the drinks that shaped history.

Certainly
one of the most important

And kind of complicated drinks
to bring to market is coffee.

I'm one of those people.

Don't talk to me
till I have my coffee.

I see.

I wished I would have drank

Because Saturday night live,
530 at a

They break for dinner
on Saturday.

I was so tired
I was ready to go to bed.

Then I'm, like, exhausted.

And then have coffee
in the hallways.

They always find and drink it.

So what did you do?
Music would start.

It would get my adrenaline
going. I got here.

We always had. A one
time. Greatest celebrity.

But then one time
it didn't wake me up.

Now most fell asleep on air.

Take a nap. When

One of
the most complicated drinks

And one of the most important
to human culture is, of course.

Coffee.

Oh, I need a cup of coffee.

Do it.
Well, I'll need one right now.

You can have mine.

How about 40% of the world's
population drinks coffee

Every day? And in the usa, it's
much higher.

It's about 65%,
but apparently not jon lovitz.

Maybe today's show
will change that.

Maybe after today, jon lovitz
will be a normal american.

Not bad.

How do you like it? Well,
I like a little sugar, actually.

Too much sugar.

And I like the white sugar
that I prefer.

A little sheepish.

Same worse. Sugar. You can get.

That's what. I see.
And so you drink in the morning.

I drink a couple right away.

How about. In the.

The the day I can go to about
two or three if I have coffee

After that,
I do have trouble sleeping

When I have the espresso
in europe.

I can have it all day
and all night and still sleep.

Feels like
the coffee in the states has

Got word
vitamins in it or something.

The sip
that you're about to take.

Took.

Almost a year to develop
from the time the coffee fruit,

The berries are harvested
off the hill, processed, bagged,

Shipped and marketed
to join us here today and my bar

In this cup about a year
it takes you know what it needs

A year to taste that good
and to be accepted by consumers

Because consumers are very,
very fussy about coffee.

They want their coffee
to be perfect. Right?

I know I'm
not really fully human

Until
I've had coffee in the morning.

Coffee is really always done.
Two things.

It's kept

People alert and awake
and sort of stimulated the mind.

And the other thing it's always
done is bring people together,

Whether that's in coffee houses
or at conferences.

You know, you have a break
and everyone gets coffee.

It has this sort of
social purpose

That is very often associated

With driving innovation
and creating new ideas.

I didn't start in the coffee
business to make money.

I started in the coffee beans

Because I wanted
a good cup of coffee

And being the owner of a coffee
company

And coffee roaster
allowed me to control that.

I often look at myself
as somebody who curates coffee

For our customers.

I started working in coffee

In my early twenties
entirely by mistake.

I just needed a job.

But I started
to read about coffee.

I learned to drink coffee

And it turned out to be
this fascinating thing

That's interwoven into cultures
all around the world.

And what I thought
was just a simple hot

Drink turned out
to be completely fascinating.

Anybody in your family
drink coffee?

My parents didn't at all.

My grandmother.

I mean, this is how young I was
when I had coffee for school.

I'd wake up in the morning,
I was with seven or eight

And she'd have toast and coffee.

I started drinking coffee
that early.

That was
that wasn't my breakfast.

Then my dad did coffee.

Coffee, coffee,
cigarets cigarets cigaret.

And then at my dad's restaurant
when I started working for him,

They lost big coffee
urns, right?

Yeah. Hot water and a little
too big corporations.

And when I was like 11 years
old, I started working for him

And that was my job.

And he taught me how to make

The coffee with the big baskets,
how much water to put in.

It was very important to my dad
that the coffee was excellent.

At the fair oaks restaurant.

At the fair oaks restaurant.

They made that coffee
in those giant urns.

Now, in ancient yemen,

They boiled the whole beans
and pots in london.

Coffeehouses
ground it up and soaked it.

Nowadays
you can get it in pods and k

Cups and freeze dried packets.

There are drip

Coffee makers and moka pots
and even coffee and tea bags.

But today I'm going to make two
pots using two popular methods.

So I'm going to do the coffee,
the popular way to do it of

Support over
and then in the french press.

But before I pour the water in
either one of these and brew it

Up, I want you to smell this
original yemen coffee.

Mm. Coffee. That's very spicy.

Very nice.

Very nice. Very cinnamon. Lee.

Ooh, yeah.

That's lovely as well.

This might be right up your

It's got to be just an ego thing
at this point.

But he'll come around.

As I said, it takes about a year
for coffee to go

From the cherry on the tree
to the wake up juice in the pot.

And since I'm about to make
a couple of pots of coffee,

Now is a good time to talk about
how it gets there.

You harvest coffee
very carefully.

To be honest, it's
the defining moment in

Which will make a decision

On whether

Or not that cup will be good is
when it's picked off the tree.

Coffee and picked off
the tree is red.

It looks like a cherry
and it's pulpy, it's fleshy.

And what you see is the coffee
bean is actually the seed

Of the coffee fruit. In a way.

It's a lot like wine.

The more careful they are
when they pick the berry

Checking for ripeness
and things like that,

The better
the coffee in the cup.

That's why the best coffee
is picked by hand

By people who know
what they're looking for.

For many years
coffee was commodity,

Which means it was stripped
off the tree.

Effectively
you would take a hand, just

Write down the branch
and take everything

Because that led
to a lot of bad coffee.

But when coffee was only sold
as a commodity,

It didn't really matter.

It was all about volume
and weight, but as flavor

And the quality in the cup
became more important,

We started working our way

Through the details
of what makes a great cup.

So here we go again.

This is a yes,
this is a cinnamon one.

That's the french press.

And there
that's about enough water.

They're like this.

Just press it.

Well, you've got to wait
about 4 minutes for it

To kind of mix up there before
you put the pressure on it.

I mean, after all,
we have been waiting a year.

I know that 4 minutes

And numbers
are going to change your life.

My life may change in 4 minutes.

You never know.

But really, that doesn't
seem a much.

What you want
is for the water to filter.

Good coffee

Means you're going
to pick up your speed,

But you have to slow down
the wait for the grocery.

So while we wait for the coffee
magic to happen,

Let's talk
about what happens to the beans

When they're harvested.

This is where another
set of experts step in.

The coffee is roasted
and assessed and graded

And then auctioned off to agents
for the coffee brands.

You already know a lot
goes into that morning cup.

Coffee goes
from the farmer to the mill.

The mill then releases
nine kilos of that coffee

To come to the sample room.

And this what you see here
is mill's coffee.

And that mill coffee
comes in a sample room.

A marketing agent
presents it to auction.

A buyer will buy it at auction,
and then ultimately send that

To a customer who
either may roast it themselves

Or buy it from a roaster,
ends up in a cup.

Dealers at the auctions
are able to come and pick up

A sample of 250 grams.
But we can take away that.

We can roast sample cup

And then bid on at the auction
on the following Tuesday.

Okay, that one seems to be about
ready.

That is really light color
for coffee.

Yes. Well, as I say, you know,
there are better practitioners.

Maybe we should
get a professional in here.

Let me see.

Now. Don't like that.

It's almost like tea.

It tastes like cinnamon
to be honest.

Almost a little. You're right.

But wait, he's drinking it.

At least that's a start.

That the story of coffee
has everything.

Myths, legends, capitalism,
revolutions,

Scientific progress.

But it all starts with a goat.
That's right.

This is a story
that starts with a goat

And ends up with eventi latte
in the starbucks drive thru.

Now we've got a lot of ground to

Cover, so let's get all the way
back to the year 600.

So coffee comes from yemen,
ethiopia, parts

Part of the arab world.

And it was in
that part of the world

That supposedly
people noticed goats

Chewing on coffee
beans are becoming very frisky.

And they thought, oh,
there must be something to this.

Coffee is a drink with many,
many legends about its origin.

One you just heard goats
ate the berries, they got turned

On, and an ethiopian goatherd
named colby thought,

Hey, if it works for them,

I mean, it seems odd to us
today, but back then

I guess people took their cues
from goats,

So they chewed the berries.
And what do you know?

They got a little lift,
but the coffee berry has a seed.

The coffee bean.

And what do you do when
you eat something with a seed?

You spit the seeds out.

I'll let my friend jamaal
finish the story

Because he's a real coffee
expert from yemen

And he looks really terrific
in that dish. Dosh.

After they eat the food,
they throw the beans

And there's a fire.

So we realized this smell
coming out of his eyes.

So then the turn of the beans

And left ground
it and make coffee out of it.

Okay, so that's one legend.

Goats teach kali
to eat the berry and get a buzz.

Somebody smells the coffee

Beans roasting in the fire,
that unmistakable coffee aroma.

Some stuff happens,
more stuff happens,

And suddenly we're all carrying
around grounded cappuccinos.

But another legend says
that in 600

There was a muslim holy
man named ali

Bin omar,

Who was discovered
fooling around with the king's

Daughter and was banished
into the mountains of yemen,

Where he discovered a tree,
the coffee tree.

And he teaches himself

How to drink coffee
when years later

He goes on his pilgrimage
to mecca, the hajj.

He takes some beans with him

And makes coffee
for the people that he meets.

And they love it so much
that ali bin omar

Becomes a famous coffee
guy, the world's first barista.

He's forgiven for messing around
with the king's daughter

And made a patron
saint of coffee growers.

Coffee housekeepers
and especially coffee drinkers.

But these are just legend.

I mean, I'm

Not sure I believe that
in the year 600,

If you fool around
with the king's daughter,

All he does is banish you

The truth is,
we really don't know

If coffee came from yemen
or ethiopia or both,

Whether we got the idea
from goats or ali being omar.

But by 1100 people
all over the arab world

Were drinking it
to stay awake and alert.

And they called it karma,
which if you say it fast

Enough, sounds like coffee
and means in old arabic.

That too, which prevents sleep.

But there was a big debate early
on when coffee

Was becoming
popular in the arab world

Because islam says
you're not allowed

To drink alcohol to excess

And not allowed
to become intoxicated.

And so

The question was whether coffee,
which clearly had an effect on

Your mind,
it makes you more alert.

Does that count
as in toxic nation?

So the religious leaders
do this very odd thing.

They put coffee on trial,

They make arguments for
and against

Death, and a prominent imam

Makes a decision, sort
of like the forerunner

In a way, to what drugmakers
have to do to get

Something passed by our food
and drug administration.

But with cooler outfits.

A vat of coffee was
put in a courtroom and the judge

Had to rule under islamic law
whether coffee was intoxicating,

Whether you could be allowed
to drink it.

And the case

For the defense
was that if you drink coffee,

You can stay up all night
praying.

So surely that means that coffee
should be allowed.

And so
coffee was found not guilty.

And so you really get this

Drink and the institution
is meeting over the drink.

They really are bound together.

And when coffee goes to europe,

The idea of the coffee house
goes with it.

What?

Same coffee is the same thing
that makes it popular today.

Keeps you awake
when what you really want to do

Is hit the snooze button.

Look,
the world is a complicated place

With conflicting races
and religions and cultures

All bumping up
against each other.

And it sometimes seems like
we're all so different.

But there's one thing
every single human being shares

With every other human being,
it's hard to get out of bed.

And so coffee, that universal
solution to a universal problem

Made its way out of east africa
and the arabian peninsula,

Carried by pilgrims,
much like ali bin omar

On their way back
home, first to turkey,

Where they began roasting
and grinding the beans

And boiling coffee in a squat
little pot called annie's.

These nick, which they still use
today, by the way.

And from turkey to europe,
where it was first an exotic

And medicinal brew
from the exotic land of arabia.

Coffee was a drink for
the ordinary man in the streets,

In the coffee house
in the arab world.

But when it first came
into europe, it was imported

Actually by doctors
who were interested in its

Sort of restorative powers.

So initially it was just for the
customers of rich doctors.

And those kinds
of people get into a new fad.

They always claim
it has health properties.

Now it's all about breathwork

And juicing and organic
cbd lotion.

But back then

The hipsters and influencers
were all about coffee.

Kind of rings a bell, right?

All sorts of outrageous claims

Were made
about what it could do.

It could basically cure
everything.

When coffee
arrived in venice in 1615,

There were so many claims
about its magical powers

That it was time to put it on
trial again.

Now, this time
the part of the food and drug

Administration
was played by the pope.

And again, it was pretty
much like the modern fda,

Except with much better outfits.

The story goes that the pope
was asked to rule on

Whether it was okay
for christians to drink coffee

Because coffee was associated
with islam.

It was sometimes
called the wine of islam.

So somebody
gave him a cup of coffee

And it must have been
a very good cup of coffee

Because the pope said that
actually

He thought this was fine.

And and so that paved the way
for christians.

Drink coffee for italians
to become very good

At making coffee and for coffee
to spread throughout europe.

So we don't have an imam
or a pope,

But we do have the brilliant
comic actor, jon lovitz.

Let's see if he's

Changed his mind about coffee.

Not yet, I guess.

Okay.

Well,
maybe after the next big moment

In coffee history,
the important thing to remember

Is that before
the introduction of coffee,

Most of europe
drank beer in the morning

And beer during the day
and beer at night.

In other words, most of europe
was sloshed all day

And then coffee arrived
and did what it does best.

It woke everybody up.

The coffee has been called the
great sobre because for hundreds

Indeed thousands of years
people had been drinking

Alcoholic beverages,
that they were drinking

Alcohol
pretty much throughout the day.

Before coffee burning
drink beer in the morning.

Right.

So everybody in the world

Was just a little louder
than coffee comes in at beijing.

Everyone's sober.

That's exactly right.

It it revolutionized industry.

Remember when
I said that the story of coffee

Is somebody spits out a seed,
somebody else

Collects it, something happens,
something happens,

And then we get to starbucks.

Well, we are deep
and then something happens.

Park, England, london
specifically starts

Getting frisky, just like
those goats in ethiopia.

So you have an alternative thing

That you can drink as a result,

Instead of drinking
something that dulls your mind,

You can drink this
stimulating drink.

I don't think it's any surprise

That sort of europe
wakes up at that point.

It's the opposite of beer.

It's not stupefying.

It is stimulating.

We become obsessed with coffee
drinking today.

Of course, it's easy
to get a cup of coffee anywhere.

But when the first coffeehouse

Opened in london in 1650,
it was an immediate sensation.

People came to hang out,
talk, argue, work, engage in

Deep intellectual conversations,
just like coffee shops.

Today,

Of course, there were probably

Some annoying posers,

Just like today,
but it's hard to overstate

What a change this was.

When smart people gather

In a stimulating environment,

A lot of amazing
things can happen.

Coffeehouses were
where everything was done.

Discussions
on finance and religion

And politics, coffeehouses
where where decisions were made.

So people start new ideas.

But they could also meet
in coffeehouses

Where they can exchange
these new ideas.

So you get all of these

Intellectual revolutions
happening in coffeehouses.

They were this place to go

That was easy
and cheap to get into,

And it sort of provoked
a lot of discussion to the point

They were called
penny universities

Because you would pay a penny
to get in.

And the conversation
was so stimulating.

It was almost an education.

There are, you know,

The specialty coffee houses

For almost everything
that were science based ones.

The stories of,

You know, isaac newton,

Edmund halley

Dissecting a dolphin
in the grecian coffeehouse,

Because this was the kind of
thing that people got up to.

They were places of spectacle,
of discussion, of learning.

We know that the scientists
that the scientific revolution

Happened in the mid 1600s,
often meeting in coffeehouses.

The royal society in britain

Is founded after a meeting
in a coffee house.

Coffee wakes
you up in the morning,

But it also woke up
european culture.

It led to this this awakening
and all of these new ideas

In all sorts of fields.

And I don't think
that's surprising

Because most people
who drink coffee

Have had the experience of,
you know, their brain

Not feeling
like it's quite working.

And then you drink coffee

And then before you know it,
you sort of you've done

All the things
you meant to do that day.

That is the great thing
about coffee.

It was recognized very early on
that it had this power

And that was why
people embraced it.

You know how sometimes you have
just the right amount of coffee

To get you going
and sharpen your mind.

But sometimes you have way,
way too much coffee

And you get cranky and grouchy
and angry at the world.

Well, that happened to in
addition to things like science

And commerce, coffee drinking
also made people a little salty.

London people were doing english

Things like investing in world
trade companies

And inventing the insurance
market.

But across the channel in paris,
people were doing very french

Things like complaining
about the king

And getting philosophical
about the rights of men.

Coffeehouses in paris became
hotbeds of revolutionary talk.

It was where you went to plot
against the government.

Coffeehouses were full of spies
and agitators and false flag

Bearers and psyops experts.

You never knew

If the wild eyed revolutionary
giving a speech was for real

Or a decoy designed

By the king's secret police
to draw out the troublemakers.

And most of this anti royalist
revolutionary talk

Happened in one place
coffee shop, which claims

To be the oldest cafe in paris
in the 1700s.

If you were anybody,
you went to a cop.

Voltaire was there.

He was said to have drunk
40 cups of coffee a day.

But also benjamin franklin,
who was in paris representing

The brand new united states,
making trade deals.

And a lot of
that happened at cafe corp.

Now, eventually, of course,
there were just

Too many troublemakers
drinking too much coffee.

And before you knew it,
the french revolution

On their hands,
a revolution fueled by coffee.

The first great speech
of the french revolution.

Two arms, two arms.

That guy

Got up on a table
in a coffeehouse,

And then they attacked
the bastille.

Influential radicals and zealots
like maximilien robespierre

Took his coffee at the pro cup,

And he was one of the most

Powerful political figures
of the french revolution.

And in 1793,

He was also part of the group
that demanded

And got the head of louis
the 16th,

After which robespierre
became very undemocratic

And sort of unhinged,
unleashing a period

Of show trials, massacres
and public executions.

The french call
the terror la terror.

And while you can't blame coffee
for all of that,

I think we can all agree
that coffee wakes

You up and helps
you concentrate.

But it can also make
you really, really irritable.

You know how it is.

Sometimes you wake up ready

To dissect a dolphin
and sometimes you wake up

And all you want to do
is chop the king's head off.

Coffee drove revolutions,
but it also drove armies.

By the 1800s,

Coffee was a staple of military
campaigns, too.

Napoleon made sure his troops
had plenty of coffee,

And in america, it was a big
part of civil war rations.

I know coffee was very integral
in the civil war.

There were many soldiers
who actually refused to fight

Unless the government
gave them the ration of coffee

From which to drink every day.

And if they didn't get it,
we're not fighting.

We're done. So

Coffee culture.

Has not changed much.

People still meet for coffee
to discuss

Weighty matters and matters
that aren't so weighty.

Right?

Today

You're going to a starbucks.
And what do you see?

What do you see
the humans doing there?

What are they doing?
They're sitting. There.

They are.
They're under computer.

Set of being on the golf course
and they're

Getting away from their lives
killing time.

People are running businesses
and probably

Many criminal frauds
and on their computers.

Yes, hacking banks
and their staffs.

Banks from a are.

So important, so important
coffee is to our life.

Coffee runs business as it did
in the great coffeehouses

Of london and paris.

It runs discussion
about philosophy,

Religion, finance, politics.

Yeah, it runs through me.

How do you get work?

It's important
to remember two things.

One, that john lovett

Says a great career in comedy,
despite that joke.

And two,

That coffee is still what drives
every office in the world.

There's not an office

Or workplace
or break room in america

That doesn't have

A coffee machine,
and often two or three employees

Hanging around it, talking trash
about management,

Just like the french revolution,
minus the guillotine.

Of course, we hope.

You know,
I was a coffee salesman.

Oh. Well, that relates to
what we're doing now.

I was a quarry coffee salesman.

What's easier
to sell them? Well.

It was not easy, because every
office coffee is very important.

They have to have a coffee
maker.

And I

Was to go into these offices

And show them that

Their coffee maker
wasn't as good as quarry coffee.

And I'll show you the technique.

You want to see it? Yes.

I would walk into these places.
Okay.

I'm a skeptical bar. Owner, so.

Oh, I see you have a coffee
maker.

Well, thanks for coming in, but,
you know, we're happy

With our coffee service.

We come in once a week. Why?

We maintain the machine?

It's a coffee service.

We sell not just the coffee.

This is the residue.

Well, that's disgusting.

It's disgusting. Sure.

Yeah.

You want your employees
that you love?

Cheers to drink.

Disgusting, dirty,
toxic contaminants? No.

My coffee service will provide
clean,

Functional machine.

I sold three. To one and forget.

Coffee. Coffee's
not like any other drink.

It's really one of those rituals
we engage in every day,

Sometimes
without even thinking about it

And how we drink it and
how the people we love drink it.

Well,
that's a big part of life, jean.

This coffee is delicious.

Do you know that?

It's.

Look, it's good

That people are getting more

Interested
in how to make the best cup,

Especially when you remember
the planters and the pickers

And tasters

Who are trying to get you
the very best beans around.

So, sure, the last step,
the brewing is important,

But like everything else,
people can go too far.

The coffee's becoming
a little bit like wine

And that there's a little bit of
snobbery developing around it.

The coffee industry

Certainly borrowed
a lot of language from wine,

Which has a

Much more established vocabulary
and lexicon around tasting,

And we've stolen
a good amount of that.

We talk about mouthfeel
and aftertaste

And all of those things,
but at the same time,

People are just getting

Appreciating
the nuances of coffee

And the papers that come out of
not just where it's grown,

How it's processed,
but also how it's extracted.

What we have seen in the past
20 years or so.

It's more connoisseurship
around coffee.

People start to make
a distinction between

Whether a coffee is grown
in a single plantation or not

And preferring coffees

Of different styles
for different countries.

So I think people are starting
to pay more attention to it

And treat it
less like a commodity.

But I think
most people who drink coffee

Just think coffee is coffee.

Coffee, maybe coffee, but

People can be awfully particular
about how their cup is made.

What kind of you use.

Instant folgers tastes
good as fresh perked.

Now, in my opinion,
these people need to be reminded

That all of this originally
was something we learned

From goats.

It's kind of appropriate that,
you know, coffee

Has driven
innovation in lots of fields,

But there's also been innovation
in coffee itself.

And so every few years

It seems a new way of making
coffee comes along.

And I have to say,
I changed the way

I make coffee every few years.

But if you don't
want to fuss about it yourself,

There is a place you can go
and it's time now to talk

About the big green mermaid
in the room.

Starbucks created this.

They created the coffee shop.

They created the third place.

I wouldn't be here
without starbucks.

They created an area
that I could move into

And create a life for myself
and a business for myself.

And they were doing
a lot of cool things

With beans, stock
and supporting their staff.

And those are all positive
things and they've always

Been had a very good culture
for their staff,

Which I appreciate.

What I do like about starbucks
is that they are

A great recruiter.

They get people drinking coffee
and they get people

Making coffee out of home
a part of their daily lives.

And I think
if you go to a starbucks now,

I mean, they've got
rid of the small cups

Now, the smallest,
what you could get is tall,

Which used to be medium.

And they've added
this giant cup,

The venti 20 fluid ounce cup,
except it's mostly milk.

So that's another thing,

I think that starbucks
has changed,

That we're drinking these much,
much bigger coffees

With a lot of milk in them,
a lot of sugar from the

The sirups and other things
that have been added.

Starbucks has elevated what we
were willing to pay for coffee.

You know, historically,

Coffee was instant coffee
and therefore it was cheap.

And the idea that coffee
should cost

Anything at all

And you've got this amazing menu

With like thousands
of combinations.

My daughter once
had a quintuple ventilator.

She then did all of her work
for that day in about 2 hours,

Wrote a poem
which went on to win a prize

And then fell asleep
on the floor.

So draw your own conclusions.

Starbucks is everywhere,
on every street corner

And sometimes on the street
in between espressos, lattes,

Venti drips, coffee

That used to be thought
of as exotic and foreign.

Well,
they're now available all over.

You pull off the interstate

Pretty much anywhere in america,
and there's a starbucks.

Then, like any successful
business, it inspired

Competitors like peet's
and blue bottle of caribou.

When a regional new England
based donut chain called dunkin

Donuts started to expand
across the country in the 1990,

They noticed how much their
customers love their coffee,

Maybe even more than the donuts.

And they realized that coffee
was what business school

People call a unique
selling proposition.

In 2018, they made it official.

Dunkin donuts
is now just dunkin.

The coffee
is the star of the show,

But there are still

Some exotic coffees
that haven't become ubiquitous.

And a trigger warning.

This next part is
sort of disgusting.

So if you're eating, maybe

Put down the sandwich
for the next couple of minutes,

The most exotic and expensive
coffee in the world.

And one that intrigues
me is the coffee.

Luke. Coffee.

It is coffee that is consumed

In berry form
by the asian palm civet.

And that's
a little kind of jungle cat.

And so the shorthand for this
coffee is cat poo.

then they make coffee from that.

I have to confess,
I've never tried it,

And I'm not particularly
keen on trying it in the future.

However, the beans get to you.

How a coffee
is made really matters.

I just made two pots of coffee.

One was good
and one not so much.

But then I'm not an expert.

I'm an actor, not a barista.

Although in hollywood,
most baristas are also actors.

Making coffee well is difficult.

And that's intimidating to me
because they know everything

About coffee.
They do. I literally.

I don't know anything

there's a very fine line

and pain in the ass.

Lucky for us,

So there's so many great ways
to have coffee.

And right now
we're just going to do a simple.

How about three espressos?

So this isn't a latte. Latte?

What does it mean?

It's a double shot of espresso
with about 10 to 12 ounces

Of steamed milk.

1012 ounce bottles.

Way more milk than espresso.

You know, milk and espresso.

And that's whole milk.
Or you can have a skinny.

You can have a skinny.

You can also do an almond soy
pistachio.

You can walk in.

And if you have a professional

Barista like jade working,
you can just say cafe americano.

I mean, you can have it

Filter coffee,
you can have it poured over ice,

You can have it
frozen, cooled with nitrogen.

And there's
so many ways to have it.

So there's fine grind, medium
grinding, coarse grind.

What do you use for what.

Fine grind
would be for espresso?

You want the water
to run through at a slower pace.

Okay, so it takes.

More medium grind for like
a drip coffee or a percolator.

Okay.

And of course, grind for french
press or cold brew.

And so you can make it

In quite basic conditions
if you have to.

You grind up the beans,
you put them in some hot water

And hope for the best,

But you can sort of get by in
quite some simple conditions

With quite simple ingredients

Because ultimately
it's quite a simple drink.
