a former federal agent.

My grandfather worked at a
highly classified Air Force base

and convinced me we are not
alone in the universe.

Then I had my own encounter
that changed my life forever.

to a top secret archive

from Project Blue Book...

This planet has been under
surveillance for centuries.

HANSEN: ...containing reports
of over 10,000 UFO sightings

We could very well be standing
on the exact place

where a UFO crashed.

to uncover the truth.

I'm in Kissimmee, Florida,
on my way to meet with a woman

who claims
that she had an encounter

with an alien life-form.

She was truly terrified.

She says this thing
was in her backyard.

J. Allen Hynek defined
this as

"a close encounter
of the third kind."

NARRATOR:
In order to classify sightings,

Project Blue Book
investigator Dr. Hynek

developed
an identification scale.

Simply getting close
to an unidentified object

is a close encounter
of the first kind.

If the unidentified object
left physical evidence,

such as scorched earth
or impressions on the ground,

it is a close encounter
of the second kind.

The top of the scale is an
encounter with an actual entity,

known as a close encounter
of the third kind.

One woman claims to have
recently experienced

this type of rare encounter
in southern Florida.

with Trish Bishop.

She agreed to meet me
in the backyard

where she said
her encounter happened.

So you lived over in this house,
in this direction over here?

BISHOP: That's correct.

How long did you
live there for?

Since February of 2013
to July of 2019.

And this event
happened when?

February 28th of 2013.

So take me back to what was
the first thing that you noticed

that was unusual about your
property -- what was going on?

It was a Thursday afternoon,
and I get home from work,

and I go out on the back porch
just to relax.

I had seen what appeared
to be this wavy thing.

It was above the trees.

[ Owl hooting ]
It was about
10 to 12 feet in length.

[ Leaves rustling ]
And it just sounded like
something was walking over there

by the edge of the woods.

Something large?
Yeah.

And I'm sitting there,
and I'm like,

"What in the world is
that?"

I'm not thinking alien. I'm
not thinking any
of that.

That's not going
through my head.

And all of a sudden,
I can see him.

This thing was a human body,
6'2"-6'3",

very, very well-built
military-type body.

But he had a creature's head,
and he had these massive,

very pronounced jawbones.

When I saw his eyes, I thought,
"He can't --

That can't possibly be his eyes
'cause he can't
close them."

There was no way
to close them.

And I thought, "If he knows
I can see him,

he's gonna kill me."

NARRATOR:
Because of the look, stature,
and height of the alien being,

Trish felt threatened
immediately.

She created a digital sketch
of what she saw.

I created something
off the Internet.

Oh, my gosh!
And this is really
close.

Trish, this would
be terrifying.

[ Creature chitters ]

And I'm like,
"He's gonna kill me."

So I thought if I pretend

that I don't see him,
then I might be safe.

So I just kept playing
with my phone, you know,

and he just stared at me,

and then he turned around, and
he looked into the woods again.

And turned back around,
he took a couple more steps.

All I kept thinking was,

"If I dial 911
and the police show up

and they see all those cops
and everything coming here,

he's gonna annihilate us."

So he takes about 5 or 6,
7 steps forward

towards that wavy thing.

When he enters that
wavy thing,

everything disappears.

So what I did was I sat there
for a couple minutes.

After a couple of minutes,
I got up,

I wanted to see
if I could see that UFO.

Couldn't see it.
I couldn't see it anywhere.

Did you tell anybody about
this after the event?

No. I didn't tell anybody
for four years.

I work with
government contractors.

I have a clearance.

It's not something that you
just go out and
tell people,

"Oh, I saw an alien."

I could possibly lose
my job.

Though Trish stayed silent
for years,

she never forgot the encounter
in her backyard.

Eventually, she came across
the Mutual UFO Network,

or M.U.F.O.N., online.

Their specialty --
deciphering UFO sightings.

So, it also had a link
to report.
Uh-huh.

And I thought,

"I'm gonna tell."
I know what I saw.

I don't have to justify
anything to anybody.

I got an e-mail back from
John Gagnon with M.U.F.O.N.,

and he started talking to
me, and he came
out here.

We did a walk through the woods
and everything.

I showed him
where I saw the alien.

So he walked around with me
and everything, and he said,

"Why don't you get
a hunting tracker?"

And I did.
I bought one.

Trish installed
a hunting tracker,

a motion-triggered camera
used to track game,

in her backyard aimed
at where she had seen the alien.

A few weeks later,
it captured something shocking.

I did get a really good
photo of a UFO.

Really?
And I can show you
a picture of that

if you want.
I would love
to see that, please.

Trish's trail cam
was triggered to take this photo

after detecting rapid motion.

The UFO appears to be
streaking away

at a near-perfect
vertical ascent.

Photo analysis conducted
by M.U.F.O.N. concluded

that this object was
27 feet wide

and 12 to 13 feet long with
no visible means of propulsion.

Other UFOs sighted in American
airspace have behaved similarly,

namely the "Tic-Tac" craft
that was filmed

by U.S. Navy pilots in 2004.

speaking indistinctly ]

The Tic-Tac was reported
to hover in space

almost unnaturally
before taking off

in whatever direction it pleased
at near-supersonic speeds.

What part of the sky
did you take this with?

I mean,
where was your trail cam

pointed in relation
to the sky here?

This trail cam
was on the crapemyrtle tree

where I saw the alien,

and it was pointed west towards
Kennedy Space Center.

Well, Trish, you've given me
a lot of great information.

I can tell this was
a very impactful event for you,

and I appreciate
you taking me back.

Trish's story is incredible.

Could Trish have
witnessed a UFO and its pilot?

Ben believes
it's possible she experienced

a genuine close encounter
of the third kind.

But what was
this creature's purpose?

Have there been other sightings
like Trish's

that have caused witnesses
to feel threatened?

To find out,
Ben decides to research

the historic archives
of Project Blue Book,

to lend his expertise.

So I've been
down in Florida

looking into this case
of Trish Bishop.

Now, Trish claims that
in her own backyard,

she had a very terrifying
encounter, okay,

I guess what we'd call
a close encounter
of the third kind.

There was this craft
that came down in a wooded area.

And as she watched
from the corner of her house,

she saw this
massive figure.

At first, she thought
it was a human,

except that as she kept
watching this thing,

she quickly realized
that the eyes,

the mouth and jawline,

and everything
was definitely not human.

In fact,
it's quite terrifying.

She kind of took
some photo editing

and created the best version
of what she believes she saw.

So Trish is like,
"What just happened here?

Is there something
that is visiting

or living in the woods?"

And I'm wondering
if there are any other stories

in the Blue Book era
where people have been

so impacted by a close encounter
of a craft and occupants,

maybe even in their own
backyard.

There is a case that
fits the bill.

What you're talking about
took place in 1955.

It involved a farm family

that was besieged
by strange creatures.

It was a terrifying
incident,

but it wasn't just
terrifying --

it actually became
quite violent.

[ Exhales sharply ]
Wow.

Coming up, Ben learns

of one of the most horrifying
encounters

in UFO history.

"There's one in the big tree!"

a potential close encounter

encounters have happened before.

In 1955, the Sutton family
of Hopkinsville, Kentucky,

reported a close encounter

unlike anything
Ben has ever heard of before.

They claim that late one
summer night,

their friend Billy Ray witnessed
a UFO land on the property

before numerous aliens emerged
from the woods

and attacked their farmhouse.

The Suttons responded
by engaging in a fire-fight

with the creatures.

Man: Hurry up!
O'CONNELL: This family,

after four hours of fighting off
these creatures,

they all pile into their trucks
and speed into town

to go to the police.

These are people who
take care of themselves,

these are people
who reach for their gun

when there's trouble.
Right.

They don't go to
the police.
Right.

So imagine you are
the desk sergeant

at the police department
that night.

11 o'clock at night,

two pickups come racing
into the parking lot,

skidding to a stop.

11 people go inside
and report that a UFO,

a flying saucer,
has landed behind their house

and that they've been attacked
by little creatures.

16 law enforcement officers,
the local police,

the county sheriff,
the state police,

they all send people to the
farm to see what
they can find,

and they find lots of
evidence

that the shootout
really happened.

There are holes in
the screens,

there's shot embedded
in the window frames,

there are shell casings
scattered all over
the ground,

and one more piece of
evidence

was that there was a
bald spot

in the grass in the gully
behind the farmhouse.

[ Sizzling ]

So this is where Billy Ray had
first seen the
object float

down from the sky
and land on the ground.

There was a bald patch there
that nobody ever investigated.

Well, that's something
to follow up on, definitely.

Anything that
could possibly be still there

as far as
physical evidence,

'cause it sounds like military,
the law enforcement,

botched it.

It just raised too many
tough questions --

questions they just didn't
want to deal with.

But you're telling me
the police took it seriously?

They came there, yet they didn't
really do an investigation.

The military shows up.
What did the military conclude?

Was the Air Force or Blue Book
then involved after this?

The Air Force's involvement
in this case

is totally
schizophrenic.

They were all over
this case,

but publicly,
they had no interest.

Wow.

In addition, and this is
what the Air Force

doesn't want you to remember --
in addition,

there were four military
policemen from Fort Campbell,

which is
about 20 miles away.

They were there
almost instantly.

There were also two men,
two agents

from a government agency
that was never named,

but they were wearing
civilian clothes.

But these two men showed up the
day after the
the sighting

and started asking
a lot of questions.

Nobody knows
who they were.

Nobody knows who they
represented

or who they worked for,

but they were on the scene
asking questions.

So it's just one more layer
of government involvement

that they were desperately
trying to cover up.

Well, once again, we might have
a possible connection

with a military base
nearby, right?

I don't know what they're doing
at Fort Campbell at the time,

but Trish Bishop in Florida

has a view of some
of the rocket launches,

the shuttle launches and things
that happen at Cape Canaveral.

It's something to look at that
perhaps there's a connection

to the activity
happening at Fort Campbell.

Is there any way
that I could talk to anyone

who might be related
to the family still?

I think you can talk
with Geraldine Sutton.

She's the daughter
of Lucky Sutton,

who was kind of
the main witness

in the alien invasion
case.

She wasn't alive
at the time it happened,

but she's heard the stories
from her family

about that incident.

I think you could learn
a lot from her.

and especially because this is
such a fantastical story.

What was attracting
these aliens

to the private property
of American citizens?

And why are they displaying
aggressive behavior?

The Sutton family encountered
something quite freakish.

The description of these
creatures is so strange,

but in a way, it's similar
to what Trish reported.

Definitely not human.

The craft landed somewhere near
the property in the backyard.

And then you also have
the fact

that a similar tic-tac shaped
UFO was seen 11 miles away.

Now, I don't know
if that has anything to do

with a pattern that might emerge
as being relevant,

but I'm here to find out.

Past that house right there,
it was just field and trees.

So, Geraldine,
tell me about that night.

It was 1955.

Who was there at this
farmhouse, and what happened?

Geraldine was not yet born
when the encounter took place,

but her father recounted
the story in detail many times.

I call this the Great American
Horror Story for a reason,

because it was total terror,
chaos, and horror that night.

My dad and his wife at the time,
Vera, and their friends,

Billy Ray and June Taylor,

they worked
with the traveling carnival.

They were stationed, like,
two hours away in Evansville.

They were so close,
they decided to come in.

"Let's go home.
Let's see Mom."

It was a Sunday evening,

so my grandmother had
gotten back from church.

Sun was going down.

Billy Ray decided to go out
to the well.

As he was going out,
he heard something,

looked up toward the sky, and
saw something going across it --

round,
oval in shape, silver.

According
to Geraldine's father,

Billy Ray found himself
face-to-face with a UFO.

He bolted back to the house

and told the others
what he had just seen.

So my dad says, "Billy Ray,
let's go to the well.

You show me where you saw
this at."

Billy Ray and
Geraldine's father, Lucky,

return to the well.

There, they saw something
beyond their wildest imaginings.

Lo and behold,
from the back of the woods

comes this little three, three
and a half foot tall being,

arms almost touching
the ground.

Though the alien beings

were not as imposing
as the alien Trish saw,

Geraldine's father
and brother felt threatened.

So here, you got two grown men
running into the house,

screaming,
"There is something out here!"

[ Child screaming ]

Well, my dad told
my grandmother,

"Mom, there's something
out here. We saw it."

Well, she knew
it was really getting serious

when one grabbed a rifle,
one grabbed shotgun,

one went to the front door,
and one went to the back.

All of a sudden...

[ Clattering ]

...you can hear their nails
going across the tin roof.

[ Scraping ]

The Suttons have heard
enough.

They believed they were under
a full-scale attack.

It was time to shoot first
and ask questions later.

Somebody screams,
"There's one in the big tree!"

He turns, shoots it.

You know, they keep coming up to
the windows and the doors.

[ Creature growling ]

The Suttons continue to
open fire

on their extraterrestrial
attackers.

They split up their offensive...

...with Billy Ray taking
the fight to the creatures.

But once outside,
he was exposed.

kind in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

In 1955, Lucky Sutton and his
family, 12 people in all,

came face-to-face with what they
believed were hostile aliens.

Geraldine Sutton was not

but will never forget
her father's harrowing story,

the moment when the beings
reached their house

clawing to get in...

Well, you've got the girls
crying, everybody's hysterical.

They don't know what
these things are.

So, my dad's trying
to calm everybody down.

He tells them,
"As soon as we can,

we're going to hit
those cars

and we're going to Hopkinsville
and get help."

They hightail it down 41 here,
get to Hopkinsville,

which is about
seven miles from here.

Lucky Sutton told his story
to the sheriff,

and the local police
sprung into action

to investigate the scene.

In the middle
of the night,

they searched the buildings
they had,

they searched
the house up and down.

Could not find anything.

Although the Sutton family

assured the local police
their encounter was real,

they were not taken
seriously.

Nothing was done.
Nothing was roped off.

No samples taken or
anything.

Only thing they could do is
the chief told my grandmother,

"Miss Glynne, I'm so sorry,
but there's nothing here.

There's nothing
we can do for you."

That's horrifying to
be there

trying to protect
your children --

Yes.
These things are coming and
you don't know what they want,

and then you hear the sound
of talons and scratching.

My grandmother
was scared to death.

She sold the farm in
two weeks --
Wow.

...two weeks --
and moved to Hawkinsville

into an apartment complex

because she felt
she was safer there.

I mean,
it's a hard thing to move

and to pack everything up,

and to sell something
that quickly

really adds credibility
to the story

that they were terrified.

Yes.
They thought there was
something out here.

Did they feel like
it was out to get them?

Why did they think
that these visitors

came to their farmhouse?

They don't know.
That's just it.

They don't know
why they chose them.

But the story doesn't
end there.

Years after her family said they
encountered the aliens,

Geraldine was approached
by a stranger

who claimed to have
information

about a top secret
government investigation

that took place
the night of the attack.

He said, "I had a friend

that knows exactly what
happened to the green man."

He said he was in the military.
He was on his deathbed.

He says, "I've got to tell you
something before I die.

The Kelly green men
are real."

After this had happened,
after they had left Kelly,

they crash-landed
three miles away.

Really?

He said Wright Patterson
came in...

and took it all away.

Somebody found something,
picked it up,

put it in the back of the truck,
and the truck took off.

What was it?
The military was
officially here.

Yes.
But the reports say that they
didn't do any investigation.

You will not hear
that.

You will hear that from people
that lived around here

that know that fact.

Sounds like enough people
are coming forward

and saying,
"No, military was here.

Military was three miles away
to pick up
a crash."

If the military was
involved,

why do you think they would
continue to cover
up and say,

"Hey, we weren't here"?

For some reason,

they just did not want anything
to do with this.

I don't know why.

We'll never know what that
object was that was picked up.

If that did happen,
if a spacecraft did crash...

they're good at
covering things up.

They're afraid to tell people
that such things exist.

You have a lot of people
coming forward now

and telling you little bits
of information

to fill in the gaps here.

Is there anyone who's still
around here, still alive

that experienced this?

There actually is.

He was a teenager my dad took
under his wing,

believe it or not,
actually taught him to shoot

and all kinds of stuff
when he was a kid.

Some official agency

did do more than just look
around the property.

Somebody says they saw them
pick up some material

and take it back to

We know the military
was here.

So why would they deny
being involved

if there wasn't
anything to hide?

Bill was in the area
at the time

and witnessed the gun battle
from afar.

that you grew up in the area

at the time of this event

Did you know the Sutton family
before this event?

Yes, Lucky was my friend,

So tell me that night,
what were you doing?

It was later
in the evening.

I wanted to stop and see
my little sweetheart.

At 14, you're not in love --
just puppy love, whatever.

We were sitting out on
the porch,

talking about a little bit
of everything,

and we was hearing noise

coming from what was called
the Sutton Place.

They was hollering,
screaming.

She said,
"Oh, my God, what was that?"

And I said,
"It's a bullet."

We sat there on the outside.

A little bit,
police come by, state troopers,

looked like the sheriff,
I don't know.

Little while after that,
Fort Campbell started coming by.

So I didn't know what
happened.

Was concerned about Lucky
and the folks.

The next morning,
fairly late, Lucky came by.

The minute he saw Lucky,

Bill knew his friend
had seen something terrible.

THOMAS:
The man was so scared.

There was goose bumps
actually on his arms

and tears in his eyes.

We're talking about a man

that would slap the devil,
if it come right down to it.

about the government's
involvement

in the Sutton attack.

to the scene of the encounter

to see if they could find
any proof of the attack.

And he found that place back
there that was, I don't know,

200 or 300 yards
behind the house

and slightly to the left.

When I seen it,
it looked like somebody

had literally shaved
the grass off the clay --

and it was clay.

So, somebody
definitely was interested

and did take samples,

contrary to what the official
statement was, right?
Apparently so.

"Hey, we didn't have
an official investigation here."
Apparently so.

So we've established
the military was there.

In your personal opinion,

why do you think
the military

would deny
their involvement?

And what was the purpose
of them

not coming clean
about why they investigated?

This is blunt.

I have no proof that this
garbage had happened

in Roswell, New Mexico.

They told a story about that.

And then they siphoned it
all down

to where it was
a weather balloon.

Get real.

The military lied about it,
covered it up.

Call it whatever
you want to call it.

I think it's happened.

I think it happened here.

And I also think
it continues to happen.

And for what purpose?
I don't know.

And we have proof that somebody
went back there.

I imagine they didn't have
a random trespasser

come and dig a patch out of
their grass being unnoticed.

Something happened
that night.

Whether it be extraterrestrial,
whether it be paranormal,

something happened to my family
in that house
that night.

to the actual property,

if it's possible to
to access it

and to kind of walk through
how it happened, if that's okay.

The Sutton family claimed there
was a burnt patch of land

where the UFO allegedly landed,
but it's since been lost.

If I could find it,

I might be able to uncover
other lost evidence.

So if this craft
had mechanical problems

and if this is still
a very rural area,

it is possible

that there's something

into the Sutton case,

Bill's account says otherwise.

Luckily, CUFOS did
an investigation of their own.

They interviewed family members,
compiled testimony,

and even mapped out the event.

This map shows
in exacting detail

where the craft
might have landed.

If Ben can investigate
this location,

he might prove once and for all

that the Sutton account
was factual.

and then talking to
a collateral witness with Bill,

who supports everything
that was in that account,

get a layout of the land,

depression somewhere in here

just a little bit

bare earth

that looks a lot
like what Bill described.

It looked like somebody

had literally shaved
the grass off the clay.

[ Beeping ]

NARRATOR: The circular patch
of exposed soil

doesn't match anything
in its surroundings...

[ Detector whistling ]

...and Ben can find no sign
of what could have caused

such an odd circle
to form here naturally.

Ben believes he could have
found the location

of the UFO's
alleged landing.

Now he wants to scan the
old-growth trees in the area.

If this was the direction
the Suttons were shooting,

bullets might still be embedded
in the trees.

These trees should have
no metal in them

unless somebody
shot them.

Incredibly, Ben detects signs of
metal in the trees --

potentially bullets
covered by decades of growth.

Between the discovery
of the depression,

the cleared ground, and
the positive scans on the trees,

the Sutton story
could be plausible.

But it's getting dark.

I'm just going to go
a little further in.

as I could go

and had to stop

because there's something
big walking around in there.

I want to ask the ladies
if there's bear

in this part of Kentucky,
because it's not a deer.

May have nothing to do
with this case,

but I think we better
call it a night.

And I think
we came really close,

if not actually found,

the place where
the craft allegedly landed.

I got out of there towards
the last little bit kind of fast

because there was
something big in there.

Because I felt like it was
maybe something my size.

I didn't see a person.

I didn't see anything,
but it moved. I moved.

I got really close to where
we were trying to get to.

So I don't know if it has
anything to do
with this,

but we very well could
have found that gully spot

that they indicated was where
the craft had possibly landed.

To me, this was a big success
because any time

that we can find
historic documentation, right,

of the witnesses,
of what it looked like,

to compare it
so many years afterward,

and I think it's definitely
possible your family

had an encounter
of the third kind that night.

Well, I'm going to gather up
everything that we've done here,

see if I can come
to any more conclusions.

we have direct witness testimony
from the family itself

you compile it together

with the location, the map,

everything that we discovered
that seems to line up and mesh,

now I just need to go
and process this,

see if I can come

might seem random,

each sighting took place

near some sort
of government facility.

Trish's took place
near a NASA site.

This trail cam was on
the crapemyrtle tree

where I saw the alien,

and it was pointed west towards
Kennedy Space Center.

NARRATOR: The Suttons' took
place near a military base.

A little while after that,

Fort Campbell
started coming by.

compelling UFO sightings
