A really tall figure. Like,
taller than this ceiling.

They took him out back

and they hung him
over a telephone pole.

This dark mass
is very, very dangerous.

It can cause death.
I believe that.

I don't like this at all.

[Cindy] It wants
bad things to happen

because that's how
it gets stronger.

I keep hearing
"Murder. Murder. Murder."

I'm a psychic medium.

Somebody is conjuring up the spirits
in this house, I swear to God.

we've investigate.

I wanna talk about
the bloodbath.

And dig up secrets
that wanna stay hidden.

...decide whether

His goal would be

Before I even got here,

I had a feeling that there's something
deeply connected to the property.

So I brought some tobacco

because I wanna
leave an offering

and ask the spirit's
permission to work here

because there's something going
on definitely in the land.

So I need to find
a spot to do that.

Yeah.

It's about respect.

[Steve] I'm in
Modjeska Canyon, California.

A small mountain community

about an hour and a half
south of LA.

I got a desperate call
from a lady named Lisa.

Says she and her husband bought
their dream home a few years ago.

It was a total fixer-upper, but the
second they started doing work on it,

all hell broke loose.

She sounds terrified and I'm
really hoping we can help her out.

So, Lisa, I gotta tell you.
Driving up here?

This is absolutely beautiful.

Beautiful home,
beautiful property,

but you sounded
miserable on the phone.

Um, can you explain why?
[chuckles nervously]

We've sunk
our heart and our soul,

every bit of savings we had
into renovating a gorgeous house

and hopefully somewhere
we could live forever.

But shortly after we moved in,
everything started.

And it has turned into
splitting our family apart

and kind of terrorizing us.

Okay, Lisa, let's start with basics.
Who lives in the house?

This is a picture.

This is my husband Kevin.
- [Steve] Okay.

[Lisa] Our son Steele.

Now things are so bad here,

Steele won't live in the house.

So we actually have him living in a
separate place on the property here.

So, Lisa, do me a favor

and give me a list of what
you guys are experiencing.

When we're here, we all feel a
heavy presence. - [Steve] Okay.

[Lisa] We see shadow figures.
It's become physical.

And now, unfortunately,
it's affecting our health.

What's going on with the health?
What's the problem?

Well, when we moved here,
maybe within six months' time,

Kevin, my husband,
was diagnosed with cancer.

What kind of cancer did
your husband come down with?

Kidney cancer.
- [groans] All right.

Um, how's he doing now?

[Lisa] He's recovered.

[Steve] So, Lisa,
you mentioned on the phone

that when you guys
started doing renovations,

that's when things went haywire.

What was it like here?

When we first came to the
property, this was a wooden shack.

I mean, did you take pictures?

We did. Let me show you.

My husband did almost all
of the work by hand.

[Steve] So do you think this
is what stirred everything up?

I definitely think that it
had something to do with it.

Okay.

[Lisa] There's a lot going on
in this house.

The land is a big
piece of this. It's huge.

It's a big deal.
It's a big deal.

I wouldn't be renovating
anything here,

I wouldn't be building
anything on here,

I wouldn't be digging
into anything

until they get
to the bottom of it.

What would they be
looking at if they were to...

It just stirs the pot.
It's stirs things up. It makes it worse.

Yeah, I don't like it.
It's not good.

[door creaking]

In the house,
I start to feel physical problems

like maybe dizzy, disoriented.

The woman that lives here?

Okay. Mmm-hmm.
- [Cindy] The woman of the house?

She has to be really careful.

I just feel like there's a
jealousy, there's a rage,

there's a...
from the spirit world onto her.

[Steve] Okay. So, Lisa, what's going
on that you brought me in the kitchen?

I get these awful thoughts
that enter my mind.

Okay, give me an example.
What are we talking about?

It's picking out a sweater
to wear and thinking,

"Oh, what should I wear today,"

and something's saying,
"Pick what you're gonna wear,

'cause today
you're gonna die."

Really?
- Yeah.

It makes you kind of feel like
you're a little bit crazy.

All right.
So, is there anything else?

Sometimes it just feels like

there's a heavy, dark blanket
over everything.

So we're talking about
emotions, not physical?

Guess it's a little bit of both.

Physical part,
what's it feel like to you?

Feels almost like something's
sitting on your chest.

It's almost like everything is
slower and heavier and harder to do.

[Steve] How about the mood?

Everything just feels dark.

Okay.

[Cindy] Something is so off
about this room.

It feels... so off.

And then there's something else.

It feels like a black mass.

It feels connected to the land.

It feels oppressive.

It feels like people will wake
up in the middle of the night,

and they feel like something
is on their chest.

They might feel something sitting
down next to them on the bed.

Or feel, like you know,
a presence.

You know when a spirit sits on the
bed and it makes an indentation?

- Okay. - So I feel like
people have seen that.

They're laying there and like,
"What's happening?"

I'm seeing an indentation,
there's a spirit sitting on the bed with me.

[Steve] Okay, Lisa,
so this is your bedroom.

Okay, so what's going on?

This is the room
where we get touched.

It's usually our legs
or our feet.

[Steve] How often
is that happening?

It's a couple times a week.

And what else is going on?

It's hard to explain,
but it seems to be that there is a woman.

It's like I feel her, and we hear her.
We never see her.

What makes you think it's a
female if you can't see her?

Because we hear a female voice.

All right, so can you make out
what she's saying?

So...

Most of the time, I can't.

But there are occasions where
I can make out some of it.

So I have kept this notepad by my
bed and write down, scribble words

that I feel like
I have heard from her.

Okay.

This one just says
"Can't live like this."

This one, "Remember me."

Okay. We're here,
we're gonna do this investigation.

What are you hoping
you can get out of it?

Hope we get our lives back.

Hope we get the house back
that we wanted.

It doesn't feel
like it's our house.

Hopefully, we can change that.

I hope so.

I'm seeing a woman
and she's active in the house.

She's very fast.

But it's strange because I see
her, like, shifting.

It feels like a shapeshifter.

Sometimes people will see a
woman, she might come as a mist.

The woman spirit
is super active in this area.

Does she get physical at all?

I feel like people might feel
touched by her.

Might feel
a little bit of a push.

Especially breathing or something
breathing like in the ear.

She's just very aggressive,
in the sense, energetically.

She doesn't have boundaries.

People can feel
something behind them.

She'll make people really
uncomfortable, give them anxiety.

Can't breathe in here.
Oh, my God. Wow.

This dead woman hates
living people in her space.

She doesn't want me here,
she doesn't want other people here.

And she's angry.

That's how it feels.

Yeah.

- Hey, what's up, Steve?

You got a minute to talk or are you busy?
- Sure. No, I'm not busy.

I was speaking
to your wife earlier.

She's convinced the paranormal's
out of control in the house.

I mean, do you agree with that?

I agree with it to a point.

I'm still a little bit
of a skeptic,

but I try to talk myself out of the
things that I'm seeing in there.

And how's that
working out for you?

It's not.
- Okay.

What about experiences?
Have you had any?

Um, yes. I have
been in bed

and I have felt something move my
leg about six inches out of the way.

You were in bed with your
wife at this time? - Yes.

Is it possible she touched you?
Did you ask her?

Oh, I asked her and she said
she didn't touch me at all.

Okay. Anything else?

Yeah. My wife and I
will just be laying in bed,

and the whole, entire bed will
shake for about ten seconds

and it'll stop.

All right, so we're
in earthquake country.

Is it possible
that could have been it?

No, I've gone online and
checked the TV and everything,

and there's no earthquakes.

Okay, so, you had
that happen in the bed.

Anything else?

Yeah, I have been seeing an apparition
outside my living room window.

[Steve] Okay. Can you
describe it to me?

Yeah, it's all black,
and it shows from its chest to its head,

and it's wearing a cowboy hat.

What kind of a sense
are you getting?

Do you think it's curious?
Is it just staring at you?

I think it thinks that
this property is his, maybe.

And he's just always walking around
it to say, "Hey, this is mine."

Okay.

So, another thing
you can't explain.

Yes. So, we just need
to get to the bottom of it.

Okay.

[Cindy] I see this man
walking up this pathway.

He works on the land.

He looks almost like a farmer.

Or somebody that would have
worked with his hands.

He's very connected
to this property.

Does he have any interaction
with the living?

I feel like he can be
aggressive towards people

who he doesn't feel
are respecting the land.

You know, people might
see him walking by

or see something out of the
corner of their eye from inside.

And that's him.

Yeah.

So I feel like they feel like
something's coming behind them.

Like they're being rushed.

If I'm walking this way,
I would feel somebody behind me

kind of nudging me
or pushing me.

[Matthew] Okay.
- Yeah.

[Steve] So, Steele,
I understand you used to sleep here?

Yeah.

And you won't
sleep here anymore?

No. No, I hate sleeping here.

The activity's
pretty bad I imagine,

if you're not gonna
sleep here anymore.

Yeah. Every time I slept in here
is why I would get nightmares.

What kind of nightmares?

Every single time
I have the nightmares,

it's someone trying to get in
here and trying to attack me.

Can you see
who's trying to attack you?

A really tall figure.

I'm talking like taller than this ceiling.
Like seven and a half feet.

The same shadow figure that I see in my
dreams, I see when I'm awake as well.

Okay. Does it look
exactly the same?

Exactly the same,
and it was looking right at me.

All right. Now you're sure
you still weren't dreaming it?

No. No.

[Steve] You were definitely awake?
- Definitely awake.

Are you taking anything that may give
you weird dreams or anything like that?

No.

All right. So, you're having nightmares.
Anything else?

Whenever I'm in this house,
I feel incredibly drained.

Like something is pulling on me.

You feel like you're just tired

or you feel depressed or
anxiety or anything like that?

Anxiety and just being like
I don't want to do anything.

I just feel stuck.

What do you think is causing it?

I think that there's something
here that doesn't want us here.

This place is very old,
the land is very old. - [Steve] Right.

I think it's just someone
who's so attached to the land

and doesn't know how to move on.

And wants it back.
- It wants it back. Yeah.

Okay.

When I come in here, I immediately
feel depression, anxiety, confusion.

It's being caused
by this dark energy.

I feel like there's
a young man in here.

A living person? Okay.
- A living person.

It's night terrors,
things like that can happen, you know?

The depression, it concerns me.

It feeds off of chaos and it
feeds off of other people's pain.

It's trying to create discord,

rifts in families,
miscommunications,

like all those things
because it feeds off of that.

That's how it gets energy.

[Steve] So one of the first things
I do when I start an investigation

is figure out who the original
owner of the property was.

In this case, I got a surprise.

Turns out Lisa's house
was part of a ranch

owned by a famous
Polish actress.

When I called
the local historian,

she told me the woman had a tragic
life I definitely need to know about.

So, Hadley, thanks for
helping me out with this case.

So this famous actress,
who was she?

Her name was Helena Modjeska

and she was born
in Kraków, Poland.

She was discovered
by an older actor named Gustav

who first became her guardian
and then became her husband.

Okay, so this canyon
was named after her.

That's right.

All right, so this guy was her
guardian, now he's her husband.

Right, did they
start a family at all?

They did. They have
a son named Ralph,

and then they have
a daughter named Marylka.

But she sadly dies
when she's two in 1865.

She must have
taken that hard, right?

I mean, it's her only daughter.

It did.
It devastated her.

And she also said that once
her daughter passed away,

her husband ran off
and she never saw him again.

Really?
- [Hadley] Mmm-hmm.

Okay, so now she's alone.
She's a single mom.

And this is the 1800s.

Does she ever get remarried?

She does, yeah.

Three years later,
she marries the love of her life,

this guy named Count Bozenta,

and they become a really
fashionable couple in Poland.

So at what point
do they come to America?

They come to America in 1876

because the Count
had these fantastic dreams

of living this Wild West
fantasy in California.

All right.
So now they're in America.

When did they wind up
buying my client's property?

So she becomes
an American citizen,

and then they buy
this property in 1888

in this area that was
then known as Santiago Canyon.

[Steve] So this is here?
In this area? - [Hadley] Mmm-hmm.

Well, it sounds like she had a good life
here in America. Am I missing something?

No, she had
a really happy life here,

but, you know, you never
get over losing a toddler

and I'm sure she missed home.

But the problem was, in 1893,

five years after
she buys Modjeska Canyon,

she is permanently banished from Poland for
speaking out against the Russians there.

[Steve] That had to kill her.

Okay, so what happened?

She has a stroke in 1897.
- Okay.

And then they lose
all their money,

so she has to sell
the property in 1906.

Then she's diagnosed
with Bright's disease,

which is a form
of kidney disease.

- Oh. - And she dies in 1909
at the age of 68.

So for the most part, even though she
lost a child, which is devastating,

looks like she had
a good life here.

Absolutely, but I think there was a murder
on the property while she owned it.

So you might wanna
check that out.

Really?
- [Hadley] Mmm-hmm.

Okay.

[Cindy] I'm seeing
that dead lady again.

She's really angry
that she's dead.

This is her house.

It's like people don't
get to be happy in her house.

But I feel that she
lost something by being here.

It came out that she
left her family to be here.

She wasn't meant to stay here,

and she's angry
and feels lonely.

She wants to be
with her daughter.

And the name Mary
just came to me, too.

She doesn't want other people to
be happy until she can be happy.

I don't like it.
It's not good.

[Steve] Hadley mentioned there was
a murder right on Lisa's property.

So I reached out to a retired LAPD
sergeant I've worked with before,

and asked her
to look into it for me.

She did some digging and said it
was a completely senseless homicide.

The whole thing
was over $2.50.

This I gotta hear about.

Cheryl, thanks for helping me out again.
It's good to see you.

No worries.

All right. So this murder,
what do we know about the victim?

Captain William McKelvey

was a foreman at the
Modjeska Ranch in the 1890s.

Described as
a peaceful, quiet guy.

Very popular.

And here's a drawing of him.

All right. So, from
what you're saying,

this sounds like
a really nice guy.

So how the hell did he wind up
being a murder victim?

Back in the 1890s,
there was a poll tax

that every male resident of
Orange County was required to pay.

So in July of 1892,
one of the workers on the ranch,

a man by the name of Francisco
Torres, refused to pay the poll tax.

All right, so how much
was this tax?

It was $2.50.

Okay.

So, the murder.
What happened?

Okay, so it's July 30, 1892.

Payday on the ranch.
- Okay.

Torres looks at his wages,
he realizes he's short.

Normally he would get
$9 for a week's pay.

He gets 6.50.

He's livid.

He immediately confronts
McKelvey, and he's like,

"Hey, where's my $2.50?

I want all of my money."
- Right.

McKelvey just, kind of,
brushes him off,

and he turns to go feed
the chickens on the ranch.

Torres is not having
any of that.

He follows him.
He follows him.

And he picks up a pickaxe.

He hits him in the head with a pickaxe
'cause he's still hot about that money.

Right.
- Then he gets a knife.

He stabs him in the heart.

Okay.
- He grabs his coin purse,

and then he takes off.

Okay.
- And here's the article.

All right. So now we got this
Torres on the run. What happens?

On August 9th, a constable
in San Diego County

locates Torres and arrests him.

Does he go to trial?

Well, not exactly.

Remember, I told you,
McKelvey was very well liked.

And so all of his friends and
supporters showed up to the jail.

They stormed the jail,
they locked up the watchman.

They grabbed Francisco Torres,
and they took him out back,

and they hung him
over a telephone pole.

This was the very first time
in Orange County

that there was
an extra-judicial lynching.

And it made news as well.

[Steve] Okay.
Is this Torres here?

[Cheryl] Yeah.

Now you got two dead men
over $2.50.

So senseless.
- Yeah.

[Cindy] This black mass
is the biggest threat here.

It's been here,
and it creates things.

It wants bad things to happen

because that's how
it gets stronger.

[door creaking]

I feel like the energy
that's affecting people here,

it's almost like this force can
make somebody's personality change

to the point where they can
almost become somebody different.

Or they can lose time,

feeling like two different
people sometimes.

Like, that's another thing
I'm sensing.

So, it feeds off of
people's fear,

it feeds off of
people's anxiety,

it feeds off of
when people get sick

or get physically ill.

It's almost like that's what's
causing a lot of problems

for people that come here, people
that live here, people that visit here

to the point where
people could die.

And it continues to grow.

a family being torn apart

by paranormal activity
in their dream home

on a property where a
brutal murder took place.

But I need to see
if there's anything else.

Searching through old records,

I find a brutal
Native American massacre

that took place close
to my client's property.

I reached out to a local author
who knows all about this tragedy.

He tells me it wasn't
about land, but horses.

Well, Christian, thanks for
helping me out and meeting with me.

So, you mentioned the tribe
here was called the Tongva.

So, am I safe to assume that they'd
gotten into a beef with settlers?

Yes. There was a group back
then of American settlers

led by a guy named
William Wolfskill.

That's Wolfskill himself.

[Steve] Now, Christian,
you mentioned on the phone

that this massacre
was over horses,

and I'm assuming that's why we're
standing by the stables here.

Exactly.

The Tongva, allegedly,
were fond of, of horse meat.

So they would steal
the Mexicans' horses.

Okay. - To get on the
good side of the Mexicans,

Wolfskill decided
that he was gonna

track down the horse thieves
and teach them a lesson.

Okay. So what happens next?

Wolfskill and his crew track
the horses to Black Star Canyon,

right near here,

where they discover the Tongva

feasting on the horses
around a campfire.

Even though they're
incredibly outnumbered,

they still proceed
with the ambush.

How did the ambush go?

They overwhelmed the Tongvas.

They tried fighting back, but
their, their weapons were primitive.

Bows and arrows,
Spanish blunderbuss muskets.

No match for the modern rifles
that they had coming at them.

And so the injured Tongva left,

leaving behind
the dead and the dying.

All right. So what wound up
happening with the Tongva?

Did they stay, did they fight?
What happened?

Tongva eventually leave.

Then, in 1878,

a company called the Black
Star Coal Mining Company

discovers coal deposits
in the area.

They open a mine
at the mouth of the canyon.

Hence the name
Black Star Canyon.

They mine there for years,
on and off, until the early 1900s.

At which point,
the whole operation shuts down.

All right. So, Christian,
I gotta assume,

even though the Tongva left,

there had to be still artefacts

and maybe remains
in those mountains.

[Christian] Many accounts of artefacts
being discovered over the years,

including a human skeleton
that was discovered in 1938.

Well, needless to say, I mean,
there's a lot of blood in these mountains.

Absolutely.
There's a lot of history here,

a lot of layers
that you can comb through.

And, uh, Black Star Canyon today

is a favorite place
for people to hike.

And many people, I'm sure,
have no idea what went on back there.

[Matthew] This black mass,

do you know if this thing
was ever alive?

Doesn't feel human to me.
Feels inhuman.

It feels connected to the land.

I'm gonna do
automatic writing in here.

Automatic writing
is a form of channeling.

When I do it, I don't
actually hear the dead,

but they write
their messages through me.

I put pen to paper
and allow my hand to move.

The energy from the land
is from a long time ago.

It's from below the ground.

Something happened in the 1950s

that really
amplified everything.

So the people that are building
or digging on this land,

they don't respect the land,
they don't understand the land.

There is a dig that happened,
and it broke...

It, like, opened something up.

Like, opened a portal.
It did something

that unleashed this mass.

I saw a lot of really dangerous
things in the course of this walk.

But the dead woman sneaking
up on the living person,

that has me really concerned.

I saw an image of a woman,
who is alive,

doing dishes,
staring out the window.

Okay. - Behind her,
I saw a dead, older woman.

She was about the same height as
the woman looking out of the window.

Her hair was silver,

and it was
about shoulder length.

Like, to here.

She felt really angry,
she felt aggressive.

Next, I had the artist
sketch a black mass

hovering over
a living person in bed.

I saw the woman waking up
in the middle of the night.

And the mass was so thick
that she is...

Almost like
it was taking her breath away.

More, like, a mist
or, like, a smoke?

It was dense, black energy.

Cindy, is this what you saw?

That's exactly what I saw.

[Steve] Now that Cindy and I have
completed our investigations,

we're ready to reveal
our findings to each other

and our clients
for the first time.

So, Cindy, I want you
to meet Lisa and Kevin.

They live here on this beautiful
property with their son, Steele,

who's 19.
That's him in the middle.

Now, these guys put a lot of blood,
sweat and tears into this place.

It was supposed to be their forever
home, but we're here.

So, you can imagine,
they're having

a hell of a time
with the paranormal.

Now, these guys
aren't asking for much.

They just wanna go back
to living a peaceful life.

And they don't know
whether they can do it here

or if it's gonna have to be
someplace else.

So, Cindy can start
telling us about her walk,

and maybe figure things out.

[Cindy] There's a dead woman
who is very active.

She's very aggressive,
she's angry.

And she feels like
this is her house.

She doesn't want
other people here.

She felt like something had
been taken from her in life.

That she had been forced
to be on the land.

She kept saying to me,
"I wanna find my daughter.

I can't find my daughter.

I wanna be connected
with my daughter."

I kept hearing the name Mary
over and over.

Mary, Mary, Mary.

You guys probably know this
history, but Cindy doesn't.

The original owner of the land

was a famous Shakespearean
actress named Helena Modjeska.

The whole area, Modjeska
Canyon, is named after her.

She originally came
from Kraków, Poland.

Her first husband was an older
actor who discovered her.

They had two kids.

A son named Ralph
and a daughter named Marylka.

So that's the Mary.
- [Cindy] Hmm.

Marylka tragically died
at the age of two.

This happened in Poland so we
have no access to the records.

We don't know
what the cause of death was.

We do know that after the baby
died, the husband skipped town.

Few years later,
she remarried a guy named Count Bozenta.

And they moved here to the US.

In 1888, they bought a huge
piece of land here in the canyon,

which includes your house.

Actually, I have a photo of
it, uh, with her in it.

Now, she never really got
over the loss of her daughter

or being away from Poland.

In 1893, she was banned
from ever returning to Poland

after speaking out
against the Russian leaders.

And her health
went downhill after that.

And she died in 1909
from Bright's disease,

a catch-all
for kidney disease back then.

She was only 68 years old.

Here's a photo of her from
when she was a young actress.

Could this possibly be
the woman you saw?

I'm 100% sure
it's her. 100%.

- [Steve] You guys have heard of her, right?
- [Lisa] Yes.

We finally toured her home

probably six months ago.

As I toured her home,
there are so many similarities

of the things
I have done in my house.

And it was just weird.
- Yeah.

This is her home, to her.

She... She doesn't want
other people in her home.

And she's making it
her home through you.

Now, is that the only way
she's interacting with them?

So, no.

I feel like people
might feel touched by her.

People can feel
something behind them.

She'll make people really
uncomfortable, give them anxiety.

Now, you were touched.

Tell her about that.

[Lisa] Yeah.

Some days,
it feels like fingers,

and some days,
it feels like a pressure.

Like something would sit on the
back side of me and, kind of, push.

[Steve] Tell Cindy how you
write down what she says to you.

She sits at the foot of the bed,

and then I tell my husband,

"I hear her, I hear her."

And...
And so my husband said,

"You have to get a notebook."
- [Steve] Yes.

So, this is it.

[Lisa] So, I wrote
things she says.

"I can't live like this.

Remember me."

I think you're very psychic,

and I think
you're also a medium.

And I think that
this woman has, uh,

a very strong influence on you.

Even more than I think
you are aware of.

I had a sketch done about
a scene that I saw with you

and the dead woman
in the house in the kitchen.

Oof. It's a little creepy.
- [Cindy] Mmm-hmm.

Oh, wow.

That would definitely be you.

I guess I feel so bad
that she's angry, you know.

I just feel like
we put our heart into this.

We brought back this place
that is so magical.

And to be angry at us

or, um, to want
to harm us is just...

It's heartbreaking.

I think one of
the biggest issues here

has to do with the land.

I got the feeling
that in the past,

this land just wasn't
respected by a lot of people.

I felt that in the 1950s there had
been some sort of construction there,

where people had
done some digging

without knowing what they were
doing, without respect.

Basically, it stirred up
a lot of energy.

I certainly wouldn't want to be
doing renovations on this land.

At all.

Well, it's a little late
for that.

[Lisa chuckles]

These guys did extensive,
extensive renovations.

That makes a lot of sense.

She was saying how the land
is pissed and disrespected.

So you should know there was a...
massacre of Native Americans took place

in this area back in the 1800s.

Well, it happened at a spot
called Black Star Canyon.

Yes. - [Steve] Which is
about seven miles from here.

Less than seven miles.

Now, you mentioned digging
and disrespecting the land.

In 1878, an American company
started mining coal

on what was once
sacred Tongva land.

[Kevin] Oh.
- Oh, that makes so much sense.

Because I kept seeing
digging, digging, digging.

And I felt like the ground
had been cracked open.

Something was cracked open.

This went on
for about four decades.

In 1938, the skeletal remains of a Tongva
tribe member was found in the mountains.

So, when you started talking
about their land being angry,

do you think that could
have anything to do with it?

Absolutely.

There's more.

So, really, I think the
biggest threat to your safety,

to your family

is this black mass
that's from the land.

This is not human spirit.
This is inhuman.

It's never been human.

But it's powerful.

When the coal mining happened,

and the ground
was broken like that,

it created a monster, really.

It can affect people
in a lot of different ways.

Depression, anxiety.

It can make people sick.

Heart attacks, cancer, illness.

About a year and a half ago,
um, my wife came to me.

She says, "Kevin, you don't look very good.
You look sick."

So, I went to the doctor.

And it turns out
I had a tumor in my kidney.

So I had a, uh,
part of my kidney removed.

And it was cancerous.

This mass, it can affect
people psychologically.

It can really make them insane.

And when I was
in the back house,

I sensed it was making a male
teenager feel very depressed.

Anxiety.

[Steve] That's where
Steele lives, their son.

I also saw that it was giving
this kid night terrors.

So, Lisa, if you can,

can you tell Cindy about Steele's nightmares?
'Cause he told me.

So, they all involve
a tall, shadow person,

uh, that he says is so tall

that when it stands
outside his room,

it actually has to bend over
to look in.

[Steve] Now, you said this thing can
also cause depression and anxiety.

Tell Cindy about the intrusive
thoughts that you get.

I will just be standing there,

picking out a sweater,
doing a dish.

But it's a thought that comes,
and it will just say,

"Oh, pick a good one.
You're gonna die today."

[Cindy] Yeah.

In the main bedroom,
I saw this mass interacting with the living.

I saw it putting pressure
on the bed.

Like, an indentation on the bed.

And I also saw it hovering over
people while they're sleeping.

[Kevin] Mmm.

And I had a sketch drawn of the
scene that I saw in the picture.

You guys wanna see this?

- [Kevin] No.

[Lisa chuckles nervously]

It's like something
out of a movie.

Oh, wow.

It looks like me.
- [Kevin] Yeah, that is you.

Have you seen that?
- [Lisa] Yes.

It just looks like
this dark, like, blanket.

Now, this sketch shows
Lisa in bed, I'm assuming.

But it seems like, Kevin,
you're having more experiences in the bed.

Do me a favor
and tell Cindy about

what you told me when your
leg was moving in bed.

I just laid down, and Lisa
and I were next to each other,

and I just felt just a little bit
of pressure, and it moved my leg.

I didn't feel any hands,
I didn't...

I just felt something
just move my leg.

[Cindy] Mmm-hmm.

You also mentioned
the bed shaking.

Just a little side by side.

Just enough for you to notice.
- [Cindy] Yeah.

It'll do it,
and then it'll stop.

Ten minutes later,
it'll do it again.

And we experience this
maybe once or twice a month.

This dark mass
is very, very dangerous.

It can cause death.
I believe that.

This right here
worries me more than anything.

I don't like this at all.

[Lisa sobs]

[Steve] Tonight, we found out
why you guys are getting touched,

why you guys
are always feeling watched,

and why you both got sick.

But what we haven't answered
is the big question.

Is there anything
you can do about it?

And if so, what's it gonna take?

For that answer, I'm gonna turn
it over to my partner, Cindy.

We both know that you've put
so much love into this house.

Yeah.

But this black mass,
it didn't start when you got here.

It's been here
for a really long time.

But any time
the ground is broken,

any time there are renovations,

it just gets stronger.

It's not human.

It's a force that
I don't know that...

That can be stopped.

I don't feel
it's safe for you to stay.

I think it's best if you leave.

Okay, I am just
gonna speak for me.

I just don't feel like we will.

I don't know.
I just have such a tie to this place.

Is that tie you or is it Helena?

[Lisa] I don't know.

How do I know?

So, if they do decide to stay,

is there anything they can do

to try to make it
at least a little safer?

Uh, the only thing
that I could suggest,

I do something
called spirit art.

Oh.

And I drew who I believe
to be a spirit guide,

who is connected to the land
and to you.

Oh, wow.

[Cindy] So, at the very least,
maybe you can hang him

and talk to him.

Okay.

This is a lot to take in.

[Steve] As far as moving,

would you say you're not
even gonna consider it

or is it something
you would consider?

I'd consider it.

I just don't even know
how to consider it.

Your family is in danger.

I don't want to get another
phone call with you...

Like the other day,
when you were all scared, screaming,

running out of the house.

Ultimately, it's your choice.

But think about it.

It's just a house. - Okay.
We're gonna think about it.

[Cindy] For the health
and safety of her family,

I really hope Lisa comes
around and decides to leave.

If she does,
I'm really confident

that this family
will find a new home

where everybody will be safe and
happy for many years to come.
