- Hi, Oz.

Well, I wanted to
borrow a hammer,

and I thought maybe
you might have one.

- Oh, yeah, I have one.
Did you get it?

- Well, no.

I know this sounds silly,
but when the car drove up,

I felt a little awkward.

After all, this is your garage.

- Well, sure, it's my
garage, but why should you

feel awkward?
- You got me.

I'd already hidden the Coke
bottle in my back pocket.

- Well, you know you're welcome
to help yourself any time

you want to.

There's a bottle
opener right in there.

- Oz, you're a peach.

- Oh, oh!

- Oh, I forgot.

Honest, Oz, what I really
came after was the hammer.

- What do you want
the hammer for anyway?

- I'm going to put some heels
and soles on a pair of shoes.

down at the shoe maker.

- Yeah, those first-of-the-month

so I've decided to cut down

on a few unnecessary expenses.

As a matter of fact, I'm going

Well, for what you
pay for one shoeshine,

I can shine mine for months.

- Oh, Thorny, that's ridiculous.

I just got my shoe shined.

It cost me a quarter,
plus the tip.

- Well, it's OK if
you can afford it.

Personally, I'm looking for ways
of saving money from now on.

it's going to last.

- Well, sometimes it is.

spending money foolishly.

I plan to make all my

I've got some shopping to do.

I want to drive downtown.

- Oh, uh, whereabouts

- Just the emporium.

They have this new hardware
store that just opened up right

next to the drugstore.

- Uh, a lot of necessary
items for washing the car.

This is one of
those huge sponges.

- Oh, that's a very handy
gadget for getting at those

hard-to-get-at places.

You know, like the
top of your car.

- Sure got enough of this stuff.

- Well, if you're going
to save some money,

you've got to go at it right.

They're all very good things.

The initial price
may be high, but you

save money in the long run.

I always have my own car washed.

I know places that will only
charge you $0.50 if you buy 10

a lot of money at first,

but it's very economical
in the long run.

- I've decided I'm going
to press my pants instead

of sending them to the cleaners.

- Oh, yeah, that should
be a good savings, Dave.

- Did Mom tell you
she's going to start

- Even Ricky's doing
a pretty good job.

He got his allowance yesterday,
and he still has some of it

left today.

I'm glad everybody's cooperating
like this because that's

the best way to save money.

This stuff is going to save

I've been looking

- Well, I had a few
errands to do downtown.

Just got home a few minutes ago.

- Oh.

Well, I have a little
proposition to make to you.

I know you're a guy who is
interested in economizing.

- Now, just a minute, Oz.

That's a sore point
with me right now.

- Oh, what do you mean?

- Well, everything
is going wrong today.

A guy tries to practice
a little economy,

and he winds up spending
more than he saves.

- Now, wait a minute.

Don't tell me the hardware
store got to you before I did.

- Well, uh, never mind.

Go ahead.

Tell me your story.

- Well, everything's
going wrong today.

You know that tire I patched,
saved $2 by doing it myself?

- Yeah.

- Well, it blew out on me
while I was driving downtown.

- Holy smokes.

You didn't have an
accident, did you?

- Well, no.

Fortunately, I was able
to coast over to the curb.

- Oh, you had me
worried because it

looked as if you were limping
as you came out the door.

- Well, I was limping.

I think I sprained my ankle.

- When did that happen?

- When I was walking over to the
phone booth to call the garage.

I turned my foot when that cheap
rubber heel fell off my shoe.

- Now, wait a minute.

You don't mean the
rubber heel you put

on yourself to save the money?

- That's right.

It was pretty painful too.

Of course, I won't
know how serious

it is until Doc Williams
looks at the x-rays.

- You had x-rays taken?

- Well, sure, Oz.

I didn't want to
take any chances,

so I went to Doc
Williams, and he

said he thought I
ought to have an x-ray.

- Boy, you really had an
expensive day, haven't you?

- I'll say.

New tire, new shoes,
doctor bill, x-rays.

And I don't know yet how much
the ticket's going to cost me.

- Ticket?

What ticket?

- I got a traffic ticket, too.

It seems that when I
coasted over to the curb,

I parked right in front
of a fire hydrant.

It won't cost more
than $4 or $5, though.

- No, probably not.

- So I think you can
understand why I'm through

with trying to economize.

Boy, Oz, you've
got the right idea.

Enjoy life.

line, I made a wrong cut,

so I decided to make a

of the dress.

- What did you finally
wind up making?

- The cutest dish
towels you've ever seen.

- But your hair sure looks nice.

- Well, thank you.

I was afraid they might not
take me down to the beauty shop

after I canceled
that appointment.

- Beauty shop?

I thought you were
going to buy one

of those home permanent kits.

- Well, I was until
I realized one thing.

It's a lot of work
to do your own hair.

If I spend all my time giving
myself home permanents,

when would I have time
to make my own clothes?

- But you just said you aren't
going to make your own clothes.

- Well, yes, but I didn't
think about that until after I

left the beauty shop.

- At least we got
the cars washed.

I washed both the cars.

- And so you said.

- Yeah, I went back
to the hardware store

and bought some more equipment.

- More?

I thought you were
going to take back

some of the stuff
you'd already bought.

- Well, yes, that was
my original intention.

But, you see, when I went
down there the first time,

the salesman wasn't there, so
I only had another customer

to help me select the stuff.

So when the salesman came
there, he really gave--

- Hi, Mom.
Hi, Pop.

- Oh, hi.

Oh, I see you did a pressing
job on your pants, huh?

- Yeah.

- How'd they turn out?

- Well, you really need a big
steam press to do a good job.

- Oh, I don't know, Dave.

I think that-- look
at that nice crease

in the front of those, Harriet.

- Oh, yes, they look fine.

- Yeah, but look at the back.

- Oh, David.

- Well, you burned them.

- Yeah, I left the
iron on too long.

I guess I'll have to get
one of those long coats.

- Yeah, I think you'd
better find some other way

to economize, son.

- Oh, I already have, Pop.

I decided I'm going to wash
my own car from now on.

- Yeah, that's a good idea.

- I called the hardware
store and ordered some more

of that stuff you bought.

- Oh, you shouldn't
have done that.

- Well, I figured I ought to
have my own car-washing stuff.

And besides, when I told
the man my name was Nelson,

he was very happy to charge it.

- I don't blame him.

- Here are your car keys, Pop.

- Wait a minute.

Rick, where'd you get these?

- The man in the service station
just brought your car back.

- Wait a second.

You mean you sent my car
down to the service station

to get it washed?
- Yes, sir.

Don't you always
have them pick it up?

- Well, yes, but I washed
the car myself today.

- Golly, nobody told me, Pop.

- Well, no, I'm not
blaming you, son.

Gee, the man from the garage
should have seen how it looked.

- Oh, he did, but he
said a couple of washings

ought to take care of it.

It had a lot of sticky
stuff all over it.

- Well, that was
the gloss finish.

If you put that on--

You put that on for
a couple of hours,

and then you wipe it off.

That's what gives it the finish.

- Don't look at me, dear.

I'm an innocent bystander.

- What the heck is
going on around here?

- I'm sorry if I did
something wrong, Pop.

- Oh, that's OK, son.

You meant well.

- I told the man we were
trying to economize though,

and he said, why don't
you wash the car yourself?

- Well, that's what
I'm doing right now.

- He says he sells some
stuff down there that

really does a swell job.

- Now, wait a minute.

Don't tell me you bought
some car cleaner, too.

- Yes, sir.

The man said it
was terrific stuff

and you'd save a lot of money
by washing your own car.
