escaped

dollars worth of jewels.

Mrs. Spaulding was
discovered by her butler

wrapped in a blanket and
locked in the closet.

She is suffering from shock and
is under

the care of her physician.

The entire area has been
alerted.

- [Reporter] The Evans mortuary
at Dickens and Wilshire

was the scene early this morning

of a brutal murder and robbery.

Herbert Stone, caretaker of
the mortuary for 15 years,

was found by the morning
mortician

on the floor of the east
parlor, beaten to death.

Stone was on special
duty guarding the body

of Mrs. William Atwell, which
was lying in the parlor.

A knitted scarf with the
initials D.C.

was found beside the body.

Mrs. Atwell had requested
that she be buried

with several thousand
dollars worth of her jewelry.

(television clicks)

- D.C..
