In this lesson we'll begin to introduce color into our sketchbooks. This is a

great way to find out what colors work best together, how color can help

enhance your designs and help you think differently and also liven up your

sketchbooks. Okay so I've got a selection of colored pens here. First thing I'm

going to do is take all the lids off. That will help me save a little bit of

time. I try and keep my color palettes kind of down to two or perhaps three

colors just because it's quicker and easier to work with. So what I'll do is

I'll just start with drawing out a few squares of the color just to help me get

a feel for which ones work best together, which ones I want to use. Try this. So
I

think I'm going to pick out three colors from this. Maybe this blue. I quite
like

this pink.

So this is just a really quick way of making a color palette.

Maybe try the purple instead.

So we've got a purple.

Yellow. Try the pink.

Okay, I think we'll stick with the blue. So we'll get rid of the purple and the
green.

And these are going to be our three colors for this first bit.

So, like the first lesson, I'm going to start with the letter A.

I'm just going to draw this out in blue.

Shade it in quickly.

And then we'll start to use the other colors around it.

So I'm just doing this quite quick.

I just want to get the feel for the color, the feel for the color combinations.

There we go.

So let's try yellow.

So I'm going to make this kind of A look 3D.

So all the edges of the A facing to the left will be yellow.

All those facing down will be pink.

Okay, I think that needs to be yellow in there.

Okay, there we go.

So let's try the next letter, let's move on to a B.

Again, I'm going to shade this in real quick, not being too precious at all.

Okay, so let's mix it up. We'll try the blue on this edge.

And now the pink.

And we'll try pink here.

Maybe we'll mix things up and do a blue up here.

There we go.

Now onto the C.

I'm just kind of alternating these colours now,

just to see if there's a combination that works best.

I'm going to shade this one in.

And these are just normal felt-tip pens.

I think whatever colours you've got, just use those.

These could be pencil as well.

You could use colouring pencils.

They'll work just as fine.

But I find with the pen, it makes a more permanent mark

and there's a bolder colour.

For me, it helps me pick my colour palettes

a bit quicker and a bit easier.

And then when you get a curved letter,

we're going to split this up.

So the shadow in the blue comes down to there.

And then we'll continue with the yellow.

for that bottom edge.

And we'll try yellow here too.

So that's a quick way of using some 3D chunky letters

in different colour combinations to try and find a colour palette

that we like and that works for us.

And then we can move on in the same process,

continue with the next letter.

And this time we'll try a slightly different technique.

So I'm just going to colour in this D.

I'll do it fairly quick.

I don't want to waste all my time colouring in.

It's the idea and the colour combinations I want to work through

not perfectly coloured in letter.

So let's try kind of offset shadow.

Making those adjustments as I go along for lines that I'm not quite happy with.

And there's our D.

We'll move on to an E for the work for the alphabet.

Let's try this. Maybe it's just a simple line for this one.

Make it a little bit wider.

There's our E.

Maybe instead of coloring this one in, we'll just do some lines.

Just do them quite quickly.

Maybe we can switch the shadow to this side.

Maybe we can make it into a kind of 3D block

and do the lines going the other way.

So we're just kind of playing around with the color,

playing around with the letters,

and using the color as a way to design the letter

that we wouldn't do with a black pen.

So we're creating more contrast, we're mixing up the colors.

Maybe let's try and switch out the blue for the purple next.

So with this one, I'm going to write the word block.

And we're going to start to overlap each of these colors to form the word.

So I'm just going to color in the shadow for this one.

Maybe we can mix it up, use the pink.

The shadow for this one could be the same colour as the previous letter,

so it looks like it's blended in nicely.

Continue that there.

I'm just going to alternate the colors.

So the shadow for this will be the pink.

Don't forget in the middle.

Back to the purple.

I think overlapping the shadows like this really helps

kind of solidify the word on the page.

Let's color this in yellow.

And finally, oh, not forgetting that bit.

Now, where are we?

Back to the pink, the final letter.

And that one is the purple.

There we go, block.

In the previous lessons, we've been looking at negative space,

and we can do that with color as well.

So here, I'm going to start building up a word,

alternating the colored pens as I go along,

which is another reason why you keep the lids off them

when you're working.

It saves you a lot of time.

Let's go back to the purple.

I'm going to slowly build up this word using just the negative space.

So, I'm imagining the letters are spelt out in white

against the colorful background here.

So, I'm having to think about the shape of the edges of each letter

as I move along.

So, some letters are easier than others,

but slowly, as we alternate the colors, the word starts to form.

So, we'll go back to the purple.

So, I'm imagining the letters are spelt out in white

Try some yellow in here, and slowly the word starts to emerge.

There we go, and instead of just colouring in, we can use patterns or cross
hatching

just to kind of mix things up a little bit.

Maybe we can use dots.

Start to be using playful patterns for our designs.

Making those adjustments as we go along,

and incorporating those adjustments,

so maybe that line that I didn't like

can become part of the pattern I'm creating.

Alternating the colors.

So here I can create a bit of tone,

where this kind of pink looks less pink,

by having the white gaps in between,

having that space.

And then we can move on to the next.

Again, using those mistakes and little mishaps along the way.

And last color.

Let's try some vertical lines.

Sometimes the best way to use color is just to alternate colors

in the same letter.

So we can start with a purple C.

We can create an O from two different colors.

And we're just slowly building up a colorful sketchbook page,

different approaches to color,

different techniques, how to use them.

Maybe you can add a bit of texture, a bit of pattern into some of these as well.

I'm now going to switch out some more colors.

Maybe I'll lose the pink for the green this time.

I'm just going to try and freestyle a few different ways

creating other letters.

So maybe we can have some lines.

Make a little adjustments as I go along.

A B.

And then we can also overlap some of these colors, so if I draw another A, B, C
here

and draw them quite tight so they overlap, then we can color in the A.

I'm going to color the V, and those parts where they overlap,

we'll just leave blank for the moment.

And then those areas where the colors overlap,

I think sometimes you'd expect to see a mix of those colors,

but maybe we can bring in a few others to the color palette

and make something a little bit more unexpected.

So green and yellow could make a pink.

Purple and green could have some blue.

And then maybe we'll finish off with some yellow there.

And this obviously isn't restricted to just serif letters.

We can be much more playful and mix up our colors in a nice script style.

So here's an N, let's make an I.

Let's go for a C. Overlap each one.

If there are any little mistakes along the way,

we can just make those small adjustments until we're happy.

Then we'll finish with the blue.

There we go, nice.
