New Beika Modern Art Museum

Akabeko Bekobe!

Akabeko Bekobe! Akabeko Bekobe!

Akabeko Bekobe! Akabeko Bekobe!

Akabeko Bekobe! Akabeko Bekobe!

Thank you for coming to my exhibition today.

Please enjoy the world of akabeko art I've created to your heart's content.

Bekobe Motoko (36) Akabeko Artist

Akabeko Bekobe!

Kuraki Mai

Detective skills glitter left and right as they unravel tangled threads.

A mysterious case brought on by art!

Irrefutable evidence is found in an unexpected place!

Always determining the one truth

with the body of a child and the mind of an adult,

his name is Detective Conan!

The Akabeko and the Three Lucky Men

"The Akabeko and the Three Lucky Men!"

Bekobe Motoko Exhibit

Akabeko Bekobe

This is an exhibit by up-and-coming artist Bekobe Motoko-san,

who's attracted international attention.

They say her avant-garde works that combine the traditional akabeko and modern art

make her the second coming of the genius Janksy.

Huh...

Invitation

Bekobe Motoko Exhibition Akabeko Bekobe

Invitation

Akabeko Bekobe.

What does that even mean?

Hey, kid.

It's pretty rare to be invited to the opening reception of a show.

Show some gratitude.

Hey, Sonoko-neechan.

What?

This is supposed to be an akabeko exhibit, but there are hardly any red cows.

Now that you mention it, it is unusual.

Th-That's what you call art.

Akabeko are originally a folk craft from Fukushima, right?

With wobbling heads.

Yeah. They're a cow-shaped papier-mâché toy from the Aizu region of Fukushima.

During the Edo Period, the Enzo-ji Temple was destroyed in an earthquake,

and workers didn't have a way to transport reconstruction materials

to the top of the cliff.

That's when a red cow appeared out of nowhere to transport the materials.

Because of the akabeko, they were able to rebuild the temple.

They're also used to ward off misfortune.

Huh.

S-Someone help!

What's going on?!

Wait, Conan-kun!

Someone come quick! It's Bekobe-san!

What's wrong?

Fuku

Bekobe Motoko-san!

It's no use. She's dead.

No way.

Fuku

The victim is Bekobe Motoko-san,

real name Inaba Motoko-san, 34 years old.

Her profession was akabeko artist.

This show is an exhibition of her work,

which just opened today at the New Beika Modern Art Museum.

I see. And you just happened to be at the scene of the murder again?

I suppose so.

Cause of death is strangulation.

The marks on her neck indicate she was strangled using something,

but we haven't identified the weapon yet.

In her left hand is an akabeko,

and written next to her right hand are letters spelling out "fuku."

Fuku

A dying message, huh?

That must be it.

Sonoko?

The culprit must be someone with "fuku" in their name.

Well, actually...

The thing is...

We questioned people in the area,

and learned those three may have had issues with Bekobe-san.

First, there's the dancer Fukui Junya-san,

Fukui Junya (27) Dancer

her ex-boyfriend and the man who discovered the body.

It must be him. He's got "fuku" in his name.

To his left...

is Fukumoto Toshiharu-san, the head of Bekobe-san's office.

Fukumoto Toshiharu (39) Head of Office

He'd been her business partner long before she became famous.

What?

The last person is akabeko craftsman Fukura Hajime-san.

Fukura Hajime (42) Akabeko Craftsman

They once worked at the same akabeko workshop when Bekobe-san was a student.

Uh... What?

They all have "fuku" in their names.

Seriously? Now we don't know who the culprit is!

Fukui Junya-san, you and Bekobe-san used to date.

Well, yeah.

But that was a long time ago.

Now I work for her as a dancer.

Our relationship is strictly professional.

Were you dancing in the opening act earlier?

You saw that? Thank you.

Why are you working for her when you broke up?

Because it's a job, obviously.

Despite how it seems, I actually don't mix business with personal affairs.

Fukumoto Toshiharu-san, you're the head of Bekobe-san's office.

In other words, you're like Bekobe-san's right-hand man.

I suppose. I've always run everything for her besides her art,

like handling negotiations, acquiring materials, managing her schedule.

Simply put, I handle odd jobs.

Did anything unusual happen recently?

Since this exhibition is in a large space, I was quite busy with preparations,

but aside from that, I didn't notice anything unusual.

Fukumoto-san, are you from Hakata?

What?

You spoke in your dialect just now.

I try to speak standard Japanese as much as possible, but sometimes it slips out.

That's correct. I'm originally from Kurume in Fukuoka.

Fukura Hajime-san, you're a akabeko craftsman.

We'd like to ask you about your relationship with Bekobe-san.

We used to work at the art workshop.

If it was an akabeko workshop, does that mean you're from...

The Aizu region of Fukushima, of course.

Were you and Bekobe-san always close?

I couldn't say.

All of them sound like they have motive after just a short conversation.

Especially that last guy, Fukura.

His attitude was obviously terrible.

In that case, Fukui-san's attitude was questionable, too.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about working so closely with someone you broke up with.

I'm curious about that dying message, too.

Is "fuku" part of a person's name, the name of a prefecture, or something else entirely?

And what does the akabeko Bekobe-san had in her left hand mean?

Or maybe...

It doesn't mean anything at all.

I must hurry.

Before anyone else interferes.

Time to conduct my own investigation.

Hello?

What? Oh, no.

Yes. I'm sorry. If you could wait a little longer...

No, it's not like that.

Yes, I promise I'll pay it back.

Yes. Yes.

Debt, huh? I see.

They say necessity knows no law.

Fukumoto-san?

Where is he headed?

Conan-kun, where have you been?

You'll never believe what Sonoko found.

I found a clue.

A clue?

Look at this.

Akabeko Workshop Protecting Traditions Akabeko Workshop

The website for Bekobe-san's akabeko workshop?

"Protecting traditions."

A Message From Workshop Representative Fukura Hajime

"The warmth of traditional handmade crafts."

It's pretty conservative.

Right? It's the complete opposite of Bekobe-san.

Something must've happened between those two.

Huh? Come to think of it, where is Fukura-san?

Wasn't he around there until a moment ago?

Yeah, but I don't see him now.

Could it be?

Wait, Conan-kun! Where are you going?

Oh, come on!

Damn these things!

Hold it right there!

You shouldn't break those,

Fukura-san.

You looked rather distressed. I knew you were up to something.

What's going on?

Fukura-san.

Don't try to stop me!

These things shouldn't exist.

These things... Bekobe's work...

They defile tradition!

Stop what you're doing, Fukura-san.

I'll have to arrest you for property damage.

No! I have to do it!

I have to break them!

Fukura Hajime, you're under arrest for interference of public duties.

Damn it!

That akabeko was originally made by me.

Akabeko should be red.

Akabeko aren't akabeko unless they're red!

So you started by taking Bekobe-san's life.

What?

N-No, I didn't kill her.

I just wanted to destroy my akabeko...

That's what all culprits say.

You were jealous of Bekobe-san's success, weren't you?

Honestly, you're just a loser!

Come on, Sonoko. Do you have to call him a loser?

What are you talking about?

No matter how much you sugar-coat them, words only mean one thing.

Akabeko Workshop

Fukushima

Akabeko

Fukuoka

Words only mean one thing.

Fuku

So that's how it is.

Hey, Detective Chiba.

What is it, Conan-kun?

Have there been any developments in the investigation?

Developments? Let's see.

Only Bekobe-san's fingerprints were on the akabeko.

And the "fuku" was written using blood from her nose

when it bled after she was initially struck.

Also, she was strangled using some kind of cloth.

I see.

We still haven't found the weapon.

I'm sure you haven't.

What?

By the way, there's something I'd like you to look into.

Huh?

It's actually a request from Sonoko-neechan.

She wants you to search Bekobe-san's home right away.

Around here.

Found it. That's it.

There's no mistaking it. That settles it.

Don't be ridiculous! I didn't do it!

Then why are you wearing those handcuffs?

These are for something else.

Everyone, we've gathered you here so—

So that I, high school detective Suzuki Sonoko, can solve the case.

There are two keys to this case.

The first is the dying message.

The second is the weapon used to kill the victim.

An akabeko in her left hand, the letters "fuku" by her right.

If we directly interpret the akabeko Bekobe-san was holding,

it would seem to indicate akabeko craftsman Fukura-san.

See? So Fukura-san did it after all.

You're wrong.

What?

That akabeko was a key item for converting her dying message.

Bekobe-san ran out of strength after writing only "fuku,"

making it even more difficult to decipher her indirect message

that used a special meaning for the akabeko.

You mean you've already deciphered it?

Of course.

What does it mean?

Akabeko.

Akabeko?

Akabeko? Then it really was Fukura-san.

N-No!

That's not what I mean.

Akabeko has another meaning.

Sometimes the same word has a different meaning when you go to another place.

I've heard of that.

Like how in Tohoku, "nageru" (to throw) means "suteru" (to throw away),

and in Hokkaido "kowai" (scared) means "tsukareta" (tired), right?

Yes, that.

By the way, what does akabeko mean in the Fukuoka dialect,

Fukumoto Toshiharu-san the culprit?

If I recall correctly, I believe akabeko is a red loincloth.

A loincloth?

What does that have to do with me?

I had Detective Chiba look into it.

It seems you and Bekobe-san had been living together for a long time.

What?

I can imagine plenty of reasons you might've argued.

Enough jokes! I didn't do it!

Then why did Bekobe-san leave the dying message "red loincloth" in the Fukuoka dialect?

I don't know.

No, you do know.

I told you, I don't.

Oh, really? I see you're determined to play innocent.

Then I have my own ideas.

Everyone, please remove your pants this instant.

What?

What does this prove?

We're all wearing loincloths.

What's this?

Could it be?

Your loincloth is exceptionally long.

It looks long enough to use for other purposes.

That loincloth is the weapon?

Yes, that's right.

The "fuku" of her dying message meant Fukuoka, identifying the culprit,

and the akabeko statue identified the murder weapon.

That's ridiculous! That's just speculation!

I looked at your social media.

I found several photos of you attending festivals in nothing but a loincloth.

Ran again this year

You've known and loved loincloths for a long time, haven't you?

I like loincloths, but I didn't do it.

There's no proof.

Then shall we examine that loincloth?

Somewhere on it is a bloodstain from Bekobe-san's nose

that got on it during the murder.

I found it. It's small, but there's what looks like a bloodstain.

Give it up already. You can't talk your way out of this.

It's her fault.

I originally came up with the concept for akabeko art ten years ago.

But she was an attractive woman from Fukuoka.

Rather than doing it myself,

I knew it'd be a success if we promoted her, so I proposed the idea.

I was right, and we were successful.

Things began going according to plan, and we started making a lot of money.

We were supposed to get married and share everything together, but...

Then she betrayed me.

At some point, she signed a contract without my knowledge

and started a new business.

When I complained about it, she said...

You're complaining now?

Akabeko art belongs to me.

You should be grateful I don't kick you out of the house.

She betrayed me.

So I taught her a lesson.

Yeah, that's right. I killed Motoko.

Fukumoto Toshiharu, you're under arrest for murder.

Suspect arrested at 16:23.

How did you know?

The kid gave me the idea.

When he went to the bathroom, he happened to see you enter.

Because the cloth rustling sounds went on for so long in your stall,

he realized you were doing something with a loincloth.

From there, when I thought the murder weapon might be a loincloth,

I realized what that dying message meant.

Akabeko [akabeko] 1. A red cow-shaped papier-mâché toy from the Aizu region of Fukushima. 2. A red loincloth in the Fukuoka dialect.

Another case solved by high school detective Suzuki Sonoko.

Not that I remember it at all.

You were amazing, Sonoko.

Akabeko were originally children's toys, right?

Yeah.

By the way, those black spots are apparently smallpox spots.

Smallpox?

That's an old infectious disease, right?

Yeah. They say children who had akabeko didn't get smallpox.

Akabeko were toys made to protect children.

Huh.

If only the akabeko's protection had worked for Bekobe-san and Fukumoto-san.

Akabeko Bekobe.

Akabeko Bekobe.

Akabeko Bekobe.
