would you do that, Mom?

Thanks a lot.

- Hey, get back here.

You're not supposed to say that.

- I'd kind of like to get
out of it, if I could.

- Well, it'd leave
me in an awful spot.

- Well, here's an idea.

Maybe you could get somebody
to take Rick's place.

- Well, I guess
that'd be all right,

but how would I explain
it to Mrs. Bradford?

- Well, can't you tell
a little white lie?

All you've got to do is
pad the truth a little.

Say I've just left
for South America.

- Oh, that'd be just dandy.

Well, you could
tell her I was sick.

As a matter of fact, I don't
feel too good right now.

Hey, I really can't go.

I've got to work
on a book report.

It's due Monday.

- This coming Monday?

- Well, three weeks from Monday.

- Well, I'll try and get
you out of it somehow,

but we've got to find somebody
to take your place first.

- Who can I stick
with a blind date?

- Hiya, Rick.
- Oh, here we go.

- Thanks.
Hi, Mr. Nelson, Mrs. Nelson.

- Hey, I was wondering
if you'd do me a favor.

- Sure, anything at all.

- I thought maybe
you and your folks

would like to buy some tickets
to the high school play.

- Gee, I didn't realize
it was coming up so soon.

What's this, Mickey?

- I was just telling
Rick I'm selling tickets

to the high school play.

It's a mystery this year.

It's real frightening.

- Yeah, those
things usually are.

- How about you, Mrs. Nelson?
Would you like to buy a couple?

They're $1 each.

- All right, I'll
take a couple, Mickey.

Wait 'til I get some money.
- Gee, thanks.

- Come on upstairs, Mickey.

I got a couple of records

afraid I'm stuck with a date

In fact, she's a beautiful girl.

Hey, wasn't she that

the end of the term.

she's awful skinny.

She's a big girl now.

- I saw Mrs. Randolph

thinking this thing over,

and I think it would be unfair
to stick you with a blind date.

kind of interesting.

- A skinny little
kid with freckles?

It's personality that counts.

but I can't take
advantage of you.

After all, you're my friend.

- I understand she'll only be in
town for a couple of more days.

I take my chances
on this blind date,

and you do the play with
nothing to worry about.

- My part isn't

hook with Mary Jane.

Well, I shouldn't have
gotten you involved

in the first place, so I
just called Mrs. Bradford

and told her about Mickey's
taking Mary Jane out.

- Oh, gee--

- Don't worry about it.

Mrs. Bradford was
very agreeable.

I gave Mickey a big buildup.

Now everybody's happy.

Everybody except me.

I just talked Mickey into
letting me take her out.

- Well, what'd you do that for?

- I found out what a
beautiful girl she is.

- Well, I told you that.

- Yeah, but I found
out from somebody

who had no ax to grind.
[audience laughing]

- What do you want me to do?

- Would you come in here
and call Mrs. Bradford

and tell her I changed my mind?

- Well, I can't do that.

- Why not?

- Well, I exaggerated a little.

What'd you tell her?

- Well, I just
enlarged upon what

you said, that you might
not be feeling well,

and that you had a
book report to turn in.

Look, if you want to call
her and straighten it out,

the phone number's
right there on the pad.

- I hope you didn't
lay it on too thick.

I told her just what I told you.

- Hello?
[SPEAKING OVER THE PHONE] Hello?

- Hello, Mrs. Bradford?

This is Ricky Nelson.

- Well, hello, dear.

What are you doing out of bed?

- Well, I'm feeling
much better now.

Gee, I thought you
didn't lay it on thick.

- You have to be real
careful with those things.

Sometimes they
hang on for weeks.

- Oh, well, I just
had a mild case.

What did you tell her?

- Well, of course, even if
you are in bed for a while,

give you time to
work on your book.

- My book?

- Good luck, dear.

- Mrs. Bradford, I
wanted to call and talk

to you about tonight.

- Don't you worry your
little head about that.

Everything's taken care
of, and Mickey Darby

sounds like a real nice boy.

- Oh, well, yes, he is.

- I was just going to call
him up when you called.

- You were going to
call up the Darby's?

- Yes.

Now, Ricky, you take real
good care of yourself.

[SPEAKING OVER THE

My telephone's ringing.
- Oh, I'll get it.

[SPEAKING OVER THE PHONE] Hello,
is this the Darby residence?

- Yes, it is.

[SPEAKING OVER THE PHONE] I'd
like to speak to Mickey Darby,

- Speaking.

Hey, David, have you
seen my hairbrush?

- Yeah, it's right
there in front of you.

- Oh.

- Sun went down two hours ago.

Why don't you take
those things off?

- I just put them on.

- If that's supposed
to be a disguise,

you look pretty conspicuous.

You don't think that's
going to stop Mrs. Bradford

from recognizing you, do you?

- Well, how about these?

They're Pop's reading glasses.

- Yeah, congratulations, you
look like a different guy.

[audience laughing]

You better not wear
those things if you're

going to drive or shake
hands with anybody.

- I don't see how Pop
can see through 'em.

- Well, if you wear
them long enough,

your eyes get bad enough
so you have to use them.

- Give me your honest opinion.

Do you think I'll be able to
get away with being Mickey?

- Well, you may, but you
got to watch yourself.

For one thing, you won't be able
to take the girl to the play.

- Why not?

- Well, Mickey's in the play,
and his name's in the program,

and you're using his name.

- I never thought about that.

- You got to start
thinking from now on.

Maybe too much
for you to handle.

- Well, I can handle
a girl all right.

I'm worried about.

After all, she knew me when
I was a baby and Mickey, too.

I wouldn't have conned you

- Well, it makes sense
the way you say it,

so there must be
some catch to it.

- Wonderful.

- Hello.

And you know Mickey Darby.

- Mickey Darby?

- You know Mickey.

- Oh.

Hiya, Mickey.

- We stopped by your
house, and I saw Ricky.

My, he certainly has filled out.

- He sure has, Mrs. Nelson.

He's filled out almost
as much as David.

- Gee, Mickey, if you're
going to be in the play,

- That's right.

Well, I know he had a flat
tire, but I thought he fixed it.

- He's right at the
beginning of the play, too.

You know, if he doesn't show
up, we don't have a corpse.

I wonder if Rodgers
and Hammerstein

have these kind of problems.

- Gee, why don't
I take his place?

- Do you think you could?

- Well, he doesn't have
any lines, does he?

- No, see, this is
supposed to be a closet.

All you have to do is, when
you hear the gun go off,

you fall out dead.
- I think I can handle that.

- Fine.

Dreadful things are
happening over here.

I must talk softly, lest
someone overhear me.

- Has the curtain gone up yet?

Yeah, where you been?

Everybody's been looking
all over for you.

- I had a flat tire.
Where's my costume?

- It's right there.
Gee, hurry up.

Get back in the closet.

- I can't go over there.

The audience will see me.

- Well, here, get in this one.

- Let me tell you, Lucille,
the master is furious.

I fear for me very life.

He threatened to shoot
Mr. Pennington on sight.

Good gracious, I think
I hear the master now.

[applause]

- No, no, Froghorn, I
tell you he's not here.

[sniffing the air]

- Does our downstairs
maid use Bayram?

- Well...

Then he's in that closet.

Come out, Pennington,
or I'll shoot.

I'm warning you, I'm the
best shot in Devonshire.

- No, no!

- This is your last chance.

[gunshot]

the play immensely.

I still think the best part
was the first act where they

got two boys with one bullet.

- Well, Ricky was the corpse
that fell out of the left-hand

closet, and Mickey was
the corpse that fell out

of the right.

- Oh, we loved it!

- It's very good.

- It's real funny.

- It was wonderful, Rick.

of the other closet.

- I had to explain

Well, to tell you the truth,
Mom, I'm glad you did.

I was going to
explain it myself,

but I couldn't figure out how.

- Well, it was easy.

When the Marster
fired that shot,

he got two birds
with one bullet.

[audience laughing]

- Gee, I'm sorry, Mary Jane.

I wasn't trying to put
anything over on you,

but if Mom explained it to
you, I'm sure you understand.

- Of course, I do.

- To tell you the truth, it
was getting pretty confusing

to have you call me
Mickey all the time.

- To tell you the

pretty confusing to have you
call me Mary Jane all the time.

- What?

It seems Mary Jane
isn't Mary Jane at all.

You're not?

- No, you see, Mary Jane phoned
and said she couldn't come down

this weekend, and since your
mother went to so much trouble

getting her date, I just
didn't have the heart

to disappoint her.

So I asked Barbara here if she'd
mind taking Mary Jane's place.

- I'm Mary Jane's sister.

Boy, would she be surprised.

She thought you were
still a skinny little kid

with freckles.
[audience laughing]

- How about that?
This is confusing.

Yes, it is.

Frankly, sometimes, I just
don't understand you teenagers.

- That's all right,
Mrs. Bradford.

Sometimes, we teenagers just
don't understand you grownups.

[audience laughing]

- Well, shall we go?
