I just wondered if you'd mind
taking over my boys club duty

for me tomorrow.

- Boys club?

- Yeah, the one the
men's club sponsors.

- Well, I didn't know we
sponsored a boys club.

- Oh, for goodness sake,
Oz, where have you been?

We've been taking the boys
out someplace every Saturday.

- Oh, well, gee, I've missed
the last couple of meetings.

Where do you usually take ''em?

- Oh, all sorts of places--
hiking, camping out,

mountain climbing.
How about it, Oz?

You take over for me
tomorrow, and I'll

take your turn when it comes.

- Well, where would
I have to take them?

- To a movie down
at the Reveille.

- Oh, what's playing there?

- A real good Western.

I understand there are a couple
of pretty good gunfights in it.

- Oh.

OK, Doc.
I'll do it for you.

- Thanks a lot, Oz.

I knew you were the rootin'
tootin' shoot-'em-up kind.

- Say, you haven't seen my
newspaper anyplace, have you?

- Oh, yeah, the boy
threw it in the driveway.

I was just bringing it to you.

- Oh, stealing papers now.

[laughter]

- Thanks a lot.

Hey, did you guys know
that the men's club

sponsors a boys club?

- Oh, sure, that's been going
on for a couple of years,

hasn't it?
- Well, evidently it has.

I guess I just haven't
heard about it.

- Who was that?

- Dave and Rick.

- No, I mean outside.

- Oh, Doc Williams.

Hey, did you know
about the boys club?

- You mean the one that's
sponsored by the men's club?

- Yeah.

[laughter]

- Well, anyway, I'm taking
the kids out tomorrow.

I just traded my turn with Doc.

- Since when did
you have a turn?

- Well, evidently everybody's
supposed to have a turn.

The point is Doc just
handed me a real easy job.

All I have to do is take the
kids to a movie tomorrow.

- Tomorrow?

- Yeah.

Well, there's nothing
hard about that.

I could have ended up going on
a 10 mile hike or something.

I can't understand why
you'd want to trade off

such an easy assignment.

- Well, I can.

- Hey, look at this!

"Chamber of Commerce Holds
Annual Golf Tournament

Tomorrow."

- That's what I mean.

You said a couple of
weeks ago you thought

you might win it this year.

- Well, that's the dirtiest
trick I ever heard of.

Just because he wants to
play in the tournament

is no excuse to pawn his
responsibilities off on me!

Wait a minute.

I got an idea.

- What you going can do?

- The same thing as he did--

pawn the kids off
on somebody else.

[laughter]

- Hi, good to see you.

Sit down.

- Thanks, I can
just stay a minute.

I came over to ask a
little favor of you.

- Sure, anything.

- Well, you're going to take
the kids from the boys club

out a week from
tomorrow, aren't you?

- Yeah, why?

- Well, I'm supposed to take
them to the movies tomorrow.

- [chuckles]

- What's so funny?

- Did Joe Randolph palm
that movie deal up on you?

- Well, no.

I got it from Doc Williams, why?

- Oh, boy, this is funny.

The last I heard Wally Dibble
palmed it off on Joe Randolph.

It's really making the rounds.

[laughter]

- I'd better sit down.

- And I can't understand it.

That sounds like a
pretty good movie to me.

I'd sure like to see it.

- You really would?

- In fact, if I could talk
to you into trading with me--

- No, no, wait a minute,
that's why I came over here,

I thought maybe if you could
take the kids to the movies

tomorrow, I'd take
your turn next week.

- Oz, that's a deal.

- Oh, gee, thanks a lot, Darb.

- Hey, wait a minute, Ozzie.

Isn't that golf
tournament tomorrow?

- Golf tournament?

Well, now, now, now that you--

- [chuckles] Don't worry.

I decided not to enter
this year anyhow.

- Oh.

[laughter]

- You had me worried
there for a minute.

Well, then you'll definitely
take the kids to the movies

tomorrow, OK?
- That's right.

- Fine.

- And next week you'll take
'em on the 14 mile hike.

- I'll take them
on the 14 mile--

[laughter]

- 14 mile hike.

- With full pack.
[laughter]

- Now, wait a second.

What kind of a
dirty trick is this?

Well, I'll pawn it
off on somebody else.

- Oh, no, you
won't, not a chance.

I tried everybody.

You were my last hope, Oz.

- Oh, gee.

Well, it's worth it to play in
the golf tournament tomorrow.

- It is if it doesn't rain.

- What are you talking about?

There's not a cloud
in the sky tonight.

- That may be, but my
barometer says rain.

- Are you kidding
with that thing?

That's said rain ever since
the day you bought it.

[laughter]

- Well, thanks a lot, Darb.

- Good luck tomorrow.

- Well, I guess I'd
better get going.

- Don't you want your breakfast?

- Well, I've already
had breakfast.

That is all I want, I've
had a cup of hot tea.

You can't play in a golf
tournament on a full stomach.

- I've cleared a place on
the mantel for your trophy.

- Oh.

- Let's see how it's
going to look, Pop.

- Oh, I don't think
it'll be quite that big.

- It will be when
you tell about it.

This is your year.

- Well, I kind of
like to think it is.

It's a handicapped
tournament, you know.

Gee, I can just see that
trophy up there with the name

Nelson inscribed on it.

- Hey, Pop.

It's really going to be tough
playing out there today.

I've never seen it
rain as hard as this.

Oh, that's OK, Dave.

I'm going to take
my raincoat with me.

- Aren't you going to
take your lucky hat?

- Oh, I don't want
to get it wet, Dave.

- I can't understand why they
play golf in weather like this.

- Are you kidding, Harry?

They're not going to call it an
important golf tournament just

because of a little rain.

- Well, it's too bad it
didn't have next Saturday.

Then you wouldn't have to
take the kids on the hike.

- Well, I don't mind taking
them on the hike, as long

as I can play the
tournament today.

kids on a hike next Saturday.

- Gee, that's a shame, Pop.

I'm going to try to

What did he go to
the movies for?

I mean, what did he
leave so early for?

He's taking the kids out to
lunch first, the big showoff.

- That's the way it goes.

- Well, it's pretty obvious
we won't have a trophy

to put up here this year.

- I wouldn't say that.

- Well, don't you have
to play in the tournament

to win the trophy?

- Well, yeah, I'm
going to play in it.

I'll keep phoning
till I find somebody

to take the kids
on the hike for me.

- Well, you got a
nice week for it.

[laughter]

- We'll approach
this systematically.

I'll get somebody
to take my place

if we have to try everybody
in the men's club.

- Yes.

- Well, the week has
sure went by in a hurry.

- Boy, you're not kidding.
I hardly even remember Thursday.

[laughter]

- It's Saturday,
and you'd better

get packed for
your 14 mile hike.

- I'm ready to go right now.

- Oh, I've got some coffee
and sandwiches ready for you.

- Oh, thanks.

- I found a knapsack
and canteen, Pop.

- Oh, thanks a lot, son.

- Here's my scout ax.

Be careful of it.

- Oh, are you kidding, Dave?

I was a Boy Scout
before you were born.

[laughter]

- Oh, and I found this compass.

I thought you might need it.

- Oh, yeah.

Thanks a lot.

I have a pretty good
sense of direction,

but you never can tell when a
compass might come in handy.

- Gee, it's a shame
you're going to have

to miss the golf tournament.

- Yeah, do you realize this will
be the first tournament I've

missed in 15 years?

I've played in every
one since they started.

- Well, you'll just have
to figure you're doing

a nice thing for the boys club.

I guess it'd be too
unfair to the kids

to call a hike off at the
last minute like this, huh?

- Of course, I was talking
to Mrs. Stewart just

the other day, and she
said her little boy's

been looking forward to
it all week, especially

since he found out you
used to be an Eagle Scout.

- Oh, well, there'll be another
golf tournament next year.

- Do you want me to put this
bag in the closet for you, Pop?

- Oh, yeah, would
you please, Rick?

- Hey, here's an idea, Harriet.

Why don't I hike the boys
up through Thatcher's Woods

and then we'll take that
cut off to the right

that leads past the ravine.

And that'll bring us
out right about at the--

- At the golf course.

- Well, no...

[laughter]

- Yes, well, what's
wrong with that?

I mean the boys will have
covered about four or five

miles.

And then if they follow
me around the golf course,

they can add on about
five more miles.

See, that way we kill
two birds with one stone.

[laughter]

- What's wrong with that?

- I just don't think
it would be fair.

- Well, wait a minute, Pop.

I think I know how you
can make this legitimate.

- Well, how's that?

- Well, I know you don't
want to disappoint the kids,

so why don't you hike them
through Thatcher's woods

to the golf course.

Ricky and I can meet
you there and take them

the rest of the way while you're
playing in the golf tournament.

- Hey, hey, well, what
about that Harriet?

- That sounds fine.
- Oh, that's great.

- We'll meet you
at the golf course.

- Oh, thanks a lot.

Gee, that's darn
good thinking, Dave.

- What time are you
supposed to tee off?

- Oh, about noontime.

- We'll meet you there at 11:45.

- OK.

- See you at the golf course.

- 11:45, maybe a little sooner.

- OK, Pop.

- That sure was a
good idea of Dave's.

- It sure was.

Now you can keep your
promise to the kids

and still play in
the tournament.

- Yeah.

Oh, darn it.

- What's the matter?

- Oh, I forgot to put my
golf clubs in the car.

- Well, can't you
take them with you?

- Yeah, there's nothing
much else I can do.

- As a matter of fact,
it might come in handy.

Here, you can carry
your lunch in it

[laughter]

- Oh, yeah, come to think of
it, dust off the mantelpiece.

There'll be a trophy
up there tonight

with "Ozzie Nelson"
inscribed on it.

- Well, see, when you plan
a hike you always figuring

on being at a certain
place at a certain time.

any green rolling hills

with little flags around them?

- You mean like a golf course?

[laughter]

- Yeah, like a golf course.

see anything like that?

- All I've seen it
just plain woods.

- Oh, well.

Let's pick up the pace a little.

- I wonder where Pop is.

He should have been here by now.

- Well, he'll probably be
here in a little while.

- Come on, fellas.

- Gee, do we have
to walk so fast?

- Yeah, but we've got all day.

- Well, keep hurrying

- It's a Darby and Dr.
Williams to the tee, please.

- Your father take the
kids on the hike today?

- Well, that's too bad.

I kind of wanted to
play against him.

I just got a feeling
this is my year.

- You know it's funny,
Pop feels the same way.

[laughter]

- Quiet, gentlemen.

Mr. Darby is teeing off.

[laughter]

- You want to hit
another ball, Darb?

- What do you mean another ball?

That was just a practice shot.
- Oh, wait a minute.

You can't take practice
shots in a tournament.

- Dr. Williams, would
you mind teeing off?

You're holding up
the tournament.

[laughter]

- Boy, that was a beaut.

That must have gone
at least 30 yards.

- Boy, this would have been
duck soup for Pop today.

- Yeah, but where is he?

- Mr. Nelson and Mr.
Randolph to the tee, please.

- That's Randolph.

- Where is Mr. Nelson?

- We're headed East Northeast.

- Well, that's our direction.

We got to follow our direction.

- I'm getting hungry.

- Yeah, you can tell
the sun it's 1:15.

Come on, fellas.

- When are we going to eat?

- Well, gee, don't you guys want
to hurry on a little further?

- Not me, I'm hungry.

- Well, I tell you
what, fellas, we'll

stop a little further
down the trail.

And we'll all eat
half a sandwich.

And then we'll hurry on.

- I got beans and hot dogs.

We'll have to build a fire.

[laughter]

- Look, I'll give you
half of my sandwich.

- Gee, that's no fun going on
a hike and eating sandwiches.

- Yeah, we want
to cook something.

- You can eat
sandwiches at home.

[laughter]

- Well, I'll tell you
what I'll do, boys.

As soon as we get to
a nice big clearing

where it's safe to build a
fire, we'll build a nice fire

and we'll stop and eat.

- Hooray!

- Make sure we get the
fire all out, boys.

- Which way are we going?

- East Northeast, where else?

[laughter]

- Wait a second.

Hold it, fellas.

- Gee, Mr. Nelson, we must
have gone more than 14 miles.

- Well, if we keep
heading East Northeast,

we'll be out of the
woods in no time.

- We've been heading
East Northeast all day.

- These must be long thin woods.

[laughter]

- Are we lost?

- No, no, we're not lost.

Hey.

Somebody's just been
down the clearing there.

Come on, fellas.

See, what did I tell you?

Somebody has been here.

And just a little
while ago, too.

- Hey, here's a knife!

- Hey, that's mine.

I thought I lost it.

- Hey, wait a second.

We're back at the place
where we had lunch.

- Yeah, I guess we are
lost, huh, Mr. Nelson?

[laughter]

- Don't get worried, boys.

We're not exactly lost.

We're just off our
course a little.

Hey, why don't I climb up
to the top of that big tree

there and look around and
kind of get our bearings?

Take your stuff off and
leave it there, boys.

This is an old Indian trick.

[laughter]

- Yes, I guess they should have
been back by now, Mrs. Stewart.

They were just going to
hike near the golf course.

- Hi, Mom.

- Oh, just a second.

Here comes Ricky.

Ricky, where are the boys?
- I don't know.

- Well, where did you
and David leave them?

- We never even saw 'em.

We waited for Pop at the golf
course, but he never showed up.

- That's strange.

Hello, Mrs. Stewart?

No, my son doesn't
know where they are.

But don't worry, my
husband was an Eagle Scout,

so the boys are in good hands.

Nothing can happen to them.

[music playing]

[laughter]

- Gee, are you all
right, Mr. Nelson?

- Yeah, I just--

Oh, hey, hey, I pulled a
muscle on my leg there.

Hey, just give me a hand, boys.

Aw, oof.

[laughter]

- It's no use, boys.

I can't stand up.

- Hey, I got an idea.

Let's make a stretcher.

- Yeah.

- Even if they do
make a stretcher,

way to go, Mr. Nelson?

- Oh, well, we just keep
on going East Northeast.

See, that's-- it's
straight that direction.

- Well, you said East
Northeast was that way.

- He's right, Mr.
Nelson, I heard you.

[laughter]

- Here, Mr. Nelson,
put these on your head,

make yourself comfortable.

- Oh, thank you very much.

Wait a minute.

What's happened to this compass?

Hey, Tony, get me
one of those irons.

- You want a 2 iron or a 3 iron?

[laughter]

- I don't care.

Any one, just hand it to me.

Well, look at-- how
about the-- the compass

has been following the
golf clubs all day.

No wonder we've been
going around in a circle.

[laughter]

- I want you rest here
for a while, boys.

Gee, I'm sorry to cause
you guys all this trouble.

- Heck, Mr. Nelson,
this is a lot of fun.

- Gee, I wish you'd take
us on a hike every week.

- Are you sure we're going
in the right direction?

- Well, I hope so.

[dog barking]

- Hey, look who's here!

- Hey, this must be
the way home, boys.

Follow that dog!

- Hooray!

- Easy does it, boys.

- Here's the newspaper?

- Oh, thanks a lot.

- How's your leg feel?

- It feels pretty good.

Doc did a good job
at taping it up.

He said I'll be good
as new in a few days.

- Well, it's too bad you
had to miss the tournament.

- Yeah, I was so
darn sure this was

the year we'd have the trophy
up there on the mantel.

- It is.

- Holy smokes, Dave.

Where did you get that?
- They just sent it over.

They were having the
name inscribed on it.

- Well, I didn't play
in the tournament.

- Don't worry, Pop.

We came by it honestly.

- Read what it says.

- "Annual Chamber of
Commerce Golf Tournament,

Winner, David Ozzie Nelson."

- Yeah, I had him put
my full name on there.

- You played in the
tournament, Dave?

- Yeah, well, we waited
as long as we could,

and when they kept
calling for Mr. Nelson

and you didn't show up, I
just borrowed a set of clubs

and teed off.

[laughter]

- I think it's wonderful
that you won, Dave.

Congratulations.

- Oh, thanks, Mom.

- Oh, it was easy, Mom.

With Dave's handicap
even you could have won.

[laughter]

- Stop belittling my golf game.

- You fellas must be starved.

I better get dinner.

- Gee, this is just great, Dave.
