well let's just jump right into things

so you've seen this 66 Belvedere

floating around here and there in the

shop since we started the show and it

was finished a couple years ago so you

might be wondering what it's been doing

here well Troy wasn't happy with the

original paint and wanted it to be

completely redone now that's a big

undertaking and that's what I call

standing behind your work now to

Warren's credit he had nothing to do

with the original paint job but Warren's

new paint job is so pretty that it's got

me thinking that I might even be okay to

paint a car blue that's against one of

my own rules

but anyway it's here to have the engine

and drivetrain completely gone through

because after being used thoroughly as a

race car the 526 Keith Black Hemi did

suffer a little bit of damage and needed

to be freshened up but now David Myers

northern bell is back in business and

Before Troy takes me for a ride let me

give you a little background on some of

- the things that makes this car so
- special

This car was built as a multi-role

combat pretty enough to just be a

trailer Queen but fast enough to hang

with all-out race cars while not losing

its former self in the process or the

iconic good looks of a 60s era beat body

Mopar the car participated in a number

of endurance races where it pulled

itself from track to track like a daily

driver and busted out quarter mile

passes in the nines it also passed that

magical 200 mile per hour barrier in a

standing Mile with a modest set of tires

and a bit of ground clearance while

tipping the scales at 4 800 pounds the

northern bell is a study in contrast to

say the least add all that to the

signature looks of a rad ride by Troy

creation and you've got a superstar

so that's my quick introduction to the

car and I'd strongly suggest taking

another look at it on the net there's a

lot of good info on this thing out there

but what I really want to show you is

the car in motion so the camera guy

follow us in my sensible economy car

I should just fly out of here but I'll

never find it they've already got an

advantage though in the fiesta yes I

mean if she uses all four cylinders

boost Advantage yeah

I don't know what to buy that piece of

that's perfect though it is but

they tried talking to me in a turbo one

isn't that eight or nine grand more I

think I'm not here if I want something

fast I'll buy something I know right

looking for something that doesn't cost

- them to drive exactly something
- practical

And we were off to the countryside for a

quiet leisurely Drive

got it still it is still out here isn't

it

That convert one squealing over there

would be

hey bird shut up NSM Birds started

making noise and we couldn't let him be

the only one disturbing the piece it's

time to make some noise of Our Own

I literally was quarter throttle I

didn't think it's been a tire yeah

I didn't think it'd spin the tire like

that I thought it would just take off

because that's what torque is all about

no yeah you're not uh you got a big

blocking turbos yeah

and I'm telling you we weren't

three pounds of boost an amazing man it

wasn't fun

I mean you guys went out and did some

serious racing so just about any

engine's gonna I mean just getting his

ass kicked right yeah what eventually

let go well that cylinder heads that

were done for this car were made for

like big cam chef not necessarily boost

because they couldn't get anything at

the time or ran out of time so they're

kind of thinner wall big Chambers yeah

so with all the Boost and the four drag

weeks four drag weeks and the uh uh

standing mild stuff and everything it

finally just ended up cracking the heads

there it had a lot of little fractures

in them so then it was then it had

blow-by so that's why we ended up taking

it apart and fresh it up but it had not

four drag weeks for that four standing

mile events and a drag week on it yeah

and then just a lot of driving so and we

ended up getting a little bit of blow by

so that's why we took it apart and

that's where we found all the cylinder

heads were cracked and so they're

brand new cylinder heads okay

so because now they have now I think

it's just it's life's just gonna be just

driving it and enjoying it not racing it

I was a little bummed to hear that even

though the car had been updated to

better than before it's not going to be

going after any more records but hey you

know something I know what would cheer

me up

oh my God that's a freaking burnout damn

dude

damn dude

yeah

yeah

damn man yeah man we got some heat in

the tires now man

looking on the field that is great

it looks like a tank just fired

when David came to Troy he had a very

specific idea about what he wanted the

car to be

normally when you're building a car

that's going to travel over 200 miles

per hour it has a Supercar look with

huge tires in the back it's a barrel

hanging off of it independent rear

suspension just to name a few

characteristics this car is still leaf

spring with a fairly small Tire you'd

see this car unexpected to be faster but

not as impressive as it really is gonna

look under the hood shows a very

detailed but still stock looking Hemi

and hemis have a great reputation for

making power

but where's the magic that makes this

car challenge physics

it has two turbos hidden by the rear

axle

now sure there's a trade-off for having

the turbos in the back but many experts

have told me flat out that this just

won't work well one of the reasons I

love Troy is because he doesn't just

believe you can't do something because

people said you can't do something

and a seat of my pants says these turbos

- work just fine is this son of a is
- fast

This is an all-original 1941 Fleet line

it's in pretty great condition it's

packing the stock 85 horsepower inline

six three on the tree Synchro mesh

three-speed trans with a vacuum assisted

shift and heck I guess it's all really

pretty Cutting Edge stuff for the time

period but Troy and his team have been

putting loads of time and energy into

making a modern Fleet line like no other

you're probably familiar with what's

been done to the car up to this point of

construction the four-door was turned

into a two-door featuring a one-off

chassis and independent rear suspension

inspired by the new Camaro LT1 engine a

10-speed transmission modern Corvette

front suspension with fully independent

adjustable magnetic shocks at all four

corners completely handmade body release

featuring a much sleeker roof line and

actually just too many things to mention

like the 180 degree headers and once

they were all done and fit into place

the car went to the paint shop where the

Bodywork was carefully done with the

best spoke Trim in place to ensure a

perfect fit

the chassis went to be powder coated and

eventually the body and Chassis found

themselves reunited back in the main

shop where the work on the interior was

continued in the wiring began

Adam already made the back seat from

scratch and it was fitted perfectly in

the progressing Fleet line creating

something that I'm fairly certain is

more comfortable than my couch he then

turned his attention to finishing the

front seats it's an art form that

sometimes gets overlooked

but what good is an expensive custom car

if you can't ride in comfort as is too

often the case

the front seats were sourced from a new

Cadillac but by the time Adam was done

all that was left were the bones just

the frame and the electric motors and

some finishing surroundings which are

handy to keep around

the ozone build that we did for West

before had some DTS seats that were a

little bit older than this but they had

you know seven-way adjustable and seat

heaters and lumbar support and all that

stuff yeah these are a little bit more

simplified for this 41 but we he did

want to retain the side controls because

they're they're more intuitive than

having something move somewhere else and

so yeah that was one of the things that

Wes wanted was to keep those controls

where they were because they're just

logical and how they operate yeah what

he said

the fact is that the amount of planning

involved in getting these seats put

together is complicated and requires a

great deal of planning much like almost

everything else in the shop it also

requires someone with tremendous amounts

of patience and talent

I'm laying out the cushion for the front

seat so the part that you sit on right

now I'm laying them out on the bench

here and sort of the order that I'm

going to sew them in

some of these I'll I'll glue down on the

back side just so that they lay flat

where they intersect with another seam

here and then this white cloth here is

called listing tape and it's just a

manufactured single fold cotton tape

and so that's used for sewing against

the seams this will have Edge wire in it

like a paper wrapped Edge wire and then

that'll actually be tied down into the

seams and I pull those the strings down

against that wire that's trapped in

there to hold down the insert and keep

everything tight

and the same amount of thought went into

the door panels interior garnish

moldings into the discussions that's

right I said discussions look it up as

far as this this door panel in

particular for the 41 there's a few

things that are sort of unique

to this panel itself if you see the edge

it's it's obviously thicker than just a

regular door card absolutely I made this

framework on the back side

and it's and it has sort of a hat

Channel inside here with a flat piece on

the back side this piece is stamped so

that we can recess these clips inside

here and then it's got this piece of

aluminum bonded over the top well this

piece of aluminum is only a certain

thickness so that the leather is

actually proud of this this here that

traps that clip in so these are

completely serviceable if this was to

bend you can heat this up a little bit

with a heat gun and pop that thing off

and put a new clip in there so even the

clips themselves are serviceable without

having to take any of the upholstery off

now the thickness of this here and the

reason that it's tipped over is to

compensate for that late model door seal

on the 41. this has to be a certain

thickness like a late model door where

the panel sticks out into the door

opening into the interior because that

door seal is so thick so on this car the

seal sits on the Inside Edge of the door

and then this sits inboard of the door

panel unlike a originally where the door

panel came all the way to the edge of

the door and that I guess that keeps you

from having like a big void when you go

from the dash to the quarter panel and

then on a lot of hot rods that door just

kind of Falls in right this just looks

like you know a part that came from a

factory yeah this this is this is

essentially one piece uh pattern so that

so that I could stamp this this little

shape into it I have some tabs that are

welded on here and this is finished out

uh this actually puzzles into that piece

in the back and then the seal uh from

that late model door seal actually

catches the edge of this and so this

tucks into that and then that seal

actually sits behind this and then this

traps the edge of the seal and the edge

of the headliner here and so this

overlaps the headliner all the way

around

all right

so the bottom bottom edge of these

panels have uh carpet on them which

serves a couple of purposes obviously it

adds another material here which breaks

up the panel nice but it's also

functional to you know kick in the door

panel when you're getting out of the car

the kick panels inside have carpet on

them as well so the carpet's obviously a

woven material I've glued it to the face

here and bound The Edge so this binding

will get wrapped around the edge here

but because the carpet's woven it's got

this irregular Edge to it so right now

after I've glued it on there I'm coming

back and just cleaning up the edge so

that when this gets wrapped around

it has a nice smooth transition without

having these like lines or ripples in it

from the carpet you see

it's the groove I cut in the edge of

this panel because this has like a full

frame all the way around and then the

outside skin of this is actually bonded

to the face of this Frame cutting these

notches in here structurally doesn't do

anything to change it but it does give

me some relief for the seam which you'll

end up Landing in that little Notch and

then what I did was tie it off the the

Stitch right here at the edge so that

when it gets wrapped around the back

side we only have a single layer of

leather on this back side all the way

around so when it's clipped to the door

you don't have any doubled up layers and

so you have an even gap between the

panel and the door skin itself

- after seeing Adam's work I'm not about
- to question this technique

It's pretty funny to see someone

pounding on beautiful Leatherwood with a

hammer

not being an upholstery guy you're doing

fabrication methods on it

fast we went back to see that the fleet

line was nearing completion and with the

exception of some smaller jobs and test

driving as well as some of the final

- programming the light was at the end of
- the tunnel

Said even the bumps are pretty minimal

they really are

dialed in here too right now it's just

in like a middle setting if you want to

go softer you got another two song or

you can go too long

harder that's crazy and you don't have

to get out and mess with it you just do

- it from right there it's all done right
- there and then when we get in

Get in Scott what they would they get an

electron

IC jaw sensors and shock sensors so

it'll actually electronically change the

valving if it detects pitch in the car

and it also has a throttle sensor and a

brake sensor so it'll also change the

front to back

that's all dialed in in there too you

can kind of see it coming then if it's

got the sensor it knows you're given

input and then can Watch What Happens

that's awesome one final change was that

Wes decided he wanted the latest and

greatest transmission and when you've

gone this far with a car why not so the

eight speed was swapped out for a 10

speed and at the time it was done it was

some pretty Uncharted Territory and some

very interesting findings were made

along the way

but at the end of the day the team got

the transmission doing what it was

supposed to do shifting a bunch

this project is coming in for a landing

- so I grabbed Adam for a quick walk
- around on the 41.

the back of the car coming around here I

don't know if we if we highlighted this

much before when we got the card

obviously had a stock rear bumper on it

but Wes also sent a LaSalle Cadillac

LaSalle rear bumper and on the Cadillac

it said LaSalle and this sort of script

font stamped into the rear bumper the

rear bumpers on the Chevy from the

factory have a lot of nickel in them and

they're almost like spring steel so

they're very difficult to modify you can

cut them up and you can try using

silicon bronze and that sort of thing

but a lot of times they want to crack

and get to the point where you know

you're afraid if you do have a little

fender bender or something that's going

to crack the bumper and all this stuff

so we actually made

um

Some three-wheel rollers with the right

profile

and modified our three row roller and

then made a die to stamp these edges so

Rick started with a certain a four and a

half inch width of Steel stamped the

edges on the pull Max to tip them around

so that we had the profile right and

then use a three-wheel roller to bend it

to match the shape of the body it was

bent after this detail was in it yep

okay and on this bumper just to try to

be subtle we we put these little duck

bills here with just a little slit at

the bottom and brought the the tailpipes

all the way out to that and contoured

them to match so that they didn't just

jump out and we don't just have a turn

down at the back we don't want it to

look like you know a street machine

where it's got a big cut out in there or

anything that's really a difficult

detail and that's something that went on

behind cars in traffic you can tell

designers really spent a lot of time

with just the exhaust tips and on

something like this yeah how do you get

two disciplines or not well it's right

you know so right that looks and west

west is Big about the practicality of

driving the car and and we want to pay

attention to that ourselves on whatever

we're building we need to have the

exhaust get out past the bumper so it's

not just sitting underneath there it's

not blowing down on the ground and all

this stuff you can see on this this tail

light bracket these little these little

beads these flutes in here that we kind

of used on other components that we made

so this is an original piece to the car

okay

um but you can see how that that shape

sort of ties into some of the other

things as well yeah yeah Lawrence

actually measured this window opening in

the back and I sort of Drew the profile

of it so the way that this goes together

we have that pinch weld in there the

glass actually bonds to the pinch Weld

and then has a gap to the outside and

then this is actually t-shaped so it's

rounded on the front has a profile here

and then has a little spine that goes

down between the glass and the body and

then that gets bonded in after the fact

so if this all had to come apart it'd be

like a late model windshield you get a

tool on the inside cut the glass away

from the body the whole thing comes out

yeah it was sounding pretty scary but

yes you'd use the little knife and heat

it up and cut it off yep we we talked a

little bit early on these are Oldsmobile

door handles the original handles on

this turned in the body we did these

with the push button so we could have a

lock in the in the handle itself so

these weren't original to the car made a

little mechanism in there so that you

could use a lock in the key

um in the button here which it didn't

have originally these are 55 Chevy door

latches we just like the way that these

um this little pinwheel in here latches

the original Chevy is almost like a

screen door latch it just oh scary yeah

it's not that it it comes loose but it

doesn't really hold it tight and there's

really not that great of adjustability

yeah so that's what we did with that

with the dovetail so that the door

closes solid we did the double door

seals we talked about that stuff early

on so it's got this flange got this late

model Silverado door seal that goes all

the way around

and then what we talked about before is

that trim panel in here stops short so

that that seal can land all the way

around on this Flat Point here just like

a late model car

if you look across I have the door panel

mocked up in the quarter panel and you

can see that seal kind of lands on the

edge but when we try to make it as

inconspicuous as possible

oh

So a few of the things like in the dash

we aren't really big on

having a big double DIN uh stereo in the

middle of a 41 Dash yeah I know it

happens all the time but stereo

components Advance like every two weeks

yes so having that in there that's it

you look inside you're like oh okay well

that unit was from three years ago so I

know when the car was built it's just

it's a stupid thing but anyway we tried

to get something as subtle as possible

to go there because practicality reasons

you're going to want a radio anyway so

right

um Casey Casey made a lot of that stuff

to to incorporate that as well as we

could along with the console it's not in

here right now that he also made

um

So some of the other things on the dash

we tried to incorporate like AC control

so that they look like they belong this

is an original Grill piece for the for

the dash here for the

speaker in the middle original gauges at

least a configuration on this side

in the glove box

um that active suspension control is

right here so this actually Scrolls

through your other your four options for

your suspension settings and then other

than that we Dakota Digital we worked

with them on the gauges in this we

actually machine the face it's all of

their internals their LED screens and

everything the nice thing about this is

these original gauges over here are so

small it's really hard to tell what it's

actually reading even though they have a

digital signal now to tell that analog

needle where to be it's still a guess I

mean the numbers are two inches away

from where the needle is you can't even

like really tell oh yeah but the nice

thing about the LED is it's Incorporated

with all the same sensors so if you have

something that's out of spec or this

entire screen will light up tell you

your coolant level is too high or oil

pressure dropped or whatever and so it's

a big warning light and that's something

that Wes wanted so these gauges you can

program them to have whatever needle

color you want whatever color out here

you can you can scroll through this to

tell it

what you want the display to say so this

one obviously has a clock over here

right now a trip meter this has miles

per hour like gear you're in right now

but you can you can have it tell you

whatever you want well I said I think

clear back in episode one that this was

going to be one of the most

technologically advanced hot rods ever

built and I I stand by that to this day

because whoa and then with the LT1 being

direct injected as a 10-speed

transmission independent rear end the

electronic shocks and I mean it's just

where do you stop GPS you know on and on

so Casey laid these out

um these pieces fit in here to framework

these cars actually have a lot of

clearance to the bottom of the door

inside here and they actually had a

vulcanized rubber mat that went here

originally that went through that and

then there are holes underneath here and

they had like a quarter turn tab that

held that rubber piece in so what we did

is these have a ribbed rubber insert to

go inside here this will be powder

coated

for durability and then this this little

piece in the middle has this tag that

Lawrence machined we obviously did the

font for sort of the era of the car so

those inserts will go in there this will

probably be dark gray the ribs are black

rubber and then this will have a real

short inner door sill in here as well to

finish off the edge of the carpet and

- finish out against the inside of the
- seal as well

So this this may be the first time that

you guys have seen it completely put

together yes um

so you can see all the panels and

everything the the pieces that that

Casey made up here to close off the top

of our radiator

again a lot of practicality things go

into this and trying to make it look as

good as it can for what we're doing this

had a real tall radiator originally came

up came up in here we have a section

Hood so we have a much lower area in the

front here but also for the sake of you

know a lot of street rods have

um have a radiator that's like that and

Wes asked if we could do a cross flow

Radiator in it well you only have this

much room if you're fitting it within

the original core support so we made a

much wider core support that utilizes

the full width of the Grille and so you

have a radiator that's much wire wider

with a with a bigger core but then it

adds a bunch of other obstacles how do

you Shield it off so that you're closing

closing off the grill getting all the

air into the radiator then how do you

get the radiator out how do you fill the

radiator you know is there an overflow

in all these things so we've done a lot

of things to to

accommodate that as far as

you know you fill the radiator here the

overflow tank is inside the wheel well

we have a little sight glass here so

that you know how much fluid is in the

Overflow table

another practicality thing is the the

inner fenders have the louvers in them

just for air to escape from from the

engine compartment to help with Cooling

Zach Ingram and z-rods actually machine

the hat for us for the LT here and

mostly because Lawrence was so

overloaded at the time that we needed

somebody else to help and I think we

talked about that before and they did an

excellent job with it Lawrence had

already

designed and machined the valve covers

for it and they took that design and

Incorporated it into this hat here so

this is the only only one like that for

for the LT

um yeah yeah definitely unique and those

are unique too I think a lot of people

don't know how many challenges are

presented when they went to direct

injection yep everything from tuning to

the Scavenging system on these is pretty

complex as well isn't it like getting

rid of the the positive crankcase

pressure and all that is yep and that's

what that's what all these lines are

here is tank the the way that it's

pulling pulling all that stuff in has

this has this box here and we really

didn't mess with any of that stuff

because trying to re-engineer that yeah

they have millions of dollars in like

sorting out that working just right and

and that's one of the things you got to

be smart enough to say okay we're gonna

make it as clean as we can sure but but

leave the engineering side alone because

we we need it to function well and you

managed to just with a choice of

fittings and and lines and everything

look really sharp yep I like that stuff

though I think it actually adds to the

you know the mechanical look of it so

and Troy made all these lines and and

these have like a

um push push on an O-ring so once you

have the components in place it drops

down and so there's no no clamps or

anything on it and then for the sake of

like servicing you take the box out and

all the lines disconnect

in order to catch up to the fleet line

in its finished State we headed to

Columbus Ohio where the car was a big

hit with the crowd and with the judges

too apparently because it won Street

brought of the year which is a highly

competitive category I mean these poor

judges must go home with ulcers after

the show because the competition is so

stiff at any rate congratulations to the

owners Wes and Vivian Rydell and the

crew at rad rides for their hard-earned

victory

it was really great seeing Rydell's 41

progress from its early stages to where

it is now and hopefully someday I'll

find myself behind the steering wheel

there is another car here that is ready

for some driving and I've already got

the key

and I took the family on a vacation to

see its owner absolutely obliterate one

of the most important land speed records

ever at the Bonneville Salt class keep

an eye out for that and more on the next

episode of rad rides by Troy
