- Oh, this is an
industrious little scene.

- I just have a little
more work to do here.

This stuff isn't easy.

- What is it, short division?

- I wish it was.

This is business law.

- Well, there's nothing
difficult about that.

Just use your common sense.

- Don't be such a dope.

You can't use common
sense with this stuff.

You either know it or you don't.

- So this is where
the clan is gathered.

I wondered where
everybody disappeared to.

- You're just in time to
help Dave with his homework.

- Well, what is it, Dave?

- Business law.

- Well, there's nothing
difficult about that.

All you do is use
your common sense.

- What did you say, David?

- Oh, Ricky.

- What seems to be
your problem, son?

- Well, for one thing,
exactly what is a trustee?

- Heck, even I know that.

- OK, what is it?

- You've seen them in
the movies lots of times.

A guy's been put in
jail for a long time,

and they give him a lot
of special privileges

for good behavior and
make him a trustee.

- You'd better get back
to your finger paint.

- Well, no, that was one of the
original meanings of the word.

But lately, it's come
to refer to anybody

who accepts the responsibility
of taking care of something

for somebody else.

- Like, for instance,
a babysitter?

- Well, yeah, in
a general sense.

Anybody who accepts
a responsibility.

- You mean like a
couple of summers

ago, when we took that
trip, and Mr. Thornberry

said he'd drive our car
around every once in a while

so the battery wouldn't go dead?

- Yeah, that's right.

- Of course, we
didn't expect him

to drive it all the way
up to the mountains.

- Well, he didn't mean any harm.

I'll admit he should
have known better than

to park a car on a steep hill
without putting the emergency

brake on.

- Especially next to a lake.

Did the insurance company
ever get the car out?

- Oh, yeah.

In fact, they were
very nice about it.

They just put a rider
on my policy suggesting

in rather strong terms
that Mr. Thornberry not

drive our car anymore.

- Wouldn't you say a homeowner
would be considered a trustee?

- Well, how do you
figure that one out?

- Well, he has a duty to
take care of the place,

like fixing the garage roof
and painting the patio trim

and cleaning out the garage.

- Oh, well, that
refers back more

to what Ricky was talking about.

You see, boys, marriage is
a grand old institution.

And after a man has been
married for a long time,

say about 20 years,
the way I have,

with a record of good
behavior behind him,

sometimes his wife
makes him a trustee.

I'm only kidding, warden.

[music playing]

- Hi, Oz.

- Oh, hi, Thorny.

- Beautiful day, huh?
- Yeah, it sure is.

Looks like it's going to
be a beautiful weekend.

- Yeah.

Going to do some painting?

- Oh, I just
thought I'd touch up

the trim on the patio
roof there a little bit.

And I want to do some
work on the garage, too.

I've been putting it off
for about three weeks.

- Well, I got a little repair
job to do here on the fence.

I guess it's about
time I got at it.

- Yeah, it's sure going
to be a beautiful weekend.

- Yeah.

Say, Oz, when I
finish with the fence,

can I borrow your ladder?

I want to clean out
the rain gutters.

- Oh, sure.

I have to clean out the garage
after I finish my painting.

- I got that on my
agenda, too, right

after I prune the rose bushes.

- Boy, a house sure is a big
responsibility, isn't it?

- Yeah, it sure is.

Seems like I've been spending
all my weekends lately doing

nothing but working
around the house.

- Me, too.

- When was the last time you
took a weekend off or went away

with the family?

- Well, you mean
a whole weekend?

- Yeah, you know,
Saturday and Sunday.

- Oh, let's see,
several months at least.

I guess about the
beginning of the summer.

- Well, it's been at least that
long since I've been away, too.

- Yeah, it's a beautiful day.

- Yeah, looks like it's going
to be a beautiful weekend.

You know, Oz, I remember when
Cath and I were first married,

and we'd wake up on a day
like this, and I'd say,

"Sweetie pie--" this is
when we were first married--

I'd say, "Sweetie
pie, why don't we

just throw some stuff in the
car and go up to Pine Lake?"

And you know, Oz, we'd do it and
just in the spur of the moment,

too.

- Well, why don't you do it now?

- Are you kidding?

With all the things I have to
do around here on the weekend,

why, she'd chase me out
of the house with a broom

if I suggested
anything like that.

- Why don't you try calling
her "sweetie pie" again?

- If I called her
that, I'd have to spend

the rest of the day
trying to convince her

I hadn't done anything wrong.

- Oh, that's not
the right attitude.

If you want to go away,
just pick up and go away.

It's more fun that way.

- What about yourself?

Why don't you, if you
feel so strongly about it?

- You know, that's
a darn good idea.

By golly, Thorny,
I think I will.

Better to tell Harriet
right away so she can

throw a few things in the bag.

Gee, thanks a lot
for the suggestion.

This will be a lot more fun
than working around the house

all weekend.

- Oh, Oz, when you get
down with your painting,

out for a little while?

- Well, I'd like to if I didn't
have so many things to do.

Well, let's just leave,
and let's all go up

to Pine Lake for the weekend.

- Pine Lake?

- Yeah.

- Maybe you've been out
there in the sun too long.

- No, really, I think
it's a good idea.

- Then why don't we do it?

- You see, Harriet, even
the boys want to go.

- Oh, they don't even know
what you're talking about.

- What do you want to do, Pop?

- Well, I thought it'd be
a nice idea if we went up

to Pine Lake for the weekend.

- Which weekend?

- This weekend.
Right now.

- Well, it's kind
of sudden, isn't it?

- Well, sure.

Well, what's wrong
with doing things

on the spur of the moment?

- Gee, Pop, I'm
afraid I can't go.

I have a date tonight.

I promised this girl
I'd take her to a party.

- Oh.

Well, how about you, Dave?

- Well, gee, Pop, I have
an awful lot of stuff

I have to do this afternoon.

- Oh.

- Well, dear, if you
want to go fishing,

why don't you and Thorny go up?

- Oh, gee, that's
no fun, Harriet.

I thought we'd just throw
a few things in a bag,

you know, the whole family
and kind of go up there

on the spur of the moment.

It seemed like a good idea.

- Well, maybe next
weekend, dear.

- Oh, OK, yes.

It probably wasn't a good idea.

I just thought maybe.

- Guess Pop was kind
of disappointed, huh?

- Yes, he seemed like it.

- When did he decide
to go on the trip, Mom?

- I don't know.

Evidently, just a
few minutes ago.

- Doesn't sound much like Pop.

He usually has everything
planned out in advance.

- That's a shame
to disappoint him.

He doesn't ask us to
do things very often.

- Well, I'd go if I could,
but I have this book report

to finish and a whole
lot of other stuff to do.

- I hate to break my date.

Girls don't grow
on trees, you know.

- Well, I wish we
could work things out,

but I have so many things to do.

Oh, I'm sure your
father will understand.

[music playing]

- Hey, Oz!

Gee, Oz, I'm sorry.

I got a little excited.

Now listen to this.

You were absolutely right.

I went to the house, and
I said, "Catherine, how

would you like to go up to
Pine Lake for the weekend?"

And believe it or not,
she said, "Let's go."

How about that?

- Oh, yeah, gee, that's swell.

- So that's pretty good, huh?

A whole weekend of
peace and quiet,

no phones, no responsibilities.

- Well, Oz, get your
fishing clothes.

We'll leave in about an hour.

- Oh, well, Gee,
I'm sorry, Thorny,

but I'm afraid we can't make it.

- Well, didn't you ask Harriet?

- Oh, yeah, I asked
her all right.

But we have a lot of things we
have to do around the house,

and I'm afraid
we'd better not go.

- Oh, that's too bad.

Definitely can't go, huh?

- No, I'm afraid not.

- Well, gee, then maybe Cath
and I can leave a little sooner

and avoid the heavy traffic.

That is, if you do a
couple of favors for us.

- Well, yeah, sure.

What do you want me to do?

- Well, here are the
keys to our house.

Take the clothes out
of the washing machine

and put them in the dryer.

Oh, and my suits are on
the chair in the hall.

Will you give it to the
cleaner when he comes?

Make sure that the
patio door is locked.

And just kind of keep your
eye on the house for us.

Oh, and Oz, have a nice weekend.

- Oh, yes.

- Oz.

- Sorry, Thorny.

- Oh, that's OK, Oz.

It wipes off easily.

- Well, I thought

wanted to go up to Pine Lake?

all the things we have to do?

- Oh, they can wait.

The house will still be
here when we get back.

- Well, what about the boys?

- Well, David says he can finish
his book report up at the lake.

And Ricky canceled his date.

Come on, get your
fishing clothes on.

The fish are calling.

- Hey!

Ohhh!

- What's the matter?

- Well, I just remembered.

Before, when I thought
we weren't going,

I promised Thorny I'd look
after their house for them

while they were up at the lake.

- Oh, well, have they left yet?

- No, I don't think so.

- Well, go over and
tell him you can't.

We're going away, too.

- Hey, there.
Wait up.

Thorny!

- Not under the ladder.

- Here, take the brush.

- I still say we
ought to go anyway.

- I don't know, Harriet.

- Gee, Pop, I broke
a poor girl's heart

just so I could go.

- Gee, I wish you'd
made up your mind

before I promised Thorny I'd
take care of his house for him.

- I'll tell you what.

Why don't we all go
over to the Thornberrys

and lock up the house
as tight as a drum.

And then you can go away
with your mind at ease.

- Gee, Harriet, there
are a lot of things

to do before you have
a house all locked up.

- Well, we'll make a list, and
then we won't forget anything.

- You got a paper and pencil?

- Mm-hmm, right here.

- Thanks.

Let's see, I wonder what
we ought to do first?

- Just lock the doors and leave.

- No, Rick, that's
the last thing you do.

I'd say the first thing to do
would be to notify the milkman.

There's a lot of milk
bottles lying around,

are a sure giveaway
that nobody's home.

- Well, the milkman
doesn't come till Monday.

- Oh.

Well, next thing I'd say
would be the newspapers.

You don't want a
lot of newspapers

lying around the lawn.

That's a tip-off, too.

- Well, Mr. Thornberry always
brings home his own newspapers,

Pop.

- Well, next, I'd say
would be the attic.

- What are we going
to do up there?

- Well, we want to make sure
all the windows are shut tight,

in case it rains.

- Well, they're shut tight.

Thorny's never been
able to get 'em open.

- Oh.

Well, next, we go
downstairs to the bedroom,

make sure the electric
blankets are shut off.

- They don't have any.

- Oh?

Well, then we go
into the bathroom,

make sure the faucets
are turned off tight.

- I'll take the hot, and
David can take the cold.

- And then, Harriet,
the kitchen.

- Oh, I'll take
care of the kitchen.

That's my department.

- Kitchen.

Then we ought to
go down to the den,

shut off the
television set, make

sure there are no lighted
cigars in the ashtrays,

make sure the fire is
out in the fireplace.

- I'll empty out the candy dish.

No sense in letting
the candy get stale.

- I don't think you have
to worry about that.

- Well, dear, why don't we
just go over there and shut off

everything that's open and lock
up everything that's unlocked?

- Yeah, that sounds
like an easy solution.

Come on, boys, let's get
the show on the road.

[music playing]

OK, let's check the list.

Cellar door locked?

- Check, Pop.

- Grandfather clock wound?

- Check, Pop.

- Toaster disconnected?

- Check, Pop.

- I locked all the
windows and doors.

- Well, that's good.

Looks like we're all finished.
- Great.

We leave--
- Oh, no, no, no, no.

We can't leave yet.

- I thought you said
we were all finished?

- Well, yes, we are over here.

Now I have to take this
list over to our house

and go through it again.

- I'm getting hungry.

It's almost lunchtime.

- Dear, why don't you
run down the delicatessen

and get us some sandwiches
to eat on the way?

It'll save time.

- But we've still got
to close up our house.

- Well, the boys
and I will do it.

You run along.

- Well, OK.

Anybody want anything special?

- I'll have a ham on rye
with a little mustard

and plenty of
butter, and coleslaw.

- I'd like lean corned beef
on the Swedish rye they have,

potato chips, and
a sliced pickle.

- I'll have a turkey sandwich
with lettuce and tomato

and mayonnaise, a side of
French fries, cranberry sauce,

and a piece of apple pie.

- Well, good
afternoon, Mr. Nelson.

- Good afternoon.

- What can I do for you?

- Four cheese
sandwiches, please.

- Yes, sir.

- Oh, and would you wrap in
a little of this wax paper.

We're going on a trip.
- Oh, that's nice.

Where are you going?

- Up to Pine Lake.

We're kind of rushing around.

We just decided to go
at the last minute.

You know, spur of
the moment stuff.

- Oh, that's the way to do it.

I can remember when
I was first married--

wake up, a beautiful day like
this, say to the wife, "Mary,

how about going away
for the weekend?"

- Oh, yeah, well, of course,
when you're first married,

and you don't have
responsibilities,

you can do things like that.

- Oh, we never went.

What kind of bread you
want these sandwiches on,

Mr. Nelson?

- Well, suppose you put
one on white, one on rye,

one on whole wheat, and
one on pumpernickel.

That way, if anybody
doesn't like cheese,

at least he'll have
a choice of bread.

- Yeah, that's a good idea.

- Are you going away
for the whole weekend?

- Yes, we are.

The Thornberrys
have already left.

They'll be up there
for a couple of days.

- Oh, you shouldn't say
things like that, Mr. Nelson,

at least not so loud.

- Oh?

Why not?

- Well, you never can
tell who's listening.

Somebody overhears
you saying you

and the Thornberrys are going
away, first thing you know,

somebody is breaking
into your house.

We've had an awful
lot of burglaries

around here recently, you know.

- Well, yes, but we've
taken every precaution.

- Well, Mr. Thornberry is
a sensible sort of a man.

I'm sure he locked up
everything good and tight.

- Well, no.

See, actually, he left
his house in my charge.

I locked it up.

- You mean you're
responsible for it?

- Well, I guess I am.

- I don't mean to sound
technical, Mr. Nelson,

but there's nothing
to guess about.

Either you are or you aren't.

- Oh.

Well, I guess I am.

- Mayonnaise, butter,
mustard, or dressing?

- Cranberry sauce.

- On cheese sandwiches?

- Oh, well, maybe you better
not put anything on them.

To be honest with
you, I've forgotten

what the family ordered.

- Yeah, I'm like that
myself sometimes,

especially if I've got a
lot of things on my mind.

Boy, I'm glad nobody asked
me to close up their house.

I'd probably forget
to lock the back door.

- Oh, I'm sure I locked--

Oh, yeah, I'm sure I

- Oh, you probably did.

Of course, there's no reason
why to lock up the back door.

- Well, what do
you mean by that?

- Well, for instance, suppose
fire broke out in the house.

Fire department will have a
heck of a time getting in.

- Well, yeah, but I--

I've been-- I'm sure there's no
danger of a fire breaking out.

- Did you turn off
all the water faucets?

- Oh, yes, real tight.

- That's what a
neighbor of mine did.

He turned off the faucet
in the bathtub real tight.

Somehow it started to leak.

Stopper was in the tub.

Overflowed.

- How about that?

[siren blaring]

- Sounds like a fire somewhere.

- Hey, they're
heading up the hill!

- Mr. Nelson, your sandwiches!

- All right, where's the fire?

- What fire?

- Well, didn't you
hear the fire sirens?

- No.

Where are the sandwiches?

- Sandwiches?

How can you speak of sandwiches
when somebody's house is--

Boys, where's the fire?

- Fire?

- What fire?

- It isn't Thorny's
house, is it?

- Well, I don't know what
you're talking about, Pop.

- Well, didn't you
hear any sirens?

- Well, I didn't.

- Neither did I.

- Gee, I'm sorry.

I guess I was mistaken.

I could have sworn
that the fire--

Well, see, it's just as I
said last night, Harriet.

When you accept
a responsibility,

you've got to see it through.

I told Thorny I'd
watch his house,

and I've just got to stay
here and watch his house.

I'm awful sorry.

I'm sorry, fellas.

- Well, it's up to you, dear.

- Well, yeah, I think so.

We can go up to the
lake some other time.

See, it's just as David was
studying about last night.

If you accept a
responsibility, that

makes you a trustee of somebody
else's personal property.

And I'm a trustee
of Thorny's house.

- Well, OK.

- What are you talking

- If you did your own homework,

Thornberry next door.

- Oh, ha ha!

the field glasses.

See, I'm responsible for
the Thornberrys' house

while they're away
for the weekend.

- Well, good for you.

Give him this telegram when
you see him, will you, please?

- Oh.

- Oh, here's an
added complication,

a telegram for Thorny.

- Well, open it up and read it.

- No, it's for Mr. Thornberry.

It's a federal offense to
open somebody else's mail.

- Why don't you phone
him up at the lake?

- No, I can't do that.

They don't have any
phones up there, Dave.

- Well, dear, why don't
we drive up to the lake

and give it to him.

After all, Thorny's got burglary
insurance and fire insurance.

- Oh, I don't know.

- Oh, come on, dear.

- Oh, come on, dear.

- Come on, dear.

[music playing]

- I think we turn right here.

- No, I-- I think we turn left.

Yeah, it's a left.

I'm sure.

- OK.

[music playing]

- This is it, Pop.

- Is that what the man
said, number eight?

- That's right.

- Hi, Harriet.

Oz.
[interposing voices]

Hi, boys.
- Where's Catherine?

- Well, she's out on the
lake fishing with Will.

What are you doing up here?

- Well, I hope you
appreciate this,

but we drove all the way up
here to bring you this telegram.

- Telegram?

- Yeah.

See, this guy delivered
it to your house

and I thought possibly it
might be something important.

So we brought it up here.

- Hey, wait a minute.

What kind of a gag is this?

- What do you mean?

It's no gag.

- Well, read it yourself.

- "Dear Thorny.

Sorry, can't watch your house.

Am going up to the
lake with family.

Signed, Ozzie."

Well, I didn't send this at all!

- Well, that's your signature.

- Well, there's no signature.

It's just printed.

Who could have done
a thing like this?

- Almost anybody who wanted
to come up to the lake, dear.

- Well, Harriet,
do you realize it's

forgery to sign
somebody else's name?

- Well, yes, and I
thought about that,

but since there aren't
any telephones up here,

I guess you'll just have to
wait until Monday morning

to turn me over to the police.

- Don't just stand there, Oz.

Get your fishing clothes on.
- See you in 10 minutes, Thorny.

We've got the next cabin.
- OK.

- You mean we're going to stay?
- Well, sure.

You don't suppose we drove
all the way up here just

to deliver a telegram, do you?

- What about our clothes
and fishing equipment?

- Yeah, what about that?

- Oh, gee, I forgot about that.

- Well, fortunately, I didn't.

The stuff's in the
back of the car, boys.

Ha ha!

- Oh, good morning, Thorny.

- Beautiful day, huh?

- Yeah, it looks
like it's going to be

another beautiful weekend.

- Well, we sure had a lot of
fun last weekend, didn't we?

- Yeah.

Oh, that Pine Lake
is really great.

- Yeah.

You going to do a
little painting?

- Oh, yeah, I thought I'd finish
up the trim on the roof there.

And I want to get at
the garage this weekend.

- Well, and I got
this fence to fix.

Then I've got those

And I think I'll clean

- Yeah, I want to fix up those
shingles, too, while I'm at it.

- Mr. Nelson?

- I have a telegram for you.

- Well, thanks a lot.

- Are you Mr. Thornberry?
- Yes, I am.

- Thanks.

- "Stop talking and get to work.
