I'm Ricky Nelson.

My brother and I
always brush our teeth

Say, you're a sight
for sore eyes.

Where have you been
keeping yourself?

- Oh, I've been very
busy, Oz, very busy.

I've been working on quite
an interesting project.

- Well, come on over.

Sit down and tell
me all about it.

- You sure I'm not
keeping you from anything?

- Oh, no, no.

I've just been raking
up a few leaves.

As a matter of fact, I'm
happy for the interruption.

- Oh, I see.
- Sit down.

- Thank you.

Yes, this is very comfortable.

- Yeah, that's a nice
comfortable chair there.

- Well, now, tell
me all about it.

What have you been doing,
selling refrigerators

to Eskimos?

- Oh, no, nothing like that.

I've become rather interested
in an organization that,

to my mind, is sorely needed
in this helter-skelter world

in which we live.

- Oh, what's that?

- Well, let me put it this way.

Do you know what is
the greatest menace

to our psychological health,
to our peace of mind,

to our nervous systems,
and our dispositions

and our general well-being?

- No, I don't think I've
given it much thought.

- It's noise, Oz.

- Noise?

- Noise.

You know, the needless
honking of automobile horns,

the thoughtless
clattering of dishes,

people raising their voices
when the soft-spoken word would

suffice.

It all adds up to a
horrible cacophony

that takes a dreadful
toll on all of us.

You know, it makes us
irritable and frays our nerves.

- Yeah, I guess you're right.

Although, frankly, I hadn't
thought much about it.

Are you doing something
about the situation?

- Oh, yes, we are.

We phoned a local branch of
the National Anti-Noise Society

- Say, that sounds
quite imposing.

- Well, we're doing our best
to bring this to the attention

of all public-spirited citizens.

Oh, uh, do you know Mr.
Hopkins over at the bank?

- Oh, oh, yes.

As a matter of fact, I'm
gonna go over and see him

in a couple of weeks.

I usually pay him a little
visit and do a little business

with him just before
Christmas each year.

He's in charge of
the Loan Department.

- Yes, that's the chap.

He's top man in
our organization.

He's sort of the big
no-noise, so to speak.

Did you get it, Oz?

- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

- Oh, it's just a
little inside joke.

Oh, here.

Would you care to look
over some of our pamphlets?

- Oh, yeah.

Thanks a lot.

Yeah, I'll look these over
the first chance I get.

- We'd really be honored to
have an outstanding man like you

in our organization.

- Oh, that's very
nice of you, Dunk.

Uh, I would like to think it
over a little bit, though.

- Oh, certainly, Oz.

Take your time.

Well, I think I'd
better be running along.

I have a few more stops to make.

- Well, I certainly must
admire your enthusiasm.

You've really gone all
out for this, haven't you?

- Oh, yes indeed, Oz.

And frankly, I really think we
have something to shout about.

- Oh, shout?

Wouldn't a whisper
be more appropriate?

- Oh, of course, Oz.

You're absolutely right.

Oh, my goodness.

That's very amusing.

I just this minute got the joke.

- Oh, oh.

- That's very amusing, Oz.

[SPEAKING QUIETER]

- OK, Dunk.

- Oh, hi.

Did you finish
raking the leaves?

- Yeah, all finished.

- Didn't tire
yourself out, did you?

- No, no, no.

- What did Dunkle have to say?

- Dunkle?

- Mhm.

Wasn't that Herb Dunkle you were
lying on the lounge talking to?

- Uh, Harriet, you were
spying on us, weren't you?

- Well, naturally.

That's one of the
housewives rules of conduct.

You and Herb looked
like you were

solving the world's problems.

- Well, you know ol' Dunkle.

He's a real sincere
guy, but he always

gets hiped on some new
organization or other.

He's interested now in the
National Anti-Noise Society.

- Oh, that sounds good.

- I suppose.

They claim that little noises
that we hear in everyday life

sort of irritate our nerves
and give us evil dispositions.

- Well, it's probably true.

I read that children should
have a nice quiet place

to do their homework.

- Well, maybe so, but you can
overdo that sort of thing, too.

I mean, you just
can't go through life

tiptoeing around and
never having any fun.

- I'm afraid I don't
agree with you there.

- Well, how could you
agree or disagree?

Didn't even hear me, did you?

- Well, sure.

I heard you.

- You know what I think?

There are a lot of little
noises that drive us crazy

if we didn't hear.

- I suppose so.

- Uh, you take for instance
this sweeping with the broom.

It's kind of noisy, but this
is a necessary thing, sweeping.

- Yes, I'd say so.

- I mean, it makes sort
of a scrappy, raspy noise,

but, I mean, you can't very
well say to a person, look,

that's getting on my nerves.

I want you to stop it.

It's an irritating thing.

- Well, a vacuum
cleaner's even louder.

- Yeah, that's right.

- I mean, after all,
you can't interfere

with the sounds of progress.

- Well, that's true.

- Oh, uh, by the
way, Dunk tells me

that Mr. Hopkins
down at the bank

is one of the big wheels
in this organization.

- Oh, that's nice.

- First thing you
know, there'll be

a society against everything.

You take a little thing like
walking across this linoleum

floor.

This happens to
be a hard surface.

So naturally, when a person
comes clomp, clomp, clomping

across it, it makes a person
sound like she's heavy-footed.

- She?

- Well, whoever it happens
to be that's clomp,

clomp, clomping across it.

- Well, I'm sorry if
it disturbs you, dear.

- No, no, no.

That's the point
I'm making, you see.

It doesn't disturb me, and
it's ridiculous for somebody

to blame you for
sounding heavy-footed.

It's not your fault, you see.

- Well, thank you.

I'm sure you'll be happy to
know that I'm all through.

- Oh.

Uh, well, say, I want
to make out some checks.

Do you know where
those bills are?

- Yes, they're in the
drawer over there.

You go sit down, and I'll clomp
over and get them for you.

- Oh, Harriet...

Somebody sick.

But, golly, I mean,
making noise like that,

it ruins a person's nerves.

- What about Iggy Schwartz?

He's about the
noisiest guy I know,

and he's got a
lot of nerve, boy.

- Ricky, that's a
different thing entirely.

- That reminds me.

I promised to do
a favor for Iggy.

You want to come along?

- No, I've got to
wait for Freddie.

[clock ticking]

- Hey, Pop!

- Yeah?

- Has Freddie been here yet?

- No, I haven't seen him.

- He's supposed
to be here by now.

Ricky!

Ricky, I thought I
asked you guys not

to stomp around like that.

- I wasn't doing anything, Pop.

- Well, David, then.

- Well, David's outside.

[loud stomping]

Who the heck is doing that?

It sounds like somebody's
stomping on the ceiling.

- Maybe it's termite.

- David!

- I told you, Pop.

David's outside.

- This is ridiculous.

Who's making that noise?

[doorbell ringing]

- Oh, hiya, Freddie!
Come on in, man.

- Hey, I brought
Suzy along with me.

- Hiya, Ricky.
- Oh, great!

Now we can rehearse
our whole act.

I got my drums all
set up over here.

- Good.
- Close the door, Suzy.

[loud stomping]

[record playing upbeat music]

- Harriet?

Harriet!

What the heck is going on here?

- I'm losing five pounds.

- Are you sure you
aren't losing your mind?

What's the idea?

- Oh, don't act so innocent,
after all those hints you made

downstairs about my
walking so heavy-footed.

- You must be kidding.

- Oh, am I. I'll have that
five pounds off in a week.

[music playing]

[instruments playing loudly]

- Rick, Rick, Rick, Rick,
take it easy, will you?

Uh, Freddie?

Freddie?

Freddie!

- What's up, man?

- Uh, look, fellas, I hate
to seem like an old grouch,

but couldn't you take
it a little easier?

This does something terrible
to a person's nerves.

- Gee, Pop, we're just
rehearsing for our concert.

We're the featured group.

- Yeah, we'll gas 'em, Dad.

- Well, OK, If you're
going to gas people and put

'em to sleep, then why don't you
play something nice and quiet

and soothing?

- Well, how about
"Sleepy River"?

- Yeah, that sounds
like a fine one.

- OK, man.

[instruments playing loudly]

[dogs barking]

- David, what the
heck are you doing?

- I'm not doing anything, Pop.

This is their idea.

They're Iggy Schwartz's.

- All three of them?
- Yes, sir.

You know how some
guys collect stamps?

Well, he collects dogs.

- Then let Iggy
take care of them!

- He's having his tonsils out.

- Well, David, you
can't keep them here.

- I know.

I'm trying to take
them to the kennel,

but every time I start down that
way, they chase right past it.

- Well--

Can you hear me?

If the membership

Anti-Noise Society!

I've got to shout!

- Boys, have you
seen your father?

- He went to the grocery
store, said something

about paying Mr.
Peterson in cash.

- He also said something about
buying a pair of earplugs.

I see.

- I'm afraid we got him a little
upset today with all the noise

we were making.

- Noise?

I didn't hear any noise.

- I'm sure you
couldn't hear anything

sitting behind those drums.

But evidently, there was
a lot of noise going on.

- Gee, is Pop mad at us?

- No, I don't think so.

I do think it would help if we
were a little quieter from now

on, though.

- I've got the dogs tied up now.

I think I'll start down to
the kennel again as soon

as I've rested a while.

Boy, I've seen most
of the city today.

- Freddie and I have finished
rehearsing our music.

- Oh, that's good.

- That'll take care
of most of the noise.

- Noise?

What are you calling noise?

- I'm calling noise what
you're calling music.

- Oh, yeah?

A lot you know about it.

- Boys, if we're going to
keep it quiet around here,

you'll have to
stop the arguments.

See if you can cut it
down to about 15 a day.

- I'm sorry, Mom.

Your music was beautiful, Ricky.

- Oh, thanks.

I thought it was
kind of noisy myself.

- I said it was delightful.

- Oh, yeah?

A lot you know about it.

- Oh, yeah?

- How many arguments
do we have left, Mom?

- If you'll both
cooperate with me,

I'll give you a nice piece
of the chocolate cake

I just baked.
- Oh, come on.

- Oh, gee, thanks, Mom.

- I tried not to make any noise.

Even took my shoes off.

- From the kitchen.

I hope I didn't make any noise.

- No.

As a matter of fact, I
didn't even hear you come in.

Now, look, boys-- oh!

Golly, everybody's awful
quiet all of a sudden.

- Well, we think you've put up
with enough noise for one day.

Do you mind if I nit?

- No, no, no.

Go right ahead.

- I'll try not to
click the needle.

- It certainly is
peaceful around here.

- Naturally.

That's the way a home should be.

- Now look, Harriet.

What-- Ricky!

I thought-- where
is your mother?

- I think she went upstairs.

I hope we're not
bothering you, Pop.

- No, no, no, no.

Not-- oh!

No, this is fine.

Everything is, uh, dandy.

Oh, hiya, Thorny.

- Oh, hi, Oz.

All alone today, huh?

- Oh, no.

Harriet and the boys
are in the house.

- Oh, really?

Well, I didn't hear any
noise, and I figured

you'd all gone out somewhere.

- No, no.

They're just keeping
sort of quiet today.

- Oh.

Have you called Dr. Brown yet?

- No, no, no.

They're not sick or
anything like that.

They're just going along with
a little silly idea of mine

that they ought to keep a little
more quiet around the house.

- Well, I wouldn't
call that a silly idea.

- Oh, yeah, Thorny,
it's all right at first,

but it's pretty
frightening later on.

And you get the feeling you're
living in a vacuum-packed home.

- Well, I think it's very
pleasant to have a little peace

and quiet in the
neighborhood for a change.

- If you feel that way,
maybe you ought to take over

my application for membership
in that society of Dunkle's.

- Yeah?

What society is that?

- Oh, it's a little thing
they call the Anti-Noise

Association.

- Well, sounds like a
worthwhile organization to me.

- I suppose they mean well.

- Believe you me, Oz,
it's about time somebody

tried to do something
about all the noise that

goes on around here.

There's no excuse for
a lot of the commotion

we have to put up with!

Absolutely no excuse!

- Oh, be centered.

You're blowing your top.

- You can fill the court
with the whole idea, Oz,

and you can tell that
to Dunkle for me.

- Well, he just lives
across the street.

Why don't you just
yell it over to him?

- Believe you me, Oz.

This group has the right idea.

You know yourself it gets
pretty boisterous around here

at times.
- Oh, I don't know.

Personally, I don't
mind a little noise.

- Well, I don't mind
a little noise either.

I do mind it when people start
throwing those noisy parties.

Gee, you'd think they'd have
more consideration for the rest

of the neighborhood.
- Now, now, wait a minute.

I don't recall any noisy
parties around here.

- Oh, no?

What about that big
New Year's Eve brawl

they had in the block last year?

Police had to come and--

Oh, wait a minute.

That was at my house.

- Yeah.

Hey, do me a favor, will you?

I have to carry some of this
stuff out to the incinerator.

Give me a hand.
- Sure.

Say, Oz, speaking of parties,
have you seen a gray box

around here about so big?

- No, I don't believe so.

- I stashed it away here
in your garage last summer

so my boy Will wouldn't
find it, and now I

can't find the
darn thing myself.

- Well, if you left it here,
it must be around someplace.

- Been saving it for the New
Year's party at the Randolph's.

- What's in it?

- Can't tell you that, Oz.

It's a surprise.
- Oh.

- But I'll tell you this much,
it's going to make the New

Year's party a real
bang-up affair.

- Oh, fine.

We'll probably have the whole
police force out this time.

- Well, you can
always tell how good

the party is by the
number of policemen who

come to break it up.

- Now, that's a fine attitude
for a guy who's in favor

of the Anti-Noise Society.

- Well, Oz, a little noise is
only natural on New Year's Eve.

Say, who's all in
this group anyway?

- Oh, I don't know many of them.

Dunkle's in it, of course.

And then I understand the
local chairman is Mr. Hopkins.

You know, he's that guy in
charge of the loan department

down at the bank.
- Oh, sure.

You mean ol'
stone-faced Hopkins.

- Yeah, that's the guy.

Comes in handy around
Christmas time, though.

I usually go down there
and float a little loan

to sort of tide me over.

- Ah-ha.

Now I see why you
joined the club.

Want to protect that
little loan, huh?

- Well, as I say, it comes in
kind of handy around Christmas

time.

Let's put it this way--

as I think it over, I'd
kind of like to ease out

of joining the society.

But I just believe ol' Hopkins
didn't find out about it.

- Uh-oh.

- What's the matter?

- Looks like you got a
couple of visitors, Oz.

- Mr. Nelson.

- Oh, Mr. Hopkins!

Speak of the devil--

That is, we were just standing
there talking about you.

- Yes.

I wanted to drop by to discuss
the association with you.

- Oh, yes, yes.

- This is Mr. Pierce.

He is the chairman of
the membership committee.

- Oh, how do you do, Mr. Pierce?

- [clears throat]

- This is my neighbor,
Mr. Thornberry.

This is Mr. Hopkins
and Mr. Pierce.

- [SPEAKING LOUDLY] Well,
how do you do, gentlemen?

I've been hearing all about
your fine organization,

and it's really a
pleasure to meet two

such public-spirited citizens.

Yes, sir.

- Well, thank you, sir.

- Uh, gentleman, would
you care to sit outside?

We have some very
comfortable chairs out there.

We could discuss this matter.

- Thank you very much.

- Yes, sir.

This association is
a wonderful idea.

It's about time
somebody did something

about the noisemakers and
the loud-mouths in this town.

- We hope to eliminate
quite a bit of that

once we get our
campaign underway.

- Well, more power
to you, I say.

You'll be doing the
community a great service.

You know what?

I may even join
that club myself.

- Good for you!
Good for--

- Edgar.

- My neighbor is
quite an enthusiast,

but I guess you've already
noticed that, Mr. Stone Face,

uh, Mr. Hopkins.

- Yes.

We certainly appreciate
your spirit, Mr. Thornberry.

- Well, Mr. Nelson knows
that I'm a great campaigner.

If you need anyone out
there to beat the drum

or lead the brass
band, just call on me.

- Uh, Thorny, I'm
afraid you don't quite

grasp the essence of
this organization.

- Gentlemen, if I
may, in a few words,

we're opposed to
commotion, clamor, din,

and hubbub in any form.

You might say that
we're striving

to make the world a
noiseless place to live in.

- Sounds like a
big undertaking...

Big job.

- True, but we must make
everybody aware of the damage

noise can do.

Damage to the nerve centers,
damage to the brain cells.

- People every day are just
listening themselves to death.

- To be honest with you, I never
thought of it quite that way.

- Edgar and I are very impressed
with the peace and serenity

of your neighborhood,
Mr. Nelson.

It's very encouraging to
find a street so quiet--

[dogs barking]

- Uh, my son David
is taking some dogs--

[loud car engine] to
the kennels, and he

seems to be having
a little difficulty.

The dogs don't want to go.

- [SPEAKING LOUDLY] You
were saying, Mr. Hopkins?

- This quiet neighborhood
certainly speaks well for--

Those airplanes fly
lower every day.

- Sounds like this one is
taking off on the driveway!

- Oh, my goodness...

[loud car engine]

Ricky, Ricky!

Would you cut that off, please?
What are you doing?

- Gee, Pop.

David's trying to get
the dogs into his car,

and he wants the motor all
warmed up and ready to go.

- Well, I'm trying to
talk to some men out here.

We can't hear ourselves think.

Now shut it off, will you, son?

I'm terribly sorry about all
these interruptions, gentlemen.

- It's perfectly all right.
- Excuse me, Oz, but--

- This is usually a quiet--

- --what about the stuff
in the incinerator?

- Oh, yeah.

Say, I was about to burn some
trash out in the incinerator.

Will you pardon us
for just a moment?

- Oh, certainly.
We'll go with you.

In fact, I have some
noiseless matches you may use.

- Oh!

Thank you.

I'll give them a try.

- You're welcome.

- As I was saying, this is
a fairly quiet neighborhood.

Naturally, that's in
a new member's favor.

- Well, it usually is.

I don't know what
happened this afternoon.

Oh, Thorny, Mr. Pierce
just gave me these matches.

They're noiseless.

Oh, that's wonderful.

You know, Mr. Hopkins,
I think Mr. Thornberry

would make a very valuable
addition to your society.

- Who?
Me?

Oh, they wouldn't want big
noisy me clomping around there.

- I'm sure you'd both fit
into the group perfectly.

- Oh, well, thank you very much.

- Does your incinerator
always act that way?

- No.

I can't imagine what happened.

[loud crackling]

- What are you putting in there,
exploding breakfast cereals?

- Ozzie, my box!

- What about it?

- Oz, did you put any of
the contents of this box

in that incinerator?
- Well, yes.

Why?
- These are my fireworks!

I was saving them for
the New Year's party!

- Fireworks?!
Run for your lives!

[fireworks exploding]

[laughter]

[dogs barking]

- I believe this belongs
to you, Mr. Nelson.

- What's that?

- Your application
for membership!

And since I won't be seeing
you again, Merry Christmas!

- Mr. Hopkins, please!

- Now you see what
you've done, Thorny?

- Well, Oz, it's a little
