his lovely wife, Harriet,

The older of the Nelson boys,
David, appears as David Nelson;

and his younger brother,
the irrepressible Ricky,

played by Ricky Nelson.

The Nelsons' next-door
neighbor, Thorny,

- How many boys are going
with you tomorrow, Rick?

- Oh, there's going to
be about five of us.

They're all from
my class at school.

- You're not going
too far, are you?

- Oh, no, just up
to Thatcher's Woods.

- Well, you be careful.

- Oh, sure.

Is it OK if we all meet
here in the morning?

- Well, certainly.

You know the boys are always
welcome here any time.

- I just want to make sure.

Iggy Schwartz's now.

- Boy, that guy eats the

tonight with Susan,

but I don't know where
we're going to go.

I'd like it to be
something special,

but unfortunately my financial
condition won't allow it.

and spend money.

I remember when I was
going out on dates, lots

of times I didn't have any
money and we just kind of sit

around the house and do nothing.

- Yeah, I remember that, too.

- Well, heck, no, Mom.
What is it?

- Well, why don't you
invite Susan to have dinner

here with us tonight?

- I never thought of that.

I wouldn't want you to
go to too much trouble.

- Oh, wouldn't be
any trouble at all.

- No, we'd just all sit
down here and have dinner.

Of course, we'd have
to cook dinner first.

That is, your mother would.

I don't think it'd be too much
trouble, would it, Harriet?

- No, really, it'd
be fine, Dave.

- You sure?

- Mhm, positive.

- I wonder how Susan
would like that.

I mean, it's sort of different.

You don't think she'd figure
I was getting too serious,

- Oh, I don't think so.

I'm sure she'd like the idea.

I remember how pleased I was the
first time your father asked me

to have dinner over
at Grandma Nelson's.

- Yeah, I remember that.

- Well, how about it?

It's kind of special and
won't cost you anything.

- And your mother's dying
to get Susan cornered.

- Naturally.

I like to know all the
girls David goes out with.

- Well, Susan's
a real nice girl.

- Oh, I'm sure she is.

Then it's all settled?

You'll have her over
here for dinner?

- Well, sure.

If you promise not to
go to too much trouble.

- Oh, I promise.

I'll enjoy it.

- I mean, I think Susan will
feel more relaxed if we just

kept it simple.

You know, just have an ordinary
dinner like we always do.

- Well, of course I did.

It's always very flattering for
a girl to be invited to dinner.

girl you used to room with?

Boy, I bought her as many
dinners as I bought you.

- Well, she was
always good company.

- She had a good healthy
appetite, I remember that.

It wasn't that bad.

- Are you kidding?

We practically never
had dinner alone

till after we were married.

- Aren't you a little
confused there?

You mean we've practically
never been out to dinner alone

since we've been married.

No, I mean it.

I think I'm due for a
nice, formal evening.

Why don't you take me
out to dinner sometime?

- Susan thought it
was a swell idea.

I told her about 7 o'clock.
Is that all right?

- Oh, fine.

Well, I'd better
get to the market

just as soon as
we've finished here.

- Oh, now remember, Mom,
just a simple dinner.

Nothing fancy.

Just plain, home-cooked meal.

- Oh, well, what did you want?

- Uh, what were we
going to have anyway?

- Corned beef hash.

- Oh, that's fine.

Or steak or anything like that.

- Hi, Oz.

- Hiya, Thorny.

I wonder who was
prodding me on there.

- Sorry, old boy, but
you're double-parked.

- Yeah, I guess I am at that.

Boy, I'm glad this is
usually Harriet's chore.

I'm just no good at
this sort of thing.

- Yeah?

Where is Harriet?

- Uh, she went across the
street to do a little shopping.

The drugstore, I think.

- Hey, steaks!

Boy, oh, boy, Oz,
what's the occasion?

And what time do
you want us there?

- Uh, Dave has invited
a little girlfriend

of his over to our house
for dinner tonight.

- Hmm, pretty fancy.

Going to do it on
big style, huh?

- Uh, no.

On the contrary, he wants
us to keep it very simple.

Just an informal little
home-cooked meal.

We don't want to
embarrass the kid.

- Well, no.

On the other hand, you
don't want to embarrass

the girl either or yourselves.

- What do you mean by that?

- Well, my boy Will invited his
girlfriend over to our house

for a little informal
dinner, and she came

dressed for the coronation.

Poor Catherine was wearing
a cotton house dress.

- Yeah, well, I can see
where a thing like that

would be pretty embarrassing.

- Yeah, especially since she
was the one that wanted to get

dolled up in the first place.

I was the one that suggested
the informal attire.

- Well, I'm sure Dave
knows what he's doing.

The kids he goes around with
are all pretty informal.

- Well, even if it does
get a little mixed up,

you can always turn
the thing into a gag.

I know we got a lot of
laughs out of my sweatshirt

at Doc Williams's
party the other night.

- [chuckles] You mean to say you
wore a sweatshirt over to Doc

Williams's house?

- Sure, why not?

When somebody says
"informal" to me,

I always take him at his word.

- Of course, I'm
not exactly going

to be striving for
laughs tonight.

After all, we haven't
met this little girl yet.

Wouldn't want an
embarrassing situation.

- Oh, Oz, I don't know what
you're worried about anyway.

Just wear your tuxedo and
you're always properly dressed

after 6 o'clock.

- Well, I wasn't
worried about anything

until I bumped into you.

- Me?

What did I do?

I'm not even invited
to this thing.

And come to think of it, I ought
to feel pretty hurt about that.

- Well, a-- oh.

I'm sure the girl's not
going to get all gussied up

to come over to our house to
a simple little family dinner.

- Well, I wouldn't be
too sure about that, Oz.

Kids nowadays are
pretty unpredictable.

- Oh, there you are.

I thought I'd find you
over at the free samples.

I just saw David's girlfriend
going into the beauty

shop across the street.

- Uh oh.

- Oh, Thorny, what are
you uh oh'ing about?

Can't the girl
get her hair done?

- Sure, sure.

Well, maybe you'd better throw
in a little caviar and perhaps

some imported cheese.

- Well, what's this all about?

- Thorny's got some
silly idea there's

liable to be a misunderstanding
at dinner tonight.

- Well, in what way?

- Well, he thinks maybe Susan
will show up all decked out,

expecting it's a formal affair.

- Susan?
Wait a minute.

You don't mean Susan Van Skyler?
- Yes.

Do you know her?

- Yeah, and I'm not
kidding now, Oz.

Maybe you're not giving
a formal dinner party,

but Susan's sure getting
ready to go to one.

- Well, what makes you say that?

- Well, Catherine and I saw
them at the emporium about half

an hour ago, Susan
and her mother.

She was buying a
new dinner dress.

- Well, maybe it
wasn't for tonight.

- Well, that's possible.

- Of course, on the
other hand, maybe it was.

It sure fits in with
that beauty shop routine.

- Oh, you're lucky
you ran into me, Oz.

- Well, I guess that's
one way of looking at it.

- Harriet, which way
to the free samples?

- Right over there.

- Thanks.

- Oh, uh, how much is
this caviar, please?

The whole thing was
probably just a coincidence.

You know Thorny.

He likes to make a big
deal out of everything.

After all, David said to
keep everything simple.

He wants the girl to
see us as we really are.

You know what I mean.

- Then how come you
bought that caviar?

- You know, that's
a good question.

I don't care for
this stuff myself.

It always reminds
me of salted BBs.

These steaks sure
look good, don't they?

- They certainly do.

You are going to wear your coat
to dinner tonight, aren't you?

- Well, do I usually
wear my coat to dinner?

- Well, no.

- Well, then there's no reason
for me to wear it tonight.

Well, I tell you what I'll do.

I'll hang it on the
back of my chair, see.

Then in case I want to slip
it on, it's, uh, handy.

Oh, maybe I may wear
my coat tonight.

I often wear it on cold nights.

Harriet?

What are you doing?

- I was just looking to see
if our silver needs polishing.

- Oh.

Come on now, dear.

It's not going to be
as formal as all that.

Our everyday stuff is
plenty good enough.

- I suppose.

But these knives are sharper.

- Well, yeah, that's
a beautiful set, too.

Uh, maybe it would be a good
idea to get some use out of it.

Wait a minute.

- What's the matter?

- As long as we're going
to use our good silver,

why don't we use these?

- Oh, now you're
really getting formal.

- No, no, not necessarily.

If I was going to get real
formal, I'd wear my tuxedo.

Uh, is my tuxedo pressed?

- Honestly, dear,
I don't think Susan

expects us to get that fancy.

People just don't dress for
dinner the way they used to.

It would be nice for
a change, though.

- Yeah, I think so.

Beside, it's our duty to set
a good example for the kids.

- I have to sew a snap
on my evening dress.

- Well, that'll just
take a couple of minutes.

It sounds like a good idea.

It might be fun.

Only thing, I wonder
what Dave's going to say.

- Oh, David will be delighted.

Kids hate to admit it, but
they like to have their parents

dignified.

- Yeah, I think so.

acquaintance, Ms. Van Skyler.

- Oh, how do you do, Mr. Nelson?

- David has told us so
much about you, my dear.

Uh, would Mr. Nelson care
to help polish the silver?

- Hiya, Mom, Pop.

- This is all the guys.

- Oh, this is Paul's
little brother, George.

- He's coming along
as sort of a mascot.

- How do you do, George?

- I figured we could get an
earlier start in the morning

if all the guys
stayed here overnight.

I told them you said
they're always welcome.

- Boy, we're sure lucky.

I've heard you're a
swell cook, Mrs. Nelson.

- Thank you, George.
- Come on you guys.

You can leave all your
stuff out in the hall.

That'll be eight
extra for dinner, Mom.

- I wonder if we have any
formal hunting knives.

Boy, it's sure going to be
confusing, Ricky and his range

riders in the midst
of a formal dinner.

- Well, we can't
tell them to go home.

After all, Ricky's
friends are welcome, too.

- Yeah, but you must admit it's
going to be a mixed gathering.

- Say, maybe we could
stagger the dinner.

Ricky and the boys
could eat first,

and then you and I could
eat with David and Susan.

- Oh, I think that would be
more confusing and possibly

embarrassing to everybody.

- I guess you're right,
especially since I just

finished telling Ricky that
his friends are always welcome,

which, of course, they are.

- Except perhaps tonight.

Say, I have an idea.

Rick and his gang
are all set for kind

of a rough and ready
weekend anyway.

Why don't we let them
have a barbecue here?

- Oh, say, that's a great idea.

I'll bet they'd like that.

- Well, sure, they're all
set for camping anyway.

It'd be sort of like a picnic.

- We could get a
bunch of hamburgers

and barbecue them outside.

- Yeah, that's right.

Dave and his girlfriend
and you and I

could have our formal dinner
right here in the dining room,

and Ricky and his wild Indians
could barbecue it up outside.

- Oh, you've sold me.

I think it's great.

I just hope Ricky
likes the idea.

- Oh, I'm sure he will.

- Suppose he doesn't?

- Well, then I'm sure you
can tell him in such a way

that he thinks it's
something real special.

- Well, now wait a minute.

How come I got to tell him?

- Well, because you're so good
at doing things like that.

Remember last year how you
talked me into taking you

to the symphony?

You even had me
convinced it was my idea.

- I wish I could
remember what I said.

Maybe I could talk
you into taking me out

to dinner for a change.

- I thought we covered
that subject this morning

at breakfast.

- Hey, Mom, do we have any
extra blankets upstairs?

- Oh, uh, Rick,
you're just in time.

Your mother wanted to talk to
you about a little something.

Uh, pardon me.

I'm going to see
about my tuxedo.

- What's the trouble, Mom?

- What makes you think
there's any trouble?

- Whenever Pop
takes off like that,

it usually means you got stuck
with lowering the boom on me.

- Well, not this time.

In fact, I think
it'll be good news.

How would you and
the fellows like

to have a barbecue right
out in our backyard tonight?

- Oh, gee, that sounds swell!

- I thought you'd like the idea.

You can broil hamburgers
over a big fire.

It'll be just like camping out.

- That sounds great.

- Are you kidding?

It was my idea!

- You see the backyard?

- No, I came in the front way.

- We got it all
fixed up for tonight.

- What'd you do?

Rake up the leaves?

- Oh, heck no.

We got out all the
barbecue stuff.

- The barbecue stuff?

- The barbecue tonight.

Didn't Mom tell you?

- Hey, I asked Mom
to make it informal,

but I didn't know she was
going to have a barbecue.

This is great.

Susan was worried because
she couldn't find a dress.

- Susan?

Who the heck's Susan?

- Just somebody I
happened to know.

Tell Mom I'll be back later.

- Are you kidding?

I wouldn't walk down
that kitchen for $1.

There's too much work
going on down there.

I don't want to get hooked.
- Never mind.

I'll tell her.

- I might do it for $0.50.

- We'll see her about 7 o'clock.

- How about a quarter?

- Hey, you know, this
whole tuxedo of mine

looks pretty good.

- Oh, that's fine, dear.

I'm awfully busy.

Oh, making a salad, huh?
- Mhm.

I thought I'd make a
nice mixed green salad,

and then it would do for the
barbecue outside and the dinner

inside.

- Hey, looks delicious.

- Look out now.

- Well, I'm just trying to help.

Somebody's got to
taste this stuff.

- Well, if you
really want to help,

you can put the
potatoes in the oven

and then you can
scrape out that pan.

I burned the mushrooms
when Ricky and his pals

came in to help.

Oh, and you can get
the paper napkin--

- Alright, just a second.

I think I'd better brush
this tuxedo a little more.

- Hey, wait a minute.

Come back here.

- Well, you were trying to
get rid of me, weren't you?

- Well, of course not.

I thought you said
you wanted to help.

- Well, yes, I did.

- Well, then come on.

- Oh, no, you don't.

You can work that
mumbo jumbo on Ricky,

but it doesn't work with me.

- Aren't David and
Susan here yet?

- Uh, no.

They should be here any minute.

say I think I look pretty nice,

how the party was coming along.

at her mother's.

- We're going to have a
barbecue, Mr. Thornberry.

- A barbecue?

Well, it looks like a
pretty fancy one to me.

Uh, where's David and Susan?

- Oh, well, they'll
be along any minute.

- What's this about Susan?

- Oh, she's a friend of David's.

- You mean David's bringing
a girl to the barbecue?

- Well, no, not exactly.

They're going to eat in
the dining room with us.

- It won't interfere
with you guys at all.

- I kind of like girls myself.

[doorbell rings]

- Oh, uh, pardon me.

- Susan, I'd like you
to meet my father.

- How do you do?

- And this is my mother.

- Hello, Mrs. Nelson.

- And Mr. Thornberry, my
brother and some of his friends.

- Oh, uh, Rick, why don't

I had to change.

- You didn't tell me you and
Mom were going out to dinner.

of an embarrassing situation.

We couldn't very
well sit in there

all dressed up with David and
Susan dressed for a barbecue.

- Well, uh, yes,
as it turns out.

This whole deal seems
kind of suspicious.

- What do you mean?

- Well, are you sure this
wasn't a crafty maneuver

on your part to get me to dress
up and take you out to dinner?

- Now, how could I possibly
have planned it so well?

- Well, Thorny could
have been in on it.

He'll do anything for a free
steak dinner, the big moocher.

- I'm afraid it was just luck.

- Well, where do we go?

- It's been so long,
I really don't know.

- Hey, how about that expensive
place out by the country club?

You know, the spot you read
about in all society columns?

- Oh, no, that burned down.

Three years ago.

- Thorny was talking
to me the other day

about a little place
he and Catherine

ate at about a month ago.

A very romantic
atmosphere, I understand,

a dance band and all.

- Oh, I know.

Catherine said the
food was just awful.

- Hey, how about that
little spaghetti joint

down on Krump Street.

You know, with the checkered
tablecloths and all?

I've heard a lot of
people speak about that.

Nice atmosphere, I understand.

Very quaint and all.

- No, I kind of feel
like steak tonight.

- Yeah, so do I. Well, uh, where
would be a good place to go?

- Say, I know a
place where they've

got the best steaks in town.

Very reasonable, too.

And nice, friendly atmosphere.

- You know, that sounds like
the best suggestion yet.

- Well, come on, what
are we waiting for?

- Is everything
satisfactory at this table?

- It's wonderful, Ricky.

Tell Mr. Thornberry
he's a terrific cook.

- Well, thank you.
I'll tell him.

Of course, without my
fire, he'd be nowhere.

Does anybody care

- Me.

- Nothing is gonna
be as good as this.

[chatter]

- Would you mind turning up
that radio a little, maestro?

- Sure.

How's that?

- Fine.

Care to dance?

- Oh, I'd love to.

- I may cut in later, David.

- You do that, George.

In about five years.

- I'll wait.

I'm a patient man.

- I think this is just about
the nicest evening I've ever

spent in my whole life.

- I'm glad you're
having a nice time.

- I guess it was silly
to worry about the kids.

They all seem to be
very happy out there.

David and Susan are
having a wonderful time.

- Yeah.

I'm having a
wonderful time, too.

- So am I.

- Are you sure now?

I mean, I know you were
figuring on going out to dinner.

That beautiful new
dress and everything.

- Oh, well, thank you, dear,
but this is better than

eating out anytime.

It's kind of romantic.

It's like when we used
to have dinner together

before we were married.

- Yeah, only this time, we don't
have your roommate with us.

It's taken us a long time, but
here we are, just you and I,

alone at last.
