Carl's neck was broke.

It was as if God had meant it to be.

After that, it was obvious that
one man could not have lynched him.

So... we took him down, and...

I hit him.

'Cause I knew where and how hard.

Then we strung him back up
and went back to the house.

We never figured that
Art would be blamed.

We'd have stepped in
if you hadn't cleared him.

Uh-huh.
So what happens next?

Am I now a threat
because I know the secret?

Jessica, we all promised each other
Mary would never find out.

But Carl died.
Maybe not murder...

but he's dead because
of what you all did.

We'll go to the sheriff,
tell him what happened, stand trial.

I don't know what a jury will say.
