All language subtitles for 15. Formatting The Paperback Book & Using Canva To Design a Standout Cover

Hello there, everybody, and welcome back into this lecture.

Now, in this lecture, we're going to be formatting the paperback version of the book, as well as

creating the paperback book cover.

Now, I have to tell you that for the paperback, your paperback book has to have at least 72 pages.

Now, as far as the e-book, there's no problem.

You can have a low page e-book, but for the paperback, that's actually not permitted.

You have to have at least 72 pages in your paperback, and that's why you have to go and add more texts.

Now you could add more paragraphs.

You could add more to make this a 72 page paperback.

Now, in my case, I would just, first of all, like to show you how to add the table of contents and

resize the PDF because that's important before we move on.

So here we got a table of contents that I've added using Google Docs.

Now I'm going to go ahead here and remove the table of contents.

Now here I can just keep that in there.

Now make sure that you select the spot where you want to add the table of contents.

In my opinion, it's better to add it before the intro.

So I'm going to go ahead over here and click on Insert.

I'm going to go to Table of Contents and then I would choose the dotted one.

Do not choose the links one because that is best suited for a book.

Now, since this is a PDF, it's a paperback that normally is going to be printed and people are going

to have as a physical book in their bookshelves, you should have this particular version of the table

of contents, which is easy on the eye because it directs you exactly to where you want to go.

So it tells you exactly where each page is.

So now that we got this out of the way, the next thing I would like to remind you, I said it in the

beginning and I'm going to say it again.

The paperback has to be at least 72 pages long.

If it's not 72 pages long or more, you cannot actually use it.

Now, also, the number of pages of the paperback impacts, the paperback book cover, it impacts the

paperback book cover.

And I'll tell you why.

Now, the more the pages, the bigger the spine.

For example, I can show you the paperback book cover of my book that I've published, which is 153

page book.

And you can see right here that that is significantly different.

You can see over here that the spine is big.

And better yet for the hardcover, the spine is even bigger, right?

So if you look at the hardcover, the spine is even bigger because the hardcover pages are pretty thick,

okay?

And it's much bigger.

So right now I'm going to tell you what I'm going to do.

I'm going to use the manuscript of my old book.

Right.

But at the same time, I'd like to show you here one trick that you need to do.

Now that you've added the table of contents, you made sure that you've added everything you wanted

to add.

Now make sure that the page is well formatted.

It's more 72 pages or more.

All right.

So that means you're going to have to go and add some content, then go over here and click on on file.

Now make sure you name your file here.

I have named it ChatGPT The Revolution that will change the world paperback manuscript.

And you come over here to file and you click download and then you download this as a PDF.

Now, once you download it as a PDF, you still have one thing to do.

Now, since the paperback is a six by nine, that's exactly what we want to publish.

You got to make sure that it's a six by nine PDF as well.

So you need to go to this website called pdf Resizer.

And on this website what you'll do is you'll basically resize the PDF into a six by nine format.

That's what you're going to do.

So over here you choose the file which we have just downloaded right now, making sure that it is 72

pages or more, right?

If it's not 72 pages or more, it's not going to work.

Okay.

So upload your PDF now.

It's going to take a little bit of time, not that much.

And also it depends on how many pages.

So here, click set, custom page size, and here you select the inches instead of millimeters, select

inches, click six by nine.

So you'd have to add it manually and then start Now, once the process starts, it's going to go ahead

and generate for you a six by nine PDF version.

Now in the meantime, over here my book that I'm going to use just as a let's just say I'm going to

use it just to teach you how to publish a book.

Now, this book right here is 152 pages.

Now that size is going to impact on the paperback cover.

Now there is a tool called cover calculator.

So if you go actually and look for cover calculator, by the way, I'm going to leave it to you in the

resources section of this lecture.

So if you click on the resources of this lecture, you'll be able to access Amazon KDP calculator.

The website is KDP, Amazon.com slash cover calculator.

Now when you go over there, select the binding type paperback, the interior type.

I'm going to I'm going to just select the standard color paperback type white paper.

Now, if you want to know the difference between black and white and premium color and standard color,

actually black and white is the most optimal.

If you want to cut down on the prices because the printing costs are going to be much lower.

The premium color is the.

The most expensive when it comes to printing, which means that you're going to have to raise your prices

down up a notch because you just want you need to break even, right?

So if you want to make money, you have to raise your costs because the cost of printing for premium

color is more expensive than black and white and is actually even more expensive than standard color.

And the price of printing standard color books is more than the price of printing a black and white

color.

I hope that is easy to understand.

So I'm going to click standard color right here the paper type and choose white paper, paper, turn

direction choose left to right measurement units is always inches right interior trim size.

Actually it's a six by nine inches.

So right here I'm going to select six by nine and the pages count is 152.

Remember, your book should be at least at least 72 pages long.

All right.

In terms of the number of pages.

So I'm going to calculate the dimensions right here.

And here are the dimensions of the paperback book cover.

Now let's head back to Canva.

And I've already designed the paperback book cover for this book, but I'm going to do the design once

again.

Right.

And you watching me.

So let's take this step by step, right?

So I'm going to go over to Canva right here.

And what I will do is I will open up a Canva design.

That's what you need to do now.

Make sure that once you've downloaded your PDF, make sure that you cut it and you paste it in your

in your book right here in your book elements to make sure that you have it here.

There you go.

That when we want to use it next.

And then here on Canva, click on create a design select custom size here, set this up to inches instead

of pixels.

And then go back right here to the Amazon KDP cover calculator and copy these measurements.

So copy the width.

Place it right here and then go back again and copy the height.

So based on these, based on these, we're going to create our paperback.

And just like I said, it depends on the number of pages, right?

So the paperback book covers spine and and measurements depend on the number of pages.

The bigger the pages, the bigger the spine.

So right now that we've done this, the next thing to do would be to download this template.

So if you scroll down right here, you can see that there is a template you can download.

So click on the download button and then open up this particular zip file right here.

And then you scroll here, there's the Wizard option, click on Wizard Option, click on Finish.

There you go.

Right now you'll be able to access the paperback template if you open it.

It's a image which you can download and you can upload into Canva, which is exactly what I'm going

to do right now.

So I'm going to download this image right here in my list of downloads.

And then we go head back to Canva.

Right now here on Canva, we want to use this.

We want to use this to keep the measurements correct.

So I'm going to upload the file right here.

Click on your paperback.

There you go.

Now, it's just a way that we can measure stuff.

Now click on it and what you want to do.

You want to make sure that it fits from here to here and it should fit.

Now, let me explain stuff to you.

Now, actually, I got to take you to the bookshelf so that you learn this more.

Now, if I take you to the bookshelf, I'm going to show you a book that I purposely made it fail so

that you can learn why you should actually make sure that you respect these measurements.

So here there is the Kindle e-book.

This is the one I'm talking about, so I'm just going to pretend that I'm continuing the setup.

All of this is to access the Previewer so that I can show you measurements to respect.

Right.

So I'm going to go to the paperback content, continue without saving.

And here I can actually access the Previewer.

And I made this a fail just to show you that you shouldn't exceed the limits of the paperback borders.

So here it was, perfectly well suited here.

And now let's go and have a look.

I can close the PDF resize or I can also close this one as well.

I can keep this canva tab open because it has the design that we're going to use.

And focus carefully with me right now.

Please give me your ear for one minute.

Now, if I zoom, it doesn't work.

So let me just click the zoom of of Amazon here.

If I zoom, see this red line right here?

That's the red line that you shouldn't cross with the text, your text and logos and everything that

you want to appear when the book is printed should be inside, not outside or touching or stepping outside

of the border.

For instance.

I have a perfect example for you.

This is a logo passive income, Gen Z and the logo.

And you can see over here that this overstepped the line, which means that that part is not going to

be printed.

Okay?

It's not there is a risk that it will not be printed.

Now, this particular side right here, this particular side.

From the white border to the top.

That side is actually going to be cut with the the let's just say the scissors.

They're going to cut this part from this particular white side with the dots, with the black dots to

the top.

That side is going to be cut.

Now, I hope that you understand what I'm talking about here.

I can actually exit the print Previewer.

And then let's go back to Canva right now and design our paper back now, because we've already created

the e-book version and because the e-book version was a six, it was not a six by nine X, it was a

16.66 by 26.66in, which means that over here we're going to have to add a different this because now

this is a six by nine book, but I'm going to have to get the measurements correct and let me show you

how to get it.

Now, for once, go ahead and upload your book, the the version of the book that you've created.

So go to your book files and then select your book cover.

Now, this is not permanent.

We're just going to use it to measure how much should be the cover size for the e-book, because the

the e-book is really it's the the front of the paperback.

Right?

So here, let's click so this is the front cover of the paperback.

Now zoom to the max and then scroll up a little bit.

Now, the reason why you want to zoom to the max is because you want to have extra control.

Now, see this this particular blue line, that blue line, you should not exceed it with your paperback.

You should not exceed it with your cover.

So make sure that you are on top of it, but not too much on top.

Just on top of it.

Right.

So and that's what we're going to do here.

I'm going to be on top because that part is actually the spine.

That's where the spine starts.

So right here, you can see that this is perfectly well done.

Now I can scroll a little bit and I can zoom out.

Now, when you zoom out, you can actually make this larger.

Right now.

That was the problem.

Let me just go back.

You know, I've got to fix this problem.

You know, it starts really it starts to to vibrate sometimes.

All right.

So I'm going to zoom in a little bit and zoom in to the max now.

So here you can see that even after I take the book and put it down at the this particular red line,

not red line, but the it's normally the red line, but now it's colored in black.

Now you can see I'm over it.

But.

The book is not the perfect size.

There is still a gap right here.

Right there is this gap.

How do we fill that?

Well, we actually have a way we can crop the book like this.

But the only issue is, as far as you can see now, the logo, there is a risk that actually parts of

the logo are are have entered the uncharted chartered territory.

Right?

So they are here in the red territory.

And so what I would like to do here, I would like you to pay very careful attention with me.

I would like you to zoom a little bit more and then to click right here.

Okay.

Now select your book and then from here, just slightly crop it some more to cover.

And it's a six by nine book, so I'm going to delete it now.

Now that we know the exact measurements that will work, we're going to go to our actually, this is

the paperback book cover.

And this paperback book cover, you need to make sure it's a six by nine inches.

And how do you do that?

Well, you take the book cover that you have created.

You come over here to click on create a new design.

And then what you do is you just click custom size.

Choose a six by nine inches or use the custom size as well.

And then here, go back to Canva, open up your original paperback or original book cover, which is

1006 hundred by 2560 pixels.

Hear me out Now.

Make sure that you select everything in here and unlock it, because we're going to copy all of this

stuff.

So I'm going to unlock the robot.

I'm also going to unlock these two things.

Actually, they're already unlocked.

This one as well.

Unlock it.

Unlock everything.

Unlock everything.

Okay.

So unlock everything.

And now what we want to do is an operation.

Control everything.

Control C come back right here.

Control V into the six by nine.

Now, here it was copied.

Except for the fact that you can see it's not copied.

Really?

Great.

So what you would need to do right now is you would need to resize this stuff.

Now, in my case, I'm actually not going to need to do it because I have the Resizer and the Resizer.

This is a pro feature and what it helps me do is it helps me resize this from six by nine inches.

Okay?

And actually now I can I can export this as a six by nine inches to a new tab.

Even though already done it.

But I can show you how it works.

So you can click on copy resize.

Now it's going to take it to a new tab and this is how it is.

And you can see that now it is a six by nine, except for the fact that the bottom here, you can see

that here, this stuff needs to go and cover that part.

So I'm going to select this now, not the image.

I'm talking about this shape now.

It's for some reason I cannot select it.

Okay.

So.

I think it's because it's grouped.

So let me ungroup it.

And then let's select it now.

And now it works.

So make sure that you cover from side to side.

And now you can download your six by nine e-book with a good gap at the top, which is pretty good.

And you can just download this PNG format.

And now once that's downloaded, you can click all of those windows and come back to your paperback

cover.

Now this is a lofty task, I understand, but there is no way around this, so I'm going to go and click

on Upload files and here's what I'm going to do.

Hear me out.

I'm going to go over here and I'm simply going to use this e-book that I have just or e-book cover that

I have just resized into a six by nine inches e-book and click on it.

And then what you want to do, you want to put it right here and zoom to the max again.

Then scroll up, up, up, up, up.

And then you take this and then literally put it on top of the blue border.

And on top of the black border as well.

But make sure it's not really over.

Right.

It should be over them, but not very, very I would say not excessive because that will going to destroy

the aesthetics of your book.

So here, make sure that you resize this slowly but surely, slowly but surely, slowly but surely,

until it fits.

And for extra precision, zoom to the max, scroll very, very much down.

And then right here from the side, you can just keep taking this, dragging it.

Drag, drag, drag, drag, drag until it's perfectly on top.

There you go.

It's perfect.

All right.

So from one side, there is a gap.

So let me just cover it.

It's very slight.

Doesn't even appear.

But let me just cover it slightly.

And I think we've done a pretty good job.

Let me see from the top.

All right.

So from the top, it looks fine.

From the spine.

It looks fine.

Everything looks fine right now.

So now in order to make sure that this stays like this, click on it and lock the position.

So now whenever I do something that will stay in its place, let me just go back in time.

All right.

So that will stay in place.

Now, what you want to do, you want to select this, that the template and you want to reduce its transparency

to 29 or 30 or whatever.

And then what we want to do here, as far as you can see, I want to add a description, a brain, a

background and my logo.

But first off, what exactly is the background color that we need to add?

So in order to first of all, to add a background color, you have to move this slightly here and you

have to click this page and select a background.

Now for me, I would select a kind of bluish dark, bluish background like this.

There you go.

And now we can get this back into position.

Okay, So there you go.

Let me see from the top if it's positioned well.

All right.

So it's fine.

Okay.

Now that it is in position, what we can do right now is we can go and fetch a a neurons some neurons

that we want to put as background.

So if I look for neurons, there's a lot of photos here and I can actually use all of these photos because

I use the pro subscription.

But for those of you who don't have the pro subscription, you can use these free photos right here.

So the ones that don't have the crown are actually free.

Now, in my case, what I would go for is I would go for particularly this one.

Okay, So that one is pretty cool.

And it's not it's it's pro actually, what I want to do is I want to rotate this thing 90 degrees.

Just like I said, Canva needs to fix that issue of the trembling.

And what you want to do, you want to put this down here.

And again, you want to do that lofty task of zooming.

To the max, scroll to the top scroll from here as well, and make sure that this is in the borders.

There you go.

And now zoom out.

Zoom out.

Zoom out again.

And then what you want to do, you want to crop this from the bottom and you want to also crop it from

the sides.

And then you want to zoom out and you want to scroll to the very bottom.

And then from here as well.

And then what you want to do, you want to get this down here and put it on top of that black line.

And then here you want to take it down a little bit from here as well.

And cover that part as well.

Make sure that you cover it meaningfully.

I think we've done a pretty good job.

So so right now that's good.

But what I would like to do, since there's already a background color, I would like to overlap this

with the background color by eliminating the transparency, even though you can see that the it's not

looking quite well right now, but believe me, it's going to look much better.

So now I'm going to take this image and I'm going to lock it.

And what I would want to do now is I would want to add a brain.

So there's a lot of brains in here.

So let's go and look for AI brain.

Let's just pick an AI brain that we have over here.

So there's a lot of good brains.

There you go.

I'm going to pick one that goes with the flow, one that is blue in color.

I have this one here.

I didn't really like it that much.

So what I would do is I would use this one instead.

And what I would do, I would use the Canva Pro feature, which can remove the background.

Remember as well that you can remove the background with free websites like Remove.bg.

Now once the background is removed, I'm going to just simply place this in the middle.

Okay, let's just wait a second here.

Wait a moment.

There you go.

Okay, now let's crop this from this side.

Let's crop it from this side as well.

Let's crop it from here.

And what I would like to do, I'd like to select that brain and remove its transparency, actually.

It was not quite selected.

Let me select it again.

All right, now it finally works.

There you go.

Now that we removed a little bit of its transparency, I can put it right here.

Make sure it is centered.

But it is perfectly centered.

You can actually lock it, but I would just like to keep it that way.

I'm going to go and add my logo for branding, even though I've added my logo here, but it's only logical

to add it here as well.

So I'm going to go for logo in my uploads.

And by the way, look at this, this yellow yellow side here is where they're going to place the barcode.

So don't tamper with that.

Don't put anything in there.

Just keep it, keep it like that.

Amazon is going to put their their code right there.

They're going to take care of it.

So here I'm going to reduce my logo a little bit and place it down to the side, zoom in, scroll down

for aesthetics, make sure that the logo is pretty well placed and zoom out slightly and just simply

place it on top.

There you go.

Let's crop.

I'm just trying to get the perfect position.

I think this is pretty cool.

All right.

And remember, do not exceed the red line.

This red line.

The first red line.

Do not exceed it with any text.

Because if you do, that text will not appear.

So right now that we've taken care of this, the only thing left is the description.

Now, as far as the description is concerned, go ahead over here.

Click some text, add a heading.

Now, reduce the size of this to maybe 22.

There you go.

You can also change the font.

Now, because I've used Helvetica, I'm just going to use Helvetica.

Again, you can make it bold, but let's just decide about that later.

And now go back to ChatGPT and ask it to write a description for your book.

So I'm going to say write a description.

That I want to put.

In the back of the paperback book cover and do not make it more than two paragraphs.

Make it short.

So it's going to go ahead.

Right now.

It's going to generate a book description that I want to put in the back that is worthy of a book description.

And so it's not it's not very complex here, but let's just wait.

So two paragraphs.

Pretty cool, right?

Let me copy this.

I'm going to copy it with this as well.

So copy it.

And then we go back, guess what to our book.

Now zoom in quite a little bit, scroll to the top and then remove this part and Ctrl V to put your

text.

You can see that this is quite big, so click on it again here and you can change the font right by

reducing it.

Now, maybe 13 would do.

Let me just spread it to the sides and see if 13 would do if we spread it to the sides.

I think it does the job, but it's still a little bit bigger.

So let's reduce it to 11.

Let's crank this up a little bit like this.

Now add a little bit of spacing in between the lines to make sure that people can actually read this

and just place it in the center centered with the robot.

Now you can keep it in white color.

But another thing here is click to align it left and then again check that it is perfectly centered,

right?

And what I want it to be.

I want it to be perfectly aligned with the ChatGPT.

You can see here, I want it to be aligned like this with this.

So I'm just going to have to reduce it down a little bit like this.

There you go.

Yep.

I think now it does the job.

Now, as far as the brain, we can reduce it a little bit down, make sure it's not it's not on top

of the barcode.

There you go.

So now we can we can delete the template.

How would you delete the template?

Just zoom in and click the template from here because there's this gap and hit enter and it's deleted.

Now the only issue is if you delete the template, you're going to have to make sure that before you

do that, you add your your book title in the spine.

So I'm going to zoom in again and I'm going to go back, add the template again.

By just going back, the template was added and what I will do right now, I will add a subheading or

a heading and I would go and take my book title.

So this is the book title Chad GPG The Revolution That Will Change the World.

Copy that title.

Come back over here to the paperback cover, paste it in and make sure that you reduce it in size,

but not that much.

Just reduce, reduce, reduce.

Reduce again.

Reduce again.

And now what you can do is you can actually rotate this 90 degrees.

You guess what I'm doing here.

Now it's perfectly fit in there, but you need to make sure that you zoom and you need to make sure

it's centered, right?

Now, here, if you scroll to the bottom, there's this again, this red line, and these are the red

lines here as well.

You need to make sure that your text is contained here within the the white space.

Let's just make sure it is.

Yep, it is.

And we can actually reduce the text down a little bit like this.

Scroll down.

I'd like to put my title here.

Now the font is not the one I would I want, so I'm just going to change it later.

So put it down like this.

There you go.

That's the position.

Zoom in.

And make sure this is centered.

There you go.

It's centered.

Perfect.

Now, I'm going to change the font right now.

Hopefully there's no collateral damages.

Change it to Helvetica.

Yeah, it's still pretty good.

And you can actually make it bold.

But what I would recommend you to do is go to the spacing and add some letter spacing.

You know, add a little bit of letter spacing to basically just make sure that it is fine.

Now, here, what I can do is just scroll up.

Okay.

So the problem is that.

All right, you know what?

I'm just going to let it be as it is.

Okay.

Now we can make it bold if we wanted to, but.

Okay, so let me just select everything.

Letter spacing.

You can see what that when I add the letter spacing.

The problem is that.

It's just so let's just put it back at zero.

Let's try to make it bold.

I think that bold works.

And it is centered.

And it is perfect.

So now we are ready to eliminate the template.

So I'm going to click on the template from here and eliminate it.

And right now, if we look out, this is our final version of the paperback book cover.

Now you can also add extra, extra stuff if you want to, but in my opinion, this is enough.

This is pretty cool.

I'm not going to add anything more than this.

Okay.

It's pretty good of a book.

Enough.

Now, here you can make this perhaps a little bit less transparent.

And what we can do is we can put the brain position it forward.

Now, as far as the image, that image, we need to unlock it.

Unlock it and I would like to position it backward now.

It's already backward.

And yep.

So I think that right now.

Let's just reduce the transparency of the image some more.

There you go.

And it does really look cool.

Maybe give the brain a little bit more transparency.

Now, let's have a look at one final look at this before we go and upload it in the next video to Amazon

KDP.

So you can see you can see that it looks pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure it's not going to have any issues when we upload it.

And so there you go.

Now when you download your manuscript paperback cover for your book, you have to make sure that it's

in the PDF format.

So it's not like the e-book when it's a jpg or this should be PDF.

I'm going to go back right here.

Let's just close this window.

We don't need it for now.

But when we try to design the hardcover book, we're going to need it.

So here I'm going to say paperback.

Book cover.

There you go.

And go ahead to the share button.

Click on download and select the PDF with standard one, which is best for documents and emailing and

in my opinion, don't really flatten it, just keep it as it is.

And once it's downloaded you can actually preview.

over and over and over until you really learn it to the to the core.
