See, when I was a small boy--

was a small peanut--

I mean, once when
I was a small boy,

my father took me
to the ball game.

I ate so darn many
peanuts that afternoon

and I just never felt quite
the same about them since.

The same thing happened to me.

eating them now?

- Well, I don't mean it
happened to me with peanuts.

It was ice cream.

You see, when I was a boy--
- No, no, wait a minute.

This sounds like it's
going to be a long story.

I think I'll sit down.

- When I was a kid, Oz, I
used to work after school

in this ice cream parlor
and I ate so much ice cream,

I got so I couldn't
stand the sight of it.

- Well, you know,
it's a funny thing,

but recently Ricky
hasn't been able to stand

the sight of food of any sort.

- Really?

- Yeah, he comes
home at night and he

just picks at his dinner, hardly
eats any breakfast at all.

- Hmm.

I can understand
about the dinner,

but I didn't think the drugstore
was open before breakfast.

- What's the drugstore
got to do with it?

- Well, I hate to
be a tattletale, Oz,

but I've seen him over at
Miller's drugstore practically

every day for the past week.

- Doing what?

- Well, probably be filling up
on milkshakes or double-whipped

cream sundaes.

- Well, no wonder he doesn't
eat any food at home.

Gee, I'll have to do something
about that right away.

- Oh, now wait a minute, Oz.

You know the story you just told
me about eating all the peanuts

and you couldn't eat anymore?

- Yeah, and you
with the ice cream.

- Yeah, well, why don't
you do the same with him?

Let him have a free hand.

Let him eat himself right
into an ice cream stupor.

- Hey, that's an idea.

And after a few days of
stuffing himself with ice cream,

he won't be able to look
at in the face anymore.

- Sure, that's what
happened to me.

Of course, it took me two weeks.

I was a tough case.

- Yeah, I think this
will solve our problem.

- Sure it will, Oz.

And it will certainly help me.

Well, this afternoon,
I went there

to enjoy a nice dish of
Tutti Frutti ice cream

and it was all gone.

Ricky had probably been
there and eaten it all.

- Well, now wait a
minute, I thought you

didn't like ice cream anymore.

- I got over that, Oz.

Although it did take
me quite a while...

About 48 hours, as I recall.

- I might have known.

I think I will have a
couple of those peanuts.

- Wait a minute.

I thought you told me you
couldn't stand peanuts.

- Well, I just noticed
those are shelled.

See, I don't like
the taste of them,

but I can't stand the noise
of the cracking of the shells.

- Hi.

- Think I have some good news.
- Well, fine.

What is it?

- Well, I think I know
why Ricky hasn't been

eating any food here at home.

The answer is
surprisingly simple.

In fact, it's practically
under our noses.

- If you're going to
tell me it's my cooking,

so help me, "Pow,
right in the kisser."

- No, no, it isn't anything
as drastic as that.

It seems that Thorny is
seeing him down the drugstore

practically every afternoon
this week stuffing himself

with ice cream and all
sorts of sweet things.

- Well, no wonder
he couldn't eat.

At least I'm glad to know
there's nothing wrong with him,

not to mention my cooking.

- Oh, well, I
think we'll get him

off the ice cream in no time.
- Well, you bet we will.

You wait till I see him,
I'll tell him a thing or two.

- Oh, no, no, no, wait
a minute, Harriet.

I think we have to
handle him delicately.

- Well, of course we do.

With all that ice cream inside
of him, he's liable to explode.

- No, uh, Thorny and I have
a little plan that we think

will work out swell.

- Oh, what's that?

- Well, when I was a
small boy, my father

that I couldn't stand the

- Oh, Ricky loves peanuts.

loves ice cream, too.

So we just let him eat all
the ice cream he wants.

And in fact, we even
encourage him to eat more.

until finally he can't
stand the sight of it,

all sorts of fancy
concoctions too.

Chocolate sodas,
strawberry floats,

pistachio sundaes with
gooey whipped cream,

butterscotch banana splits
with slices of pineapple all--

- OK, you convinced me.

He'll be cured just
hearing you telling.

- Harriet, we can't tell him.

That would spoil the
psychological effect.

We don't want him
to know that we

know he's eating the ice cream.

- Well, if we
can't tell him, how

are we going to encourage him?

- Say, wait a minute.

I have a wonderful id--

- Hey, we were just
talking about you.

- I hope it was something good.

- Yeah, I think you'll like it.

I think I'll open up a
charge account for you

at Miller's drugstore.

I've got a pretty busy

that's arisen with Ricky,

and I thought we might discuss
it over a hot roast beef

sandwich.

Oz, but I really have
quite a feast here.

Got fried chicken, deviled
eggs, coleslaw, three olives,

and a banana.

- Well, how do you
know what's in the box?

You haven't opened it yet.

- I sneaked a look under the
fluoroscope this morning.

- Well, I'll see ya.

- No, no, come on now, Oz.

What's this problem with Ricky?

- Well, I'll make this
as brief as possible.

Ricky hasn't been eating
his meals recently,

and I figured the
reason for this

is because he stops off at
Miller's drugstore practically

every afternoon and
fills up on ice cream.

So I figured the best
treatment for that

would be to make sure he eats
so darn much ice cream that he

gets sick and tired of it.

- Just how do you go
about doing that, doctor?

I mean--

- Well, see, we opened a charge
account at Miller's, so now

Rick can go down there
and buy as much ice cream

as he wants without
paying for it

and just fill up to
his heart's content.

Now, my question
is, do you think

there might be any harmful
results from eating so much ice

cream?

- Well, he could wind
up with a very bad case

of frozen tonsils.

Other than that, I agree
with the treatment.

- Oh, gee, thanks.

the best beef stew

I've ever tasted in my life.

- Maybe he'd like to have
something else for dinner

We haven't had beef
stew in a long while.

- We had it last week.

- Well, a week is quite a while.

- In fact, it was more
like five days ago.

- Well, as far as
I'm concerned, you

can have it every
night in the week.

I love your beef stew.

- You know, come to think of it,
Ricky hardly ate a bite of it.

- Well, Harriet, we know
what's wrong with Ricky.

He stops off at the drugstore

Tonight, I'm going to broil the
best steaks you've ever tasted.

thinking about Ricky.

He didn't eat much dinner

You see this first item,

I guess David decided to take
advantage of the charge account

- Well, it is rather convenient.

- Oh, yes, so I see.

It says here, "Two chocolate
malts for Mrs. Ozzie Nelson."

- Well, since we've
got a charge account,

I didn't see any
harm in using it.

- No, no, no, no, that's
perfectly all right, dear.

- Let me see the bill.

I want to see how
much Rick spent.

- No, he didn't spent too much,
a surprisingly small amount,

in fact.

- Well, exactly what do
you call a small amount?

- Well, it says here he
only ran up a bill of $0.40.

- $0.40?

Well, if Ricky only spent $0.40,
and David had two sundaes,

and I had two chocolate malts,
how do we owe Mr. Miller $8.50?

- Oh, remember,
Harriet, I told you

I opened up this charge
account for the entire family.

And from time to time, I stopped
in and had a dish of ice cream

myself.

In fact, I had a dish
just this afternoon.

- Just a dish of ice cream?

- Well, I guess you'd probably
call it more like a bowl.

- A rather large bowl?

- Well, large enough
to hold six scoops

of ice cream and a banana
and a few strawberries

and some pineapple and a little
chocolate syrup and a dab

of whipped cream and a cherry.

It's very good.

- It must be.

- Funny thing about
this particular dish,

sometimes the second one tastes
even better than the first.

- How's the third one taste?

- Oh, Harriet, you don't think
I could eat three of those.

- Then you only had two?

- Uh, uh, 2 and 1/2.

Thorny and I split
the third one.

- Oh, that explains why
we owe Mr. Miller $8.50,

but what about Ricky?

- Yeah, I was just
about to mention that.

According to this, he spent
less at the drug store than any

of us, only $0.40.

- And what was that for?

- Uh, sodas.

- Chocolate?

- No, bicarbonate.

Why would Ricky be buying
bicarbonate of soda?

- I think I'd better
get a new cookbook.

- Maybe I ought to
call Dr. Williams

and have him take
a look at Rick.

- Do you think he could be sick?

- Well, after all, he hasn't
been eating much ice cream

and he still isn't eating
his food here at home.

- Oh, well, your mother

stuck on this girl.

He waits for her every day
after school, but don't tell him

to somebody special?

- No, just a girl.

Hey, Mom, do you still have

not too much trouble.

- Well, still on your plate,

ex-girlfriend of mine.

She's my girlfriend

but she's ex tonight.

- Oh, gee, I'm
sorry to hear that.

- Oh, she'll get over it.

She's a progressive type girl.

- You mean you
broke up with her?

- Yeah, I had to.

That waiting for her after
cooking class every day

was just getting to be too much.

- Well, I don't see what's so
difficult about that, waiting

a little while for
girl after school.

- Oh, the waiting
didn't hurt me,

but having to eat
her cooking she did.

- Stuff she cooked
in cooking class.

All she knew how to
make was beef stew

and she didn't
make that too well.

- You mean, she used
you as a guinea pig?

- Yeah, golly, it got so bad
I had to stop by the drugstore

and get bicarbonate of
soda every afternoon.

- Oh, well, maybe
it's a good idea

you did call off this romance.

- Yeah, I think so.

She's really a swell girl.

And I wrote her a letter
explaining the whole thing.

Besides, I sent
her a phone number

of a guy who ought to make
her a great boyfriend.

They ought to get along fine.

Besides, I'm going to give her
mom's recipe for beef stew.

- Well, that should
make her feel better.

now.
