a brutal
early morning shooting

At a courthouse in delaware.

- He was firing back in
our general direction.

I couldn't let him get outside.

a mother in
a bitter custody dispute

With her unhinged ex.

- He saw the world from
his perspective only,

And you could not
change his mind.

- He has kidnapped the kids and
she's not getting them back.

and in-laws
who will do anything

To get what they want.

- This family feud
started with an obsession.

- In their view, she
just wasn't good enough.

- She was being followed

And she was concerned
about her safety

And the safety of her children.

- They've taken the kids.

Are they going to
take care of the kids?

- That Monday morning,
I had taken a position

Behind one of the x-ray machines

To prepare to get
everyone into the building

For the court procedures,

And gunshots ring out,
people screaming, yelling.

- The courthouse lobby
is teaming with people,

All kinds of people.

They all panicked.

- I stepped around from
where my position was at.

I could see there was
a man chasing a woman.

He opened fired on
her, took shots at her.

One of our officers
was in close proximity

And gunman turns and
shoots him and strikes him.

Then the shooter turns towards
another woman and chased her

And shot her several
times in her upper torso.

- And what we see happen
then is a gun battle

Between the court security
officers and the shooter.

- He was firing back in
our general direction

Back towards the screening area.

The shooter was then trying

To get towards the
parking garage.

I couldn't let him get outside.

He knew that I was pursuing him.

He started shooting towards me.

He made his way towards
the side entrance

And that's when I cut him off,

And we had our exchange
in the revolving door.

I shot back through this
glass revolving door

And I struck him in his
chest and up in the shoulder.

The problem was the glass
on this revolving door

Started to spiderweb.

So, now I can't see in there.

I was trying to give
him commands to say,

"put the firearm down."

- This man, while
he's standing there

Takes a gun and
blows his head off.

- I found the suspect
on the ground.

He was not moving.

There was no signs of life.

That's when someone noticed

The pocket on my shirt
had been blown off.

I was struck.

So, I was wearing
a bulletproof vest.

I had reached
underneath the vest,

And I had no injuries.

I went back into the lobby area

To check the subjects
who were down.

I could see the one
subject, she was deceased.

The other one was taking
her final breaths.

police are
able to identify the victims

By looking through
their belongings.

They identify christine
belford, age 39,

And laura mulford, age 47.

- At that point, the
call had gone out.

- So, every agency in the county

Responded to the courthouse.

- I arrived at the courthouse.

One of my captains
came up to me.

He says, "one of the victims
is christine belford."

That shocked me.

And my first thought was, where
was david, the ex-husband?

I investigated that family
for a couple years prior

And it was an ugly custody
battle between the two,

And I thought he would
know what's going on here.

And her ex-husband, david,

Had been in a heated and
violent dispute over custody.

The battle escalated
to such heights

That it caught the
attention of the press.

- I was in the newsroom and
we heard over the scanner

That there was a shooting.

One of the reporters
came over and he goes,

"hey, I heard it
had something to do

With that woman you
wrote about for years."

So, I called christine belford,

And it rang and rang
and it just dawned on me

Like it struck me
like a thunderclap.

Like, oh my god, she's one
of the ones who's dead.

And it just to think
that she was lying there

In a pool of blood,
it was just awful.

- Christine belford
grew up in wilmington.

She played tennis
when she was younger.

She went to business college
and got a secretarial degree.

- Christine was very
catholic, very religious.

She ended up teaching
at st. John the beloved,

A local catholic parish
here in wilmington.

- She had been married in her
early twenties, had a child.

She was a nice decent woman.

in 1998,
after four years,

The marriage fizzles.

It's an amicable split,

And christine remains close
friends with her ex-husband.

- She said they got along
better after the divorce

Than they did when
they were married.

She really had an
easygoing persona.

I never remember her saying
a bad word about anybody.

in
the spring of 1999,

Christine starts dating
david matusiewicz,

Who is six years her senior.

- David matusiewicz
grew up in new jersey.

He went to optometry school

And bought an
optometry business.

- Christine met david,

Because she went to work
in his optometrist practise

And his first marriage
had come to an end

And her first marriage
came to an end,

So they began seeing each other.

David was very successful,

He was pretty articulate,
well-educated man.

- She was enamoured of david,
really in love with david.

two years of dating,

The couple got married
in a lavish ceremony

At a local estate, and spent
a romantic honeymoon in maui.

- Three kids came
out pretty fast

And they bought a house
in nice country suburb.

They were just living a
nice upper middle class life

Of a couple in their thirties.

She thought she was
living a dream life.

despite all the joy

In the matusiewicz marriage,

David's parents
are not supportive

Of his relationship
with christine.

- Lenore matusiewicz,
david's mother,

Had some background
in education.

- Lenore, she was
a very tough woman.

- David's father,
thomas matusiewicz,

Is militaristic in a
way that is unhealthy.

- He was a former
police officer.

- The matusiewicz family
would never be satisfied

With anyone who
was in david's life

Unless that person
looked, acted,

And thought exactly like
they did about everything.

in 2003, when
the couple's second daughter

Is just two months old,

David's parents move
into the family home.

- His parents couldn't
afford at that point

To live on their own.

They'd had some hard times.

- When thomas and
lenore moved in,

They took control of the kids

And how the kids
should be raised.

Christine felt like she
had been kicked to the curb

As far as how to deal
with her children.

It caused a big riff
between christine and david.

Her biggest complaint
was thomas and lenore.

after
the in-laws move in

Christine's home life
rapidly deteriorates

And the situation
becomes dangerous.

Years later, she meets with a
journalist to tell her story.

- I never knew someone who
I wrote about for years

Who got murdered.

She talked to me
about a lot of things

- Christine
experienced depression

And david had trouble
coping with that issue.

She had to go on medication,
some antidepressants.

He didn't like that.

- One of the
children had autism,

Or at least was suspected of it.

- How to treat autism.

That was a a point of
contention between them.

The marriage was coming
apart at that point,

Because of that.

- After five years married,
new year's eve going into 2006,

David was sort of brooding,
sitting there by himself,

And she walked up to him
and sat down with him

And he poured two
glasses of bourbon.

And she told me at one point
that he was talking about

How, you know, he
could take people out

And they would never find them.

- David told her that
he could bury her

Where no one could find
her, and that scared her.

- That was sort of the
breaking point for her,

And it unravelled pretty
quickly from there.

- David has become
unpredictable.

He's with his mother, who
is a known antagonist.

- Christine's beside herself.

She doesn't know what to do.

- I'll never give up, and
we will find these children.

in January,

And three daughters together
under the age of six,

David and christine's marriage
hits a breaking point.

So, christine decides
to take a stand.

- She decided to leave him,
and she filed for a divorce.

- Christine hired me to
represent her for divorce.

She just wanted a fair
share of the marital estate.

Her share of the
equity in the home,

And a fair arrangement
for the three young girls,

And that was it, she just did
not want to tear him apart.

- She said she was
trying to move on

From a strange
marriage, crazy in laws.

- At that point, she
decided the best thing to do

Was for her to move
out of the house

Rather to try to force him out.

And not to take the
children with her,

So she'd moved in with
one of her grandmothers.

After christine moved
out of the house,

David had his parents
living with him again.

- David and christine
had to come up

With some custody
agreement for the kids.

- We got the word back that
david didn't want her involved.

He then pursued a
policy of trying

To marginalise christine
as much as possible,

Limiting the contact she
had with the children,

Not including her in
any decision making
about the children.

This was a way of saying
that he didn't need her.

And things got worse.

When christine would
visit the children,

And at one point she reported
that david's father, thomas,

Had shoved her up against
a wall and threatened her.

as the
turmoil between christine

And her estranged in-laws
continues to mount,

David decides to
change his tactics

To gain control of the children.

- Through the custody
battle, david made a claim

That christine was not
fit to be a mother.

She had some
psychological issues,

And at which point
the court ordered

Psychological evaluations
of christine and of david.

It actually, turned out that
christine was doing very well

And david was the one
losing touch with reality.

- The psychologist said that

David displayed a characteristic
called perceivery.

In layman's terms,
he saw the world

From his perspective only,

And you could not
change his mind.

David likely viewed everybody
who wouldn't agree with him

As a potential enemy.

- In February of 2007,
they finally got divorced.

- The court decides
that the parents

Should have shared
custody of the children.

David's outlook
seemed a bit odd,

But it wouldn't cause the
court to deny him custody.

- In early summer of 2007,
christine finally got

Where she could have the
children living with her.

Then in August of that year,

David said that he was
gonna take the children

On a vacation to
disney world in florida

With his mother, lenore,

And that he would
have them back in time

For the oldest girl
to begin kindergarten,

Which would be at the
beginning of September.

christine
agrees to the trip

And drops them off
with david and lenore

On the morning of
August 26th, 2007.

- They left, and it was supposed
to be like a two-week trip.

two days
after they leave,

Christine gets a call.

- She received one phone
call from the oldest daughter

Who at that time was five
years old by cell phone

And they were in the vehicle
driving at that time.

- The oldest girl told her,

"we're driving I don't
know where we are,

But we just keep driving
and I'm tired of driving."

The daughter seemed
a little confused.

Christine, she told me
she calls the next day,

Phone starts going
straight to voicemail.

- So, she calls
the vision centre,

And they said, "david hasn't
come back to work yet."

So, now she's
really freaking out.

- She is worried about
the girls' safety

And about whether she's ever
going to see them again.

David has become unpredictable.

He's with his mother, who
is a known antagonist.

with no
other options available,

Christine calls the police

And files a missing
person's report.

- I was assigned as
the missing person's

Investigator for the case.

One of the first things I did,

I tried calling
david's cell phone

And it went straight
to voicemail.

the day
after he takes the case,

Christine follows up
with detective shriner

About a discovery
she's just made

Through david's
business partner.

- Christine goes down to
the the vision centre,

And while she's there, david's
partner tells christine

That she recently had bought
the business from him.

- I actually went there
and spoke to the new owner

And she had told me she had
purchased the optometry business

First at around $900,000.

So, he had a very, very
large cache of money,

Cash to go on the run.

when detectives
follow up at his house,

They find more evidence that
david has no plans to return.

- The neighbours told me that
they had trucks and trailers

Moving their furniture and
everything outta there.

If he had planned on
coming back to delaware,

Why would he be moving
stuff out of the house?

So, with that information,

I was able to obtain a search
warrant for the residence

And went in and found that,
yes, the house was vacant.

And when I was conducting
the search of the house,

I saw they were burning
in the fireplace.

I looked in the fireplace,
nothing but ashes.

The only thing that was not
burned up in that fireplace

Was christine and
david's divorce papers.

All that combined said to me,

He's really bitter
about the situation

And he's not coming back.

I was able to collect enough
probable cause and evidence

To swear out a felony warrant

For three counts of parental
abduction against david.

- David and lenore,
they've taken the kids.

Are they going to
take care of the kids?

That's an open question.

- I told christine,
"I'll never give up

And we will find
these children."

We figured david and
lenore went off the radar,

Didn't wanna be tracked.

They have a two-week
headstart on me.

They got a lot of
money, they got time.

Here we go.

police
are on the hunt

For christine belford's
three young daughters

Who were abducted two weeks
earlier by their father,

David matusiewicz and
his mother, lenore.

- I was able to enlist the help

Of our us marshals
to search countrywide

And if need be, go outside the
border of the united states.

- The police are also
looking for digital clues,

Financial transactions,
toll records,

Anything that they could find
to locate these individuals.

- I got david's
cell phone records.

There was nothing
after a certain date.

And so again, that
just kept pointing me

Towards he's not coming back.

as detective
shriner continues looking

For any traces of david,
lenore, and the three girls,

Christine unravels at home.

- The not knowing, she was
worried about their wellbeing.

It was just an
awful time for her.

- Christine had her child
from another marriage.

The other child was older
and knew what was going on,

But she tried to keep everything

As normal as she could
for the older girl.

I can't imagine what
she went through.

Think of yourself, think
of having your children

Taken away that's terrible.

while christine's
concerns increase by the day,

Detective shriner looks for
answers from david's family,

Starting with david's father

Who lives nearby in
smyrna, delaware.

- I asked him the
standard questions of,

"where did your son and
wife and grandchildren go?"

He was very vague.

He was very unconcerned.

If my wife and
grandchildren were missing

And the police
were looking at it,

I would do everything
I could to help.

He could care less.

My thoughts is he's
gonna eventually

Join them wherever they wind up.

Also found out david has
a sister, amy gonzalez.

I drove over to new
jersey and spoke with amy.

Amy had the same demeanour
as thomas, her dad.

She didn't show no concern.

Through looking at
amy's demeanour,

Yeah, I thought this
was a family plan

And they're not gonna cooperate.

while
the matusiewicz family

Appears suspiciously
unconcerned,

A panicked christine
reaches out to authorities

With alarming information.

- Christine found out
that the marital home

Was in default on the mortgage.

David had taken out $249,000
of equity of the house.

He managed to forge
christine's signature.

This was essentially,

Fraud committed by
david against the bank.

- Following some of that money,

It went to the
parents' bank accounts.

So, at that point,
we subpoenaed thomas

And lenore's bank accounts.

That's when we found
the purchase of the rv.

- Now, law enforcement knows

That david, lenore
and the girls,

They have the ability to travel

And they have mobile shelter.

- We had the delaware
licence plate number.

We put that alert on that.

- They were pulling
out all the stops

To try to find
where the kids were.

But this had gone
on for two months

And christine's beside herself,
she doesn't know what to do.

She can't find them,

But there's nothing
out in the public eye.

So, I sat down and
talked to christine

To get the story out there.

- Wilmington news journal
finally published our big story.

It had been five months since
he had disappeared with them.

She went through this for months

Of wondering where her kids
were and that was her life.

while the
article makes national news,

Detective shriner receives
surprising information

About david's father,
thomas, and his sister, amy.

- Thomas and amy moved to texas.

If he was overly concerned

About his wife, and
grandkids, and son,

Why would you move and not tell
the lead investigator that,

"hey, if you come up with
anything, here's where I'll be."

- So, at that point, we
began what are called

Pen trap and trace orders to
track the email communications

Of the matusiewicz
family members.

another
year would pass

Before the next
lead on the case.

When the us marshals get a hit

On their high-tech
tracing software.

- They were able to see
email communications

Were resolving to internet
connections in south america.

- Investigators discover
david's sister, amy,

Made a call to a real estate
agent in managua, nicaragua.

So, they went to the
real estate agent

With pictures of david,
and lenore, and the kids.

And they said, "yeah, do
you know these people?"

And the real estate agent said,

"yeah, but heir name's
not matusiewicz.

Their name's blanco, tomas
blanco and and his children."

But the authorities
knew that this was them.

- It was an evening
where our detective

Assigned to the us
marshals calls me and says,

"we found them.

We need to go notify christine

So she can get on a
plane to nicaragua."

We went to her
house and told her.

She was very excited.

She hugged me.

I told her she has to get a
plane reservation in nicaragua.

Get it tonight,

'cause you're gonna be
on the plane tomorrow.

on
March 12th, 2009,

Christine and the authorities
fly out to nicaragua

To find the matusiewicz family.

- So, they all go down, and
the authorities find them.

They're living on
some like barren lot.

- There was no fight.

And they took david
and lenore into custody

Without any type of incident.

- Christine, she's overjoyed,

But she's a little horrified
when she sees her children.

The oldest daughter
has lost 30 pounds,

And she's only a
seven-year-old kid.

The other daughter, her
teeth are so abscessed

That she's gonna need surgery.

- When the eldest child is
reunited with christine,

She says, "you're alive."

Christine says, "of
course, I'm alive."

And it becomes clear
through their conversations

That david had told her
daughter when she was kidnapped,

That christine had
committed suicide.

It's a very, very devious,
evil thing to say to a child.

- Christine is happy.

A year and a half later,
she's got her kids back.

back in delaware,

Christine's daughter
struggled to adjust

After 19 months apart
from their mother.

- Chris had told me that
upstairs she had two bedrooms

And she put the
oldest girl in one.

She put the younger
two in the other,

And when she woke
up in the morning,

The three that had been
through this ordeal

Were all in together.

And after that, she had to
set the bedroom up for three,

Because they wouldn't
be separated.

nine months
after being located abroad,

David pleads guilty to
kidnapping and bank fraud.

- He faced up to
30 years in prison,

But because of he had
never been in any trouble,

He got four years
in federal prison.

Lenore also pleaded guilty.

She got 18 months
for her crimes.

I thought they both
got off pretty easy.

I mean, taking three kids

And leading them on
an 18-month odyssey,

Making the mother
suffer like that.

Is that all that's worth?

- Christine makes a decision.

She decides she's
actually gonna fight back.

- Whenever I talked to
her, she was strong,

She didn't break down.

on
January 8th, 2010,

Christine files a
motion in family court

And successfully terminates
david's parental rights,

Eliminating any access
he has to the children.

- That termination
would likewise terminate

The grand parental rights of
thomas and lenore matusiewicz.

The result of that
court decision is a
dramatic escalation

In the matusiewicz course
of criminal conduct.

the matusiewicz
family is enraged

After christine wins
the court battle

To remove her three
daughters from their lives.

- There was this multi-pronged
effort after that

To defame her and
to make her appear

To be someone who she was not.

- That's when they started
putting together this dossier

That eventually
became this website

Called "a grandmother's
impossible choice".

- It's a story that lenore
largely writes from a jail cell,

And that becomes the narrative

That the matusiewicz's actions

Were wholly justified
out of concern

For the welfare of the children.

So, they would do
things like print out

A copy of the
website and mail it,

Or type letters that had the
allegations from the website

And send them to christine's
friends, to her family,

To her employers, to her church.

And what emerges is
christine recoils,

It chills her, she
stops engaging.

This is having the
intended effect

Of disrupting her daily life.

- I never saw them going
to church after that.

And before that, she
had been quite active.

- They also had an investigator
followed christine around.

And then david's sister,
amy, posted youtube videos

Of surveillance
outside of her house.

- One of the children wandered
out towards the street

And she stopped them

And that was all they
got on christine.

If that's the worst
you can say about her,

She was pretty good.

- Christine's
therapist had recorded

A number of therapy
sessions with christine,

With her consent,

Where she talked at length about

The impact that the
matusiewicz's conduct

Was having on her and the girls.

- She had no family.

Her mother had
died not long ago.

Her father was very old.

There were no
brothers and sisters.

There was nobody,
it was just her.

But the whole
neighbourhood knew about

What was going on and
we keep an eye on 'em.

She told me she had
to let the girls have

As much of a normal
childhood as she could.

And when my
granddaughter was over,

They would play together.

in September, 2010,

Lenore is released from prison

And moves to texas to
be with thomas and amy.

Despite the distance,
back in delaware,

Christine continues to worry

For her and her
children's safety

And does what she
can to protect them.

- Christine had put in cameras,

She had done things to
make the house secure.

She was that concerned.

- Christine slept with
a bat next to her bed.

She was extremely concerned.

They all were
extremely concerned

That the matusiewiczs
were coming for them.

a year and a half
after his mother's release,

David's time in
prison nears an end,

After which he'll be out
on supervised release.

- Christine had called
me multiple times,

Fearing that once he gets out,

He may try to abduct
the kids again.

in September, 2012,

David matusiewicz is
released from prison

And moves to texas to
live with his parents.

- He's out, he's free,

But he remains essentially
under the supervision

Of the federal
probation department.

- A large amount of child
support had accumulated,

While he was in prison,

And he wanted to not have to pay

Any of that back to christine.

So, he filed this
petition to terminate

His obligation to
pay that money back.

- The court hearing
is scheduled.

Christine is notified
that she has to appear

In court with david, who
she has not seen in years.

She does not wanna
go to the hearing,

And she's told she has
to come to the hearing.

David goes to the united
states probation office

And says, "I've been
ordered to appear in court

For a hearing on my
child support payments,

And I need permission

To travel to delaware
for that purpose."

What he doesn't tell
the probation office

Is that his mother and father

Are going to travel
with him to delaware.

the morning
of February 11th, 2013,

Christine drops
her girls at school

And heads to the courthouse.

- Beth mulford, a neighbour
and very good friend of hers,

Offered to come with
her to support her.

- Christine walks in with beth

And they're getting ready
to go through the line,

And then someone
walks right up to 'em,

Fires shots right
through their bodies.

They're killed pretty
much instantly.

news of
the courthouse murders

Quickly travels
through the community.

- When I heard that she
was dead, it was just,

I don't know, I was numb,

Because it was just, you can't
believe that could happen.

And then to find out her friend

That went with her was killed.

I was hoping it was wrong.

- Beth mulford was this
wonderful supporting friend

Who gave her life in service
of christine that day.

the courthouse
lobby is in chaos

After the cold-blooded killings.

- People who were in there
were still lying on the ground,

Were hunkered against the wall.

You could smell the gunpowder

And the haze just
hung in the air.

I had been struck and the
other officer had been struck.

They had taken us by ambulance

To the hospital
to be checked out.

Our officers, through
identification
that he had on him,

Were able to identify the
gunman as thomas matusiewicz.

- They approached me and said,

"the shooter was
thomas matusiewicz,"

Who I knew to be david's father.

with the revelation
that thomas matusiewicz

Is the deceased shooter,

Detective shriner
turns his attention

To christine's
estranged husband,

Who he knows is on the scene.

- We had to find where
david matusiewicz was.

That was my number one goal.

I walked down to
the grand jury room

Where the civilians and
employees were placed

And found that david
was one of the ones

The group that was getting
released to go outside to leave.

So, I ran over to the escalator.

He was at the bottom
of the escalator,

Getting ready to head through

The back door of the courthouse.

At that point, I
yelled down, "david,"

He looked up, turned around,
and walked back to us.

david
is quickly escorted

To a private room in the
courthouse for questioning.

aware
of their backstory,

Police have a hard
time believing david

Was uninvolved in the shooting.

- David is arrested on
a petition for violation

Of his federal probation,

Because he has
travelled to delaware

With his parents
without court approval.

He did not have approval
for his parents to be there.

Law enforcement is able
to locate their car.

They don't know whether
it's booby trapped.

Robots have pulled out of
the car, clothes, weapons.

We found three sets of handcuffs

In successively smaller sizes,

Putting one set of thumb cuffs

That would fit a
very small child.

after seeing
the contents of the car,

Authorities quickly realised
christine's children

Need immediate protection
from the remaining members

Of the matusiewicz family.

- I told the investigators,
we have to find the kids

And get them into our
custody so they'll be safe.

I know they're a
tight-knit family

That does what they have to
do for each family member.

I knew lenore was willing to
go to prison for these kids.

authorities are rushing

To protect christine belford's
unsuspecting children

Before the remaining members

Of her ex-husband's
family find them.

- The delaware state police
go to the kids' schools

And actually, pull
them outta class

And take them into protective
custody from school that day.

And the girls,
they're taken away

From their older sister,
their half-sister,

Who's become very
important in their lives.

They've lost their mother.

They have no family really left,

And you know, they're
out there on their own.

the day
after the shooting,

Police head to the location

Where the matusiewicz family
stayed the previous night

And locate david's
mother, lenore.

- State police found
lenore in maryland

And brought her to
police headquarters.

- When lenore was interviewed
by law enforcement agents,

Her immediate concern was
not for tom or for david,

Her concern was for the kids.

She said, "we've gotta get
to the kids right away."

lenore denies any
involvement in the shootings

And claims that her husband,
thomas, acted on his own.

So, police have no
choice but to release her

Until contradictory
evidence is uncovered.

- Now, during this
period of time,

Lenore and amy were
not in custody.

They were back in texas.

They were continuing to engage

In activity relating to
this stalking campaign.

Lenore was recording
youtube videos.

- One of the things
they're saying is that

Tom planned all along
to kill christine

And that david and
I knew about it.

That is absolutely wrong.

- This was all part
of a course of conduct

By the matusiewicz family

Designed to repossess
these children.

They were viewed as possessions

And killing christine was
not the ultimate goal.

Repossessing the children
was the ultimate goal.

So, we concluded
that the only way

To ensure that these kids could
remain safe into the future

Was going to be to prosecute
the entire matusiewicz family.

The state made a decision,
in light of thomas's death

And he being the shooter,

That they were not gonna
proceed on state murder charges

Against david, lenore, and amy,

Because they weren't
the trigger people.

We then really focused
on the cyber stalking,

Resulting in death theory.

- It was a new federal crime.

No one had ever been
prosecuted on that before.

- We had to show
that death resulted

From this group of people
who had an agreement,

A common criminal objective,

To cyber stalk
christine belford.

And to use all of these tools

Of the internet as
weapons to do so.

days before
david is scheduled

To be released from prison,

The district attorney
obtains an indictment,

And david, lenore,
and amy are arrested.

- David was charged with

Internet stalking
resulting in death,

And his sister, amy,
and his mother, lenore,

Were charged also

started with an obsession.

rollercoaster ride,

And I'm glad that I
helped find the children.

It's just sad, I couldn't
protect mom in the end.
