I love my air fryer,
I do everything in it.

Name it, I do it in the air fryer.

I've tested air fryers,
I was so impressed!

This is really, really good.

I have made a couple of muffins
in an air fryer.

It's much quicker than in an oven.

'And if you're thinking
of buying one,

'we'll road test them
to find the right one for you.'

It's a bit like a satisfying
interactive machine

that I want to play with.

it doesn't drive me to work!

I like to think I know a thing
or two about air fryers.

I mean after all, I cooked
a Christmas dinner in one of them.

But with so many on the market,
and if you've bought one

or been gifted one recently,
where do you start?

'This year,
the air fryer market in the UK

'is set to be worth
nearly £120 million,

'and one household in two
now has one.'

It's made my life so much easier
having an air fryer.

It is a topic of conversation
between me and my friends now,

which is a bit of
a sad state of affairs.

I talk to my air fryer,

I say, you know, "How long
do you want to be cooked for today?"

Ten minutes, your fish fingers
are cooked, happy days.

'The variety of makes and models may
seem overwhelming, but don't panic,

'if you're still
an air fryer newbie,

'we'll be answering your key
questions throughout the show,

'and we're starting with a biggie.

'Is size important?

'Well, The Gadget Show's Jon Bentley
has been finding out.'

It's amazing,
the diversity available.

I mean, this is a sort of
entry level one here.

It's relatively small in capacity.
If you want a quick snack here,

you can get a quicker result
using considerably less electricity.

It's great because it means

and release all the heat,

you can just press a button
and have a little nose inside.

I think the first thing people cook

in an air fryer are chips
or potatoes

because it's relatively safe.

You can't really mess it up
too much.

'Well, let's hope not,
as we're gonna use chips

'to road-test some current
air fryer models.

'And we've invited some air fryer
newbies from North London to help.

and his daughter Greta.

'He's a consultant,
and she's in Year 9 at school.

'Their preferred chip method
takes them an hour each time.'

You don't have an air fryer, do you?

Correct, correct.

You are almost in the minority
of households, almost. No way!

So many people have them.
OK.

But what if I told you that you
could get that elusive perfect chip

with a little bit less work
using an air fryer?

I would be slightly sceptical.

What's the secret
to getting a good chip?

Don't overfill your basket,
like 100%.

I think I get so many messages

of "they didn't turn crispy”
or "they weren't cooked enough”.

It's cos you're overfilling
the basket.

The chips shouldn't overlap?

Well, they can overlap.
Can they?

The great things about
the air fryers

is you can shake your basket.

So, you'll move them around.
Right.

But if you start filling your chips
to top...

They're not going to be shaking?
..the air won't circulate around,

and you can't shake them so much.

'Clare has plenty more tips
to share,

'but now, let's answer another
essential question for newbies

'when it comes to choosing
the best make and model.

'With air fryers,
there's a general rule -

'the more you pay, the more they do.

'What's more, a basic model
is often just as effective

'as the bells-and-whistles
varieties.'

I found that, often,
the cheaper product

doesn't necessarily
have to be any worse

than the top end of the market.

I don't think it matters
which one you get,

until you've gotten used
to using them.

And then maybe splash out on one
that's a bit more expensive.

'Air fryers cover
a wide price range,

'from just under £20,
all the way up to more than 600.

'That's for a colourful
Sage model sold by Harrods.

'But the advice from
consumer service Which?

'Is to spend around £60 if you're
looking for a basic but good model.'

I would say just get a small one,
it's not gonna go to waste.

And if you wanna upgrade to one

that's a bit bigger,
buy the bigger one.

Give the air fryer a good clean,
give it to a neighbour,

give it to a family member.

'As well as being easy on the wallet
when you first buy them,

'the other great thing
about air fryers,

'in the midst of an ongoing
cost-of-living crisis,

'is that they've proven
to be superstars when it comes

'to the household budget.

'While an electric cooker costs
around a £109 to run each year,

'the annual cost
of a basic model air fryer

'is barely more than £31.

'No wonder it's stealing
the spotlight on social media

'and winning hearts everywhere."

Are you kidding me?

There is something very wasteful
about an oven heating up

for ten or 15 minutes
before you put anything in it,

and then you're using a big space

to often heat up something
very small.

It's so much smaller
than a conventional fan oven

with three or four shelves,
uses less electric.

What's not to love?

And also,
you don't waste food so much

because you can pop just the amount
you need into the air fryer.

It is so good for people
on their own, for cost-cutting.

It's just an all-round great
convenient machine to have.

Don't add extra oil,

only add the oil if you are making

Frozen fries
already have the oil on them,

so you're putting double
the amount of oil in there,

and they're coming out soggy.

Now, I tried the chips without oil,
much oil and they came up lovely.

So the thinking behind it was,
"Can I use it to help me slim?"

'You absolutely can, Rustie.

'And so have many of you
out there on social media.'

Here we go,
with another simple recipe

that helped me lose 70 pounds
in seven months.

I lost 150 pounds
without restricting any food.

I'm taking you through five days

for ten dollars.

I don't even like yoghurt that much,
but I wanna make it.

'Even so, too many gizmos
wind up forgotten.'

I actually quite

I bought one of these bread makers.
Never used it.

It's still in the box
in the garage somewhere.

It seems that kitchens
across Britain

are bulging with gizmos
we never use.

But this air fryer,
I use it all the time.

And I did think, actually,
when I bought it,

is this going to be
a flash in the plan?

Is this going to be like,
you know, motorized tin openers,

they come they go.

But, no, the air fryer
is clearly here to stay.

And I've been amazed, actually,
how much I've used mine.

'We might see the air fryer
as a trendy newcomer,

'but it's been strutting
its stuff for quite a while.

'Believe it or not, this culinary
wizard made its debut 80 years ago

'thanks to the genius mind
of William Maxon.

'Back then,
it wasn't about gourmet meals.

'During World War Two,

'it was used to reheat frozen dishes
for servicemen.

'Maxon installed a fan in the oven
to circulate hot air.

'That meant it was able
to cook six plates of food

'at the same time, in just minutes.

'Right now,
the air fryer love is real.

'Food manufacturers are so convinced
that these kitchen champs are here

'for the long haul,
that they've started slapping

'air fryer cooking instructions
on their packaging.

'A sign of the times.'

So, you've got oven times
and air fryer time,

which is a great idea.

It shows how many people
are using the air fryer.

And for a lot of people, it's become
a replacement to a normal oven.

'So, back to our intrepid testers,

'now with an extra team member
on board.

'Will they declare the air fryer
the ultimate oven substitute?

'Sure, they were wowed
by its chip-making prowess,

"but what if it could conjure up
a wallet-friendly Friday night feast

'in record time?

'After all, that's what
the manufacturers promise

in a bit of a challenge.

of cooking in an air fryer. Yeah.

It's very easy to overcook things.

You are comparing it
to a normal oven.

So you're making some falafel
and you think,

"Oh, in, in the oven, it's,
that's normally like 25 minutes.”

The point of an air fryer is that
it's circulating the air so fast

and so hot,
to such a high temperature,

you just need half the time.

'And here's a little science lesson

'to help you avoid
burning your supper.

'An element in the fryer's lid
heats up the air,

'which is then pushed around
by a fan.

'This means that the cooking
compartment gets super-heated

'in double quick time.

'That's why
you can reduce your cooking time.

'So it's important to master your
air fryer's cooking instructions.

'After all, no-one wants to turn
their culinary masterpiece

'into a crispy critter.'

'So, this is what happens
when you get a new air fryer

'and you do not read
the directions.'

SHE LAUGHS

'All right, moment of truth.'

'Oh, not'

The only disastrous thing I would
say that's not really worked for me

in the air fryer is... mushrooms.

If you try to bake a mushroom
in an air fryer,

it just sort of shrivels up

and becomes very unsatisfying
on the eye,

and in my opinion,
the palate as well.

'Slice them thin and put them in.
Are you freaking joking?'

I was making some chapatis in there.

Really, they needed, what,
three minutes?

I put them in for 15 minutes.

Oh, God, it was like bits of
black burnt parchment paper.

Given the air fryers are cooking at
these supercharged temperatures,

it's easy to get it wrong.

Do you know, every cooking disaster
makes a recipe?

Because a lot of recipes
have come from disasters.

So, as a chef,
I never have disasters.

'Here's our kitchen cautionary tale.

'Overloading your air fryer
with food is a recipe for disaster.

'Trust us, folks, don't do it.'

Do not over stack your air fryers.

Don't think you can make a big,
fat chicken and a bag of fries,

and a bag of peas
and a bag of carrots

in the same basket of an air fryer.

It's not gonna happen.
You'll blow the air fryer up.

'It's reported that 12 million
households in the UK

'own an air fryer,

'and hopefully they've taken
on board the advice not to overfill.

'And that includes not
over-filling your kitchen either.'

The space that I have
on my countertops isn't huge.

Look at the package
I just received.

That's the size of my oven.

But don't get carried away
because, remember,

where are you going to put it?

Don't let it live in the garage.

I do regret getting one
that's quite as big, actually.

It's more of a kind of
showing off to the Joneses,

"Look I've got two drawers",
kind of thing.

'If you don't have room for a fryer
with two compartments

'and you're forced to choose
a smaller fryer, don't fret,

'there's always a gadget you can add

'that will help to boost
the cooking capacity.

'For instance, if you add a rack
to your air fryer basket,

'the cooking space is doubled.'

Just being really careful
what you stack on top of one another

and how you remove the food.

The stacking trays also help with
you not overfilling your basket.

You can use it to separate the food,

therefore it cooks much quicker,
and you get that crispier finish.

'And it's not all about the rack.

'There's a whole world
of accessories out there.

'From oil sprays
and meat thermometers,

'to a steel chipper.

'There's a product out there
to make your air fryer

'your best culinary friend.

'And air fryer makers are looking to
create one almighty mega machine,

'adding more functions
than a Swiss army knife.'

Now, manufacturers realise
we've got limited room

in the kitchen for all this stuff.

So, one of the games they play is
to try and cram in as many functions

as possible into an air fryer.

This instant is no less than
a 13-in-1.

You've got air fry,
roast, grill, bake, dehydrate,

slow cook, steam, saute,

and it's also a pressure cooker.

My air fryer, it grills, it fries,

it bakes, it dehydrates,
it does everything.

I thought I'd go for one that
had a bit more complexity to it.

So, it's got two compartments,
it's got windows on the front.

Because who doesn't love a peak
behind the curtain

and a bit of a nose, darlings?

There's so many functions
on the air fryer.

I've managed to use most of it,
except the dehydrator.

As somebody who likes to hydrate,

I wasn't a fan of the sound of
the dehydrate option.

But slice up an orange,
lob it in there,

and then you too can have
a fancy bar

who has dehydrated oranges
in all of the drinks.

That one even can do yogurt.

I haven't done yogurt either.

The only thing it doesn't do,
it doesn't drive me to work.

'Coming up, our trio of tester chefs
are on a mission.'

OK, I need to add the noodles in.

'No overfilling
the air fryer baskets,

'and definitely no turning
prawn noodles into a pig's ear.'

Ooh! OK.

'It's a culinary adventure.'

It's time for a taste.
Get in there.

you don't wreck your device

'after its first few outings.'

I sound like someone who knows,
don't I?

Yes, I did it.

'We have shown that when it comes
to chips..." Wow.

They're crispy on the outside

When I first got my air fryer,
all I cooked was chips,

or chicken nuggets.

And then I thought,
"There has to be more to it."

'But your new kitchen friend
can be used for much, much more

'than just beige delicacies.'

Once you get confident with it,
you start to get very adventurous,

you know,
maybe you'll start off with fries,

then you'll wanna do a gateau.

Only last night, I cooked
an aubergine in the air fryer.

Mwah, chef's kiss.
It was just perfection.

Because you've got two drawers,
we literally cook everything in it.

Then you'll go online and look
at recipes and you'll think,

"Wow, I never knew you could
do that in an air fryer.”

I saw somebody cooking
a chicken korma.

The rice and the chicken

with the sauce and everything,
and it turned out amazing.

I feel like you can put anything
in an air fryer.

Would you ever consider making
a stir fry? No.

Ooh, that's controversial, isn't it?
No, I don't think I would.

'Earlier on,
we set our air frying novices,

'dad John,
daughter Greta and friend Ellie,

'the challenge of cooking
chef Clare's stir fry

'in their trusty air fryers.'

For the main dish today, we are
going to be giving the families

some fresh noodles, prawns,
mixed peppers, onions,

and some baby corn.

It's gonna be delicious.

We're gonna be using
the same three air fryers

which we did
with our chip challenge,

and I can't wait to see the results.

How confident do we feel?

What's baffling here is, you
normally would cook them separately.

I'd usually cook something
like this in a wok,

you know, I like to be able to look
and see and taste as I go.

I know you can do that
by pulling out the drawer,

but it just feels like, well,
every time I pull out the drawer,

it's not going to be in the heat,
so the wok is slightly different.

But that's just...
Yeah, that's a mental thing.

That's old dogs, new tricks.

'Our chefs will have to mix
the veg, prawns

"and Clare's homemade
oriental sauce...'

I'm using my hands.
Yeah, I think I might do the same.

'..Before adding them
to their selected air fryers.

'Dad John has the Ninja 3.8 litres,

'Greta is using the Russell Hobbs
5.5 litres,

'and Ellie has the Tower Vortex
with a modest 2.2 litre capacity.

'The vegetables will be cooked
in the air fryer

'at 190 degrees for five minutes.

'The prawns are then added and
go back in for another five minutes.

"But they can't rest there.

'With a stir fry,
the clue is in the name,

'and it will need a good stir
to achieve the best results.' Ooh!

'And we have a top tip for them.'

One of my top tips would be,
don't use metal tongs or spoons

because that can really damage
the non-stick.

'Most air fryer baskets
are coated with a non-stick lining,

'much like your frying pan.

'So, to extend the life
of your new gadget,

'you must be careful
not to scratch that off.'

Always go for a wooden spatula
or wooden spoon

when you're stirring
in your air fryer.

OK, I need to add the noodles in.

'Yes, you heard that right it.'
No, don't spit. OK.

'It is possible to cook noodles
in an air fryer.

'Clare has provided the team with
fresh noodles and a drizzle of oil.'

Guys, mine looks so good.
That's beautiful.

There you go.
Mine's ready.

Yeah, you're ready to
dollop it up already, aren't you?

'After three more minutes,
the team is ready to plate up

My flat mate did this,
he put a risotto into the air fryer.

And the air fryer didn't work
for like two weeks,

and we thought it was broken.
It suddenly came back to life.

My housemate did tuna from the can,

and then she thought it was going to
crisp up and make it kind of...

No, it just didn't do much
cos it was in mushy brine.

It was just horrible.

'Let's see if our family
has managed to avoid

'any major disasters
with their dish.'

because we've

and we all figured it out
and made dishes.

I—I would say, as a parent, to
listen to them say that they would,

I mean, look at it, it's healthy
ingredients, like, easily done,

and they're enthusiastic to do it
in one contraption.

it's only fair to get you guys

to also have a little taste

Now I know everybody hates that bit,

but they are
quite easy to get clean.

And if you don't do it properly,

it's one of the reasons why
these gadgets take an early exit.

Like anybody who's scrubbed
a non-stick pan,

the moment that comes off,

you're going to regret that
for the life of the pan.

If you decide use a scouring pad
on it

and take off...

I sound like someone
who knows, don't I?

Yes, I did it.

You don't want any residue food
lying there

because, time after time,
that residue will get burnt on it,

it'll start to smoke
and it's harder to remove then.

I wanted to get a piece a little
piece that was a bit rough off,

and I scoured that,
and then I thought,

"Oh, what are you doing, woman?!"

Nothing actually sticks to that draw

if you use parchment paper
like I do.

So, I haven't got anything
sticky on the drawer.

So I just use hot, soapy water,
and it's brilliant.

Yeah, we've even got the silicone
things so we don't have to wash it.

I usually put a little bit
of foil underneath,

so you don't have to clean it
for, like, a whole two weeks.

You just take the foil out,
and there you go, done.

So actually, when it comes
to keeping these things clean,

it's incredibly simple.

Just make sure
your following the instructions.

Always read the instructions,
or get an air fryer book,

or a manual that can help you
along the way.

If you look after your air fryer,
clean it properly,

read the manufacturer's instructions
with regards to dish washing,

because not all can go
in the dishwasher.

It's not just savoury meals that
can be whipped up in an air fryer,

they're also a pretty dab hand
at the sweet stuff as well.

'And the sophisticated models
tend to have a baking option.'

I have made a couple of muffins
in an air fryer.

They do cook really well.

You don't have to
keep opening the oven door

to have a look to see
if they're ready.

You know, just put the numbers
into the computer,

and then take the basket out.

You can make small cakes in it

because there is a section
for baking,

and it's just another oven,
at the end of the day.

"Just 13 minutes in the air fryer

'and you'll have perfect cookies
every single time.'

'But sweets in the air fryer
isn't for everyone, it seems.'

I tried to make some biscuits
in them, and that...

they didn't work out very well.

They didn't come out crispy,
and the shape wasn't good.

In my limited cooking experience
over the years,

one thing I always try and get
right is my lemon meringue pie.

Can you do meringue in an air fryer?

Well, I haven't thought about that.

Ooh, when I get home,
that's what I'm going to do. Yes.

I mean, look at it, it's
healthy ingredients easily done.

We've tackled the easy bits,
we've made chips.

We've actually even gone a step
further and made a complete meal

with our prawn air fry with noodles.

But we thought, "That's not enough."”

We thought we'd knock it up a notch.

We actually are doing something
I never thought you could do

in an air fryer.

We're going
to make Victoria sponge cake.

'Our trio of cooks are ready
to test their baking skills.

'For this challenge, we've
hand-picked three new air fryers,

'all of which
have different capacities.

'From the 5.7 litre Instant,

'the mid-range Tower,
which has 8.5 litres,

'but the most expensive
of the three,

'the Ninja, has a whopping
10.4 litre capacity.

'And here's the icing on the cake,

'all three are multifunctional,
ready to dehydrate, roast,

'and bake up a storm.'

Yeah.

for a mere 20 minutes.

non-stick silicone moulds.'

You can get more
out of your air fryer

using certain accessories, such
as silicone moulds and paper liners.

'0K, so I got one
of these air fryer liners.'

"But, if you don't want to break the
bank on brand-new liners or moulds,

'any trusty oven-safe dish
would do the trick.'

You can even use ceramic trays
or Pyrex dishes

that fit in a normal,
conventional oven.

They keep it clean as well.

Certain foods, such as fish
and chicken, work perfectly

in your silicone liners,

as well as baking cakes, or muffins,
or even making Yorkshire puddings.

'And now back to our testers

'to see how their Victoria
sponge cakes are getting on.'

Cool, cool, cool.
It said, "Cool, cool". It's ready.

that we've had.

that is now outdated.

and it's also an advancement
of the oven.

I wish I had two! Yes, I do.

We've put these machines
through their paces.

And I think it's fair to say
that we've proven

that they're not a one trick pony.

They can be as simple or complicated
as you want them to be.

And if you've just recently
brought one into your home,

I also think it's fair to say
that you're going to be spending

quite a lot of time with it.

Because air fryers are here,
and they're here to stay.
