On the other hand, I've heard
an AI rendition, a fake song,

of Andrea Bocelli singing
"My Neck, My Back."

And, listen, it was
beautiful, but it was wrong.

It was wrong.

But in terms of human artists,
no one got more nominations

this year than SZA.

And tonight-- tonight--

she'll be performing
the year's most catchy

song about a double homicide.

I cannot wait.

And speaking of
killing it, yo, can we

acknowledge for a
second how women have

dominated music this year?

Solo Performance for
a song originally

sung by one of his heroes.

This is Luke Combs.

Ford F-150 pickup truck.

My dad would play me that Tracy
Chapman self-titled album.

That song, "Fast Car," it was
my favorite song before I even

knew what a favorite song was.

The idea to do "Fast Car"--

I've been playing
that song since I

could play guitar, honestly.

I just love that song.

So when I went into the
studio to record my most

recent record, which
was getting old,

and I was like,
what if we just did

this cover of "Fast Car," just
because I wanted to do it.

I'm not doing it
for anybody else.

I'm just doing it for me.

Tracy's obviously
written one of the best

songs for a few generations.

Once you finally

is super humbling for me.

at the Grammys is a blessing.

happened in my entire career.

Joni is one of the

to reflect the contents
of a person's soul.

And before she took this
leap, the popular song

was observational.

It was brilliant and
influential, of course.

But the exhilarating
risk that we all now

take by turning ourselves
inside-out for all the world

to see started, as
far as I can tell,

with Joni Mitchell
doing it first.

She's like the first person
to strip down at the skinny

dipping party and take
that awkward terrifyingly

before everybody else
eventually joyfully follows.

In some ways, she
didn't have a choice

but to take these leaps.

She was too preoccupied
with basic survival,

surviving poverty, polio,
and as of 10 years ago,

a near-fatal brain aneurysm.

She didn't dwell too much on
how her art was being received

because she was
too busy relearning

to speak, let alone sing.

She's learned to
walk three times.

Joni just turned
80, my friends.

But we all know she's timeless.

She's timeless.

If we're so lucky that
history remembers any of us,

one thing I know
for sure is that it

will remember that we lived
in the time of Joni Mitchell.

Today, she just won the Grammy
for Best Folk Album 56 years

into her singular career.

a first on the Grammy stage.

We'll see the superstar
from Nigeria, Burna Boy.

Grammys to winners

world, all the while

guided through this evening
by our fantastic South

African host.

Tonight, we celebrate
the world of music.

Every one of us, no
matter where we're from,

is united by the shared
experience of music.

It brings us together
like nothing else can.

And that's why music must
always be our safe space.

When that's violated, it
strikes at the very core

of who we are.

We felt that at the Bataclan
Concert Hall in Paris.

We felt that at the
Manchester Arena in England.

We felt that at the Route
91 Harvest Music Festival

in Las Vegas.

And on October 7, we
felt that again when

we heard the tragic news from
the Supernova Music Festival

for Love, that over 360
music fans lost their lives,

and another 40 were kidnapped.

That day, and all the tragic
days that have followed,

have been awful for the world
to bear as we mourn the loss

of all innocent lives.

We live in a world
divided by so much,

and maybe music can't
solve everything.

But let us all
agree, music must

remain the common ground
upon which we all stand,

together in peace and harmony.

Because music has always been
one of humanity's

greatest connectors.

Think about it.

Every song that we're
honoring or hearing tonight

moved someone.

No matter where they were
from or what they believed,

it connected them to others
who were moved in the same way.

Take this string quartet.

As individuals, they
sound really good.

But together, they achieve
something beautiful

they could never do apart.

These musicians of Palestinian,
Israeli, and Arab descent

are here playing together.

There was a binder that I
made to take this really

important meeting at a label.

And I thought I was
going to be signed.

artist with no team.

But that binder left collecting
dust in an office in a label.

And Rachelle found that binder.

And she decided to take a
chance, leave that label,

and be my manager.

I kind of suffered
with songwriting.

For my 35th birthday, my wife
made it her mission to try

to get me to meet Billy Joel.

And eventually, she found a
doctor who knew another doctor

who once knew Billy Joel.

Somehow he got him
to agree to meet me.

So I said, OK.

I was going to go have lunch.

I'll talk with this kid,
and then that'll be that.

- When I got there,
it was pretty

clear that Billy
had no intention

of spending any time with me.

He ordered clams on the
half shell and a BLT to go.

- The place we went to,
they have great clams.

- A 10-minute lunch turned into
two and a half hours, and we

became unlikely friends.

- And then as time
went on, he was

starting to get me to
think about writing

a song and recording.

It took him a while
to talk me into it.

It took two years.

- You want me to
try singing this?

- Yeah.
What do you mean?

- The guy was--

I don't want to say relentless.

I was relentless.

And I did a recording.

And I listened back,
and I didn't hate

my voice, which I usually do.

When I go out in the studio
and I sing and then I come

back and listen, I'm like, oh.

It's me again.

So this is actually the first
time I'm doing it in 30 years.

The whole point
of doing what I do

was because it was so much fun
to do when I first started.

I kind of lost
that after a while.

Freddie got me to find
the joy in it again.
