In this lesson, you will learn to draw letters in the constraints of a pre-drawn
shape.

This exercise will help you develop your skills at manipulating letters to fit
into unexpected

shapes and layouts.

This is a great way to help you develop unexpected letter forms.

So we'll start off by drawing a series of boxes across the page, fairly random,
each

one slightly different to the previous.

So I'm just going right across the spread.

There we go, right across.

So, for the first letter, I'm going to draw an L.

This should be quite simple to fit into this space.

Just a couple of lines, we'll add a little bit of shading here

to kind of make it look a bit more prominent.

So, there's our L.

Next up, we're going to draw an E.

So, we're going to fit this one inside the shape.

There we go, using the constraints of that pre-drawn box

to dictate a little how our letterforms look.

So there's an E.

I think we'll write the word lettering across here.

So let's add a T into this one.

And we can use different shading techniques

to add a bit more contrast as we go along.

And then maybe we'll do a few different letter styles.

So another T.

Again, using as much of that box for this one as I can.

Shade that one in.

So like the previous lesson, if there's a little smudge

or a little mark that I'm not happy with,

I can use the shading just to kind of make

those little adjustments as I go along

and tweak the letter form.

Here's the T.

And so for this one, I'm going to go back

to using the negative space.

So here, I'm not so much drawing the E,

as I'm drawing the gaps around it.

And so the letter takes on almost completely

the shape of that box we've already drawn.

The opposite of that, of course, is to draw the next letter, the R,

to fit inside that shape.

So with the R, I want to have a curve, but I've got these straight lines,

so I'm going to have to use these straight lines

to manipulate where I put that curve.

So maybe that comes right across there, like that.

So I'm just going to shade in this R.

And as I finish off this R,

I've realized I haven't drawn enough boxes

across the top to fit in the word lettering.

So what I can do is, I'll draw the I here,

and I'll use that shape for the dot.

And come out and use the negative space.

So all I really need to do here is color in there,

and that should be an I.

Now I need an N and a G from this last letter.

So I need an N and a G from this last space,

so I could perhaps divide it down the middle.

Or across the center like that, maybe I'll kind of go upwards like that.

So now I need to get that N in there.

So, here we go, I've got a strange looking N fitting to that space.

There we go, just about an N.

And then this one will be the G.

I'll just draw in, color in the negative space

to create that G.

There we go, lettering.

So let's write sketchbook.

Use the same kind of techniques.

This one, we'll make an S, just with two lines.

Two colored in shapes, there we go.

There's the S.

I'll just make that one a little bit longer.

And then we can do the K.

And then the E. The E's are pretty simple.

You just need two lines coming into the shape.

You can pretty much make an E from any shape.

And now a T.

Again, fairly easy.

Maybe we can make this, color this in with dots.

And now a C. We can use the negative space again.

Maybe just a few little dark shapes on the edge to emphasise that curve.

So this next shape is going to be a pretty narrow H but again like the E all

we really need is two lines coming in so I'll bring these quite close to make
our

H

That seemed to be okay. I'm going to do a B in here, using as much of this shape
as I can.

There we go.

Use some diagonal lines to shade this in.

Now we've got two O's.

One, we'll just use the negative space for the center.

That will do.

And this one, we'll see if we can draw an O

into the complete shape of this box.

So again, just making micro adjustments when I'm shading in just to clean up my
lines,

just for my sake really.

It's not essential.

But when I look back at my sketchbooks, it just helps me to kind of see what I
was going

for when I drew that particular thing.

And then we'll finish off with a K, just a couple of triangles, and then a shape
intersecting

here.

And there we go.

That'll do for our K.

So here we've used the negative space and the positive to create our letter
designs.

We've used the boxes to influence the shape of those letters.

And we're going to go on now, draw a few more boxes, and we're going to write
our own name.

And we're going to make these boxes a bit more difficult to use, maybe add a few
curves,

and a few jagged edges, just to see if we can write our names in awkward spaces.

Again, let's do an A, I'm going to write my name, here's a crazy A, again
drawing something

I probably would have never drawn if it wasn't for that box I was constraining
myself to.

That's quite cool, the D, I think subconsciously I knew I was writing my name,
so I've made

this curve which has made it quite easy for myself, so maybe let's make this
into a lower

case D, a bit more challenging, so I can add a line there, maybe up there, and
maybe come

in here, is that a D? Maybe not, let's bring that in a bit lower, that's a bit
more of

a D, or it could be an A, either way it doesn't really matter, we can always
change that box

a little bit, if we want to change our design. This, another A.

This should be quite straightforward this time.

Just get rid of that area, add in a circle, add an M. Let's try a big M in here.

So using all of that space to draw my letter M.

And again, incorporating any little mistakes, any little lines you're unhappy
with along the way.

Or just changing the design, maybe I'll make these edges curve out a bit more.

So as I'm shading, I'm changing the letter a little bit, making those micro
adjustments as I go.

And it's a way of just developing your letters as you're working along, so I'm
not really overthinking this stuff.

I'm trying to get my ideas out as efficiently as possible, making those small
changes as I go along.

And if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. It doesn't really matter.

I quite like that M. So maybe I can now take that M, take it out of that box,

maybe redraw it slightly, make a few little changes, and this M could now be

the start of a whole new alphabet, or maybe a typeface, or maybe I can

incorporate it into a poster design I have to do at some point. So this M has

basically started life in one of these boxes, been designed with lots of

restrictions, and now I'm left with a letter M I probably never would have

drawn otherwise. So I'm just going to shade this in, and use these lines to

quickly get the ink down.

Making those small little adjustments as I go along, make these points much
sharper.

and actually the texture you get from shading in can sometimes help make the

letters look a bit 3D, make them jump off the page a little bit, so we can

incorporate a little bit of that as we build up our design.

So I'm just going to finish off this M, add a few more little tweaks and
changes, just

where the pen has not put as much ink down, where it's running out slightly, can
incorporate

all those types of marks, just tweak things, and so I'm kind of happy with how
it looks.

Maybe I can add a few more curves, there we go, and then maybe even we can make
it really

leap off the page with a few lines, making it look a bit more 3D.

There we go, it's an M. I probably never would have drawn if it wasn't for
drawing those

pre-described boxes beforehand, making those restrictions for myself, and using
that as

a way of creating something totally new.

In this lesson you've set yourself design constraints with boxes across the

page and use these to aid your creativity. As you've now created your

own name in this style we can move on to the next lesson where we'll continue to

create words with the fun and energetic style.
