For years, my belief in UFOs
and other unexplained phenomena

has been met with skepticism
and disbelief.

to Catalina before?

DEMI: In recent years,
the Pacific Ocean

has been a UFO hotspot
for military encounters.

The Pentagon released a report.

There were a hundred
and forty-four UAP sightings

reported by military aviators.

MATTHEW: Right.

They were only able
to identify--

that one of them
could be debunked.

-What?

Some researchers believe

UFOs are centered around
Santa Catalina Island.

So I wanna take my best friend,

out there

so we can see if there's any
proof of extraterrestrial life.

MATTHEW: Let's go explore.

really good seafood here.

I bet you're right.

Do you think mermaids
could be ETs?

DEMI: Well, look, for sure,

there's gotta be some species
down there that,

that we don't know about,

that people may have mistaken
for mermaids.

and what is it that's here?

My name is Brittany Barbieri,
and I'm a certified ufologist,

as well as a cryptozoologist.

BRITTANY: I studied
under Donald Schmitt.

He is my main mentor.

And I've studied UFOs
and USOs for several years.

Well, USO is an unidentified
submergible object.

So it's basically a UFO
that can go underwater.

People in the boats,
family tourism,

they spot these objects
going in and out of water,

as well as levitating
out of the water

next to their vessels
and back down.

Catalina seems to be the hotbed,
the hotspot off of California

for USO activities.

going on in the island?

What have you guys been able to
like investigate so far?

Well, we actually--
we just got here, and so--yeah.

Well, I'm actually here
to ask you about Catalina

and why there has been
so much activity here

-on the island.
-BRITTANY: Yeah.

I mean, honestly,
Catalina is like

a huge mysterious island.

It's like UFO hotspot.

Nobody knows the real reason.

There's structures.
There's weird anomalies.

-MATTHEW: Yeah.
-What structures?

There's a couple structures.

There's one that's been
in question

for like a long time.

It looks kind of like
a little base

with an entry point.

And it's really cool
'cause there was another person

that did like the underwater
kind of viewpoint of it

and you can see
like these pillars.

Have you seen that?
I will show you.

-Oh, that's so exciting.

Here's the other
view of the structure.

MATTHEW: This is underwater?

BRITTANY:
This is underwater, yes.

So this is now viewing
from underneath.

So you can actually
make out the pillars.

-Do you see that?
-Oh, my God.

BRITTANY: It's off the coast
a little bit.

Like I've never known
any natural formation of rock

to have three-point pillars
holding up a front ledge.

If anybody would say,
"Is that a base?"

I'd be like, "Uh, yeah.

That pretty much
looks like one to me."

When you say base,
like literally

-what do you mean by that?
-Like an alien base.

So on Catalina, there's so many
different occurrences of,

of strange phenomenon,
just like the portal,

the green door on the island.

-Nobody--oh, my God.
-I need to know.

I'm sorry. What?

I know nothing
about a green door.

BRITTANY: Yeah.
They have the portal too,

which I think
is also extraterrestrial.

That's what I firmly believe.

MATTHEW: This is so much.

Everybody that lives here
knows of the green door.

If you ask them,
they're like, "Oh, yeah.

The green door. Yeah.
It's just a green door."

-It just appeared?
-Just appears,

all over the island,
whenever it wants.

They say it just appears.

DEMI: I believe that
there is a connection

between ETs
and possible portals and USOs.

So I wanna learn more

and I wanna see
what I can find out.

MATTHEW: I'm probably the,
the biggest skeptic

out of the three of us.

And this has been quite
a journey for me,

-learning all of this stuff.

Demi is a firm believer
in mermaids.

Are there mermaids
on Catalina Island?

Why wouldn't there be?

DEMI: I feel like
if humans were to confuse

something with ETs,
it would be mermaids.

Absolutely.

DEMI: Brittany's saying
mermaids might be real.

It makes me feel
like I told you so.

I believe that there could
possibly be mermaids,

which is actually
an alien species

that lives in parts of
the Indian Ocean,

which we have never explored
before as human beings.

And Columbus,
Christopher Columbus

had actually seen three mermaids
on his way to America.

I just think it's,
it's possible.

And there's this like
really extremely convincing

-documentary that came out.

DEMI: Maybe not mermaid
in a traditional sense,

but definitely creatures
that live underwater

and could be
from another planet.

But then it gets creepier.

This sound was captured
in our ocean,

and it cannot be replicated
by any government official,

BRITTANY: And it's incredible

because where
it was picked up on

was 3,000 miles away
from its actual location.

So imagine
if you were right up on it.

It leaves you going, "Okay,
what could this possibly be?"

They've titled it The Upsweep.

A lot of people came back
and they were like,

like a Russian submarine,"
and it wasn't.

every single piece--

and, for me, it almost sounds
like a facility break-in.

I think they finally captured
the door opening

to know the truth.

not have a full picture.

they're here to harm us.

If they were going to do it,

I served from 1986 until 2008.

I was one of the most
well-trained

and most senior
operation specialists

that ever wore the uniform.

to identify everything
that flew in the sky.

And I started to see
these strange objects

off Catalina right here.

You know, operation specialists
are trained skeptics.

That's why we have
so many toys.

I have 16 years
behind this radar.

I've never seen anything ever
fly like that before.

the USS Nimitz's encounter

which was top secret for years

until it was leaked
to the public in 2017.

I'm deeply honored.

I joined the Navy in 1986.

And I had 16 years of sea time
on these waters out here.

Operation specialist
sitting behind the SPY-1 radar,

radar operators in the Navy.

We are trained skeptics.

We don't believe anything
unless we have the facts.

We wanna make identifications.

It was my last underway
in November 2004.

We're out here
doing a major exercise.

And I was up on watch,
and I saw this

really strange group of
air contacts.

I'd never seen anything
like it before.

There was probably five of them,

and they were at 28,000 feet
going south at a hundred knots.

Captain comes down
to the [INDISTINCT].

I said, "Hey, sir, you know,
we've been watching

these contacts for some time now

and no one
in the strike group knows

what the hell these things are.

And I strongly recommend that
we intercept one of these

and figure it out
because I'm concerned

about safety of flight."

And he looks at me real sternly,
"You're right. Intercept it."

Visually ID it.

A fast Eagle flight
launches off the carrier.

[WHIRRING]

KEVIN: We vector him up
to the closest contact to us.

And he gets all the way
to the merge plot position,

which is two objects
in the same vertical
piece of sky.

As soon as he gets
to that point,

we hear on the radio,
I had that piped in
through the speaker,

"Oh, my God. Oh, my God.
I'm engaged. I'm engaged."

MATTHEW: Literally,
what did it look like?

KEVIN: At the time,
I was on the ship,

I only saw radar.

So when I got back
to the beach,

we had a, a debrief,

and that pull commander
[INDISTINCT] "Hey, sir,
what did you really see?"

He looked at me and says,
"Senior chief,

that thing looked like
a giant Tic Tac candy.

It was like 48 feet long,

about the same length
as my aircraft."

"And it had no wings.
No obvious propulsion systems.

We weren't getting any
identification off of it,

friend or foe."

Right then that object
that he encountered

went from 28,000 feet

down to the surface of the ocean
in less than a second.

.78 seconds.

-Whoa.
-Wow.

He went chasing it.

He gets in a little
dogfight with it.

He turns on it.
It turns on him.

At one point, it was right
in front of his aircraft,

and it, it just disappeared.

And that object went sixty
miles away in two seconds.

-Whoa.
-Yeah.

Wow.

I definitely think
it was very intriguing

that people sharing
their experiences

have a lot
of the same sighting.

I was commercial
lobster fishing,

and when I looked up

and I seen this really
bright green light

and a bunch of little
white lights around it

doing this little dance.

And then they just, boom,
came down to the water level

absolutely so incredibly fast.

DEMI: Maybe there are parallels,

maybe there are correlations

that I could draw
between stories.

We were nothing
but stunned silence in combat,

we're like,
"What did we just see?"

It was absolutely unbelievable.

KEVIN: This just came out

for a normal like craft to do,

are making g-force turns.

How fast--how many g-force?

KEVIN: About 600 g-forces.

-The human body can withstand

about eight g-forces
before we start to fly apart.

That would turn us into jelly.

-So fascinating.

that you think that ETs

might already be here?

that ETs might already be here?

And the reason why
we could see them suddenly

is because with the upgrades
to our--our radar system

that we had received.

MATTHEW: How has this like
affected or changed your life

since that experience?

I wanted to raise a flag
on this.

what the hell that was.

So I--I tried to tell anyone

that I thought
would listen to me

in the Department of Defense,

and I got laughed at, man,
and scoffed.

I--I gotta tell you, it broke

That 21 years,
I ended up quitting.

that it really happened.

whale songs into the sky.

And sometimes when he does it,
these things manifest.

to the whales too.

DEMI: A recent study
by MIT theorized

that projecting strong lasers
into the sky

could act as a direct signal
to ETs.

BRITTANY: We'll start
with the laser signaling first.

-And then from there,

we'll turn them off
and we'll watch the sky

-and see what happens.

So during a night watch,

everybody gets together,
there will be monitors.

There will be different types
of machines and equipment,

as well as lasers.

On a common night watch,
you will be aiming

those signals up to space
to see what signals back.

And, in our case,
because we're looking for USOs,

we're planning on putting
our lights straight down.

So by putting those lights
into the water

and pulsating underneath,

we're hoping that just maybe
we'll summon

some type of creature maybe

or some kind of light
to get those responses back

that we need
if there is a base there.

We got cameras set to watch.

We've got night scopes going.

what you want if we're trying
to reach something

or connect with something.

could respond to these signals

could be--
well, it could be a USO.

You know, one could plop
right in the water

right in front of us.

We could also spot something
like a UAP,

unidentified aerial phenomena.

Hell, I mean, a UFO could land
right in front of us

and out walks
four little gray men,

you know what I'm saying?

Or women.

We don't know their pronouns.

Anything could happen.

We'll see
what this pattern does.

we really have put out
enough signaling with lights.

What is really fascinating

furthering my belief

that they are here,

on our team.

whale songs into the sky,

and sometimes when he does it,
these things manifest.

in the whales, we also have
the other sound

from outer space that does sound
a lot like dolphins.

having us work together.

basically controlling
the certain sound,

interesting experiment.

to make connection
