The story is set during
the reign of
Maria Theresa in Vienna

The park is still asleep.

The statues dream in
their alcoves of foliage.

The city far away
has come to rest.

Only the lovers keep watch.

And the Marshall's wife
can find no sleep.

Octavian, Count of Rofrano,
the young man of noble origin

is also awake

On a beautiful morning
in the year of 1750

a knight rode in great haste

to the palace of Baron von Lerchenau.

"Where can I find His Most Esteemed
Highness

Mr. Baron von Lerchenau?"

Baron Ochs [ox] von Lerchenau - of
venerable decent, yet impovrished.

"A letter?"

"From Vienna?"

"Somone shall bring
me the messenger!"

"Someone shall give the
messenger a drink!"

... we would like to inform
His Grace

in all confidence, about a
worthwhile party.

The girl is a true angel and
has just left the convent

and she is the sole heiress of the
rich army supplier

Mr von Faninal ...

Her father has only just been elevated
into hereditary peerage, but he owns

twelve houses in Vienna, a palace in the
city and on top of that a great
estate in the country.

By the way, his health is not the best.
We salute your highness.

"One Shall prepare my carriage!

Early tomorrow I must go to Vienna."

After a long nights journey,
the baron approaches Vienna.

"My room shall be immediately prepared!
I must attend upon my cousin,

Princess Werdenberg."

"Dear cousin, I came into the city
to ask for a lady's hand.

I am prepared to exchange my venerable
title and blue blood against the common
wealth of her father."

"Certainly, Mr. von Faninal has just
recently been elevated into
hereditary peerage,

but he supplies the whole army

and besides a palace and houses in Vienna
he owns a few country estates -

and he is also ill."

"That is why I rush to you, noble cousin

in order to ask for your help

to choose a Knight of the Rose."

"Your court ladies, hair dressers,
merchants of all type, the cook

and your poor relatives
are reverently waiting

to be received - additionaly if I may.
the allowed time has already passed."

Annina is always happy about
court intrigues -

regardless if she discovers or
invents scandals.

Only one thing is worse than a scheming woman

- a scheming man.

Valzacchi and Annina
make a spledid pair.

"Open the courtian if you would
like to see the princess' lover!"

"My beauty, have you ever dined

with a man of noble heritage?"

"Mariandl, get over here!"

"Go immediately to the Rofrano Palace

and inform Count Oktavian

that he is expected here tomorrow morning."

"I have decided that Count Oktavian
shall be her Knight of the Rose!"

"If you are free tonight, my darling

then send a note to the tavern
"The White Steed"."

The High Committe,
named by her apostolic Majesty

Queen Maria Theresa
watches over morals and virtue.

"Since when does a chambermaid
wear a gentelman's cuff?"

The High Committe, appointed by her Majesty the Queen

empowers you with insistence to
most carefully continue to investigate.

Many miles away the prince fights
for the ultimate victory.

Spring connects the aristocratic
world of Vienna

in a small outdoor tavern

where rural festivities are a
fashionable way to pass time.

"Who is that beautiful young lady?`"

"It is the daughter of a rich,
newly made nobleman."

"Why doesn't the pretty girl
want to take part in our game?"

"Her nobility is too young...

she has to wait a little while...

at least one or two hundred years..."

"Would the young lady
want to play with us?"

"A kiss!" -- "A kiss!"

"Have you introduced yourself to
cousin Ochs

as the Knight of the Rose,
as I have asked you?"

"Tomorrow, my cousin,
I will allow myself

to present a silver Rose
to Miss Faninal...!"

"Who was this girl?"

"It was Sophie,
the daughter of Mr. von Faninal

your princely Grace..."

The day on which the
silver rose is handed over

has finally arrived.

The house of Mr. Faninal

is full of excitement.

"According to etiquette

the father of the bride
has to be out of the house

the silver rose approaches."

"Precisely eleven minutes

after the Knight of the Rose enters

the father must return

to present the bride to the groom."

The great moment.

"I imagined the knight of the rose

The next day,

the princess retires to the
loneliness of her country estate

from the sight of the curious.

to a masked ball
on the 11th of may.

The party.

"Your grace, according to
your wishes

A lady is expecting you
in Diana's pavillion..."

a certain heart would break with grief..."

"Leave me, Count Oktavian.
Your love leaves me cold.

The wedding with Baron von Lerchenau
will take place this week."

"What mask does the
princess wear?"

"Find out. I have to know!"

with the masks of all the guests --

however, the mask of mylady
princess is not on it..."

Oktavian listens to his heart and feels

that he can leave Sophie
to no-one else.

With the help of Cupid's arrows
he prepares a scheme

in order to trump the Baron.

Come to Diana's pavillion in an hour
and bring your father.

You will then see that
you don't have to marry the Ochs.

Did Your Grace forget about Marianne,
the chambermaid of Mrs. Marshall?

Diana's pavillion is nice and dark
and no-one will see you...

This is where the existing film ends.

the ochs falls in the trap

Caught red handed
during his amorous adventure

Ochs is the laughing stock
of all the guests.

Ochs flees to the garden,

after denouncing his engagement
to Faninal's daughter.

Oktavian confesses
to the lady Marshall

his love for Sophie.

She arranges a secret rendezvous
for a last talk with Oktavian

at the pavillion and dismisses him.

Annina whispers to the lady Marshall
that the Marshall has arrived

and he knows everything.

The lady Marshall hurries
to warn Oktavian

to warn Oktavian
about the Marshall

and is caught in a band
of masked guests.

Valzacchi reveals to the Marshall

the lady Marshall, wearing a
striped Domino

rushes to meet Oktavian
in the Pavillion.

Annina thinks up a plan
with Sophie's help

to save Oktavian from the Marshall

A masked woman
wearing a striped Domino

throws herself in the arms of Oktavian.

The jealous Marshall dicovers the two
and challenges Oktavien to a duel.

The masked woman throws herself
betwwen the two

and reveals her identity.

The lady Marshall enters the pavillion.

The Marshall realizes his mistake
and lets Oktavian off.

Oktavian can finally embrace
his beloved Sophie.

With mixed feelings

Annina watches the concilliation

which she managed to mediate
at the last moment.

Valzacchi approaches Annina

and offers her his hand.

In the moonlight

three happy couples

take three paths:

Annina and Valzacchi,

Sophie and Oktavian,

the lady Marshall and the Marshall.

Ochs returns to his estate,
without having accomplished anything.
