All language subtitles for 02 - Menus, search, and shortcuts

- [Instructor] Now that you have a really good idea

of how the Blender interface is laid out,

let's take a look at one of the more popular things

you're going to be doing, clicking on menus and tools.

At the top left here,

you'll see a bunch of different modes

that are available to you.

If I hover my mouse over to the left,

I can left click and drag this open

and switch my different modes

to see all the different tools available.

Not only do my tools on the left change,

but my sub menu up here changes as well.

I even have a smaller sub menu

to select either vertices, edges, or faces.

Let's go ahead and play with that really quick.

I'm going to zoom in.

Remember, you can either mouse wheel in

or hold down control and middle mouse in,

or just use your Zoom tool.

Let's go ahead and move a little bit closer.

Select vertices and I can left click and drag a box

to select multiple vertices

or maybe just left click on one.

I can hold down shift and left click

to select a bunch at once

or shift and left click to select one at a time

or control and left click to deselect those.

Now let's pretend I went to Faces right up here

and left click and dragged box.

Did I get everything?

Yeah, it looks like I did.

Sometimes though you may not and leave a face unselected.

If you want to ensure that you select everything,

I recommend you go to select all.

The shortcut is A.

All right, now that I have all my faces selected,

let's go to Face Shade Smooth.

Now, this is really cool

because Blender is trying to make it seem

as if it's a smooth object,

but of course, we only have so many vertices to work with,

so it kind of looks weird when you get to the edges.

Let's go ahead and undo that,

and there's a few different ways.

First, you can literally go to Undo,

or use my favorite Undo History,

which lists out all the different commands

that you've been doing.

Another way to do it is just go click on Face

and let's pretend that you didn't exactly know

what the command was, but it was Shade something.

When you left click on any one of the sub menus,

you can hit the space bar

and then just start typing something.

In my case, Shade

and I can see that there are two different options.

Shade smooth and shade flat.

Let's go to Shade Flat, and what if you clicked on Vertices?

Maybe you didn't know exactly where it was.

You clicked on Vertex space bar Shade.

You see it doesn't come up.

Well, that's because the Shade command existed under Face,

but if you didn't know exactly where that command existed,

another thing you could do is edit,

menu search and just type in Shade.

In your case, you can either type in smooth or flat,

and here it'll tell you,

okay, this menu exists in the 3D view port,

and you're looking for either mesh shading

or right there, shade flat.

Mesh shading flat faces.

So whether you know more or less what menu it's under

and you hit the space bar,

or if you have no idea where that command exists,

and you go to edit menu search,

either way, you're going to be able to find any tool

or any command that you need inside of Blender.

All with just a few handy clicks.

As you can see, Blender loves menus and it loves modes.

So whether you know more or less where that command exists,

and you can go right to it

or you have no idea where the command exists

and you just use the menu search,

Blender is here to help you.

Be sure to be familiar with these tools,

especially the menu search,

because as we progress on your Blender journey,

they're going to help you a ton.
