How did Consuelo and I meet?

The most curious thing is that
the first time we went out,

the first date,

we went to a restaurant,
and in that restaurant, I said,

"I'm going to marry you."

Among many other relationships,

well, Consuelo was the one
who conquered my heart.

when he tried to use
his credit card to pay, it didn't work.

And I had to pay for the meal.

It was so funny.

But I really liked him.

And a month after that,
I introduced him to my family.

About six months later,
we decided we were going to get married.

after our first anniversary.

from the guerrillas started
when I was working at City Hall,

in the Department of Rural Development.

As financial director of the department,

I managed a budget.

among the farming communities
and the villagers, right?

Building aqueducts for them,
or improving schools,

or improving
recreational sites for the kids.

One day, I was contacted,

through some farmers,

that they needed one billion pesos...

for them.

I told them, "Perfect, that's my job.

But I need a project so I can justify it."

They said, "No, you just worry about--
That's your problem.

Send us the money,
and you figure out what to do."

I said, "I'm sorry, I cannot.

That's not how it works."

So they started contacting me,
threatening me,

saying that I have to do it.

That if I didn't do it,
there would be consequences.

Don't pull your brother's hair.

Get up.

Until one day, my wife arrives...

Consuelo arrives from a city in Manizales,

and they're waiting for her at home.

I remember, like, four or five people.

They spoke about January...

...which was the deadline
for us to give them some money

so that they wouldn't kidnap
our son Pablo.

They were very intimidating
because they knew everything,

absolutely everything, about our lives.

We talk to the police.

They receive our complaint.

The person who is receiving
the report tells us,

"If we don't clarify
your situation tonight,

we won't be able to follow up.

There are no people and no resources.

If you have relatives abroad,

leave."

We've been here for 17 years.

I started working in the school,

as a janitor.

In Colombia, Consuelo is a professional
and an economist,

with a postgraduate degree in marketing.

I am an administrator.

I also did a postgraduate course
in earth and environmental studies.

But I didn't know what it was like
to take a broom,

to sweep.

That for me was terrible.
Picking up garbage?

Are you kidding me?

But I did it.

I work from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

I come back, I relax, I go to bed.

I arrive at 11:00 p.m.,
and I'm not in the mood for anything

but sitting down, having leftovers,
watching my news, and going to bed.

I have no strength for anything else.

There has always been that anguish

since they told us that we had
this deportation order.

But I'm thankful,
because we are still here,

and I keep going, day after day.

And we trust and have faith in God,

and faith in this country
that things will get resolved,

because we're good people
and we're doing things right.

As long as the family remains together,
that's my biggest concern.

To be taken alone,

for them to take me
while my family stays,

that would be the most painful thing
for me: to be separated.

When Kenia arrived at the border,
she had to cross the river

to Immigration.

I'll tell them that I have problems,

that I feel endangered,

that her life is in danger,
that's how she feels.

So she went there, seeking asylum.

I think it's so important
to get there before they do,

because I want to be there,

waiting to see them step off the bus,

and go out to meet them,

to be reunited.

that I'll be at the baby's birth.

The first thing we did

when we arrived in the United States
was to contact a lawyer.

We brought the entire portfolio
of documents and evidence

to seek our political asylum.

Wherever you go,
you go to church and there are rules.

You go to school and there are rules.

In your home, there are rules.

To any country you go, there are rules.

But the US is strict regarding rules.

And we said,
"We're going to follow the rules."

People who seek asylum here in San Diego

have to go to the immigration office
in Los Angeles for an interview.

But we were so nervous when we went there.

Roberto was in one office,
and I was in another one.

And Roberto is really bad
at remembering dates,

and the agent was really
focused on the dates.

"When did you get married?"

And since Roberto was full of panic,
fear, and nerves,

he forgot about all those dates.

"When was Pablo born?"

And Roberto couldn't remember.

And he yelled, "It's impossible
that you don't know your son's birthday."

And that added more pressure.

The thing is that the man said,

"No. You're going before a judge,
because I don't believe in your case."

When the new administration decided

not to validate these bills
from any congressman,

or any senator of the republic...

The new rule states
that there's not enough reason for us

to stay here in this country.

Pablo suffers a lot.

Because, again,
he's a very introverted person.

I wake up at dawn to go to work,

and recently my son
broke my heart because...

I woke up around 3:30 a.m.
and I saw his bedroom light on,

and I entered his room and said,
"Pablo, what's wrong?"

And he said, "Mommy, I can't sleep.
This situation is very complicated.

Mommy, I feel really bad
that we have to leave.

I can't sleep."

I think that Pablo feels guilty

because he was the target
of the guerrillas.

He was their objective.
They would always mention,

"We're going to kidnap Pablo."

And also because of the threats.

In the end, I was the one
who made the decision to come over here.

I made the decision for them.

And now it's my fault they're suffering.

The name of the new baby is Briget Janeri.

She was born September 29th,

at exactly 8:48 a.m.

Janeri is a girl who really likes
to be spoiled and held.

She was like that
from the womb, I think.

What's wrong, my love?

At the beginning, it wasn't the plan
that Janeri be born in the US.

But after everything that happened,
we made the decision,

and I came back
and the baby was born here.

But really...

it's mostly for her safety, her future,

the future of the boys.

When I crossed into the US,
I turned myself in to Immigration.

We were walking to try and find
a patrol car from Border Patrol.

they ask you where you're coming from,

So I told them
that I was coming from Honduras,

and I was seeking
a better future and protection.

Then the officer was really kind.

It's not every day
that people can be kind.

He was very kind.
He told us to get in the patrol car

and he picked us up.

He asked my son if he was hungry,

or if he wanted to drink water,

and he gave him
a bottle of water and an apple.

She needed to relax.

What a big belly.

Despite all the things that happened,

we're together again, reunited.

My immigration process is still, like...

I don't know
what is really going to happen.

I don't know if,
at the end of this journey,

I'll still have to go back to Honduras.

I'm going to have my first court date,
I believe, in January.

in the family,

for my children and my husband.

My phone rings,
and the only thing I do is pray,

Right now, we're in limbo.

We don't know

The only option for us
at this moment is the US,

and we believe in the US,
and we believe in the laws of the US,

and we believe our case deserves

to be analyzed differently
from the others,

because we haven't made any mistakes.

We've invested in the US.
We have a house...

And we have such good credit

that they loaned us
half a million dollars for this house.

They don't do that for any illegal
or undocumented immigrant.

The bank wouldn't loan them
half a million dollars to buy property.

So if we were poor,

"Why would I buy a house?

If I buy a house,

then the government won't help me
with my daughter's scholarship.

They won't give me welfare for my child."

it's unacceptable not to have ambition.

before I came to the US.

I'm feeling intimidated, the same way
the guerrillas intimidated me in Colombia.

There is a difference.
In Colombia, they wanted to kill me.

Here, they don't want to kill me.
They want to kick me out of here.

But they're still killing me,

because if I leave here,
I'm going to die.
