out of the woods.

What's happening?

This entity crawled
out of the storage area,

just your worst nightmare.

It felt like a battle
between good and evil.

She became a person
I didn't recognize.

I felt like I was
really losing my mind.

Whatever shred of me
was still left.

It was trying to kill me.

Leave us alone!

My name
is Roy Stubblefield.

I was born and raised
in Omaha, Nebraska.

When I was younger,
I really enjoyed fishing.

I still do today.

Just a way to go out
and relieve some stress,

figure out some
of your life's problems.

When I walked in the woods,

it was always with a sense
of peace and wonderment.

Wondering what I would see,
you know,

would I see deer today?
Will I see a coyote?

Will I see a skunk?

I carried a gun,

I had a .357 Magnum
at that time.

I'd rather have it
and not need it

than don't have it
and need it.

Not looking for trouble,
but I'm not trying

to run from trouble either.

I'm just out here,
I'm not bothering anybody,

so just leave me alone.

When I moved to New Orleans,
I was 19, almost 20.

I had got a job
in a store called Chess King.

Quite a few women
came in there,

wink, wink and, you know,

all my days
weren't spent talking

to a bunch of guys.

It hadn't been
a really busy day,

just steady.

And a young lady
walked in the store.

I'm not going to lie to you,

she's looking
kind of good over there,

I think I'mma go over there

and see if I can strike up
a conversation with her.

Hey.

Hey.

You know, you look real good
and Friday night,

I want to take you out,
alright?

Really?

Yeah.

What's your number?

Something should've told me
something was wrong.

Alright.

What's your address?

My mother
won't let boys come by.

Now, in 1981,
that wasn't unheard of.

I kind of thought
it was weird.

But I didn't put
a lot of stock into it.

So I'm like, "Okay, well,
where are going to meet at?"

There's a place.

A couple of blocks
from my house.

Prospect Park.

I can do that. What time?

Seven o'clock.

See you there.

I'd never been to
Metairie, Louisiana, before.

I had no idea
where this park was at.

But I know how to read a map,
so I'm like, "I'll find it."

It was 22 miles

from New Orleans
to Metairie, Louisiana,

to the park I was supposed
to meet my date in.

I got to meet her at 7:00.

Now, when I got to the park,

it was about 6:52,
no later than 6:56.

I hadn't been there
five minutes and this
guy walked up to me.

You want to play some ball?

No, thanks.
I'm waiting for someone.

Alright.

He introduced himself,

and he told me
his name was Herman.

So, 7:00 come and go,
7:15 come and go.

7:30 come and go.

And I start getting
that feeling.

I done drove
all the way up here

from New Orleans
just to get stood up.

I'm sitting there, starting
to get a little irritated,

feeling stupid.

7:45 come and go.

8:00 comes, I'm like "Okay,

she's not going to show
for whatever reason.

I'm ready to go find me
something else to do."

So Herman asked me
again, he said, "Man,
you gonna leave?

I thought you was waiting
on somebody to show up."

"Well, it don't look like
she's going to show up, man."

"Why don't you just stay
and play basketball with us?"

- Hey, what's up.
- How you been?

- Good, man. How're you?
- Good.

How long have you been
here for?

- Just a couple of hours.
- Good, let's sweat.

Hey, come join us.

Come play the game with us,
man.

Alright.

And I played basketball
with these guys

for the next four hours.

On Fridays and Saturdays,

the lights stayed on
in the park until midnight.

And midnight sharp,
they just shut off,

and it's pretty dark
in the park.

I wanted a beer.

- I'm done.
- Wait. I'm done too.

Hey, do you guys know where
the closest liquor store is?

You got a liquor store
down that way, right?

- Yeah, it's that way.
- We're going that way anyways.
Do you want to come with us?

Yeah, let's go. Let's go.

We exit the park,
and we walk onto the street,

and then we walk
down from the park

and we get
on the railroad tracks.

As soon as you get
about a mile in,

it's heavily wooded.

You got to be, like, five feet
or less from somebody

to actually be able
to see them clearly.

It just was kind of weird,
the environment was weird.

I'm like, "What is
that sound I'm hearing?"

I felt like I was in danger.

I seen something move out
of my peripheral view.

I didn't get
a clear look at it,

but I seen something move.

My brain is telling me,
"Get the hell outta here."

And then...

Run!

We took off running.

And Herman is like
a couple of steps behind.

And then, you know
what it sounds like

when somebody
hit gravel and slide?

That's what I heard.

And then, I heard this...

I've never heard
a human being

make a sound
like that before,

or get a feeling
like I got when I heard him.

I was terrified.

I turned around,
and as I was turning around,

I bent down and I picked up
two handfuls of rocks.

Herman is laying on his back.

He's not screaming,
he's not struggling.

It's like he's frozen.

And what I see over the top
of him is what has to be

either the biggest dog
on the planet, or...

I can't even finish that,

'cause I don't know
what exactly it was.

All I could see
was like a silhouette,

and Herman is not moving.

And it's not growling,

it's not snarling.

It's just looking him
dead in his eyes.

That's not a dog.

What the is that?

That's what went
through my mind.

That's when terror
kicked in,

because now I can clearly see
what I'm looking at.

Shoulders, arms,

everything on top like
a human female would have,

just a whole lot bigger.

I'm like, "This thing
gotta be... It gotta be
nine feet tall."

And to see a hand
come out of the dark

when you're expecting a paw.

I mean, a hand four times
bigger than mine.

A light went on and I said,
"That's a werewolf.

I'm looking
at a werewolf."

My brain is telling me,
"Get the hell out of here,

it's time for you to go."

My whole body
is just locked up.

And I don't know what
this thing's next move
is gonna be.

I don't know if it's
about to kill everybody.

Now, one of the guys I was
with had a fanny pack on.

He pulled out a .38.

It stopped looking at me,
and it looked at that dude.

She laid her ears back

and that's when she
raised her jowls up,

and that's when I got
to see her teeth.

She growled. I've never heard
a sound like that again since.

I could feel it in my chest.
I was terrified.

One of the guys shot at her,
and then it took off running.

I ran, and I got home
as fast as I could.

As soon as I got
back to my place,

I'm at a high state
of paranoia.

I took my three speed
loaders down and I
fully loaded them,

and set them on the table.
My hand was shaking so bad

I would've put bullets
all around the doorframe,

but I would've never been able
to hit the door.

That's how bad
my hand was shaking.

Later on, I was able
to fall to sleep.

In my dream,
I would be finding myself

transported
back to the train tracks,

Or I would find myself
running down the tracks

- with her directly behind me.

Sometimes I'd shoot her
and she'd fall down

like she was dead,
and I walk up on her,

planning on putting
another one in her ear,

- and she'd pop up.

It was a mauling.
I mean, arms being torn off.

Being held by your neck
and shook like a ragdoll.

I had to deal with nightmares
almost on a nightly basis.

Just gruesome,
horrible dreams.

Enough to make you
wake up screaming.

The terror. I didn't want
to see that thing again
or anything like it.

I didn't leave that house
again until Tuesday.

My boss must pay
real close attention to me.

'Cause I hadn't been in there
30 minutes when she's like...

Are you okay, Roy?

And I looked at her and said,
"No, I'm not."

What's the matter?
Tell me.

- You wouldn't believe it.
- Something's not right.

So, the other night,
me and these guys were
playing basketball, right?

And when I got done,
she's like...

"Oh, you've seen
a loup garou."

And she started telling me
what a loup garou was.

In Louisiana,
a loup garou is a werewolf.

Werewolves are supposed
to be people

that shapeshift
from a human form

into that monstrosity.

And if they bite you,

they're supposed
to curse you,

and, until you locate
them and kill them,

then you're going to be one
for the rest of your life.

All I know is
I've seen a werewolf

that was a female.

And yet, I was supposed
to go on a date

with a female that night.

So, that's where my mind
is starting to go.

That was that chick

that she came
in that store

and picked out her
Friday night meal.

That's what I was
supposed to be.

Monsters do exist.

These are not fairytales
that your parents tell you.

They actually do exist.

They're not something
that you see

in pages of books.

They walk on Earth
the same as we do.

This has changed my life,

this event has cost me
relationships.

I needed to talk to somebody,
so I called my brother.

He said,

"You got to learn to put that
in a box and put it away."

It wasn't an easy process,

because when every time
you close your eyes,

the first thing you see
is that creature,

or the look on Herman's face.

And sometimes I would see it
while my eyes are wide open.

Now that I know
what else is out there

in them woods besides us,

I tend to shy away
from them.

God's the only one gonna
be able to give the answers
I need about that night.

But, you know, that's
the devil's world right there.

Something had followed us

out of the woods.

What's happening?

My name is Melissa Kendy.

Jason Kendy is my husband.

I met Jason
in the summer of 2013.

We actually bonded over
our common interest

of hiking and outdoors.

I love the outdoors,
I love camping,

fishing, hiking.

Just being stranded
in the wilderness.

I love the nature.

We stayed
right on the lake

in Big Bear Lake.

It's a very
beautiful place.

Very scenic.
Just breathtaking.

Loved everything about it.

Jason wanted
to kind of get away

from the fast pace life
in the city.

And so, we put
our old house up for sale.

Started a new life
up in the mountains.

We moved in the last day
of fall in 2013.

The surroundings of the home
were very rural.

It was right off
into the national forest.

You could walk out 50 feet

and be
in national forest land.

I think I've got
the key here somewhere.

Ready?

I know just the spot for you.

I remember moving in

and just having
a weird feeling.

The house just seemed
a lot darker

than I had remembered.

Upstairs,
it had a loft in our bedroom.

And I could pick up on
a very sad energy.

A very depressed energy,
despair.

Especially
in the upstairs bedroom.

We had found out that,
unfortunately,

the woman who owned it
before us

was hit by a drunk driver.

I got a job for you.

Okay.

Our bedroom had a door

right next
to my side of the bed.

And it just,

it kind of creeped me out
a little bit.

I remember looking out
in the surroundings

and just thinking,

"Wow, like, this is going
to be a big adjustment.

I hope my dreams come true."

It was
a small neighborhood

with only a handful
of neighbors.

They were pretty rough,

not too friendly.

These mountain people
are rough.

Morning.

They were not friendly.

They were very paranoid.

We didn't fit in.

I felt completely
like a fish out of water.

That we weren't one of them.

That kind of just made me
feel a bit more isolated,

in the middle of the forest.

One morning,

my husband suggested
getting some fresh air.

We decided to take
one of the trails

that go deeper
into the woods.

Come on, hun.

I couldn't wait
to explore the woods.

At first, it was great,
you know.

We were hiking along,
and it was peaceful.

- It's beautiful.
- Yeah.

But then, as we got
further into the forest,

the feelings
kind of changed.

I started feeling watched.

My hair stood up.

We both kind of felt
a negative presence.

Just a creeped-out feeling,
kind of like eyes are on you.

The woods
went completely quiet.

Do you hear anything?

No.

You weren't
sure if it was your mind
playing tricks on you.

We realized that we
had come to a clearing.

And we immediately got
a really negative feeling.

Just, the energy right there
was really bad.

And then, we stumbled
upon something really bad.

What's that?

A pentagram.

I knew instantly
what it was,

and I knew it wasn't good.

It's satanic.

Hail Satan!

And all the demons of the pit!

When I saw the pentagram,

I remembered
my sister telling me

about a legend of the town.

A satanic cult
called Goat men.

Her boyfriend
had grown up in the town,

and he had actually witnessed
them doing satanic rituals.

He'd seen stuff,

but never partook
in the activities.

All he said was,

he warned us and told us
about that,

that it was pretty creepy.

I kind of wrote it off
as just local legend.

Hail Satan.

But after seeing
the pentagram,

I kind of wondered
if maybe there was

some truth to that.

Somebody up there

was dabbling in some...
some dark stuff.

So, they were
just a bad group of people.

I knew that you just don't
mess with that kind of stuff.

I knew it was serious.

It looked pretty laid out,

like these people
knew what they were doing.

I definitely felt
some kind of evil presence.

My husband wanted
to mark the trail.

So we knew
which direction to head back.

Don touch!
You shouldn't've touched that.

Why did you touch it?

I put it back.

It was too late
for me to say anything.

I just had a feeling
that something really bad
was gonna happen.

Melissa was shooken up
about it.

I got this feeling,
like ringing in my ears.

I felt an overwhelming sense
of dread and terror.

Let's get out of here.
Come on.

We were on the trail

for maybe 30, 40 minutes.

And then we realized

that we were not
on the original trail anymore.

Is this right?

We're lost, aren't we?

Yeah, I think so.

What the hell was that?

It just happened
in a split second.

One moment
we were on the trail,

and then suddenly, we weren't.

We were lost,
trying to find ourselves back.

I never get lost
in the woods.

Panic kind of set in for me,

we were totally lost.

Just bushwhacking
around in the forest.

- Oh, God.
- What?

Look. We're going in circles.

Melissa was freaking
about getting close to dark.

I was
just in full panic mode,

thinking that we
were going to have to sleep

in the woods.
I was wondering,

"Are these people
who set up this ritual

going to come back?"

We both felt
someone was watching us.

We felt like not alone there.

We just felt
like almost like prey.

The presence
that I felt was not human.

And it was evil.

I was fully panicking,

after being lost
for a good hour.

It was terrifying.

I never felt that way
going into the woods, ever.

Where are we going?

Gotta keep moving.

I really thought that we

were going to end up
as missing people.

I was getting hysterical,
I was crying.

And Jason was trying
to seem like

we were going to be okay,
but I could tell that he
was scared too.

There!

What?

Lights.

Melissa was very
happy that we found a trail.

Finally,
we saw the cabin.

It was
a huge sense of relief.

I just felt like...

"Oh, thank God."

When we got home,
I had this odd feeling

that something
had followed us back

out of the woods.

I definitely felt
some kind of evil presence.

Something was causing me
to feel dreadful

and terrified.

Electrical occurrences
started happening.

We just felt
this electricity in the air.

Where you'd feel a presence,
your hair would stand up.

And you
could actually hear

the button clicking.

It was very creepy.

It was
really strange activity

that we never witnessed
before.

What's happening?

I don't know.

What's going on?

It will pass.

And then boom,
just full blast.

The lights, the fans, the TV.

Look the TV!

Everything full blast,
turned up.

I got so frustrated
at one point

that I just screamed...

Stop it! Leave us alone!

My mood
slowly started to change,

my personality
started to change.

Like, my thoughts
were not my own.

Over the next
few days and weeks,

she did out-of-character stuff

that she generally
wouldn't do.

I started
to become really angry,

lashing out at my husband,
starting fights.

What are you doing?

You're getting mud everywhere.

Just get out and take it off!

Fighting was completely new
to our relationship.

She became a person
I didn't recognize.

I've never seen her
act like this.

She was
just totally different.

One afternoon
I had gone up

into our room
to lay down and take a nap.

I started getting nightmares.

Just really violent images.

And suddenly,
I could see myself,

looking at myself

as if I was
in the corner of the room.

And I'm watching myself.

At that point, the door
right next to the bed

kind of popped open
a few inches.

And I see a black hand
with, like, long fingers

kind of come
around the edge of the door.

This entity crawled out
of the storage area.

My heart, I could hear it
beating in my ears.

Like a drum.

It seemed
like almost slow motion.

Just,
"Am I really seeing this?

Is this really happening?"

Just, your worst nightmare.

There's this black mass
on the ground, crawling.

It makes its way over
to the edge of my bed,

and it's crouched down.

And I see it
rise up over my body,

it's looking at me.

Pure black.

You could see bones underneath
this weird tight, black skin.

It had red eyes and it had
these big, giant horns.

This overwhelming evil,

that's when I knew

that that's
what had been oppressing me.

And it starts exhaling

like what looked
like smoke down around me.

I'm just watching this
in complete terror.

I was inhaling it,
becoming part of it.

I felt like
I was really losing my mind.

This was all kind
of what this entity wanted,

it wanted to push me so far,
to hurt my family.

She felt there's
a presence inside her.

I did have
a collection of guns

for home protection.

Whatever I sensed
was attached to me

was much too powerful
for me to,

kind of, fend off on my own.

It was able to grow,

the more I kind
of tumbled downward.

She felt possessed.

She felt
something got a hold of her.

Something
was just changing her.

I was afraid that
whatever was manipulating me

would overpower me.

Whatever shred of me
was still left.

The more despair I felt,
the more it was able to grow.

The more out of control
I became,

the more powerful it became.

It wasn't my own thoughts

or my own mind
controlling me anymore.

I was fully
in some kind of trance.

It was a complete
180 personality change.

Now, our forest just felt
overwhelmingly negative.

And I absolutely hated it.

I felt like we had lost
money moving up there,

buying a house.

There was just no way out,
you know?

We would never be able
to go back,

we would lose everything
and be completely broke.

I would pray to God,
you know, "Please, help me."

I was out of control,
out of my own control.

I think something
had just took over her.

Jason said that I looked
completely demonic,

that my face was twisted,
sunken in, hollow.

My eyes were black.

She just looked evil.

She just looked like a...

kind of like a monster,
really.

I just bolted
for the woods.

Melissa!

She took off
in the woods barefoot.

Melissa!

And she'd just be gone.

Something just
always pulled me out there.

I just disappeared
into the dark.

Something wanted me
out there.

It was trying to kill me.

Melissa!

I had no idea what
I was doing in the woods,

but it led
to the pentagram area.

That's the direction
that I would run to.

I don't have
any recollection of...

beyond that.

Melissa!

Melissa!

I felt very worried,
I felt scared for her.

Because I just feared she was
lost somewhere in the woods.

I thought the worst,
just super worried

and scared and nervous.
Didn't know whether...

Didn't know really what to do.

Jason told me
I was gone for four hours.

And I came home barefoot
and scratched up.

She was in a dark,
dark space.

You okay?

He was like,
"Why would you do that?"

I wanted to break off
the relationship.

I just thought, "This is it."

Then, one night,

I got a phone call
from my friend

that lived in my hometown,
down the mountain.

You never come visit.

Why don't you come over soon?

I can't.

I can't come up there.

What do you mean?

It's bad land.

She said, "I absolutely
will not go up there."

And it kind
of caught me off guard.

I was like, "Well, why not?"

And she was like,
"That land is bad, Melissa.

There's something bad
up there."

She had explained
that there's evil entities,

particularly in the woods.

Her friend
told her a story

about her friend
that lived up on Big Bear.

She saw something,

packed up and moved that night
and never came back.

She said, "You
absolutely need to get out."

When my friend
confirmed what I had felt,

I almost felt relief,
just because I felt like,

"Okay, I'm not crazy,
this isn't really me."

There's something
from the land up here

that has somehow
attached to me,

and I think that the more
negative feelings I had,

it just grew from that,

from my negative emotions.

It was just draining my soul.

And that it could hurt me,

and that it would kill me
if I stayed.

Then I decided
to hire a medium

to really get rid
of this attachment.

And so,
she did a full cleansing

and it was deeply attached
to me.

In the name of Jesus,
I command thee.

Leave this woman.

In the name of Jesus,
leave this woman.

You are not wanted here.

- Thou loathsome spawn of hell!

She said that,
when it came to her,

when she saw it,
it frankly terrified her.

She'd never seen
anything like that before.

She had removed it,
but that it could come back.

I spoke with Jason
about it the next day.

She decided that we
should move off the mountain.

I agreed. I knew
if we did not leave,

she was going to end up dead.

Are you alright?

I just threw
my stuff in my car.

I had to get away.

I felt relieved leaving.

To keep her safe and...

It was just
the right thing to do.

His dream of living out
the rest of his life as
an outdoors man

in a cabin in the woods
with his wife

just was completely shattered.

Yeah, it was my dream
to live in the woods,

but it was an American dream
that turned into a nightmare.

I just remember feeling

this feeling of darkness
kind of lift.

I was just completely done.

I never looked back.

I never believed
in this stuff before,

and now it has totally changed
my opinion.

I don't want to go back
to those woods,

because we don't want to
experience that ever again.

I do know
that these things exist.

I believe there's
far more out there

than we could even imagine.
