lady in la grange, tennessee.

- Yep, she says, "dear

- I guess they saved
the best for last.

- My name is jule and my
family recently purchased

The historic woodlawn estate
in la grange, tennessee.

Woodlawn dates back to 1828
and acted as the headquarters

Of general william t.
Sherman during the civil war,

And at one point there was
over 30,000 troops camped all

Over our property.

Our property is
full of rich history

That is ripe for the picking

For treasure hunters
like yourselves.

Ps, we also have quail hunts,

So feel free to
bring your shotguns.

- Boom, sold, right there.

Don't matter what
happens, we win.

- I agree, two birds, one stone.

- I like that, it's cheesy.

[group chattering]

It's actually cheesy but true.

- Exactly as awful
as you'd think.

- I'm all over
that, jep, you in?

- Yep.

- You in, murr?

- I'm in, I want to
bring my new toy.

- A new toy?

- [jase] a new toy.
[group chattering]

- Something besides sheila?
- What is it?

So you have big sheila, a little
sheila, is it baby sheila?

- [jase] this is
a medium sheila.

What it's called-
- what is it, what is it?

- Just trust me, it's
gonna be amazing.

[jase laughs]

- Oh, intrigue, I'm curious.

- You coming with us?

- I can't, I have stuff
to do with the kiddos,

But I do have an idea
I've been thinking about,

And I wanted to
pitch to you guys.

- Uh-oh.

- So the kids have been doing
a time capsule at school.

- A time capsule?

I'm not familiar with that.

- You've never heard-
- what's a time capsule?

- You never heard
about a time capsule?

- No.

- Oh. [scoffs]

[jase scoffs]

- Bury stuff in the ground

And people find it
years later, and-

- [jessica] it's, like,
sealed, and, like, it's-

- Well, isn't that treasure?

- Yes, it is, it can be,
it's a form of treasure.

I thought it'd be a fun
project to do for us

Because y'all are always taking
things out of the ground,

But we can actually
pay it forward.

We can put something
in the ground

That has treasures that,
like, are about our family

And then hopefully in
50 years, 100 years,

200 years from now,
somebody's gonna dig it up

And it's gonna basically
tell our life story.

- [jep] I think
it's a great idea.

I'll be with you.

- Yeah, me and jessica
will make our time capsule

For somebody in the future
and it'll be a mega find.

- I think it's a great idea.

request for y'all

When y'all go to la grange,
tennessee, this is an order.

- Kill a bunch of
quail, clean them,

Put them in a cooler and bring
that plus some treasure back

With you when you come
back from la grange.

- Would you like a

Well, it's beautiful
country up here.

- I have never treasure
hunted in tennessee.

I've always wanted to,
it's very historic,

Got a lot of awesome stuff,

So I am really looking
forward to this.

- Well, I like it
'cause if we strike out

On the treasure hunt,
then you have the quail.

My parents taught me
that at an early age.

No matter what happens, try to
figure out a way to eat well.

- I live by that rule.

[jase laughs]
[murry laughs]

Look, they got a
bunch of camels.

- [jep] they got baby camels.

- I don't think those

- [murry] I don't know.

- [jase] they got
big eyes, don't they?

- [murry] yep.

- [jase] reach ahold
to them, murry.

- What's it feel like,
what'd it feel like?

- [murry] death.

[upbeat music]

- Honestly, I'm kind of scared.

I don't like animals if I
don't know what they are.

I like to identify and
then know if I should run

Or shoot or whatever.

[jase coos]

We're here to find the treasure.

- We got some hungry alpacas.

- What are you calling those?

- Alpacas.

- And I think they need you
to come in here and feed them.

- [jep] get in there, jase.

- You must be kidding.

- [jule] come on

- [jase] do they bite?

- No, they spit,

- Yeah, I'm still not a fan.

- [murry] I know one thing,

I don't know much about alpacas,

But I know you've got
a beautiful place here.

- [jule] oh.

- [murry] this is
just so amazing.

- The history of this
house is incredible.

There's relics buried all over.

- Yeah.
- Yeah.

- [jase] well, we're
gonna check it out-

- [jule] all over.

- Built in the 1820s,
taken over in the 1860s

By general sherman
and the union troops,

This place is just
loaded with history.

General sherman made
woodlawn his headquarters.

He even slept in this house.

30,000 troops were
stationed here on and off

For most of three years
during the civil war.

A lot of tents around
here, a lot of people,

Which means a lot of relics.

- So you're serious
about us staying?

- Just make yourselves at home.

better known as gpr.

- I hate to tell you this,
it looks like a lawnmower.

Look, when I was a
kid, we weren't allowed

To do a few things, shave.
- What, shave?

- Or have a lawnmower.

- Yeah.

- You know what my dad told me?

Complete waste of time.

- What kid shaves,
that seems weird.

- Yeah, but this baby
is gonna find us gold.

[jase laughs]
[jep laughs]

Of any sort.

You would think a guy like
jase would have some faith,

Wouldn't you, but
I know one day,

This thing's gonna be
a game changer for us.

Suck it up, boys.

It's maybe gonna take
me a little while

To learn what this
thing's telling me,

as cold as it is,

If electricity goes out, I'll
be sleeping with the alpacas.

Well, it's about 34 degrees
with a 30 mile an hour wind,

But it's me, I am here.

We're gonna have
to find treasure

So the adrenaline
will keep us warm.

I needed an incentive
and that's it.

- I'll give you some incentive.

I'm gonna find a lot
more stuff than you.

[jase laughs]

- It's on, challenge accepted.

Ladies and gentlemen, start
your engines, it's on.

- We'll start right here, huh?

- Fine with me.

I always like to start near
the house and move out.

- I'm with you.

This property is probably
a couple hundred acres,

And we ain't got but
two days to hunt it.

We've got to get a move on.

[metal detector beeps]

- I don't know what this is.

The robertson family has always
been driven by competition.

I got something big,
right off the bat.

I mean, look, I love to compete,

But ultimately, I love winning,
and that's what's fixing

To happen right
here, mark my words.

What in the world?

It's got writing on it.

[slow music]

Ooh, it's got a lot
of writing on it.

Jep!

I know what this
is, that's a hubcap.

I bet that's off a model t.

It's gotta be old, early 1900s.

- [jep] that's awesome, dude.

- The model t was a
treasure of its time.

I mean, they were
trailblazing here

- [jase] well, I ain't
even going that way.

- Yeah, you walked right past
it, I saw your foot tracks.

- [jase] no, I didn't,
but that's a good sign.

- [jep] uh-oh.

[jase babbles]

18, I see 18 on it,
is that like a v?

That's a v nickel I
think for that year.

- [jase] it is a v
nickel, I see the v.

- [jep] that's the best
looking lady liberty, baby.

I've never found one of
these, I don't think.

- [jase] I've never
seen a nickel,

If that's what it is,
in that good of shape.

- I haven't either.

Dude, we're, like,
five minutes in.

We were, like, six feet apart.

You found something decent,
I found something amazing.

- You know, you need
to stay right there,

'cause lightening ain't
gonna strike there again.

- Oh, okay, well, you
just watch, buddy.

I hear some thunder.

[bell rings]

- [jase] good find.

Got another bullet.

I think it's a coin, jep.
[bell rings]

Oh, it is a coin, 1919.

- Woodlawn is amazing and
we're finding stuff like crazy.

- This is a vintage
brass doorknob.

- Ooh, ooh, that's a unique one.

I think, I could be wrong,

I think this is some kind
of civil war era bullet.

I've never found one of these.

[slow bluesy music]

I need to study my bullets more.

Like, murry would
be all, "oh, yeah,

That's a slaps
mcgee right there."

I don't know, I know
this is different

And I've never found
one of these, so.

[bell rings]

Hey, jase, shot through
the heart, baby.

- [jase] what?

[slow music]

- Well, guys, everybody
that knows me knows

That I'm a gadget guy,
and look what we've got,

Gpr, ground penetrating radar.

Hey, I'm really excited to use
this gpr for the first time.

I mean, I'm pumped.

This lawnmower contraption
is shooting radar beams

Into the ground

And it's actually viewing
anomalies in the soil.

Man, that's the biggest
signal I've seen.

I may just have to dig it.

If there's a hole that's been
dug, it'll show on the screen.

It won't show the
exact shape of it,

But it'll show you how the
soil has been filled back in

Over whatever hole was dug.

Uh-oh, this is a bad sign,
I'm seeing some roots.

You see this root right here
from that tree over there?

So that's probably
what I was seeing.

You know, this one's
a bust, but hey,

If it was easy,
everybody would do it.

The key to this
thing is learning how

To interpret these lines
and know what they mean.

Hey, we're getting
something, uh-huh.

I mean, it's a learning
curve for sure,

But hey, rome wasn't
built in a day.

Oh, there it is.

Railroad spike, well.

At least I know that
that thing works.

There were about 30,000 troops
camped right in this field

And they had to dig fire pits
to stay warm and trash pits.

And I'm walking
down these cornrows

And I'm thinking about
all these young men

That was away from their homes,

That was living in tents out
here in the mud and the cold.

Something to burn to keep
warm was a high priority,

A lot of work doing that, so
they burned whatever was handy.

If we can find a trash
pit or a fire pit,

It'll be a treasure
trove of belt buckles,

Bullets, rings, they threw
everything in the fire.

May be the very ticket,
with 30,000 troops out here,

They had to leave something
out here in this field.

[country music]

- Here's to you, buddy.

- Hey, si.

- [si] hey, she made it.

- Oh, are you excited?

- Oh, yeah, I'm excited,
me and my buddy here.

- Did you, is that
all you brought?

- No, I got a whole box.

A time capsule is really
specific to each person,

And really, it's a
collection of treasures

That really represent
you and your family,

Your life that
you're going through,

Something that tells a
story about your life,

And I'm super excited
to see what si's brought

And to show him
everything I got, too.

Okay, so I have the
two time capsules here.

We're gonna each have one.

I mean, our hope is

That these treasures will be
found sometime in the future,

Hopefully 100 years from now,

And they're gonna uncover
and, like, see our stories.

The first treasure I'm gonna
put in is my family photo.

- You can't put
that junk in there.

- [jessica] yes, I can,
these are my memories.

- But you've got
2,000 pictures there.

- On, look how cute they are.

- Maybe one or two.

- [jessica] look it-

- Here's mine, dragon knife.
[slow orchestral music]

I love dragons, so it's
a pretty cool little deal

From vietnam.
- This is a treasure?

- Yes, that's a treasure.

Hey, look, jessica
got me fired up.

My book's gotta go in
there that I wrote.

I brought some good items
to put in my time capsule,

So that was something that
meant something in my lifetime.

Hey, military duck from
my time in the military.

That's quack force right there.

- That's cute, that's
cute, I get it.

All right, well, here's my
next one, family recipes.

[si laughs]

I think people will want our
recipes, some of these have-

- No, let's get to
the important stuff.

This is my childhood buddy.

[slow orchestral music]

He helped me get through puberty

- You did not have
this growing up.

I mean, this is not that old.

- Now, hey, here's
the best part,

Right here, one black panther.

They say they don't exist,

But I've seen them
three different times.

- I mean, where does he
come up with this stuff?

- [si] now, what else you got?

- My list of favorite movies.

- Oh, okay, "pride
and prejudice."

- Thank you.

- I've never heard
of, what else you got?

- I'll tell you what
I wanted to bring,

Was actually a
bag of jep's hair.

When we cut his hair off, I
kept a ziploc bag of his hair.

- Hey, cut a little
lock of my hair,

Put it in the bag,
use my dragon knife.

- Is this sharp, this knife?
- I don't know, I don't know.

Ouch.

Hey, look, the one that
finds my time capsule,

When they get to the package
that's got my beard in it,

They may just fall over
and die right there,

Right there on the
spot, I'm talking about.

This time capsule is that good.

- All right.

- If they find that
100 years from now,

They would have
perfected cloning,

And look, they can make me over

'cause there's dna in that hair.

[slow orchestral music]

- [jessica] can you imagine

If there's 100 of
you running around?

- Hey, wouldn't that be great?

They can have a whole
army of uncle si.

- Oh, oh, geez louise.

Okay, so now we're gonna start
filling our time capsules.

Hopefully, one day,
somebody's gonna find this

And it's gonna be a
treasure for them.

It was a treasure to me.

I don't necessarily know

If they're gonna treasure
all of si's items,

But I really feel like all
of them will be treasured.

And then I'll figure out a place

That we're gonna bury these
and we'll do it another day.

- [si] oh, that reminds me,

I have-
- [jessica] what?

- This has gotta go.

- I forgot I even had that,
I believe in black panthers.

- We definitely had some
luck around the house,

go and try out, like,

Where the troops were
camped 150 years ago.

I think there's gonna be a
lot of stuff in them fields.

- Hey, jase?

- [jase] yeah?

- I found a button,
it's like a flat button.

It's pretty cool.

I think I'll probably crush
you in the fields, too.

I don't know.
[slow rock music]

- Jep?

- [jep] yeah?
[metal detector beeps]

- Best signal yet.

- Dig it up.

- Oh, cool, so
they took a bullet

And they made a
poker chip out of it.

[bell rings]

What they do to make this
is they heat up a knife

And they make a, you
know, like, a poker chip.

When you're a soldier
in the middle of nowhere

At a campsite, there's
not a whole lot to do

In the forms of entertainment.

Look, I got a huge poker chip.
[bell rings]

It usually comes down
to a couple of things,

Whittling or gambling.

This poker chip covers all bets.

And here what the
perfect example of both,

Which makes this a
really unique find.

They had a game going, there
ain't no doubt about that.

- Ooh, ooh, look at this.
[bell rings]

That's the end of a bayonet
scabbard, man, this is awesome.

When they had their
bayonets, you know,

They'd take their bayonets
and put them on their rifles,

When they were fighting, then
they'd take the bayonet off

And they stored it in a sheath,

And this was the
end, where it's like,

This was, like, leather.

How cool is that, man?

This is awesome.

- [jase] jep!

- [jep] yeah?

- [jase] hey.
- What you got?

- I'm looking at an
indian head penny laying

On top of the ground.
[slow country music]

- Really?

- 1906.

[bell rings]

I mean, look, that's in
spectacular condition.

I mean, this is one of the
finest ones I've ever picked up.

[phone rings]

- [jep] oh, hey.

Murry's calling.

Hey.

- [murry] hey, I
got something big.

- [jep] really?

- Yes, this is huge.

- We'll be there in a minute.

- [jep] we're coming.

- [murry] hurry,
bring shovels, out.

- Look at him.

Looks like his
lawnmower quit. [laughs]

- Ain't got no gas in it.
[jase laughs]

- [jase] you realize
how many people driving

By the highway saying,
"that guy's trying

To cut that cornfield
with that lawnmower"?

- All right-
- all right, what do you got?

- Yeah, look, guys, we're
right over this pit.

You see the basin looking

Thing right there?
- Oh, yeah, I see that.

- It runs from about a foot down

To about two and a half, maybe
three feet to the bottom.

It's either a fire
pit or a trash pit.

I hope it's a fire pit.

- [jase] all right.

- [jep] is there
marshmallows in there?

- No marshmallows.

- [jep] s'mores making stuff?

Did they have s'mores
in those days?

- Still don't understand
the concept of a s'more.

I never got it.

[slow music]

- This signal, it could
be a fire pit, I guess,

It could be a trash pit.

We're not gonna know
unless we dig it up.

I mean, the gpr really
doesn't tell you anything

About what's in the ground.

It's just seeing the anomaly
that's created there, so.

We still gotta use a
shovel and detector

To narrow things down.

- [jase] and we're just
gonna start digging?

- We're gonna start digging.

You gotta trust
the science, guys.

You go where the science
tell you the treasure is-

- [jase] well,
you've been knowing

That science about four hours.

- [jep] I'm not really
hearing anything. [laughs]

- Hey, it starts at a foot and
a half, guys, keep digging.

- [jase] all right.

- I'm down a foot and a half.

[murry laughs]

- [murry] I need to
see your foot scale.

- [jase] yeah, I mean, I thought

I'd be hearing some
chatter or something.

- [murry] I hear
a lot of chatter,

But it's not coming
from the ground.

- [jase] it's about dark.

All right, look, if I
don't get anything now,

Well, now we're three feet.

There's nothing there.

[slow music]

- Well, I say it's a bust.

- I should have known when

That thing looked
like a lawnmower,

I was like,
[murry laughs]

I realize this is
cool, you know,

You're looking into dirt-

- Hey, you know how you learn?

- [jase] how?

- You fail and
then you try again.

- [jase] all right.

- I may be a gadget guy, but
gadgets takes time to master.

- [jep] oh, I'm tired,
I'm taking a bath.

- This thing will
find treasure one day,

Maybe not today, but it will.

- After the quail hunt,

We're gonna put all that
dirt back in that hole.

[murry laughs]

They're flying, murry.

- [murry] well,
I hope so, buddy.

- Well, they're sitting and
we're gonna make them fly.

How about some quail hunting?

Don't mind if I do.

- Hey, jep.

- Hey, you ready-

- Let's go, you got
your orange, buddy?

- You know-

- Yeah, you gotta have
something orange on you.

- [murry] well now, I don't
think I'm gonna go with y'all.

- [jase] huh?

- I've been doing some research.

- Murry, we're gonna
go quail hunting, and-

- No, I'm not going
quail hunting.

As treasure hunters,

We're always trying new
equipment and new things.

So far I've used
the gpr for one day

And it was a bust, I'll admit.

We've only got
one more day here,

So I'm gonna set
this thing aside

Because I have something
really special to go after.

But I think I might have
found where there was a fort.

- Look, murry, I woke
up thinking about quail,

Just, if you want
to go find a fort...

Do it, but right now, look, I
have got the fever for quail.

- Y'all go quail hunting,
I'm fine with that.

I'll just go find this fort.

- All right, find it, find it.

[group chattering]

- I'll call y'all if I need you.

- I will shoot a
quail in your honor.

- The highest point
around here is

Where I would put the fort,

And I'm going over here
to this highest peak.

I think there's a civil
war fort over there.

Well, I was up late last night,

Researching like I always
do, and I read a place

Where it mentions an earthwork
fort made out of dirt

On a high point around here.

Hey, now, this
looks interesting.

[slow music continues]

I don't think we're
far enough yet.

We're just now getting
to the higher ground.

We just need to go on
up the hill, I think.

[slow banjo music]

- Let's go around this thicket.

[slow music]

I mean, if I was a quail,
this is where I would be.

Quail are birds that tend
to hang out in thickets.

This is a good
looking thicket here.

You basically go
in and flush them.

Going in.

Healthy competitions
happen all the time,

But when we're quail hunting,
it is purely a team sport.

It's me and my brother
against the quail.

Go on, go on.
[gun fires]

Attaboy.

- [jep] that's what
I'm talking about.

- [jase] hey.

- [jep] first shot.

- [jase] you get it?

- [jep] one shot,
one kill, baby.

- I thought you got it, attaboy.

Hey, you can't get a meal
'til you kill the first one.

- That's right.

- You're welcome, buddy.

- The robertson family has
been living off the land

My entire life, that's just
the way we were raised.

If you wanted to eat well,
you become a good shot.

[gun fires]

You did the whole
process, you hunted,

You clean what you shot,
you cooked what you shot,

And then you ate it together.

So it was an honorable thing
to provide for your family.

- [jep] hey, I got one
right here, get ready.

- Yeah.

I've hunted birds most all
my life, not so much quail,

But me and jase have
been hunting together

As long as I can remember,

Since I was a small child,
and it never gets old.

Jase really knows
what he's doing.

[guns firing]

It's not easy hitting the quail.

[gun fires]

- Quail are really fast
and we are smoking them.

To bury the time capsules.

It has some good memories,

Nobody else is
gonna know about it,

Somebody's gonna wander up
on it and find our treasures.

We found a lot of stuff
when we first came here.

- It was an awesome bird
hunt with my brother,

But we've definitely got
more treasure to find

Before this day is over.

- We know there's stuff here.

- We're back out in the same
field we were in yesterday,

And it's time to see

Who's gonna get her
done, treasure wise.

Oh, cool.

And just fyi, it's gonna be me.

This is horse tack.

So this was on, like,

A kind of saddle, it's
a good little find.

It just lets you know that
there was definitely a camp

During the civil war.

Now that's what
I'm talking about.

- Somebody dug a hole here

And didn't put their
dirt back in it.

And who is not putting the
dirt back in their holes?

Jep, cover your holes up.

- [jep] what did you say?

- Well, looky here.

I went to put the dirt
back in jep's hole

And found a perfect
little musket ball.

[bell rings]

Rookie move.

It boggles the mind
how jep missed this,

And I don't know how or why,

But now it's become
clear why jep

Usually loses the competition.

If you're digging
up the treasure only

For your partners to find,
it's a surefire way to lose.

Appreciate it, brother.

- Hey, this is looking better.

I'm gaining ground, I'm
liking what I'm seeing.

This high ground commanded
this whole country.

When you were up here,
you had total control

Of everything within three
quarters of a mile of this hill.

[slow country music continues]

Hey, [laughs] look,
look, I think we're here.

Well, we were looking
for the high ground

And I think we found it.

I mean, look at this.

You see those two little humps?

If you'll just look at
those humps and dips,

You can see where
they would have put,

There's at least room
for three cannons here

To fire through that gap, so
when you pulled your gun back,

You still have some protection

From any rifle
fire coming below.

This is 100% a
civil war era fort.

[slow rock music]

To the average eye, this
may not look like much,

But to the trained eye,
it's a real treasure.

Early in the civil war,

Union and confederate forces
would build forts out of dirt.

Dirt is everywhere

And you can build a fort
out of dirt very quickly,

And it really will stand
a projectile better

Than mortar and brick,
and the very fact

That this one's still
standing is a testament

To that early engineering.

While the bullets and the
muskets will all rust away,

This fort will be
here to be treasured

For a long, long time.

[upbeat country music]

- Cool, I found a
pistol bullet, man.

[bell rings]

I ain't found one of
these in a long time.

- Jep, there's a mini ball.

I'm finding these mini
balls like gumdrops.

In that area, you just
start finding musket ball

After musket ball,
and guess what?

I'll dig them all day long.

- Round ball.

- Yeah, I knew, I
thought it was one.

it's heating up.

- You know, honestly,

I got over this jase competition
thing, like, 20 years ago.

To tell you the truth,

I'm just having fun finding
stuff with my brother.

This has been a fun day,

Shooting quail and
finding treasure.

That's about as good as it gets,
to be honest with you, hey.

Let's go find a fort.

- [jep] he's already found it.

- Let's go hang out at the fort.

Get to where you can see him.

This was the fort.

- I mean, leave it to
murry to find a fort out

In the middle of
nowhere from the 1800s,

Like, it's incredible.

- I mean, look, yesterday a
one, today, a 10 out of 10.

This is awesome.

- It's a piece of history

That's gonna be here
hopefully forever.

- Oh my goodness.
- Yeah.

What a moment, these
are relics of the earth

That I like to witness and
put back in my memory bank.

That trip was gonna be rough.
- Yeah.

Yeah, I was beginning to

I'd never seen one.

I think we could raise them.

- Yeah, we could.

- I just don't like
the volume of poop.

It's just a little
over the top, you know?

- Well, just think
