One thing I noticed
right off the bat was the roof

and how you have the pixels
standing straight up,

which I don't know
how you do with the wind here.

I created a metal frame
and everything is tied up,

both sides of the house.

No nail, no screw,
nothing.

I don't have nothing
on that roof

that gonna damage
the roof.

It is sturdy.
Yes.

That thing's not going
anywhere.

It's not gonna move it.

So I know that you have
"Merry Christmas,"

but then I also see
"Buon Natale."

We are Italians,
so I need my "Buon Natale"..

And that's why we put it on top
on the garage.

It's perfect.
And I love the precision of it.

I love the detail.

It all started
because Santa's reindeers

couldn't go up the hill.

you merge the cultures.

"Buon Natale"
and "Merry Christmas,"

and the donkey
and the reindeer and Santa.

You brought it all together
right here on your one property.

Kids love that,
and they point all day long.

Who doesn't love a donkey,

Right. Absolutely.
Who does not love a donkey?

I'm a fireman,
so we have a fire department

and police department

honoring
all first responders.

I love that.

All the wire there inside is
protected from the water.

You know, keep that job
a little bit cleaner.

Well, and the fact that
you got green so it just
blends in with the grass.

spray-painted.

I've always been into gardening,

since I was little kid.

Small vegetables --
I don't care about that stuff.

Bigger's better.

Last year I grew the world's
biggest butternut squash

at 65 1/2 pounds.

So I grow big produce,
big vegetables,

and I go big
with my Christmas display.

Okay, guys, so as you know,
we're on "The Great Christmas
Light Fight" this year,

so I have drawn out a big plan.

Over here, we have the big
inflatables, big mega trees.

And when you get past the
pumpkin, we have candy canes.

There we go.
All right, so that's good.

We have the pumpkin vine.

This is gonna be
an awesome vine.

This year, with
my display, I'm really trying

to tell the story
of how I grow a big pumpkin.

We have a whole vine that you
can look and see how it grows.

Put it, like,
down towards the pumpkin

so it looks like it's watering
a pumpkin. That's it.

And we have
a big surprise for Taniya.

I cannot wait for her
to see it.

I think this is the last thing
we need. What do you think?

is the Topsfield Fair.

This is where I grew up.

We are very familiar
with the fair.

For the annual weigh-off
there every year,

I grow giant pumpkins
and giant squash.

When you say "giant,"
what are we talking about?

We're talking, like,
over 1,000 pounds.

What?!
Yeah, they are big.

What?
I mean, how old are you?

20 years old.
First of all, wow.

Okay? How did that parlay
into Christmas lights?

I've always been
into Christmas.

I've actually watched the show
when I was -- It goes way back,

when I was 10 years old.

And when the show actually...

The show made me want to go
bigger and bigger every year.

And I like to go big
with everything.

So I can't just do the pumpkins.
I have to do the lights, too.

I can't wait
to see your lights.

So how do
we get it started?

Since we have an annual
weigh-off at the Topsfield Fair,

I figured
we'd have one tonight.

So what we have here is, we have
a 30-pound butternut squash.

Look at this thing!

This is a person.
Looks like a human.

It's big.

How many? 30 pounds?
30 pounds.

Not as big as my world record
last year of 65 pounds, but...

65? I'm glad you didn't
just hand me a 65-pound squash,

'cause I'd be
on the ground.

It might break the scale.

So place the butternut
on the scale,

and then that will
activate the lights.

All right, so let's count down
from 3, 2, 1.

And what do you want us
to say?

"Merry..."

and it has over 3,000 lights

In previous years,
I've only had one white strand

wrapped around this PVC,
so it wasn't enclosed like this.

But I really wanted
to make it feel enclosed.

It's its own whole moment.

Absolutely.

Look at all the mega trees.
How many of them are there?

I believe there's 19.
Wow.

I love
this candy cane land.

Canes arranged in
different heights.

I want to get that effect.

It's like a forest
of candy canes.
Yeah.

This is the "wow" moment.

You've literally draped
this house.

That was my goal this year --

to just cover
the whole house.

How many inches apart
are these?
3 inches at the most.

Do you get a ruler out,
or you eyeball?

I eyeball it,
but I'm very particular.

I can tell.

I didn't want any spaces
with no lights.

Right. Well, there's no spaces
with no lights.

There's 30,000 lights.

Oh, 30,000?
30,000.

Looking at it, it looks like
you have a million.

Up close,
you can see the strands.
Yeah.

But when you're looking at it
from back there...

You can't see the strands.

...you can't see the strands.
Yep.

You won't believe what I used
to put the lights on the house.

Tell me.
Thumbtacks.

Come on. First of all,
let me look at your thumbs.

Are they all blistered?

A few weeks ago,
there was a big blister.
I bet.

There's well over a thousand
thumbtacks in the house.

I can't even see them.
What are they, clear?

Yeah, clear thumbtacks, yeah.
Okay. I see it down there.

A lot of times, people
will not do lights on the roof.

Yep.
So what if you decide
to do that?

I just wanted to cover
everything.

I actually was really afraid
of heights a few years ago.

I didn't even go on the roof.
Come on.

Yeah.
Putting Christmas lights up

has made me more comfortable
going on the roof.

You're telling me
that Christmas lights have

helped you overcome
your fear of heights.
They have, they have.

Absolutely. 100%.

As I'm talking to you,

I have to keep reminding myself
that you're a kid.

Yeah.
You know what I mean?

You're a grown-up,
but you're a kid.
Yeah.

Like, the fact
that you're doing all of this

is just so incredible,
Henry.

So this is where it all
starts, growing a big pumpkin

or a butternut squash.

It all starts
from the seeds.

Just one seed makes
these plants right here.

So it goes from this,
and as you look at your feet,

it goes into a big vine.

And we also made
these PVC pumpkins.

Oh.
We used a heat gun.

So we bent all the PVC.

I love the watering can with the
lights pouring out of it. Oh!

wanted to give that look

and feel -- Like, as you're
watering a pumpkin,

it gets bigger and bigger.

I love when people integrate
their passion

into their display.

something gets messed up,

he'll just keep trying

began when I was a kid.

We grew up in an apartment,

but we used to deck
that place out big-time.

The community had a decorating
contest,

and we took first place.

What would a display be
without lots of lights

and lots of blow molds?

So our display is so massive

that we've moved across
the country twice,

and it took almost
two 18-wheeler tractor trailers

to move just
the Christmas decorations.

Guys, look.
I found more blow molds.

Where am I supposed
to put them?

There's always room
for more blow molds.

Our blow mold collection
is the passion in our display.

This is
a European blow mold.

We have over 600 blow molds.

We had stuff all the way back
to the 1950s and '60s.

Start putting the heads back
on there.

We're really preserving
that history of Christmas

so that everybody
can enjoy it today.

How's it looking, Mom?
They're so cute.

Kim's ability to participate
physically in the display

has been challenged
the last couple years.

She was diagnosed with
a neurological disorder.

I got one more for you.

I now have trouble speaking,
limited mobility,

and it's hard to do daily tasks,

let alone help Brian
with the display.

Mom had a great idea
about bringing

our Christmas celebration
from the inside to the outside.

You made that happen.

Well, this is the first thing
that drew my eye.

It's so bright.
It's beautiful.

It's so vintage.
And there's so many of them.

There are. There's
almost 30 of them here.

It took several years
to collect these.

They're really hard to find.

And they do have
their own life cycle.

Sometimes you have to retire
and repair them,

and trying to find them again
is getting harder and harder.

Well, they are aging
quite well.

Thank you. So the really
cool thing about these is,

there's different boys and girls
and different colored hair.

You can just take
the heads off

if you don't like
the way they're organized

and you can move them
around and switch them around.

Oh, don't!
This is freaking me out.

You should see when I first set
it up and no heads are on.

It's a little creepy.
I can imagine.

That's for Halloween.

I just love the vintage-ness
of everything.

It's just so classic.

It just reminds me
of old-school Christmas.

I'm seeing a whole other part
of your display,

and that is your house
and the roof.
Taniya...

It looks awesome, and it's
a great use of space up there.

This is where we kind
of deviate

a little bit
from the blow molds

and we pull in
some wire frame structures.

You see the wreath on the roof
with the "believe"?

I made that out of PVC pipe.

You did?
It's 14 foot tall.

The bow alone
is about 6 feet.
No way!

Yes way.
We have over 150 strobe lights

that kind of accent
the display...

Amazing.
...and give it that pop
and that sparkle.

And it really, really gives you
that magic in the display.

We're the Smith family,

and this is how
we do Christmas in the country!

We own and
operate a mobile home park.

We've got about 40 acres.

About half of that
is the mobile home park,

and the rest of it
is our home

back here with
the light display.

The light display, it takes up
about 4 or 5 acres.

How does that look?
That looks good.

One of the things that sets
our display apart is the fact

that you don't just drive by
and look at it.

You actually go through
the walk-through

and our walk-through
is about a quarter of a mile.

We try to save any way we can
and repurpose items.

It's made of foam insulation.

That's all there is to it.

We also will make anything
that we can.

I melt the two hangers
together with a soldering iron.

Now you zip-tie
the hangers together.

Think you can make about 20 more
of them real quick?

We would always decorate
for the mobile home park

so they could come and bring
their friends and family.

And in 2019, we decided
to make a walk-through,

and the general public found out
about it. They loved it.

And so each year since then,
we have tried to do as much

as we could to make it
better and better.

Well, I'm pretty old school
myself,

so I'm loving this.

I love this little creek that
you have going by.

The stream is made from
used rubber roofing.

The water is pumped
from down at the creek

into a pond over here
and it recirculates like that.

So there is
an actual creek, but this is...

There's a creek down there.
We're on top of a hill.

Yeah.
So there's no way
that this creek

would naturally find its way
up here.
No, no.

But you know what?
We wanted a stream.

Really?
And so we made one.

It's really incredible.

Oh, look at the farm!
This is adorable.

You've got the little fence here
and the piggy.

I mean, this is so great.
And the cow.

I was adopted when I was
8 years old

by a family
who had a big farm.

Yeah.
And I didn't have

the typical family joys
and stuff

at Christmas
that other people had.

So I want to make sure that
we can give that to other kids

so they have that joy.

I just love to make
other people happy.

I just love the fact that
you're bringing a piece of you

right into the display.
Yeah.

So of course
it's important to you.
Absolutely.

Who would ever think that a cow
would tie in with Christmas?

Right.
But it does here.

Over here, being as how
we have a mobile home park,

you would kind of expect
to see

something mobile-home-related
in the display.
Right.

So this is
a 64-foot 1970 model.

It had been abandoned.

Nobody wanted it.
I couldn't give it away.

Really?
And Susan said,
"Rather than tear it down

and haul it to the dump,
we need storage."

Ah! That's so smart.
So we could set it up

and decorate it
for the holidays on the outside.

And people actually come by

to ask if it's
available to rent.

We say,
"No, no, no, no, no."

No way! That is really cool.
I love it.

I love the candy
around the windows

and all the props
that you did.

You even have the picture in
the window,

- the actual movement.
- Right.

So it feels like this storage
shed is actually someone's home.

It's awesome.

How do you plan
what's going where?

Susan gets the final say.
She's like,

"That really needs to be there,"
and, like, "Okay."

He doesn't do it that easily.

I'm feeling that snowman.

If he wants to get warm,

So we've made
a little fire pit for him.

This is where you bring
the humor into your display.

It's just so fun.

Look at the dinosaur park.

And skating hippos.

I can see why kids would love
every single part of it.

- The kids must go nuts.
- Yes, they love it.

Can you guess what that is?
The swans?

Count them.

There you go.

We have been trying
to put together

the 12 days of Christmas.
Yes.

We have got the seven swans
a-swimming so far.

Okay.
And up there,

we've got two geese a-laying.

You're supposed to have six.

But with inflation the way
it is, we've only got two.

So if I come back in
a couple more years,
you'll have them all?

We're gonna try.

Hopefully.

We try to be as frugal
as possible.

And one of the things that
we have

is these snowflakes right here.

They are made
from coat hangers.

I just see that right now.

You take the coat hangers, and
then I take a soldering iron,

and I melt them together.
Smart.

And then I put them
together with zip ties.

That is one of the coolest

Christmas DIYs
I've ever seen.

And I mean it. It's sturdy,
it's durable, it's inexpensive,

and it makes
a fantastic snowflake.

Absolutely.
Right.

And they're really elegant.
Yes.

They're very pretty.
It's amazing.

Yeah.

We're in unicorn land.

The kids love unicorns.

And we got a huge,
ginormous deer right here.

If you tell me
you built this yourself...

I did.
What?!

It was cut out of plywood,

painted, and put together.

How tall is that
from floor to the top?

15 foot.
It's so cool.

It's very simple.
It is.

But I think that's
what makes it so beautiful.

A display like this,
it's really nice,

and I love all the thought

and energy that went into
how you've laid it out

so that
you can walk through it

and see something different
at every single corner.

This display has been a
completely immersive experience.

Getting to see everything
up close and in detail,

it's just such
a great experience.

There's no end
to all the different things

that I saw on this display.

It's about 12 miles.

We got
all our steps in today.

I think we did.

That was just awesome
and beautiful

from every single corner
we turned, and so much DIY

in here, from man-made creeks,
to your DIY snowflake hangers,

to that gigantic
deer cutout.

You know, for somebody
who started off not having

Christmas as a child

to blowing it out of the park,
it's incredible.

It really is fun.
It allows me to be a kid again.

I'm 55, but I still feel
like a kid.

I love to look out here and see
the progression of the display.

When you see the response from
other kids and their parents,

it just makes you want
to work harder and do more

so you can bring
more happiness to people.
