called Koji-hara-monchu.

In Okinawa, "monchu"means "clan",

and "hara"means "family".

There are 29 haras

and 42 monchus.

Each hara has its own tomb.

The four tombs in front

from the shiruhirashi.

The one in back is called the tuchi.

When a clan-member dies

the corpse is put
into the shiruhirashi.

After 3 years,
the body is taken out

and placed in the tuchi.

However, a confidential rule
among the villagers

provides that anyone over 80,

or who has brought honour
to the clan,

shall be put into the tuchi
immediately,

while anyone under 7 or who has

dishonoured the clan

shall not be buried
in the tombs at all.

In this cave-shelter was stationed
the "Unit of the Lily",

i.e. the nurses of the
3rd Medical Unit.

In this area there were four shelters

the CHQ, and the
1st, 2nd and 3rd Medical Units.

It was in the 3rd Unit's shelter

that the entire staff of nurses was
wiped out,

except for three survivors.

On the 18th of June,
Showa 20, 1945, the 1st Unit

learned the US troops were
only 60 yards away.

They contacted the 2nd Unit

and both shelters could be evacuated.

But the 3rd Unit was so isolated

that they were unaware of their
predicament till the next day.

Evacuation was set for
June 20th, at dawn.

On the last evening they
held the ceremony that

marked a unit's dispersal.

Each took part in an impromptu show

and at the end they sang
"Going Over The Sea".

That, however,
was no longer possible.

The next day, they died.

among civilians and soldiers

of Okinawan origin.
