hasn't been very good.

racial problems, terrorism,

governments running
out of money,

kids committing crimes.

This is what fills the pages
of our papers.

This is what we hear
on the radio.

This is what we see on the TV.

I know that many of you
find this news

as upsetting as I do.

I hear it
in our phone conversations.

I... I read it

in your letters
and your e-mails.

Let's face it: there's a...

a general feeling of pessimism
in our congregation

and it's spreading, and we need
to do something about it.

Now, the way I see it,

we all have talents,

talents that can be used
to make a better church,

a better community,
a better world,

and what I propose we all do

is that we take our special
talent, whatever that may be,

and, and reach out
to someone in need.

that could mean
anything,

from simply praying
for someone

to, uh, to joining
a volunteer organization

to starting your own group

to, to do some project
that would benefit others.

Maybe you're
a, a plumber

or an electrician
or a carpenter.

Can you afford to give
the church one Saturday a month

to help with repairs?

Well, that's
what I'm talking about.

Maybe you're
a stay-at-home mother

who can help a mother
working outside the home

by including her children
for... one meal

one night a week.

You can ask Annie how it's done.

We do it almost every meal
at our house.

Or maybe you're a, a student
who can tutor younger students.

I mean,

you see what
I'm getting at?

We can all do

something.

Even if it's just
to pray for someone

who you know needs
some extra prayers.

take that piece of paper

that's just been handed

one good thing that you will do
for someone other than yourself

in the coming year.

to fill our collection plate
with commitments, not cash.
