Here is Ozzie, who plays
the part of Ozzie Nelson.

wife Harriet as Harriet Nelson.

The older of the Nelson boys,
David, appears as David Nelson.

And his younger brother,
the irrepressible Ricky,

played by Ricky Nelson.

The Nelson's next-door
neighbor, Thorny,

is played by Don DeFore.

- You fixing something
for lunch, I hope?

- Yeah.

We can eat just as soon
as the boys get here.

- Oh, good.
- Somebody looking for me?

- Oh, hi, son.
- Lunch is just about ready.

You hungry?

- Yeah, I suppose so.

- Wait a minute.

You sound kind of
low in spirits.

What's the trouble?

- I bought Sally Hughes two
chocolate sodas yesterday

so she'd go to the
movies with me today.

- Well, I don't think that's
anything to be sad about.

- Well, neither do I.

- And now she says
she can't go with me.

- Well, I still think it was a
generous thing for you to do.

- Generous?

Heck, it was
downright extravagant.

- Well, that's too
bad she couldn't go.

- Tell you the truth, I
couldn't take her now anyway.

I spent all my money
on the chocolate sodas.

- Oh, well, those are
things you've got to watch.

You've got to figure that
stuff out ahead of time.

- I didn't think she'd
order two of them.

She's a pretty small
girl, you know.

- You know, I wouldn't
worry about it.

You can take her
some other time.

- I asked her how she'd
like to take me instead.

- Well, now that sounds
like a good idea.

What was her answer to that one?

- She said she'd let me know.

I'm supposed to call
her in five years.

Some joke, huh?

- Well, women will
do things like that.

- I guess we all got
to learn sometime.

- Hi, Pop, Mom.
- Oh, hello, Dave.

- Oh, hello, dear.
Where have you been?

- Down at Mr. Thompson's garage.

- Oh, how is he?

- Oh, fine.

You should see the place
he has down there, Pop.

It's really neat.
- Good heavens.

Look at your hands.
What have you been doing?

- I was just helping
set some pins.

- Set some pins?

When did you stop off
at the bowling alley?

- Oh, no, Mom.

See, the pins are in the car.

See, first you
have to take off--

- Oh, come on, David.

Stop showing off.

- Who's showing off?

I'm just trying to
explain something to Mom.

- Well, Dave, I
didn't know you were

so interested in automobiles.

- Oh, sure, Pop.

You ought to see Mr.
Thompson's garage.

He's got everything he
can think of down there,

all of the latest
tools and stuff.

- You ought to see some of
the calendars, too, boy.

Wow!

- Is that so?

- They just have a couple
of bathing beauties.

- You mean girls with
bathing suits on?

- Well, they're almost on.

- No, Ricky.

They have other calendars, too.

Some of them have pretty
terrific looking automobiles

on 'em.

- Well, at least one way or the
other, you're sure of what day

it is.

- They have some with
old-fashioned models on, too.

- I bet they look funny
with those old-fashioned,

long bathing suits.

- Bathing suits?

What's this about bathing suits?

- Well, now wait a minute.

Don't tell me the girls aren't--
- No, dear.

Don't get the wrong idea.

I think David means
old model cars.

- Oh!

I was worried
there for a minute.

- Yeah, there's
quite a difference.

You can fill up a car with
gasoline and go for a ride.

You fill up a girl with sodas,
and she takes you for a ride.

- What's the matter with him?

- Oh, nothing that a
good lunch won't cure.

- Yeah, I'm hungry, too.

- Uh, Dave, don't you
think you'd better

go upstairs and give those
hands a good scrubbing?

They've got a lot
of grease on them.

- Oh, I was going, Pop.

- Use plenty of soap
and water, Dave.

You'd better wash your
hands, too, Ricky.

- Golly, just because
David has grease pan hands.

- Come on, come on.

- OK, OK, don't
strike me, mother.

- He's a real character.

- You know, Harriet,
David seems to be

really interested in his garage
business all of a sudden,

doesn't he?

- Well, apparently.

After all, it won't be too
long before he has to make up

his mind what he wants to do.

- Yeah, it's hard to
keep up with them.

They grow so fast.

- Who knows?

He might decide to become
an engineer or something.

- Yeah, he might at that.

We've got to let them work
things out for themselves.

It's the only way they
develop initiative

and a sense of responsibility.

- Oh, I agree with you.

- We don't have to worry
about David on that score.

He does a good job on
anything he tackles

without any help from us.

Oh, pardon me.

- Where you going?

- Uh, I just want to
go upstairs and make

sure he gets those hands clean.

- Oh, hiya, Thorny.

- Oh, hi, Oz.

Hey, what's up?

I saw the boys go running out
of the house a little while ago.

- Oh, yeah, David went over
to Mr. Thompson's garage

to give him a hand.

- Ricky, too?

- Uh, no.

Ricky thought he'd go along just
to check up on what day it is.

- That's right.

They have some pretty
nice calendars over there,

don't they?

[laughter]

- You know, Dave's
taken quite an interest

in mechanical things recently.

- Well, it won't be long before
they're planning their futures.

- Oh, yeah.

Harriet and I were just
discussing that before lunch.

- I got a look at Will's
school program the other night.

It was absolutely amazing.

He has his whole thing
mapped out for himself.

And you have never seen so
many books in your life.

- Yeah, well, they're
starting to think in terms

of various professions now.

It won't be long.

- Yeah.

It's kind of
frightening, though.

Seems like only yesterday
I was in the same boat.

Boy, how time flies.

- Yeah, that's what Harriet
and I were saying, too.

There's one thing for
sure, though, Thorny.

We've got to let the kids
make up their own minds.

- Oh, absolutely.

And you know what?

10-to-1 they'll be just what we
wanted to be without our even

telling them.

- Yeah, I wouldn't
be at all surprised.

- I think Will might decide
to be a doctor or a lawyer.

- Oh, is that so?

- Yeah, I noticed
he's studying Latin.

That's so he can read those
prescriptions on the bottles.

- Well, as I say, David
seems to be leaning more

towards the
mechanical side of it.

- Well, he's probably studying
a lot of mathematics and stuff.

- Yeah, I believe he is.

I'm glad of that, too, because
I was always sort of hazy

when it came to algebra
and trigonometry

and advanced calculus
and long division.

- That sounds like me.

I always thought an
equation was some guy who

knew how to ride a horse.

You know it was months before
I found out the slide rule had

nothing to do with baseball?

- Hey, you were pretty
dumb, weren't you?

- Oz, not so loud.

Don't want Will to hear you.

It might give him an
inferiority complex.

- I don't think we have
to worry about that.

You know, Thorny, this may
be just parental pride,

but I have a feeling the boys
are going to make us real proud

of them one day soon.

- Yeah, you're right, Oz.

That day's going to come
sooner than we think.

We might as well face it, Oz.

The younger generation
is going to take over.

- Yeah.

The old order changeth,
yielding place to new.

- Yeah.

Well, Oz, I think I'll be
going back in the house.

Might take a little nap.

- Sounds like a
pretty good idea.

We owe it to the boys to
take care of ourselves.

- That's right, Oz.

We don't want to be
liabilities in our old age.

- Oh, that's for sure.

- See you later, Dad.

- Uh, take care of
yourself, old man.

And I do mean old man,
you old fossil, you.

- That you, David?

- No.

This is his old dad creaking
his way in the house.

- Well, come on in, Dad,
and rest your weary bones.

- Oh, you're kidding, but I
think I will sit down here

for a minute.

Oh, boy.

That fire feels good.

- Shall I got you
a shawl, a pillow,

and a pair of spectacles?

- No, that won't be necessary.

You know, I was having kind
of an interesting conversation

with Thorny just now about
the boys and their futures.

- Now that's funny because I was
talking to mother on the phone

a little while ago.

We were talking
about the same thing.

You know, I think David's going
to decide to be a mechanic.

He certainly spends enough
time down at Thompson's garage.

- Well, I've been
thinking about that

and it might not be so bad.

It's quite a future in
that field for a young man

with drive and ambition.

- Well, I guess there
is in most anything.

- Well, yeah, but
especially now.

This is a mechanical age.

You know, working out
there at the garage,

you can get a lot of valuable
experience first-hand.

Get right under the cars
and fix the engines,

that's the way to start.

- One thing's sure,
he'll be working his way

from the ground up.

- Well, that's the way to do.

Learns more and more,
and first thing you know,

he's ready for a
partnership in the place.

I can see him now.

Of course, the
real responsibility

will come when he
gets his own garage.

Boy, won't that be something.

I imagine we can go in and
get gassed up for free.

- Sounds like she's
opening up a saloon.

- No, no, I mean it.

You get yourself
a good location,

you can really do all right
with those gas stations.

David has a fine personality
for that sort of stuff, too.

Not only that, he's
industrious, likable.

Then the next thing you
know, he branches out

and gets himself a
couple of more stations.

- Well, just so he
doesn't take on too much.

You know, I think that
gets so many young fellows

off to a rough start, taking
on more than they can handle.

- Oh, you don't have to worry
about David on that score.

He can handle it.

And after he gets, say,
two or three garages,

he can start a used car lot.

Of course, he'll probably have
to change his name to "Honest."

"Honest" Dave Nelson.

"Honest" Dave Nelson.

I could see it now.

David's just the
type for that, too.

He has a nice personality.

He's good at meeting people.

Good organizer, too.

Yeah, that automobile business
is just right for Dave.

You know how those
guys make money.

Just wait till those oil stock
dividends start pouring in.

- Oil stocks?

- Of course, he'll invest in
oil stocks with his connections.

That's the logical thing to do.

Buy some stocks in
leading oil companies.

He has a lot of
executive ability, too.

You know, he can handle
a lot of things at once.

He's got ambition,
ability, lots of ingenuity.

Yes, sir.

That kid's really going to
make some important money

one of these days.

Of course, it may
be a little while

before he can retire and
live on his investments,

but until that time
comes, he'll be

able to get along
quite comfortably.

- Oh, well, I'm
glad to hear that.

I was beginning to worry
about the poor boy.

[laughter]

- You don't have to
worry about David.

What a future that
kid's going to have.

- Well, I hope he doesn't
forget us in our old age.

- Oh, don't be silly.

He wouldn't do a
thing like that,

not after the good example
we've been setting for him

all these years.

Uh, Harriet?

- Yes?

- Remind me to give him an
increase in his allowance,

starting next week.

[door knocking]

Oh, come on in, Thorny.

- Hi, Oz.
- Hi.

Grab a glass and come
on over and sit down

and have some cookies
and milk with me.

- Thanks.

I think I will.

- Here you are.

It's nice and cold.

- Well, sir, I just had a little
man-to-man talk with my boy

Will.
- Oh?

- Yep, it looks like
my hunch was right.

Looks like he's
definitely decided

to go to medical school.

We had quite a serious
discussion about it.

Of course, the final decision
is entirely up to him.

- Oh, yeah.

Well, gee, that's fine, Thorny.

I think Will will make
a very good doctor.

- Yeah, I think so.

He's always had a talent for it.

I remember one time when
he was four years old,

I bought him a teddy bear.

The first thing he did was
to perform an appendectomy.

- Performing operations
even at that age, huh?

- I'll have you
know he performed

that delicate piece of surgery
with only a butter knife.

- I'll say this, he's chosen
an honorable profession.

- Yeah, I'm pretty
happy about it.

- Harriet and I have been
talking a little more

about David's future, too.

- Oh?

What'd you decide about?

- Well, I guess he'll go
into the garage business.

- Well, there's certainly
nothing wrong with that.

- Oh, I know there isn't.

- Good mechanic can always
make a very comfortable living.

- Well, of course.

And then we thought after he--

- I'll admit, it's not as
glamorous as being a doctor,

but it's certainly honest work,
and it takes a lot of skill,

too.

- Well, you're darn right
it takes a lot of skill.

- Believe me, Oz, you
haven't got a thing

to be ashamed about.

- Ashamed?

Who's ashamed?

- Well, you had an
apologetic tone--

- Now, now, wait
a minute, Thorny.

I'm very proud of
David's choice.

A fellow with his abilities
can really go places

in the garage business.

- You bet.

He'll probably be owning
his own gas station.

- Well, the way Harriet
and I have it figured out--

- It'd be nice having a mechanic
in the neighborhood, too.

You know, Will's going to have
a lot of night calls to make,

and you never can
tell when he'll

need David to fix a flat tire
or pull him out of the mud.

- I'm sure David will be very
happy to send one of the boys

over.

- Well, of course Will
can help him a lot, too.

I know he'll make sure that
Dave gets a few ambulances

to service, and he'll
ask his medical staff

to buy gas at his station.

- Well, we appreciate
that, Thorny,

but David's not going to be
satisfied with doing this

on a small scale, you know.

He's got plenty of ambition.

- Well, so has Will.

I have a lot of
admiration for that kid.

Think of all the schooling
it takes to be a doctor.

Certainly not an easy life.

- Well, a mechanic's life isn't
exactly a bed of roses either.

- No.

No, indeed.

But you must admit that a doctor
has a pretty rough time of it.

Out in all sorts
of weather and--

- Well, how about David?

Has to get up in the middle of
the night to pull some nincom--

uh, pull somebody
out of the mud.

- And then there are
those operations where

a life may hang in the balance.

It takes a very skilled
hand to guide that scalpel.

- Well, one slip
with a screwdriver,

and a new car goes
right to the junkyard.

- Yes, sir, that boy of
mine has courage, all right.

He's chosen a
difficult profession.

After all, not every
boy can be a doctor.

- Well, I'm sure David
could be a doctor

if he set his mind to it.

- He probably could,
but it's much better

to go in for something that
he feels he can handle.

Besides, as a mechanic,
think of the great service

he'll be performing
for the community.

- Great service?

- Certainly.

Doctor Thornberry's car has to
be kept in good working order.

- Look, Thorny, I haven't
decided yet definitely

whether David is going
to be a mechanic.

- You haven't decided?

Well, it seems to me it's
up to David to decide.

- Well, if you can push your
kid through medical school.

- I'm not pushing him
through medical school.

Will wants to go.

My son is free to
choose his own career.

- Well, David is, too.

- Well, then why don't
you let him be a mechanic?

- If David wants
to be a mechanic,

then he can be a mechanic.

- That's better.

- And I'm going to tell you
something right now, Thorny.

When you're ready to trade
in that old car of yours,

don't come to David's
agency because he'll

give you absolutely nothing.

Uh, Harriet?

- Oh, hi, dear.

- Where is David?
Do you know?

- He hasn't come home yet.

- Oh.

- You seem upset
about something.

- Oh, I am upset.

I'm not going to have David
doing Will Thornberry's

dirty work.

He can pull his own
car out of the mud.

- What's this?

- Oh, Thorny has
some ridiculous idea

about Will becoming a doctor.

- Well, I think
that's wonderful.

- Wonderful?

It's a menace to the community.

Some doctor.

I wouldn't let that kid
sew up a roast turkey.

- I think Will's a
pretty smart boy.

- Smart?

Well, he can't
even change a tire.

Gets his car stuck
in the mud, calls

David in the middle of
the night to pull him out.

- What are you talking about?

- Oh, that Thorny
burns me up sometimes.

- Why?

What did Thorny do?

- Oh, it's his whole attitude.

You'd think Will was some
sort of a genius or something.

- Well, there's nothing
wrong with a father

being proud of his son.

- Well, he abuses the privilege.

You know, Harriet, I've
been thinking this over,

and there's nothing wrong with
being a mechanic, of course,

but don't you think it might
be a better idea if David

considered something else?

- Oh, I don't know.

He seems to have
his heart set on it.

He's always down at
Thompson's garage.

- Well, it's not an easy
life, especially when there's

a helpless medicine man
in the neighborhood who's

always having blowouts,
getting stuck in the mud.

- Meaning Will
Thornberry, of course.

- Well, who else?

I think we'd better send
David to law school instead.

- Law school?

- Well, sure.

David would make a fine lawyer.

He'll have a lot of business
if Will Thornberry ever

becomes a doctor.

He'd probably get sued for
malpractice every other week.

- Well, I don't think
David wants to be a lawyer.

- Then we'll send him
to medical school.

In fact, I think I like
that idea even better.

- Well, I don't think David
wants to be a doctor either.

- Harriet, boys
David's age don't

know what they want to be.

It's up to their parents
to decide for them.

- I thought you were
the one who said David

should choose his own career.

- Well, yes, of
course he should.

Naturally, the final
decision will be left to him.

- Well, as long as he
has the last word on it.

- Well, certainly.

Whatever kind of a doctor he
wants to be is fine with me.

- Well, suppose he doesn't want
to be any kind of a doctor.

- Then he can be a lawyer.

He can be anything,
anything except a mechanic.

- But, Ozzie--

- Harriet, please.

I thought the whole thing
over and I've made up my mind.

- Yes, master.

- Look, I think I'll
go over to the garage

and see Mr. Thompson.

- Why?

- Well, I want to have a little
talk with him about David.

Oh, and if Thorny calls me, will
you give him a message, please?

- OK, what's the message?

- Tell him he's
got a lot of nerve.

- For what?

- For calling me.

- Well, hello there, Mr. Nelson.

- Hiya, Mr. Thompson.

- If you're looking for David,
he left about 15 minutes ago.

- Oh.

Say, I hope he isn't making too
much of a nuisance of himself

around here.

- Oh, no, no, not at all.

I'm glad of the company.

You know, Mr. Nelson,
that boy has a good mind.

- Oh, thanks.

You really mean that?

- Yes, sir.

He shows a real interest
in mechanics, too.

That's a good sign
in a boy his age.

- Oh, yeah, I guess it is.

- You take most of
the kids nowadays,

they all want to be doctors,
or lawyers, or scientists.

I'm not saying there's
anything wrong with those jobs,

but how many kids
want to be mechanics?

Not many, I can tell you that.

- I guess you're right.

- Well, it takes a lot of
work and training to turn out

a first-rate garage man.

There was a time not long ago
when just about anybody could

get by in this business,
but not nowadays.

A fellow's really got
to keep on his toes.

Competition's too keen.

- Yeah, I guess it is at that.

- I think the thing most
people don't realize

is the responsibility
that goes with this job.

Just think of all the people
who depend on the mechanic.

Where would your office worker
be if his car wasn't running,

or if the buses weren't running?

- He wouldn't get to work.

- Where would your big companies
be without their trucks?

- Out of business.

- Where would your doctor be?

- Stuck in the mud.

- Just about everybody
in this country

depends on the automobile.

And behind every car,
you'll find a mechanic.

And if you don't find them
behind it, just look under it.

- I've never really
thought of it that way.

- Well, not many people do.

When I was a young fellow,
I considered being a doctor.

- You did?

- Yes, mainly it was
my parents' idea.

But you know
something, Mr. Nelson?

The way I feel right now,
I wouldn't trade places

with anybody.

- Well, I really don't
blame you, Mr. Thompson.

You've been here a long
while, haven't you?

- 20 years.

Started out right here in
this spot with a monkey

wrench and a lunch pail.

And believe me, the only
thing in my lunch pail

was my monkey wrench.

- Well, you've certainly
made a success here.

- Thank you, Mr. Nelson.

That's nice of you to say that.

- No, I really mean it.

Well, I think I'd
better be running along.

I want to have a
little talk with David.

- Well, there's nothing
the matter, I hope.

- Oh, no, no.

It's just that his mother has
some silly idea about his going

to medical school.

Well, it's been nice talking
to you, Mr. Thompson.

- Good to see you, Mr. Nelson.
Drop in any time.

- You bet I will.

Harriet?

- Hi.

- I just had a wonderful
talk with Mr. Thompson

over at his garage.

You know, he says he
thinks David has the stuff

to make a first-rate mechanic.

- Well, that's
fine, but I thought

you had different ideas.

- Oh, no, see, that's what
we were talking about.

Now, a lot of kids have
fancy ideas about careers.

You know, they want to be
doctors, lawyers, scientists,

and so forth.

Now, I'm not saying
there's anything

wrong with jobs of that sort.

- No, it's a living.

- Exactly.

But how many kids today
want to be mechanics?

Not many, I'll tell you that.

And if you don't
mind, Harriet, I

think we ought to give up
the idea of David's going

to medical school.

- But you were the
one who suggested it.

- Oh, uh, yes, I was the one.

That's another thing, Harriet.

I think parents ought to let
kids decide for themselves what

they want to be.

If David wants to be a
mechanic, I don't think you

and I ought to stand in his way.

[door opening]

Oh, yeah.

Oh, hiya, boys.
- Oh, hiya, Pop.

- Hi, Pop.

- Uh, Dave, come on over
here and sit down, son.

I want to have a
little talk with you.

I'm mighty proud of you.

- You are?
- Yes, siree.

I want you to know I think
the career you've chosen

is just about the finest
thing a boy could go into.

- Gee, I didn't think
you knew about it, Pop.

- Well, of course I know,
and I think it's fine, Dave.

Of course, you'll
have to work hard.

- Oh, I will.

- It won't be an
easy life, you know.

- Oh, I know, Pop, but
I think it'll be fun.

- That's the spirit, Dave.

It'll be fun if you make it fun.

You've got to just get
in there and pitch.

- Oh, I don't think they'll
let me do that, Pop.

- Do what?

- Pitch.

I'll be announcing the
games, not playing in them.

- Announcing what games?

- I thought you knew.

I'm going to be a
sports announcer.

- A sports announcer?

- I'm going to be
president of a bank.

- Well, Dave, I thought you
were going to be a mechanic.

- Well, that was a
couple of days ago.

- Well, for goodness sakes, son.

Make up your mind.
- I have.

I'm going to be a
sports announcer.

- I'm going to be
president of a bank.

- Well, yes, that's
very nice, Rick.

- Sports announcers can
make a lot of money, Pop.

- Oh, I know, but, David, after
all, money isn't everything.

- It is to me.

I'm going to be
president of a bank.

- Yes, I know, Rick.

As president of a bank.

- I'm accepting
deposits right now,

in case anybody would
like to make any.

- Why did you decide to be
a sports announcer, David?

- Oh I've been thinking about
it for a long while, Mom.

You'll be proud of me.

- Well, of course,
we will, dear.

- Well, sure, we're
proud of you, Dave.

I mean, it's fine.

It's just you've been going over
to Thompson's garage so much

lately that we just
naturally assumed

that you were interested in
mechanics and automobiles.

- Oh, not especially, Pop.

- Well, after all, you've been
going over there every day

for the past two
weeks, haven't you?

- Yes, sir.

- Well, I don't understand it.

- Pop?
- Yeah?

- I know why you
don't understand it.

You've never seen
Betty Lou Thompson.

- Oh, hi, Oz.

- Hiya, Thorny.

- How's everything?
- Oh, just fine.

How's everything with you?

- Fine.

Oh, by the way, my
boy Will is kind

of changing his mind about
going to medical school.

- Oh, really?
- Yeah.

You know, I never really thought
he should be a doctor anyway.

Too tough a life.

I'm very happy with the

the boy can really progress,

really make a name for himself.

- Hey, that sounds
