I don't even know where to begin!
The shoot was amazing.

I kind of knew, coming into a job
with three other guys, I thought,

"it's gonna be a ball. It's gonna
be fun." And it was exactly that.

Since day one,
I think we all clicked.

And it's just been...
It's been so much fun.

I mean, they all bring something
so different to the group.

A lot of fun to work with.
Sometimes too much fun.

Jake, Sam, you will orienteer
a 7km walk with Andy and Felix.

Brains and brawn -
excellent choice, sir.

There's a short cut.

Maybe it's not a good idea
to leave the path.

Let's go.

The show is about four boys
who get lost in a forest

and when they come back
to their own world,

they've come to an alternate reality
where they were never born.

So the idea is what would happen
if you didn't exist anymore'?

What would the world
be like without you,

and how would your family
have changed,

how would your relationships have
changed if you hadn't been there?

Run! Run, run!

My name's Joel Lok.
I play Andy. Andy Lau.

My name's Rahart Sadiqzai
and I play Sam.

My name's Matt Testro.
I play Jake Riles.

Dougie Baldwin. I play Felix Ferne,
who's the goth.

He begins the start of the series
as your stereotypical nerd.

Then you come to realise
as the series progresses

that he's actually got a lot of
qualities of a leader, in a sense.

His family have always been
really protective

and haven't really given him
the opportunity

to go and explore
and be independent

and do all those things
that he's always aspired to do.

Sam's journey is a big one.

He goes from being the one
that everybody loves,

everyone wants to be with,
everybody wants to be him,

to being the outcast.

He finally gets to see what it's like
to be the other person,

on the other side of popularity.

Jake is very grounded.

He is very mature, but to some
he comes off as the bully at school.

You know, he's the sporty jock,
he's the footy captain.

He's insecure about his home life.
It's broken.

You know, he doesn't seem to have
anything that he's proud of at home.

When they get lost, at first,
he's the man of the group

and he makes sure that they survive.
And he's very practical and logical.

He's cynical. He's had
the bad side of life.

He's only had people ridiculing him,

he's had people constantly disputing
everything he does.

He realises what everyone else
is going through -

that he's not the only one
that might have problems.

Some things that are really similar

between Sam, the character,
and me myself, Rahart,

is our love for food. (LAUGHS)

I... l love food.

(LAUGHS) There's just
no two ways about it.

And that's a big part of Sam
in the series.

It's just always on his mind.
He's always hungry.

Jake's probably a lot more...
grounded than I am.

I'm quite an outgoing type.

(LAUGHS) I'm the kind of kid Jake
would probably wanna hit at school.

And what I don't have in common
is his cynicism.

I don't like to think myself
as a cynical person.

I like to think positively,
think the best of the world.

You know, don't be prejudiced,
don't judge people.

The shoot was 13 weeks, I believe.

I remember at the start of the shoot,
I used to be able to go to work

with, like, three hours sleep.

And then towards the end of it, you
know, eight hours wasn't even enough.

I got here at 5:22am.

I'm gonna get some breakfast.

Deep breaths.

This is Matt and my...

...pre-scene workout.

Yeah, it's, um...
To get into character.

It's like acting is a muscle,
like any other muscle you would use.

Sorry, Kristan, but we're
doing behind the scenes.

I might just have to move you
over somewhere else.

We're gonna have to move.
Come with us! Come.

This is one of our walks.

Yeah, we, um... We do certain...

You have to stretch the muscle,
work it, warm it up.

Every single muscle of the body.

I'm ready.

(SIGHS)

As you can see,
I voluntarily get in.

I stay here during lunch
and I sleep here overnight.

- That's right. Ready for tomorrow.
- Yeah.

You are all about saving time.

How do I stay warm'?

I've got this top, this top, this jacket,
this jacket and a hot water bottle.

And then, if I want to,
I can get a hot chocolate.

Yahh!

Matt Testro took the last
hot chocolate.

Look at him. Look at
his stupid face.

- (LAUGHS) What?
- You took the last hot chocolate.

No, I didn't. There's still one left.
I took the second-last one.

Great. Then I'll have one.

Yeah, you will. What are you saying
my face is stupid for, Dougie'?

You shouldn't hurt
my feelings like that.

- Alright.

- I'm a bit of a show-off on camera.

Actually, no, there was no hot chocolates
left, so I had to settle for a water.

- That's the same thing.

- I don't know, Matt.
- OK, no worries.

(COCKNEYACCENT) He's filming
at lunch-time! Look at this.

Spaghetti, chicken, pasta.

No sauces.

Yeah, so people think that we don't
go to school 'cause we're on set.

- They go to school.
- We go to school.

I've been doing Year 12.
I'm in my final year this year.

So I've been balancing
my Year 12 studies

with my onscreen work
and my work lifestyle.

Every 1O minutes
that I get free on set

would be time spent doing essays
and time spent researching.

This is the tutoring room.

It was a green room but it's been
transformed into a tutoring room.

- Joel doesn't spend any time here.
- No time for school. No time at all.

I spend a lot of time
in here, writing.

I usually have the green room
all to myself.

Where he sleeps and listens
to music and parties.

I think everyone knows me
as the one that sleeps all the time.

I mean, on shoot you can definitely
see me sleeping in the deckchairs

at every opportunity.

So today on set
we are introducing the tea trolley.

This is where we keep
Assorted biscuits.

- Assorted biscuits for the day.
- And Shapes.

So you've got your sweets over here
and your savouries over here.

Variety of teas.

There's English breakfast,
Irish breakfast,

peppermint, Ceylon orange pekoe.

So it's actually afternoon right now,

and I'm about to make
my afternoon tea.

Here, do you want
some cordial in it?

- Do it!
- No. No!

Do you want some tea in yours?

No, I don't. I don't, I don't.
Oh, that's it!

- Ohh! Dude!
- Dude!

Oh, man!

By the time everything
was done in the day on set,

it would probably be about 6:00
by the time everything was done.

And then I'd get home
and rehearse for the next day.

By the time that was done,
I'd probably get to bed by 10:00, 10:30.

And then be up at 4:00
the next morning.

So we're shooting the...
the gym trashing scene right now.

And I've got a couple
of toilet rolls here.

Dougie's smacking me in the head.

Having a mad time.

Oh. Whoo!

(ROCK MUSIC)

I feel like... l am
the most masculine.

We're just gonna keep
throwing balls.

That was just basically myself,
Joel and Dougie running round a gym

beating each other up
and it getting videoed.

So that was fun!

Dougie.

Day four of shooting,
and it's been crazy.

We just TP'ed an entire gym.
It was awesome.

We had lacrosse with...

Yeah, we put him in a wheelie bin.
It was great.

I was just sitting there, watching.
I didn't get to do it.

Yeah. Ohhh, the horror.

And then these two are at

When we finally get the door open, the
demon comes out and haunts us, you know'?

He's trying to get in
and trying to haunt us.

is what the script says.

Yeah.

And we're just pretty much
really, really, really scared.

- Run like Forrest.

That's right - the hide-out.

- How's that feel?
- Yeah, good.

(COUGHS)

Oh, that was so fun!

Whoo! That was fun. (GRUNTS)

- That was intense.
- A lot of yelling.

- One of my favourite scenes.
- Crazy.

- I mean, it's difficult...

Yeah, with that fan,
it made it easy,

'cause it was, like, blowing
the thing in your face.

There was a lot of dust.
I've got a lot in my mouth still.

In my nose, my mouth.

MY EYES, my ears.

There's still a bit of grass
in your hair. Let me get that for you.

This is Billy, my stunt double.

- Hello!
- We look alike, don't we'?

Yeah. But no, when the helmet's on,
we look exactly the same.

Pretty much whenever I have to do any
skating, he's here right with me.

MAN: And action!

In the scene we had to do today,
Billy had to do some...

Well, "Sam" had to do some aerial tricks.
He did... Did you do a kick flip today'?

- Yeah.
- A couple of kick flips and whatnot.

And we did some fake skating as well.

So just a bit of these.

Pretending, without a skateboard.

I think it was for sound.
I don't know what it was for.

Yeah, 'cause the skating echoes.

Yeah, it was the sound of
the skateboard echoing.

This is the part where
he saves my life.

This is the part where
he actually does the trick.

Am I nervous for him?
(CHUCKLES) Hell, yeah.

(STUDENTS CHEER)

Yeah, he did well! I was hoping
they'd give me a shot.

There was the mat there and everything
for the first time.

It's, like, "Yeah, I could do this."
But then he made it look easy.

and I play Ellen.

- Uh...
- Just 'Jesse Jesse'.

- Jesse Williams.

OK! This is Jesse Williams
and he plays Sammy.

It's so testosterone-filled
it's ridiculous.

They're constantly giving us
put-downs, and, yeah.

- They're just jealous, really.
- And Joel is always sleeping.

The best part was when I got to do
awesome stunts with Joel.

He got to save me from a bus.
That was pretty fun.

That was pretty beautiful.

Um, what else? I don't know,
I've just enjoyed everything, really.

How's Andy as a boyfriend?
I've heard good things about him.

- I wouldn't know, obviously.
- He's not a very good kisser.

- Um...
- I've heard otherwise.

This is the lovely Michala Banas
who plays Phoebe in the show.

She's our creepy aunty.
(LAUGHS)

I thought that coming onto a show with
four teenage boys was gonna be hard work.

'Cause sometimes teenage boys
are hard work.

"And I was exactly right."

No! You know what?
They've been great.

They've been like mates and
they've formed a really nice bond

together, the four of them,

and then as someone
who comes in and out of the show,

I've just felt really
comfortable and...

They're all really good, decent guys.

Michala, as professional as she is,

she laughed out of place one time

because she heard a motorbike
and she thought it sounded like a fart.

- (LAUGHS) I remember that!
- It totally did, though!

That was in the hide-out
back there, yeah.

- It totally... It sounded like a fart.
- It did.

This is Damien.
Um... he's just awesome.

- Thanks.
- Yeah. (LAUGHS)

Let's cut that, then.
We're done here, I think.

Damien, well, he's just
been fantastic.

He's absolutely hilarious off set

and just such a great actor
to work with on set.

And to have him opposite you
just helps so much.

I think it boosts the performance
in the scene in general.

Being possessed. Well, the terminator
chicken, as they've been calling it.

Yeah, I've heard about that. (LAUGHS)
I'm not sure I had any control in that

or I even meant to do that,
to be a chicken.

I just saw Nick Coghlan,
who's playing the schoolteacher,

being possessed,

and I thought it was fantastic -
I thought he did a really good job.

So I tried to do my version of him.

But apparently it looks
more like a chicken.

At one point, Damo hissed.

I did. Well, the take had been
going on for a while.

It'd been rolling for quite a while.

So I thought, "Well, the editor's
got enough here to cut in,"

"so why not give 'em a hiss?"
"Chuck in a..." (HISSES)

I'm Sarah from Film Livestock and
this is Caroline from Film Livestock.

We've got these fine gentlemen
chasing us.

They're pretty placid
right now, but...

You know, when you see them,
their inner demons come out.

(STU DENTS SCREAM)

Fred, Deacon, Taya, come!

So we've got Fred over here.

Stay. What? Yeah.

Fred's actually mine in the TV show.

This is Taya. Her real name's Taya.

We got Duffy over here.
She's 12 weeks old.

MATT: And this is Deacon.
Is it Deacon'? Deacon.

How do you get them to attack us'?

OK, so we've had about three weeks
prep on these dogs.

So it's a process we use.

We've had some volunteers at home
that have played you guys for us

over the time that
we've been training.

So we've just taught the dogs
to run after the people.

And they've also been trained
to show aggression behaviours.

Whatever you do,
don't look him in the eye.

- How do you do that'?
- It's a lot of positive reinforcement.

So what we do is we shape
the behaviour of the dogs.

So they'll offer us maybe just
a little bit of something that we like,

maybe just a lip lift, and we
reward that and we build on it.

MATT: Can you get one of them
to growl now?

(HISSES)

Yes. Good girl!

(BOYS LAUGH)

(HISSES)

Are you guys OK'?

Well, I'm the only one that has
the same sort of physique as Russell.

He is one of our stunt men.

Mark will be fitting me
with this jerk harness here

which will throw me back
into that tree.

So that will be terrifying,

but Mark's a very safe guy
and he's gonna take care of me and...

We're gonna be alright, aren't we'?

We are going to look after
the tree, yeah.

This stuff is called skydeck.

It was insulation on
spaceships first, wasn't it?

Has been used,
and also in the US military.

Yeah, there you go.
And it's great for holding eggs.

As you can see,
you can fit one, two...

You can fit a lot of eggs in here.

We're gonna put it on the tree
and I'm gonna launch back into it.

It's kinda hard, but... you know,
I'm tough. So we'll be right.

And I do a stunt where I'll be getting
sucked up into the tornado in the sky.

And I have to hold onto that rope.
And I'm gonna go upside down.

With a woman's harness,
because I'm too small for a man's one.

(RAHART LAUGHS)

We did our own stunts yesterday,

and as you can see,
I've got some battle wounds.

As actors, we go through a lot,
and I hope you appreciate

the amount of stuff we go through...

- Shut up, Joel.
- ...to bring you a brilliant story.

You're at Millipede.

I'm Wil.
I'm the founder of the studio

and the creative
director on this project.

I'm Jason Rawlings.

I'm... l guess the technical lead
or lead programmer for Nowhere Boys.

So we've developed a story that runs
completely parallel to the TV series.

So it basically augments
the adventure of what's going on.

So it's focused on a boy
who's lost in this...

What is it? In between dimensions,
called 'negative space'.

And pretty much trying
to find a way home.

And along the way, he's realised
that the boys in the TV series

are in the same predicament and they're
actually working to help each other.

So they actually do things that influence
each other and aid each other's quests.

So, yeah, it's
an interesting premise.

An episode will play, and that will
trigger a game chapter to unlock.

So hopefully at the end of the episode,
there's a call to action

to encourage people to go on
and continue the story online.

And they can go on and the game
will be ready to play.

And, yeah, they'll see

a lot of familiar things that they've
just witnessed in the TV series

actually creep through into the game.

And then do some tasks,

and then they'll see the results actually
occur in the next episode when that airs.

What I really want,

and I think what we all
really wanted from the start

is to create something that was
unique to what's out there now

and also something that
can really get the player

into the mythology, into the big world,
of the Nowhere Boys

and then give them
that kind of satisfaction

of knowing that what
they're doing in the game

is affecting what's happening
in the show and vice versa,

so they're not stand-alone things.

You really want that connection
to be emphasised.

What we wanted to do
was take an idea,

like, take the concept of magic,
and make it very real.

I've got Felix's book of shadows.

Book of shadows.

Um, this is where
he puts all his spells.

Show him the research
that he's done on us.

So this page is Andy.

Oh, that's just his personal diary.

He just likes us a lot.

And pretty much,
Felix has written down

elements of the individual that...

...I don't know, can relate
to the magic somehow.

I'm water. Andy's water
because he's a logical thinker.

And I'm earth because I'm grounded
and that sort of thing.

- Stubborn.
- Yeah.

Sam's air because he's an airhead,
which gets mentioned in the script.

So he's quite flowing.
Just kind of flows around life.

Yep.

I think I'm fire because
I'm just angry at life.

Because you're hot.
(LAUGHS)

I'm kind ofjust angry at how my life has
turned out, angry at everyone around it.

So over here it's got
our zodiac signs.

Apparently I'm a Libra.

- I'm a Taurus.
- I'm a Leo.

So the magic's loosely
based on zodiac signs

and runes and elements.

TONY: The whole idea of the series
was that we were gonna slowly build

this sense of threat
throughout the series,

and there's this kind of
dark magical force

which is trying to eliminate the boys

from the alternate reality
that they've entered.

At one point, one of
the characters says,

"Maybe magic is just science
that you don't understand."

Or "science that you
haven't discovered."

And I think that was the central idea
that we're playing with -

that there are all of these
really interesting theories

about the multiverse,
about alternate universes,

about the ripple effect,
the butterfly effect.

And we're playing with that,

and playing with the idea that
a magical event can trigger that.

Run! Run!

The big thing that we have was a
big tornado that chases the boys.

And the tricky
thing about that is

again, we've got a limited
time to do it

and we're in, you know,
the forest of the Dandenongs,

which, you know, is not
green-screen-able, really, in the time.

So that was quite a challenge
of how to cover that in such a way

that we didn't have to
erect green screens.

Of course, technology has advanced so
much that you have options to do that.

It's just time-consuming.

So it was about finding
a part of the forest

that was kind of open enough
to give us space for a tornado

and removing the boys to one side

so the tornado gets its part of the frame
and the boys get their part of the frame.

And, you know, the tornado
gets its own shot.

Faster, nerd! Faster!

This way!

The other highlight for me is I've never
worked with visual effects before.

(LAUGHS) And that's been fantastic.

It's just been a really fun
kind of experience.

The visual effects bees are really
cool and the crows are great.

And then, you know,
visual effects helps

enhance the kind of dog threat
that we're trying to create.

So all of that is, I think,
terribly exciting.

And within the boundaries
of the world that we're in,

it kinda gives it another element,
it really makes the magic come to life.

(CAWS)

(CROWS CAW)

Yesterday consisted of
very mixed emotions.

I mean, I was excited, like,
"No more 3:45 starts! Yeah!"

(LAUGHS) But also... l knew
I was gonna miss everyone like crazy.

I don't think it'll hit me till
Monday morning when I wake up

and I'm, like, "Don't have
any lines to learn."

"Not going to work.
What am I gonna do?"

I just finished my last scene!

- It's so weird.
- Oh, yeah. How'd that feel?

I don't know. It's always, like...

You have so much fun,
and you forget that it's gonna end.

And then it ends,
and you're, like, "Ohh."

It's kinda bittersweet.

It's, like, throw-your-hat-in-the-air
accomplished, but a bit upset.

And everyone's really tired,
especially the crew.

They work all day, every day.
It's relentless.

And you guys have been studying.

Like, when I get time off, I get
to go and have a little quiet read,

a little chill-out, and they're going
straight into tutoring.

It's not fair!
But we've had a ball.

DARCI: I'm really sad
and I'll probably cry.

I've just had such a blast.
Rahart is such a gentleman.

- Oh, thank you.
- I'm a gentleman too.

(RAHART LAUGHS)

- Are we gonna keep in touch?
- Yeah.

What am I gonna miss the most?

Probably doing what I do -
the scenes and the four boys.

Except I'll see them,

It's like... l explain it as

a really, really, really awesome

And you go 'Whoa'?

Yeah, and you just
have the best time.

And it has to end. But it doesn't.
Well, it does, 'cause it's ending now.

Yeah. Today's ending is kind of like

when your mum comes over
to your friend's house,

"Alright, honey, we have to go."

"Mum, can't I just stay for..."

Yeah, no, we'll definitely
keep in contact.

We can't not - we've spent
so much time together,

we're all brothers now,
so it's good.

It was weird! Like, I saw my face
on a screen this big.

You know, my head was massive.

The crowd response was
exactly what we hoped for.

And just to have
my beautiful family here

and all my friends,
it was just something.

I was ecstatic

so big it was really scary.

is a bit of a favourite with the girls.
Is that a surprise?

Well, you know...

Yeah, it was really good!
I liked it. It was really original.

It was really good.

It's a different type of film.
I haven't seen one like that.

Yeah, I thought it had
a lot of adventure to it.

I thought it was really good
and it was really interesting.

When my mum told me about this,
I thought it was gonna be

a really old movie from,
like, the '90s or something

or, like, five people
were gonna be there.

But there was, like, so many people.

It was, like, really new.

I can't believe
it's gonna be on ABC3.

I completely loved it.

I thought it was just gonna be
some different thing, like...

...I'm not really sure,
but a totally different thing.

And then when I watched it,
I'm like,

"Oh, my God, I so wanna watch this
when it's on ABC3."

I loved it 'cause
it was really funny.

And I got a bit scared when...

'Cause there was, like,
this evil spirit thing.

And then I got scared.

I really loved it.
I really like all the characters.

And... yeah, I'm really interested
and I wanna know what happens next.

It was awesome. I'm really,
really excited about it.

Like the blonde lines
that some of the characters had.

Like eating pawpaw -
it was really funny.

Probably all the... like,
spirits and stuff.
