It was the scariest thing
I've ever experienced.

I was terrified
out of my mind.

It was something not human.

Something evil was trying
to get into the house.

I was afraid
that I might die.

Dad, don't!

I said, "Let's go ghost
hunting here one night."

What's that?

It turned out to be
nothing like what I expected.

I didn't expect it
to be haunted.

I just expected he and I
would have fun,

and it was
phenomenally haunted.

It was unbelievable.

My name's Michaela.

I have both a respect
and a fear for this thing

that I never thought that
I would ever experience
in my life.

I was afraid
that this creature

might kill me.

My name
is Bryon Jordan Meller.

I'm Michaela's
younger brother.

It definitely was the most
terrified I've ever been

in my whole entire life.

We are Cherokee Indian.

We come from a long line,
at least ten generations,

of medicine men and women.

And that's
on my mother's side.

My Native grandparents,
they would share stories

and legends with us.

We would go
to my grandparents

when I was younger almost
every weekend, honestly.

All the time.

They're really
sweet people,

and they've always taught us
to keep an open mind.

My grandparents would take us
out to explore the woods.

I just like to go
hunting with my grandpa.

We loved
spending time with them.

- All good?
- Yeah.

Our parents were divorced,

so we were kind of
the product of a broken
family, unfortunately.

My father is very logical.

He's always studying,
and he's very much...

There is always
an explanation for everything.

He prefers
to look at the facts

and only the facts.

Since my dad was practical
and my grandparents
were more spiritual,

I was hesitant
about some things,

but I was also
very open-minded.

So willing to, you know,

accept things
for what they are.

We moved
into a little town

just outside
of St. Louis, Missouri,

on the Illinois side
of the Mississippi River.

I was already in my 20s,

and my brother
was about to turn 20.

But we were still
living at home

because we were
going to school.

There's forests
from one side

crossing the whole
entire length of our backyard.

It's a very open backyard.

Beyond that, it opens up
into just a wooded area.

My dog's name was Cicero.
He was the sweetest dog.

I don't think
he could hurt a fly.

Cicero, what do you want?

He was wonderful.

I'm sleeping.
Want to go out? Let's go.

I woke up at 3:00
because Cicero

had to go outside
and use the bathroom.

Come on, Cicero. Let's go.
Let's go outside. Come on.

I put the leash on.

We went outside.

He got distracted
and was like,

"I'm going to play around

instead of going
to the bathroom."

Cicero?

And, so, I, you know...

I whistled at him
to get his attention.

What is going on?

There was
no sound around me,

and I thought
that was a little peculiar
because he...

Especially at this house,
you know,

there's a lot of cicadas.

But there was...
There was no noise.

I thought
that was a little odd.

Cicero pushed himself up
against my legs,

and at that point

is when everything else
unfolded.

He was whimpering and scared,

and then that's
when I felt the prickle,

like, of my hair starting
to stand on end

and I felt weird,

like tingling
on the back of my neck.

And then I knew something,
something was off.

He was very on guard

and, like, looked like
he was ready to lunge.

I kind of followed Cicero's
eyesight at that point,

and that's when I saw
what he was seeing.

So I'm looking
at this creature,

but I notice its, like, fur
is very patchy,

and then I saw its eyes.

And that's what really
chilled me to the bone

because I could feel its eyes
making contact with me.

Like, it wasn't like,
you know...

If it was a coyote
and it would've saw me,

it would've just run away.

It seemed almost like
it was sizing me up.

I was terrified
out of my mind.

This was not a normal thing.

Never in my life
had I experienced

anything like this,
seen anything like it.

The back legs were longer
than any animal

I'd ever seen before.

It was disgusting.

I felt sick to my stomach.

And I know my dog Cicero
was just as terrified.

I was afraid
that this creature

might kill me.

I realized that I needed
to get away,

and I knew that this thing

was going to be
a lot faster than I was,

so it took everything in me
to just sprint to the door.

I heard a noise inside
of my kitchen,

and I came running out

and it was my sister
standing there.

I definitely thought
it had the potential

to be an intruder.

Michaela, what's going on?

There's
this creature outside.

My sister was just
standing there, pale-faced,

she didn't know what to do
or say at the moment.

So I thought something
seriously bad had happened.

There's this thing outside.

What thing?

At the time I felt
worried for my sister.

Do you remember
the stories from Grandma?

The creature,
it's called a skinwalker.

It's a little bit taboo
to say its name.

It brings misfortune.

It's a Navajo legend,

or at least that's what I was
always raised to believe.

She whispered
that she saw a skinwalker.

I didn't believe her
at first.

I was really worried

that it was actually
somebody trying to hurt us.

It's out there.
We have to lock the windows.

Couldn't possibly
have been a skinwalker.

Go do the dining room
and the hallway.

- I'll go do the rest.
- Okay.

Go.

It looked like
she was in shock.

She was shaken
and pale-faced,

and just overall scared.

Cicero at this point

was in the living room
with us.

He was trying to hide
under the coffee table.

We went to the windows

and just double-checked
and everything.

We turned off all the lights.

And that's when
I saw the silhouette.

The silhouette
of like a humanoid thing.

But it certainly wasn't human.

It looked like,

from what I was seeing
with the long face.

Like it could've been,
like, a snout.

Nobody human would
look like that, honestly.

Like, it didn't make
any sense to me. At all.

But it was at my window.

It was like something out
of a Stephen King book.

It wasn't anything normal
people would experience.

We never even thought
to wake up our dad.

We didn't think
he would believe us.

My heart felt like
it was gonna burst
right out of my chest.

The handle started to turn,

and I realized
that it wasn't locked.

I again was
frozen in fear.

I had to do something
right then and there.

And that's when we quickly
grabbed the handle,

and we locked it
as quick as we could.

And then I heard my grandpa's
voice mimic from it,

and it mimicked my grandpa's
voice almost perfectly,

trying to tell me
that I should let him in

and that I was being
disrespectful, basically,

for not letting him
in the house.

Even though he was all
the way in North Carolina.

Bryon. Open the door.

Bryon,
you must open the door.

Once I heard it,
I was pretty much speechless.

I didn't really know
what to make of it,

and I felt like it was
literally draining me

of all my energy that I had.

Almost as if it was
eating my soul slowly.

Bryon, let me in!

Open the door!

It spoke
to my brother in the voice

of one of the most important
people in his life.

Open the door!

Bryon, open the door!

No. Don't!

I had heard
from my grandparents

that it does need permission

of some sort
before it can enter.

It can't come in
unless you explicitly tell it,

"You're welcome here."

I didn't know what
to do or what to make of it,

but at first...

I've never been
in that situation,

so it honestly scared
the crap out of me.

And then finally,
I would say around sunrise,

it just stopped.

Tell me again.

Dad. It's this creature
from the Navajo legends.

I'm sorry, Michaela.
It sounds silly.

The next morning
and my dad
was making breakfast,

my brother and I
recount the happenings

from the night before,

and we, you know,
let him know

what this creature is
and he's like,

"No, that wasn't what it was.

It's probably
just one of your friends

messing with you."

Honestly, I don't know.

But I was never
so scared in my life.

He definitely laughed
at what we were talking about.

He thought
that it was just a joke

or that we were
messing with him,

or that we just saw something.

He thought it was
completely silly for us

to believe that
we saw a skinwalker.

My dad is definitely
a skeptical person.

He's one of those people
that he has to see it

to believe it, otherwise,

he won't even give it
a second thought.

I called my
grandmother who's Cherokee.

A medicine woman,

so she understands
these things.

No, it was unlike anything
I've ever seen.

Not out in the woods,
not anywhere.

After I told her everything,

she went into the things
I was going to need

to help defend the home
against this creature.

Do you think
it's going to come back?

Yeah, it knows you.

You need juniper ash
to go around the house.

Oh, okay.

And they're dangerous.

You've got to get rid
of this thing.

The idea
of the juniper ash

is to make like a barrier
around the home.

I didn't get off work
until, like, nine o'clock
at night.

So I was a little panicked

because I had no way
of obtaining these,

like, items
at that particular moment.

When I pulled
into the driveway after work,

that's when I started to get
a little nervous again

and my heart started
to pound a little bit.

The idea of going back home

and having to deal with it
again for another night

did make me nervous.

We locked the door.

Maybe it's not going
to come back and bother us.

Maybe we're fine.

Good night.

- Good night.
- Good night.

After my dad went to bed,

about two hours had passed.

It was about 2:30
with nothing going on.

Did you hear that?

We started
to hear the tapping.

It was more determined
and aggressive this time.

And then it was quiet.

The creature's figure
was there in the window again.

It sounded just
like it did the night before,

and then that's when
my brother and I,

we started saying this prayer

that my grandmother
had instructed us to.

I was starting
to get really nervous

because I knew that,
eventually, my dad
would wake up.

I knew that he was
going to open the door,

and that's the one thing
we were supposed to not do,

is open the door
and let it in.

It was something not human.

Something evil was trying
to get into the house.

And that's when it started
to get louder.

It went from tapping
to banging,

and it was pounding
on the door.

When it started pounding,

I definitely
got really scared.

It sounded like this thing

was having
a severe temper tantrum.

Like we were
making it so angry.

It sounded so forceful
and so strong.

Bryon, Michaela.

What is going on?
What is all the noise?

My dad comes running
down the stairs.

I told him not to open
the door and my sister said,

"It's the same thing
from last night."

But my dad didn't believe it.

He thought it was just
our friends messing with us.

Dad, don't!

It's 2:30 in the morning.

And he comes face to face
with this creature.

We're like, "This is it.
Like, we're done for now."

He went from having color
on his face to none at all.

So I have no doubt that
he definitely saw it.

He just stood there,

and his hand was still
on the doorknob,

so there was no space
between him
and this creature.

But instead of attacking
or harming my dad,

it got on all fours
and just ran away.

It went from
angry to scared,

like, in a snap.

"Holy cow, whatever my kids
were talking about was real."

Dad, are you okay?

It's gone.

Go to bed. Go.

And we all went
our separate ways

and went to bed.

I'd collected juniper ash

as my grandma
had instructed me to.

You go north to east,
to south to west,

to back to north
until you know

you just kind of covered
the entire perimeter

of the home.

So that's what I did.

Again, it's a very,
very tedious process,

but you do what you have to,
to, you know,

protect the ones
that you love.

Knowing that my sister had,

you know, burned the sage
through the house

made me feel a lot better.

You know,
because I just thought

that it would be
pretty much over with,

and that no more spirits
would come

because they wouldn't be
even able to get to our door.

What are you doing?

Making sure
it doesn't come back.

Are we not
going to talk about it?

No.

So are we not going
to talk about this thing

that happened last night?

And my dad just said, "No."

He's like, "I don't
know what it was.

I can't explain it,

so it must
not have been real."

And you could see
that my dad

was afraid still.

He was awake
when this happened.

He was perfectly conscious.

He said,
"If I can't explain it,

it's not real.
Nothing happened."

You saw it.
It was there.

I have told my dad
that he needs to admit

that he saw it, you know?

And that he can't explain
what it was

or anything like that,

but he's just, you know,
headstrong

over his denial thing.

I don't think he wants
to admit that he saw it.

It's said
that if you whistle

or, like, hum
or sing certain tunes,

that it allows
these creatures to find you.

And so that's when I realized
that my whistling at it

is what brought it,

at least to where I was.

I moved out September of 2019,
and I moved in
with my fiance.

It never came back.

I usually go visit my dad
and my brother

about once a week

and while I'm there,
I usually try to make sure

that the juniper line
is okay.

I definitely feel
safer inside the house now.

I know that if there's
a knock on the door,

it's got to be somebody
and not just something.

It puts my mind at ease.

I had to get rid of Cicero.

After that night,
he completely changed.

It wasn't a good place
for him anymore.

I don't know what it was
about this creature

that changed him so much,
but he was...

He wasn't my puppy anymore.

I ended up taking him
to our local shelter

and within a few days
of being there,

he was adopted.

It's not anybody's fault
that this happened.

I put a lot of it on me,

but I know that it could've
happened to anybody.

I don't really go
in the woods anymore

because I know
it came from the woods,

and they
just spook me out now.

I said, "Let's go
ghost hunting here

one night."

What's happening?

It turned out to be nothing
like what I expected.

Didn't expect it

I just expected
he and I would have fun

and it was
phenomenally haunted.

It was unbelievable.

I'm Robert Ainsley,
and I live in Austin, Texas.

I believe the spirits
attacked me

and put me in the hospital,
and the doctor said,

"Something
is trying to kill you."

That's when I really,
really got terrified.

I came here in 1975

to go to the
University of Texas,

and then I became
a sergeant

within the Austin Police
Department,

and then later left to go
work for a Fortune 50 company.

With all the stock options,
I was able to retire early.

After that,
I joined as a volunteer

with the
Austin School of Film.

In my spare time,
I would go film out

in the woods,
out on the lake.

Especially at night.

And I came upon
this abandoned lake house

out in the middle
of the woods.

And being a police officer
and interested,

I couldn't resist.
I had to go check it out.

But there were no signs,
there was no fences.

It was standing wide open.
It was abandoned.

And when I went inside,
there was no graffiti.

There was no smell
from animals.

And so it felt to me
as if maybe

it had just been abandoned.

Is there anybody here?

Hello?

Is anybody here?

I just felt drawn to it.

I didn't... I don't know why,
I just felt drawn to it.

I was looking for something
that my son and I could do,

and I knew he liked
those ghost-hunter
type shows.

We had talked
about going ghost hunting

in the past,
but we'd never done it.

And this opportunity
presented itself.

So I texted him and said,
"Hey, what do you think?

You want to go ghost
hunting with me?"

He said, "Yeah. Sure!"

And what I expected was

that he and I would
scare each other,

and we'd just have
a great time.

I didn't expect
there'd actually be
anything in there.

Okay. What have we got here?

- Night vision.
- Yeah.

My son and I didn't
really have any idea

of what we were doing,

so we did
some research on it

and got an idea

of what kind
of equipment we needed.

And so we just grabbed
what we could carry.

We were
just surrounded by woods.

It was terrifying
even though we didn't know

if there was anything there.

We kept straining to hear

if there was
anything in there,

anything for us
to worry about.

At first it was quiet,
even with your footsteps.

The floorboards
didn't even creak.

What was that?

At first,
it was just a knock here,

a knock over there.

And then we were
hearing sounds we had
never heard before.

But we're sure that there was
an explanation for it.

That pipes were shaking

or that the wind
was causing something.

What is that pounding?

And then it started
building into a crescendo

where it was doing
more and more

and more knocking
and pounding.

We kept whispering
to each other,

"What in the world
are we hearing?

What is this going on?"

And as we walked,

we could feel knocks
were underneath our feet

and were following us

as we went around
through the place.

I whispered to my son,

"I think something's
following us."

And having been
a police officer

and been in buildings
in the middle of the night

and hearing all of the
creaking and popping,

and things that can happen
with air conditioning,

and all of that,

I was just convinced
that if we looked hard enough,

that we would find
a natural explanation

for all these things.

Ethan.

Come on.

We went downstairs
into the basement,

and the air
got really oppressive.

And that's where
there was a mirror,

a gigantic mirror
that was behind the bar.

And I had my laser
temperature gun,

immediately the temperature
dropped all the way

below freezing
until the point that
my gun said, "Error,"

"ERR" on it.

And then there was
a resounding pounding

or a knock on the wall.

Then I started having

a bit of a panic attack

that there's something here
that I don't understand

because I just couldn't
find that answer.

I got really scared
and panicky.

And my son was
absolutely terrified.

I wanted to get to the bottom
of what all this was,

because at this point
I still was not convinced

it was paranormal.

I was convinced

that there was some kind
of explanation for it.

My son was convinced
it was paranormal

and he was literally
coming out of his skin.

He was terrified of it.

I'm out of here.
I can't take any more of this.

And so we ran.

We literally
ran up the stairs.

I dropped my son off
by his apartment,

and I kept
all of the equipment.

And I went back home
and actually

put everything up in my desk
and got distracted.

I had waited,

I believe it was
several weeks,

before I actually looked
at the footage.

Because understand
at this point,

I'm still not convinced

that anything paranormal
was involved.

I was very, very skeptical.

I loaded all of the footage
into my computer

and was shocked.

I heard a growl,

but there was something wrong
with the growl.

It didn't sound like
any animal

that I was familiar with.

I sat back and just stared
at my computer monitor

for a long time.

From that point on, my son
said he is not going back.

He just doesn't feel safe.

He doesn't know
what's in there.

I had a complicated
push/pull of emotions

where the adrenaline

was pulling me
towards the place

and something
was calling me,

but then the other half of me

was starting
to become terrified

that there perhaps
is something here

that I don't understand,

and I'm not prepared
to deal with.

As a police officer,
the only way to do it

is to keep collecting more
and more and more

of my own
personal experiences.

While I was there that night,
I had another camera

that was inside the camera bag
that I slung over my shoulder.

They pulled the camera
out of the bag

and flung it across the room,
and it crashed on the floor.

And so I went over
and picked up the camera,

put it in my bag and left.

And I would have dreams
about this house.

And I would wake up
the next day and say,

"I've got to go back
to that house."

I think the house was
trying to beckon me back.

I went in one night.

All this time, I'd been
filming the mirror.

The minute I would
start filming,

with any of my cameras,
it would begin to fog over.

And different things
would start to come and go.

In the top right
is this creature

with its two big black eyes.

It was absolutely
frightening.

I took one shot,

and there's like
a demonic figure.

A demon or something
sitting on my hand,

as I'm filming this mirror.

I got home around 3:00 a.m.

and just was exhausted
from the experience.

I felt completely drained.

And I just put the evidence up
in my desk and went to sleep.

The next day,
I just still felt really off.

So I just rested.

By Wednesday,
I was running a fever

and a sore throat
and felt like I had the flu.

But then it got
really serious, really fast.

I woke up Sunday morning
in intensive care,

and I had IV bags
in both arms.

And I had e coli infection
in my liver,

in my bladder, in my kidneys,
in my urinary tract.

I had pneumonia
in my left lung,

and I had an abscess
growing in my brain.

And the doctor said,

"Something is trying
to kill you."

But I believe the spirits
attacked me

and put me in the hospital.

That's when I start
to get really scared

and panicky inside.

I wasn't sure
I was going to come out of it,

but I did,
and they released me,

and I was really exhausted
once I got back home.

And I just focused
on recovering
and didn't do anything.

Then about two weeks later,

I finally felt good enough

to look at the evidence
from the lake house,

and that's where I found

multiple electronic
voice phenomena, EVPs, saying,

"Hospital. I'm going
to put you in the hospital."

That's when I really,
really got terrified.

There's no explanation
other than I was attacked

and put in a hospital
by these spirits.

I was really distraught,

and that's when the owners

put a construction
fence around it,

put up cameras and said,
"No. You can't go back."

Before I went to the house,

I didn't really
have much thought

about the next life,
the next world,

and this house made me
absolutely positive and sure

that the spirit world is real.

It changed my life.
