we thought dad might have done.

Like, could he have
robbed a bank?

Could he have killed someone?

Drugs never occurred to me.

Glaser: I knew that I was gonna
get indicted.

Wetherall: We knew we were being
followed home from school.

Glaser:
I always felt what I was doing

was the right decision
for my family.

Wetherall:
And he'd always promised us
as soon as it got too bad,

he'd turn himself in,
but here it was.

It was bad, and he wasn't
anywhere to be found.

Walter White and Saul Goodman
both needed to disappear.

In "Breaking Bad," they simply
had to hire a disappearer.

Former drug smuggler Ben Glaser
went on the lam

with his entire family.

He evaded global authorities
for over a decade.

He constantly changed
his identities,

his whereabouts, and his methods
for keeping his family safe.

Though most of the time,
his children never knew

they were on the run
from the law.

What would you be willing to
give up in order to remain free?

Glaser: The first time
that I sold any pot,

I sold 100 rolled joints
to Brian Epstein

for The Beatles and himself.

It evolved slowly.

Two pounds to five pounds,

then to suitcases,
and it became cars.

And then trucks, boats,
and then planes,

from a few thousand dollars
to $50 million.

It was a massive business.

Over that time,
Ronald Reagan became president,

and he developed
a drug task force.

...tears families asunder and
weakens the moral fiber of...

So Sarah and I are living
very happily now,

and we have three kids

and I've agreed
to leave the business.

But I make a mistake,
and I get a call

that the FBI had started
to investigate me and my people.

I knew that
I was going to get indicted,

so we sell my house and leave
the country with my family

and completely disappear.

Wetherall:
I spent 10 years as a fugitive,

and of those 10 years,
3 or 4 of them aware of it

and aware
that I was going to school

and the name
that my school friends called me

was a fake name.

And that was very surreal,
always.

He was very good
at hiding it from us.

We moved house all of the time,
sometimes every nine months,

so our life was a series
of packing, throwing things out.

We moved to Portugal,

which they had decided it was
the best place for us to go.

Glaser: I had gone to Portugal
in my real name,

so the same time, I started
to develop my false identities.

I went to the library, where
they had the old newspapers.

I looked up the obituaries,
and I found infants

that would have died in the age
that I needed to be,

and then I would apply
to get their birth certificate,

which led to me being able
to put together other IDs,

opened bank accounts,
took driver's tests,

got credit cards.

I had two identities.

If at any point,
one ID, one failed,

I'd be able
to switch into the second ID.

Vanishing without a trace

requires skill, money, courage,
and the discipline

to give up
all that is dear to us.

Glaser: We had a very nice life
in Portugal,

but then the indictments
came out.

And so we decided
to move to England.

I went from my real name
to Martin Kane.

Wetherall:
When we settled in the UK,

we'd escaped the authorities,
so we actually were safe

and everything was relatively
normal for a couple years.

And everything
would've continued to be normal

if Dad hadn't
got in trouble again.

Two brothers
who I have done business with

had successfully done
some smuggling,

and they had accumulated
like $50 million.

So these two brothers
employed me to launder it.

And when the authorities
connected Dad's new identity

with his former identity,

suddenly, they were
very interested in finding him.

Glaser:
Shredded Martin Kane

and became Paul Ritchie
overnight and moved to Paris.

Wetherall: Me and my sister
came home from school one day,

and we saw two strangers
in the living room.

And Mom came and met us

and told us
that our dad was a fugitive

and he was wanted
by the FBI and Scotland Yard.

The phone was tapped.

The house was probably bugged.

I was 9 years old.

Those things
don't necessarily mean

what they mean to us as adults.

All you really hear is,
"Your dad is a criminal,

and we're in danger."

It was turmoil for them.

Wetherall:
For me, being younger,

I just felt abandoned.

We didn't know where he was.

He didn't know
we'd see him again.

I missed him, and I was
very hurt by his actions.

Glaser: I didn't want
to lose touch with the kids,

and they didn't quite know
what was happening.

But they went along with it.

Had these phone calls
to phone boxes,

which was very difficult
for everyone.

I knew Dad was facing a choice,

and the choice was to
turn himself in to authorities

or to keep running.

But the way he made it feel
is it's us versus them

and that we're going to
get away with it

and we're in it together,
so we wanted to win.

After a few months of that,

I think Dad
became more confident

that he could get away with
seeing us.

We then entered
this surreal world

where we would go on holidays
to visit Dad

and different places
around Europe,

all with the sense of

that it could all come
crumbling down at any point.

Glaser: And so now I'm in hiding
in Saint Lucia.

And he decides that he wants us
to visit my 12th birthday.

Scotland Yard knew that I would
see Tyler on her birthday.

Sarah contacted me and said,
"Please get the kids back."

Wetherall:
We knew it was Mom on the phone,

and Dad has this look
on his face just terror.

And straight away, me and her
knew it was happening,

the thing we always frightened
of happening.

It was horrific.

I put the kids on
the next flight in the morning.

Wetherall:
And I have such a vivid memory

of saying goodbye to him.

He was just there with, like,

a small sport bag
waving goodbye,

and the taxi was driving off

and not knowing
if we would see him again.

Two weeks after we get back,

Mum's arrested
and formally charged.

So now we're looking at Mum
going to prison.

They're talking about
taking our house,

and he'd always promised us
as soon as Mum was in trouble

or as soon as it got too bad,
he'd turn himself in.

But here it was.

It was bad, and he wasn't
anywhere to be found

to turn himself in
and stop it from happening.

And that made us all feel angry.

So we were in it together,
but we're not anymore.

At that point,
I decided to turn myself in.

He lost the things
he loved most in his life.

He lost his his wife.

He lost the contact
with his children.

He lost his name, his country,
his friends.

I went through some tough times.

Doing time, it was a nightmare.

It was a living hell.

Wetherall: There are the letters
Dad wrote me from prison.

"Father's Day is coming up soon.

I won't be able to be with you,

but you're with me
just the same.

I love you
more than these words can say."

I think that's what people
don't really realize

when they hear the story.

They don't think about, like,

Dad just being a Dad
a lot of his time.

He's a loyal dad
and a loving dad,

and I think something

that I had to take a long time
figuring out

was he could have made
the choices he made as a man

and he could also be
a loving father

and those two things
weren't mutually exclusive.

In the end, Ben was caught

and sentenced
to a lengthy prison term.

Had he chosen not to run,

his time behind bars
would've been considerably less.

But the possibility
of losing his children

was what kept him running.

Now a free man, Ben remains a
loyal father to his three kids.
